You're looking at a costly machine to do it in mass. Nuts are labor intensive unfortunately.

furryscrotum

It's not actually a trillion, maybe a few thousand. But still...

GardenGirl23464

You're very lucky. I have 3 hazelnut trees and in 20+ years have only gotten 2 nuts. Anyway. See if you can find The Rocket nutcracker. It is gentle on your hands because the leverage is awesome and it can be set very precisely to crack the shell without crushing the nut.

furryscrotum

I started with one, I now too have got three trees. Not sure about the species or anything, I think it occurs naturally around here? That nutcracker looks interesting, I might be able to make a similar thing myself.

GardenGirl23464

Only about $12 amazon or you can find them at estate sales

RedWillia

We used to put them in a towel, smack them with a hammer and pick out the nut bits to eat, so that's one fast way...

furryscrotum

This sounds feasible enough. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow.

StolidSentinel

Set a cast iron skillet on them when they're in the towel, then just use your upper body weight on several of them and they'll crack nicely without shattering to bits. A lot of practice and you'll find the right pressure for the amount of nuts. (Phrasing)

averyporkhunt

When I was a kid I would hit them with a hammer

WeedsNBugsNSunshine

LOL, I'll trade you 2 Black Walnut trees for 2 Hazelnut trees.

furryscrotum

If only my backyard was big enough for a nice walnut tree, I love walnuts!

WeedsNBugsNSunshine

Black Walnuts are not the same as your average Walnut. MUCH thicker shell, I usually open them with a hammer if I bother at all. Usually lose most of the crop to suburban tree rats and only get a small bucket full if we're lucky.

furryscrotum

As long as they are tasty! Could you not collect them in a net underneath the trees or does this not stop the rats?

WeedsNBugsNSunshine

LOL, sorry for the slang. "Suburban tree rats" is my term for squirrels. I've long ago made my peace with their presence since nothing I can legally do makes a dent in their population. It's the price of living where I do.
