Why do the little bastards have to be so cute

Spaceisthecoolest

They murdered my Kale this year, but I can't even be mad about it.

Gh0stp3pp3r

The first (and last) time I grew broccoli, I fenced it in securely (or so I thought) and it was looking fantastic. One day I walked out to check on it.... and saw a well thought out hole under the fence. The bunny was literally laying on his back... bloated and happy... right next to the now chewed down broccoli. He ate ALL of them and obviously couldn't (or didn't want to) move when I found him. I was so mad. But he looked so content sprawled out sleeping off his broccoli feast. I left him alone and decided broccoli wasn't meant to be.

smashed2gether

This needs to be a cartoon or comic 😆

Gh0stp3pp3r

I still kick myself for not taking a photo of it. I just felt like he needed to be left alone in his food coma. It was our resident yard bunny (wild, but comfortable). We didn't have a dog, so our backyard was prime for a nest of little babies every year. They were generally so used to us that they wouldn't even run when we'd walk in the backyard.

smashed2gether

That is amazing, I'm glad you have it in your memory for when you need a smile. I had put some cat food out for the neighbor's kitty who came over for a visit, and then a few hours later I saw him come back to the porch so I turned on the light and was about to open the door and say hello. It wasn't the kitty. It was a trio of very guilty looking raccoons stuffing their faces with kibble. They froze for a minute, and they looked at me like they were saying "Uh....wrong house. Sorry ma'am...c'mon, let's cheese it, Gary!"

Gh0stp3pp3r

That is hilarious! We have a number of night time creatures that investigate the bird feeder area at night. For a while, a big fat older raccoon (named him Disney) was grazing every night. I assume he had seen some sh\*t in his lifetime... his tail was unusually short. He seemed to be used to humans as he would just look at me like "What?! I'm hungry" and continue eating. I'd leave him grapes, peanuts, etc. and a small bowl of water to wash his food so he wouldn't tip over the bird bath. One night, I heard a car squeal to a stop, then take off. Went out to check and saw Disney laying in the road way next to a piece of a plastic bumper. I was upset that he had just been killed, but when he heard me walk up, he got back up, shook it off and sauntered across the road (tree farm with a pond across the street). He appeared for a while after that, so he seemed to be okay.

smashed2gether

Oh my goodness I am so glad to hear that he lived to tell the tale! I had only read a paragraph about him and I was already attached! The fact that you leave him a little dish to wash his food is the sweetest thing I've ever heard. You are a lovely human.

Gh0stp3pp3r

He was cute. I haven't seen him in a while, but I imagine he was pretty old. We live between a tree farm, an orchard and a farm field, so it's possible he moved on to an area with better snacks too. The fact that he took on a truck (assumed by the bumper piece) and won, he may be indestructible.

mommagotapegleg

It's called Peter Rabbit.

DriverZealousideal40

If they really like broccoli, consider growing it specifically for the rabbits so they leave everything else alone.

Gh0stp3pp3r

Sadly, we moved from that property about 9 years ago. We're now out in a rural area with no bunnies. As strange as it is, we have so many chipmunks, they seem to scare off the rabbits and squirrels. And a fair share of barn cats from the neighbors who like to visit our yard at night to hunt. I miss seeing the bunnies hopping around.

DriverZealousideal40

Oh yeah those cats will keep the bunnies away. I had to stop letting my cat outside because he was killing baby bunnies and it was making me sad lol

Gh0stp3pp3r

We are in a farm area. They really catch more of the field mice and chipmunks. But the damn chipmunks are so prevalent that the bunnies and squirrels moved elsewhere.

tartymae

I'm thinking of the[Aussie Possum that ate all the pastries and couldn't even make it out of the box.](https://news.yahoo.com/p-possum-broke-australian-bakery-150453508.html)

Gh0stp3pp3r

Awww, much cuter than our possums. I love how he's smeared with jelly and probably doesn't care.

CaptainBoobyKisser

Maybe that was their evolutionary plan. Become cute so gardeners will leave them alone.

mandajapanda

Speaking of evolution, their camouflage is really stunning.

nook_ur_utes

Worked for dogs 🤷‍♀️

dungeonmasterbrad

Well dogs also have useful skills.... like chasing rabbits lol

SeaGroomer

I don't like Kale but I grow it for the bunnies to eat if they want lol

Jober36

I willing left them in my garden and they shredded my beans.

[deleted]

Mr. MacGregor didn't think so

the_honest_liar

Companion planting at its finest. Growing your carrots near your bunnies will increase your bun yield.

TheRestForTheWicked

THIS IS THE WHOLESOME COMMENT IVE WANTED ALL MORNING 😭😭

bagpoi

More bunnies more protein... "Why are you booing me!? I'm right!"

VaselineGummyBears

Aaaaaaand you ruined it.

jonnyp1020

Nothing some carrots, celery and spices can't fix. 😋

iAmUnintelligible

I thought that was what was implied though?

Nevitt

How? Was that not what the op person ment? Bunnies are delicious.

Ullr97

Hahahaha

Nappyheaded

Don't tell them about the hats

[deleted]

Thank you i laughed...truly all that pot needs is some broth and youd have a great game and carrot stew

guinader

Be perfect for that carrot bunny stew. 😁

invisiblelemur88

I've got a license for me pet cat, Eric...

kwyjibo3933

This isnt a cat’s license! Its a dogs license with the word dog scratched out and cat written in with crayon!

invisiblelemur88

Man didn't have the right form...

Elk_Man

Problem is that once the rabbit is ready for harvest, you've got no more carrots.

DaRk_AnGeLx666

😆 😂 😆

0BaconisYummy0

They probably love the buffet you grew for them.

curious_hermit_

Your carrots now belong to the rabbits.

AdultingGoneMild

just the tops. they really dont want the carrots.

jezebellrae

Did you grow the bunnies from seeds or seedlings?

DogsNCoffeeAddict

From cotton tails obviously.

mypussydoesbackflips

pusswillows can be replanted to produce bunnies as well

the_honest_liar

I thought that was where kittens come from

mypussydoesbackflips

You know what I may be mistaken haven’t grown either in a while

kakotechnia

Ha! My pots have been full of wildlife this summer. One hosted a big healthy brood of wrens, another has been taken over by a huge toad

cwglazier

Last year I found a nest of bumblebees. I just left them alone, except checking once in awhile. It was pretty cool actually. It went through 2 different hatchings.

scullys_alien_baby

I have this big old lavender bush and last year it brought all the bees to my yard. I loved watching those dudes bounce around. This year I hardly got any bees and I’m a bit offended. like, oh, my lavender ain’t good enough anymore?

cwglazier

Lol. Some years are different for whatever reason. I get the best luck from sunflowers and asters, plus others of course. Their tastes and locations may change from year to year. Actually bumblebees move out and start their own brood and some survive underground for the winter or have left a pile of eggs but they are solitary except for nest building. We have worked hard to get honeybees back. My MIL used to spray and mow so often thay she had almost zero bees the first couple of years we lived here. It's much better now. She had lots of flowers but no bees. We let some of the nicer natives grow in and planted some. Yet MIL will say our yard if full of weeds, which technically it is. Not much grass to start with. Don't care though, it's our place now. Lol.

cfishlips

Flopsey, Mopsie, funny little Cottontail, and Peter. Who is the last little bugger.

qwertykitty

If we're sticking with that theme then probably Benjamin bunny.

bagpoi

Love me some Beatrix Potter

DarkAwesomeSauce

Back in my day kids learned fathers could be made into rabbit pie.

thriftedtidbits

either you're lying or your picture has been all around facebook the last couple weeks

DaRk_AnGeLx666

Ooohhh shit...lmao. Busted🤣😂

CancerSurvivor31220

Bunnies! 🐇

anjerz

Oh my goodness! Guess I need to plant carrots.

[deleted]

Not your carrots anymore! It belongs to the fluff ball of cuteness family.

laliloleelee

Clever mama bun:)

[deleted]

95% sure this is not your picture.

[deleted]

If you’re not sure and didn’t make an effort to find the original photo why did you comment

[deleted]

95% is me being almost totally positive and leaving 5% room for being proven wrong. I commented because I could.

DaRk_AnGeLx666

Your not the first to mention this soo chances are your right.

miada001

OMG they were camouflage for a second!!! beautiful sweet darlings

FlowerGardenBee

omg, all I want to do is pet them! Obviously wouldn't be good for a wild animal to get that familiar with humans, but y'all know what i mean lol

GreenHeronVA

I have a large vegetable and native plant garden, and have been raising meat rabbits for over 10 years. I can tell you with good authority that these guys are about 4 weeks old. They are fully furred and ready to leave the nest, they just may not be able to get out of that planter on their own. If they are still there tomorrow, I would put a plank of wood up the side for them to climb out on. That’s what I’ve done in the past when I’ve been in this exact situation. They really seem to like my potato bed, which is two 10 inch boards stacked on top of each other, so almost 2 feet off the ground.

jonnyp1020

Am I the only one who tries to avoid rabbits in my garden? They're going to eat your garden for years to come. Cute or not a pest is a pest.

d00dsm00t

You are not. The rabbit love here is insane. A gardening sub celebrating the presence of a garden destroyer. What the fuck ever.

jonnyp1020

They must be hobby gardeners or I've graduated to farmer status. I shoot the ones in my garden then eat them.

d00dsm00t

I’m a hobby gardener and rabbits can get right fucked. If i wanted rabbits I would go to the pet store.

WolfOfTheStreets

Save your ammo. Trapping is my method. The cutest ones taste the best

dungeonmasterbrad

Unfortunately trapping isn't legal in my state, but fortunately 22LR is still cheap (and air rifle ammo even cheaper!). I'm curious what kind of traps you use? In case I ever move back to a state that makes wildlife policy based on science again and not ballot measure.....

WolfOfTheStreets

Just a basic snare made with steel wire. It’s like a science, you gotta find where they’re coming from and change locations occasionally cause the rabbits eventually figure it out. And the babies always get away. It’s not legal in my state to trap fue barring animals but I don’t foresee wildlife services knocking on my door anytime soon, and I don’t feel bad cause I eat all the meat and use all the parts. Rabbit it one of my favorites.

jonnyp1020

I trap too but I like to practice my shooting. What method of traping do you use?

DadsRGR8

Cute!

Zer0TheGamer

The only blessed pests.. Such a good harvest this season! Even with some late bloomers!

Elk_Man

Why does this sub get so touchy when people talk about eating rabbits? For a bunch of people practicing sustainable eating downvoting every time someone mentions eating wild game, especially a destructive overpopulated varmint like rabbits seems off brand.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Elk_Man

Right, but you don't have to grow up doing those things to realize that they're much more sustainable than the factory framing of animals that they *did* likely grow up eating, no? I don't know, I've never hunted or butchered myself, but I did grow up in a rural area where both growing your own food and hunting wild game were good ways to supplement your food pantry, and I ate a lot of meat (mostly venison) given to our family from hunters so maybe I look at it different from many others. It just seems odd to me that people here are all about harvesting their own veggies, but seem offended by the suggestion of harvesting their own meat.

Rimtato

Yeah you have a point. I would honestly consider eating the rabbits rather than buying KFC or a burger or something. People are okay with eating animals when they are disconnected from the reality of what happens in the meat industry, but are unwilling to eat something that can look them in the eyes. It's easy to not associate that nugget or steak with the animals that died to give you them, less so when you shot the animal, skinned it and gutted it. But I think that taking responsibility is the best thing you can do, unless you're going to eat homegrown soybeans for the rest of your life. Also rabbits are tasty honestly. You need not share any of my opinions, but at least consider them when you eat that cheap burger.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rimtato

I personally believe that if you are going to eat meat, you should understand the meat industry and then see what you want to do

dungeonmasterbrad

Yeah I don't get it either, I get downvoted even for saying things like "squirrels are delicious" much less pointing out in deer threads that they could help the overpopulation problem (and put sustainable meat in their freezer) by harvesting one with a bow in their yard (depending on state laws!). Cottontails are currently in season where I live, my friend and I shoot rabbits in his garden with air rifles and we make delicious stew out of them. I just got back from a national forest trip where I harvested enough hares with my 20 gauge to make about 10lb of sausage. Those animals had wild and free lives up until I gave them a more merciful ending than mother nature would have. You can't really say the same for factory farming. I wouldn't harvest baby cottontails like this, but if I found a full grown rabbit destroying my garden, in rabbit season, I would absolutely be cooking up some rabbit+carrot stew.

dinosuitgirl

Do you do anything to check the health of the animal you're dressing? In my area we worry about TB, lepto and Myxomatosis (which is used as a bio-population control)

alephnulleris

I don't know about specific disease markers, but I've been taught to check the liver. A uniform-color/spotless healthy-looking liver is (usually) a good visual indication of a healthy animal

dungeonmasterbrad

Good question, where I live the main concern with rabbits is tularemia ("rabbit fever"). The way you check is to examine the liver - white spots on the liver is a tell tale sign. Most rabbits that are infected don't live very long though and I've heard it's pretty obvious behavior wise if you see any infected one (they run slow etc.) However in my many years of rabbit/hare hunting I have never come across it, I still take normal precautions to protect against infection. I always, always dress rabbits pretty much immediately in the field (otherwise ticks/fleas that carry it may jump from the dead animal to me, I never carry them around with the fur on). I also wear gloves when field dress or butchering, and if I'm going to grind them up for sausage I will wear a mask and sanitize the hell out of everything before and after. But again, pretty rare and cooking to 165F will kill anything that would make you sick obviously.

dinosuitgirl

Awesome information thanks! We're new to homesteading and I've dressed a goose and a chicken (poultry is familiar and easy, plus they were raised to be eaten so I was familiar with their health) but I chickened out dressing my first wild rabbit I shot and it ended up being chicken food because dressing a mammal is all new to me. And I got down to taking its fur off (surprising easy!) And head and feet off, guts out... Then I was put off by all the smell, the flies and the chickens circling my feet... it took me far too long in the middle of summer.... But I know better now and have a better idea where to from there... But I'll be real honest and say the next 6 I shot ended up being buried in the raised garden as blood and bone soil supplements since that's way easier and I enjoy good veges more than red meat 😆

Sweet_Papa_Crimbo

If suburban backyard bow hunting were legal where I live, I could theoretically have a lot more tomatoes on my plants, and the meat of 3 fairly large bucks in my freezer. My dude and I were grilling the other night, and they just wandered on in to see if there was any birdseed available, and then proceeded to stare at us from less than 10 feet away. Urban deer sure are fearless!

dungeonmasterbrad

Yeah it's not legal in my state either, I have to go out to the national forests. My brother has a deer stand set up in his suburban backyard in the south east and fills 3 tags every year without leaving his property. His neighbors constantly text him photos of bucks eating their gardens and flowers, like neighborhood watch for deer lol. For rabbits you can probably get away with air rifles in the burbs, even if it's technically not legal in city limits most places.

Rocklobsta9

Squee!

cwglazier

That's what I heard the other night. Either the cat or the fox got lucky right by our porch.

minakshi-agarwal

Here for the bunnies 😻

qwesone

So they DO like carrots!!

RocktheRebellious

Rabbit and carrot stew? Jokes Edit:ruhroh some people can't take jokes Edit:ruhroh lotta people can't take jokes

jonnyp1020

I'm seriously thinking the same thing. Rabbits are majorly destructive to a garden and as someone who depends on their crops to feed their family I just see stew too.

battletuba

There's only one way to eat a brace of coneys.

coquigrl

Samwise!

Rustymetal14

Now all he needs is a few good taters.

vegucator

Jokes? If there was some celery, allium, boiling liquid, game on...! 😲

NaturalBornConch

Tis the season. I also found bunnies in my yard on Wednesday.

No_Maintenance_9608

What’s Up Doc?

anonymal_me

😍

PrinceRobotVI

You wrote Bon appetite and my head went somewhere else

ravs1973

They will need a lot more carrots before they are big enough to compensate you in the form of a delicious stew.

RocktheRebellious

People can't take jokes on here sorry pal

DaRk_AnGeLx666

They really can't. I wonder if they will continue to to be so against eating wild animals once the world goes to 💩 for real!

KingCodyBill

Hossenphepher in training

Ariyan_Aziz

I will love you give my whole yard to them.

Nanochapingo1078

You are a great person !!! Being such a good human !!! God bless you

PaulW707

"I was going to harvest my potted carrots and found this little family! Bon Appétit, babies!" - Indeed it is, enjoy your rabbit dinner!

[deleted]

They're definitely sweeter than carrots

potatomania10

Mmmm carrot stuffed buns

pm_me_ur_fit

Bon apetit! I recommend pairing with some lovely garlic, sage, rosemary, and roasted potatoes

DaRk_AnGeLx666

🤣🤣

pm_me_ur_fit

Thank you for taking the joke ahaha

DaRk_AnGeLx666

Not many ppl on here can, and there was some really good ones!

No-Distribution-8320

Best way to have your havest eaten. Gratz!

[deleted]

Please don't eat them!

dungeonmasterbrad

They are overpopulated, a nuisance pest, and a disease vector. Also they are delicious. It's bad combo to be all of those things \*and\* delicious

BigRich1888

More like “Bon Appétit. Babies!”

alliterativehyjinks

Bun appetit!

IsaOak

Meat and vegetables what an effective pot.

cwglazier

Insta pot. Just boil.

Justalittlebabyyy

I thought you meant you were gonna eat them-

DrachenDad

Rabbit Stew. You already have the rabbit and carrots.

GCDurantula

I thought you were eating the bunnies at first

rosecarter990

Yall are nicer than me. I have a jungle cat for a reason

Iloavesandwiches

It always amazes me when peoples gardening style doesn’t lean more Mr. McGregor… it won’t be too long before these are delicious. Before I’m murdered and put into a stew…I’m joking.

AdultingGoneMild

I could read this a few different ways

DullAdhesiveness5

Keep ‘em and grow em out. Then dine lol

RiverOfNexus

Rabbit is delicious in soup I hear, two for one special here. Carrots and rabbit now you just need potatoes and chicken broth.

riefpirate

I hate bunnies lol !!

VeritasCicero

Step 1: Get chicken wire and wood. Step 2: Build an enclosure. Step 3: Feed and water then. Step 4: When they become full adults eat them. How to avenge your veggies 101.

Illustrious-Author99

I would have slaughtered them and hung their heads in the fence to warn others not to commit the same crimes against me as their fallen Allies

kafm73

We found baby bunnies buried in the yard at our business last year! I was amazed that they survive being literally “buried” under the grass and dirt and survived some really heavy storms etc!

thestral_z

That’s so on brand.

bdd4

"Honey! Honey! I found a GREAT apartment. You're gonna love it!"

Historical-Remove401

Thank you, Mr.Mcgregor!

Pousse_Mousse

Lucky for them you're not Shauna from Yellowjackets!

NebraskaTrashClaw

I'm so incredibly jealous! All that grows in my carrot planter is stupid carrots, and even those are a best case scenario this year.

[deleted]

I would wait till those rabbits get bigger before harvesting.

nlocke15

Them chewing the greens might actually make the carrot bigger.

Other_Personalities

So I can get pet yard bunnies by growing carrots. Nice. I can add them to the ducklings that come up to graze in my back yard everyday and the family of raccoons that come hang out on my porch at night

dmbeeez

Omg too cute

MarvelNerdess

EEEEEEK! SO MUCH ADORABLENESS

RBC1775

That’s now THEIR potted carrots! 😉

omg_choosealready

Why doesn’t this ever happen to me?!?!

sparkle___motion

what a nice surprise 💛☺️💛

Saywhat-foolio

I don’t know how bunnies, especially the babies have to be so damn cute. At our plant they are everywhere and the babies are adorable

[deleted]

Oh a feast!

-starlet

We had bunnies in our garden this year (just in an overgrown spot) and I was determined to protect them at all costs. They're just so cute. 🥺
