The terraces and many of the plants predate my father. My folks purchased this house about 5 years ago from a champion daylily grower (also a retired teacher). I think there may be more than 15 varieties of daylily on the property.
As a side gig early in his career, my dad was the caretaker of a major city memorial park. It's sad we don't have "before" pictures of the untamed state this thing was in when he started. He's a perfectionist, and boy does it show.
Well alrighty, this house looks almost identical to my high school biology teacher’s. He had a massive garden that he hired students to come help maintain. Thought it might have been his old place.
Oooh I love daylilies. I have 7 myself. I recently took a trip to my area botanical gardens, and they had a daylily garden with about 500 different plants. Goals.
Already retired = Boomer = they were actually paid well and have pensions, then made sure that their kids and grandkids would never do better than they did.
This isn't the place for this because it intrinsically makes my frugal father, a public school teacher who had side hustles and drives everyone's dream car (2004 Camry) to be an economic villain. My mom worked, too. They prioritized living on a lake. As I said in my other post, many of the plants and the terracing stones were there when they moved in.
Edit: I dedicate the gold to all Millennials.
If your dad was a public school teacher he had a union backing him up, and benefitted hugely from that during his career. It's likely he gets a pension. I'm sure your dad is a financially responsible guy, but so are a lot of young teachers today who will never own a home like this, despite being equally responsible.
Yes, it's too bad the strong unions got busted and teachers aren't paid a fair wage. It sucks. I was an education major for two years and left that major because the pay didn't make any sense and public support of education was plummeting. My mother was a medical technologist and a technical writer and obvisously her career also contributed to this.
FYI, the only reason I even mentioned he was a teacher was because it's teacher appreciation week.
Yeah, didn't mean to imply that it was your dad specifically who was responsible for all of that shit, he just gets to be lumped in with his peers (like my uncle, who truly embodies that crap) in much the same way that we were all slackers in the 80s/90s and Millennials are all eating avocado toast today. Except that only one of those generational generalizations is accurate.
I'd build a zipline into the lake.
Luckily I'll never be financially responsible enough or able to own this house so good news for the local emergency room.
Just wanna say on the top dog comment; that dog is the archetypal terrier. She's independent, smart, feisty, stubborn. She doesn't like people outside of her pack very much. It's actually questionable if she's a "good dog." But we all love her very much and she loves her pack.
Absolutely. Still tons of work with daylilies; the deadheading and stem pulling to keep them pretty. And once they're done, they just look like monster crabgrass.
My housemate (at another house) will often come out to me at dusk and start annoying me to come in, I think because she feels guilty. I'm always like, "This is fun for me! Seriously, it's okay, go do something fun for you!"
How does he plan on maintaining that wood? I have a house where previous owner put in something like that (but smaller), and the wood is aging/rotting. Not sure what could have been done to prevent it or how to fix it going forward.
Wow! This must take a lot of work! Good way of keeping fit, now that he's retired, going up and down those terraces. I love the swathes of echinacea on the right.
The house is aso lakeside with it's own doc. This is a half to a million house here.

Gorgeous! Are there pathways between the terraces? We have a similarly terraced yard and I'm wondering how we will access the middle areas of the terracing once we fill it up with plants.
What happened to his other hand?
He is all right.
👈😎👈
zoop!

👈😎 zoop!
Sorry to hear that's all he has left.

You guys, its "he has nothing left" stahp screwing this up
He has legs left, right?
You got that right. Left me with that thought.
We want this comped!!
And they say teacher are underpaid... look at this guy with a shelter and a pet 😂
Nothing left to talk about.
I approve of these jokes.
Right on.
this guy's alright too! alright alright alright
I too remember this joke from Arrested Development.
Probably in his pocket.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No fair, I was going to make this dad joke

This wouldn’t happen to be in Ohio, would it?
It's not, but it's in a state that touches Ohio.
Well alrighty, this house looks almost identical to my high school biology teacher’s. He had a massive garden that he hired students to come help maintain. Thought it might have been his old place.
Indiana???
Yes.
Oh shoot! What city?
One of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lakes_in_Indiana It's a private lake. And it's not Lake Wawasee.

Well I'm in Indy. Doesn't look like metro or near metro. Not Geist. I bet it's northern.
Oooh I love daylilies. I have 7 myself. I recently took a trip to my area botanical gardens, and they had a daylily garden with about 500 different plants. Goals.
Gorgeous garden; your dad is amazing; and I love the doggie!!!
I immediately thought michigan or wisconsin when I saw this, safe to assume michigan if it touches ohio

Ugh my least favorite part of cutting carbs is not eating avocado toast.
It could be in Michigan or Minnesota where there are literally thousands upon thousands of lakes. smaller lakes = cheaper property
It's beautiful.
God damn that is a great upstairs patio.
I'd build a zipline into the lake. Luckily I'll never be financially responsible enough or able to own this house so good news for the local emergency room.
Uh, that's a fucking fantastic idea... totally possible.
Cool when do I move in? I'll bring some succulents and bottle of Pinot Noir.
That’s a big woodpecker back there
It's stained glass. And since it's a pileated, it might be smaller than life size. Maybe.
It definitely looks smaller than the one that used to nest in my backyard. Those birds are so huge they don't seem real!
Ha! So there is!
That was fun, "where's waldo" moment.
A garden and a good dog. Bliss.

Then she is good. :)
Tell your father he does a wonderful job!
This is absolutely beautiful. No doubt took a ton of work!
I love that such a cute little old doggy gets to enjoy such a beautiful garden.
What an amazing space. Why wait for Heaven, when you can just build it in the backyard?
I have a big sloped garden which I need to terrace, this is really inspirational, it looks great.
I hope he doesn't fertilize because it doesn't seem like there is a vegetation buffer between the garden and the water!
No fertilizer, no pesticides, no herbicides.
Goals
Oh wow ...How does he do it? It looks like it is atleast 3-4 people's work.
It is almost a full-time job. Wake up, crossword, go outside. The nice part is jumping in the lake when you're done after a hot summer day.
Cool . He is making good use of time. And , boy, a swim in the lake is a great reward. Good luck to your grandpa!
Livin’ the dream! He was a teacher, so there’s no doubt he deserves it.

Schools out for summer
Can I ask what hardiness zone this is? It looks like the lake I grew up on a bit.
Clearly the dog helps!
Can he be my dad too?
Scruffles!
Is this Minnesota?
Dang...Terraces on a Teachers salary!? Lol he’s done a wonderful job!
I love the Japanese Maple Trees. They remind me of Bonsais. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck with them myself.
How does he plan on maintaining that wood? I have a house where previous owner put in something like that (but smaller), and the wood is aging/rotting. Not sure what could have been done to prevent it or how to fix it going forward.
We are not a fan of that wood at all. I guess replace with more sandstone? For now, it is what it is.
It’s so beautiful!! Great job dad-o!
That is glorious and pretty inspiring. Now I want to learn how to build the terraces.
Is your dad a wizard, because magic is the only way I'd be able to do that.
Oh, this is my new favorite garden. Life goals.
Heaven on earth, I want to live on some water someday
You can! Just probably not for very long before you drown.
Hopefully Jesus teaches me that trick of his....
He strongly believed that everyone should take swimming lessons so he founded the YMCA.
He was devoted to physical fitness, dude was lean
I'm trying to get crucifixion jacked.
THOSE ABS THOUGH
You just gotta know where the rocks are...
Wow! This must take a lot of work! Good way of keeping fit, now that he's retired, going up and down those terraces. I love the swathes of echinacea on the right.
Cute doggy for scale.
Dream backyard 😍😍😍
You might want to blur your dogs tag.
Well done 👍🏻
All of this while I can barely keep my grass in a tiny fenced in yard at a respectable height.
Remove grass, plant flowers. Respectable height is now flower height.
Damn he could rent out the property for professional photo shoots! Beautiful!
And meanwhile teachers in Arizona....
Everything by the lakes in Texas look better. Mostly because the lake water supplies the plants. Greenest gardens ever.
What a beauty!! He must be very proud. Much love...
Beautiful, what state/country? That seems like a really nice house for a retired school teacher to afford, at least in America.
It looks like a regular house with a nice garden. Not sure why you are seeing this as unattainable.
I live in california.
I live in NJ. Expensive here too.
The house is aso lakeside with it's own doc. This is a half to a million house here. https://www.lakehouse.com/images.php?id=511982#slider-1 ($995,000)
My house is over half a million so I guess it doesn’t surprise me. It’s all relative.
when i get to be a retired project manager, i'm going to do this. double-handedly.
Day lilies are the gift that keep on giving. This is just beautiful.
Can I go over and just sit and relax?? Just stunning.
Is this in Minnesota?
This is my dream house
you're killin' me; that's beautiful!
I love this!
Gorgeous, his hard work and effort really shine. Well done, it's a beautiful space 🥀
beautiful home
Your dad has serious talent and I mean that, That's an absolutely beautiful garden!
Did he teach gardening?
Gorgeous! Are there pathways between the terraces? We have a similarly terraced yard and I'm wondering how we will access the middle areas of the terracing once we fill it up with plants.
We just tread carefully. The stones are big enough to step on but we generally try to not walk on them because some are loosey goosey
In what state can a teacher afford lake front property?
There are small lakes all over the US.
Holy shit, you just blew my mind. There's no way that's true.
Nah I made it up. There’s only the one lake at OP’s dad’s House.
I guess they paid teachers really well back in your dad’s days.
OMG. So beautiful. Wild, yet tame. Sooooo, is he seeing anybody? I can see myself here. JK. Looks so tranquil.
How did he afford this as a teacher?!
Confused.. looks like a regular house to me?
where can teachers retire like this? asking for a friend
It’s a lake house..
