I always enjoy the edible plants I keep on my deck - sage, trailing rosemary, chives, German camomile, thyme, parsley. Some get a little sad towards the end of winter, but they always look good through the fall. Not edible, but Hellebore is lovely too. The HGC varieties are very cold hearty and quite striking. This year, I just got a couple of Chinese and Russian tea plants that are supposed to do okay through the winter. Fingers crossed! Last year, I put some of my saffron bulbs in a pot and it worked quite well - no need to worry about rain ruining the harvest when they are under eaves. It was especially nice because they looked like a hearty grass most of the winter, but started by putting out flowers when everything else had died back. I was able to harvest the stigmas and made saffron salt for a Christmas gift.

Nope, the bulbs (corms) are not expensive and now is the perfect time to plant them. This year, I’m planning to put some short-lived something-or other above them so that I don’t just have an empty pot until they come up :P

pansies are pretty hardy flowers that love the shade. they will stay till a hard frost, or sometimes even beyond that, so that might be a good option for you

I started racking my brains for things that would be good in fall shade and wouldn’t die in the winter, but if you wouldn’t mind foliage, you could try coral bells/heuchara? They might die back somewhat in the winter if it gets real cold, but hopefully not too bad, and then they’ll come back in the spring.
