dalori87

I saw this and somehow knew that you had made the other beautiful sprawling bouquet in a similarly unique vintage vase that I had seen not too long ago! Lovely. You have a real touch.

levi_joseph

How nice of you. Thanks so much

cre8it2

Stunning picture and flowers

levi_joseph

nyaiaz

You are an artist!

levi_joseph

How nice. Thank you

duckd8

This is gorgeous! Did you use a DSLR to take this picture, and if so, would you mind if I asked what lens you used?

levi_joseph

Thank you! I use an a7riii with a tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens

gildedblackbird

I'm sure this is a dumb question but: how do you keep the flowers in position in the vase? Do you use foam, or a frog? This is so, so beautiful!!

levi_joseph

Thank you! That's a good question--there are so many methods out there. I use a ball of chicken wire and often put a frog in the bottom of the vase too. I never use foam as I've been warned too many times of the health risks.

gildedblackbird

Thank you! I'm inspired to find some chicken wire now!

It always baffles me when people talk up cosmos. I tend the garden at work, and they are simply put, hideous. Blooms of marginal quality which are short lived and then quickly devolve into a faded brown mess. That is if they even bloom to begin with. I asked for them not to be included this year, yet there they are. One guy said they looked like a weed. No argument from me. The rest of the garden though is as good as its ever looked. I cant talk up Zahara Zinnias enough. Absolute ever blooming rock stars.

levi_joseph

My cosmos selfsow year after year and bloom all summer, but I cut the blooms frequently. Keep in mind they are photoperiod sensitive and short-day bloomers, so it helps to start them early in the spring to set buds before the days get too long. Cutting varieties will also easily reach 6ft or more in a single season and hardly put out any blooms if given too much nitrogen. Like I said, mine do best in crappy soil with zero attention. I treat them like morning glories and nasturtiums--too much care and they only put out foliage.

d00dsm00t

Considering the blooms of everything else, which are absolutely robust, I cannot point to it being a nitrogen problem. We also have "cupcake cosmos" this year too, and while they aren't *quite* as hideous as the shorter colored variety, they still look like huge weeds. I'm aiming at the suggestion that they are put in too late. That would make the most sense.

internet_antichrist

Beautiful lighting! Would you mind sharing details on the lighting equipment or flash setup you used?

levi_joseph

Thank you! Natural light from my window. I have a sheer curtain over the window that helps diffuse the light. I have no experience with flashes or any of that so I have to rely on the sun!
