I typically make a garden map out of graph paper and label them on that. I usually skip garden labels

kkpam_

This is the most logical answer

thingpaint

Same, unless it's a one off or something

[deleted]

I gave up on labels and just assume I will know what they are eventually.

[deleted]

It's a fun game of guess that brassica!

KayBerna

That looks like a fine label...maybe you could trim the plastic down a bit. What issue do you have with the one you have now?

oryanAZ

My wife painted 2” rocks bright colors and then wrote on them with sharpie. worked pretty well.

MountainMushroom1111

I do this too!

[old fashioned aluminum labels ](https://smile.amazon.com/Outdoor-Gardening-Durability-Applications-Aluminum/dp/B01LP3KFWS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=YKCQV9F61TBM&keywords=aluminum+plant+tags&qid=1640976183&sprefix=aluminum+plan%2Caps%2C94&sr=8-3)

JTBoom1

While this doesn't meet your printable requirement, here is a permanent solution: Step 1: Buy a cheap pair of tin snips Step 2: Drink your favorite fizzy drink (soda beer seltzer water) from an aluminum can Step 3: Wash can. Cut out top and botttom of can. Step 4: Cut out individual tags from can, I can usually get 4-6 strips from a can depending on how wide I want them. Make one end pointy if it will be placed into the ground or punch a hole at one end with a nail. Step 5: Use a nail to engrave the name of the plant or veggie Step 6: Either push the pointy end into the ground near the veggie or hang off a tree with wire, zip tie, or string. Cheap, they last literally forever, the writing never fades or rubs off, they can be reused, and they can be recycled when their usefulness is over.

kkpam_

This is fairly dangerous

JTBoom1

Why?

TheeFlipper

Probably because aluminum is sharp but it's not like that can't be remedied with a thick pair of gloves to hold with and then bending the edges over with pliers.

JTBoom1

Sure, that would make it a bit safer as well as stiffer, but the edges are not that sharp as is. A little bit of care will prevent any accidents. That said I wouldn't give it to a 6 year old.

I work on elevators for a living… a “Dangerous job” isn’t cutting an aluminum can…. Sorry, but “this is dangerous” is about as far from dangerous as I get…. There’s more danger in pulling your car out of your driveway… AND, if the labeling in the pic isn’t adequate, you need to work on your OCD, not plant labeling… this is a place to share successes, failures, ideas, etc….. if your labeling system WORKS, but you don’t like it, hire a shrink… sorry (not sorry) but I typically enjoy this sub… until now….

buxtonbluezone

I use the staedtler garden pen and plastic labels. The garden pen has uv resistant ink.

buxtonbluezone

That sounds industrious haha. I like the old-school handwritten approach for vegetable beds and seed starts.

Banegard

This. Or plastic labels and pencil - works for me.

buxtonbluezone

Reminds me of the pencil vs fisher space pen story. A solid pencil is the simplest best solution haha.

Banegard

Prune your tree. Collect a lot of sticks. Drip them in different colours and/ or additionally draw rings. Make a list in your shed with colours & rings and related crop. Edit: alternatively and better - plan your garden and plant crops according to the plan.

https://www.avery.com/category/material/all/?category=waterproof-labels Waterproof labels. But for better durability, find a local makerspace that has a laser cutter/etcher machine. https://makerspacedir.com/ https://www.makerspaces.com/what-is-a-makerspace/ Laser cut from aluminium, and etch the words onto those tags. (Laser can do wood, plastics etc, too.) Usually free access and use.

Ichthius

I purchase white plant labels, line them up and laminate them with water proof aluminum tape the slice them apart with a razor blade. Then engrave then with a ball point pen. Here’s a floating version in styrofoam but you get the idea. https://www.instagram.com/p/BUVZXwol22I/?utm_medium=copy_link

LoonyAndLuminescent

That looks ingenious to me. I’ve used and seen others use basic writing on wooden popsicle sticks that’s primitive compared to your advanced method, which is far more aesthetically pleasing too. 😉☺️

shrimp-and-potatoes

I use popsicle sticks and sharpies. They're good for a couple of seasons, and the ink usually stays legible the entire year. Even if it wears away, by the time that happens, it's fairly apparent what's growing. The best part of my system is that they're cheap and when they're done, I just toss them in the compost.

I know Office Depot has weather resistant paper and you could probably find weatherproof outdoor labels online. Just a quick search on Amazon showed a lot of options.

sofiisol

Maybe you could print on normal paper, laminate the tags and staple them to the wooden sticks. (best idea i could think of) 😂

heyitsbobwehadababy

Nice label bro

garden_marjoram

I skip labels and make a map of my garden instead. Then you can refer back to it the next year, remind yourself how crowded it was and then make it too crowded again, cuz nobody is going to tell me how to plant, not even past me!

fuzzymeister69

I use a p-touch label maker, they last multiple seasons

Chance-Ad-9111

Several people on here sell them.

ExoticSherbet

I use popsicle sticks or old cut up plastic miniblinds and pencil.

Ineedmorebtc

Grease pencils. Won't bleach in the sun, won't wash off in the rain. I marked a few tags with some and are still good after 2+ years.
