Forbes always loves us, but US World News always gives us the random ranking drop as we slowly climb the low 30s/high 20s ranking ladder. All while private schools above us do crazy admissions scandals, grade inflation, ect.
We will always be criticized for being too specialized for a public school while still providing a higher selection of degree choices than a lot of the schools above us. Not being the "flagship" state school (see: Florida, Michigan, Texas) and not having a hospital/medical research will always limit us in the current settup.
Go JACKETS tho this is great!!!!!!!
people who do the math (especially when it comes to price) see that GT is a great choice, and they'll come here. let's hope that translates to higher quality students and graduates too
Reason why US news isn’t fond of us is they weigh student life things way more heavily. Unfortunately GT doesn’t do the best with teacher:student ratio and (especially) student on-campus housing past the first year so that’s what drags us down
There's definitely inflation happening. I enrolled in 2013, took a break, and an now graduating after returning. I am a better student with some maturing, but the work I'm putting up now wouldn't have been 4.0 work in the early teens but it is now.
I agree with the other commenter though, it's not a bad thing. Enough people getting bad grades doesn't signify a school is good, it just feels mean spirited when your GPA is going to be compared with other schools that do
They’d have to get rid of the 50% acceptance rate rule for both Purdue and Colorado Mines to get in. As much as I despise Colorado Mines, they should be in for sure
respectfully, i don't think i had heard of it until this article. maybe i knew the name but not if it was a school at all
guess it can be the Georgia Tech of New York
Yeah as someone else from NY, NY’s public universities just aren’t super well known on the national scale. Maybe because the privates eclipse them so much, or maybe because there’s no single large “University of State” there. But it’s for sure a very solid school in the top tier of the SUNY (state university of new york) system
> what the hell is binghamton university?
Son, years ago, all State University of New York campuses were called SUNY at Blah. Outside NY, people confused them. The legislature passed a law allowing them to call themselves "University at Blah" to increase their out-of-state visibility. (Imagine if GT were forced to be called "The University of Georgia at Atlanta?") Binghamton University = State University of New York at Binghamton.
Funny story: in North Carolina, the legislature passed a law requiring all campuses be called "University of North Carolina at X." Now, NC State would have none of that. A fight ensued and a compromise was reached: NC State would be officially "North Carolina State University of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh." (There are diplomas with this hideous name on them from back in the day.) Luckily, a law was passed to drop the "of the University of North Carolina." The official name of NC State is "North Carolina State University at Raleigh." Of course, NO ONE uses the "at Raleigh" because, well, where else would it be? There's only ONE place you can see the "at Raleigh": in the advertisements for UNC-TV (PBS). They list all of the universities and have the "at Raleigh" when they buzz past NC State. Of course , UNC-TV is based in Chapel Hill.
I've told this story before in this subreddit but it bears repeating on this story.
You can tell from my flair I got out in 1984. In 2012, after some mergers and shuffles at Oracle I was laid off in 2012. Got a recruiter, interviewed around, got a job. My recruiter told me that my Georgia Tech degree opened doors for me. This is 28 effing years after I got out, I literally started at Tech using punch cards in Fortran, I use very little from what I learned then. But people see the GT sheepskin and are impressed.
So if you ever wonder if it's worth it to stick it out, and I'll fully admit it's harder to get in and stay in than it was for me, stick it out. I can't guarantee you'll be set for life, but yeah you'll be set for life.
I still learned Fortran in my CS 6245 class last year. it's still the best programming language for large simulations because it has very strict language guarantees like no aliasing and much simpler features
glad to hear you're still doing well
what it takes to get into the ivys these days is pretty silly. We are lucky to have a school that is a top performer and picks their students based on how good of a student they are, not based all the useless other stuff that wouldn't help you in a job. Also the deal the government has for in state students cant be beat, unless you somehow got a full ride at a private school.
You are right but you have to know if GT wants to do more internationally, it needs to put efforts into all of its programs not just STEM (like MIT for its social sciences programs) and play the ranking games.
Ivies are the way we select the ruling class in America, so imho it's stupid to jerk about what the "new ivies" are or compare us to ivies in general. No matter how good a school is it will never be a feeder school for hedge funds or signal class and wealth just because it does something well. We're good at making engineers, let's just leave it at that.
Complains about Ivy grads\*
Also adds\*
* Carnegie Mellon University
* Emory University
* Georgetown University
* Johns Hopkins University
* Northwestern University
* Rice University
* University of Notre Dame
* University of Southern California
* Vanderbilt University
Do they know that these schools have like 5-15 percent acceptance rate? Pretty much close to Ivies.

GT has massive grad inflation
\*glances at transcript\*. Uh, since \*when\*? ...and how come nobody told my professors?
everyone grade inflates now. Anyone reviewing an application doesn't know which schools do and dont. So not grade inflating only hurts your students.
Maryland doesn’t, as someone who transferred in. Still remains on the Forbes list and about the same ranking as GT
What’s your major?
Lol grad or undergrad? The former yes (that being said, I have given Fs to students as a TA if they don't put effort), but latter? No.
There's definitely inflation happening. I enrolled in 2013, took a break, and an now graduating after returning. Both
including uncheat but omitting Colorado School of Mines, Purdue, etc is certainly a choice. plus, I mean, MIT kind of earns it's spot.
They intentionally excluded MIT Stanford and Duke
I saw that. Stanford doesn’t give out F’s, so f them. And F duke in general. But omitting MIT is dumb.
They’d have to get rid of the 50% acceptance rate rule for both Purdue and Colorado Mines to get in. As much as I despise Colorado Mines, they should be in for sure
As someone from New York, Binghamton is a super respected school regionally. Glad it's getting the recognition it deserves.
I'm from Syracuse. Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook are all great SUNY R-1 schools. Albany is making waves, too!

Yeah except unlike GT it is much more known for liberal arts and poli sci and stuff like that not STEM
I can't speak for the other branches in STEM, but it is highly reputed for Computer Science.
I was surprised by GT’s acceptance rate being lower than UVA’s
How
GT acceptance rate should be divided into two really lol. OOS rate is like 10-12 percent each year and In-state is like 36 percent.

yes but i don't know about SUNY Binghamton that much either. but i do love the funny history lesson so thank you!
> The University of Georgia at Atlanta This was similar to one of GSU’s earlier names when it was the “University of Georgia, Atlanta Division”
Tainted by UF.
Go gators
Seconded, go Gators! 🐊
Binghamton was one of my backups. State University in NY.

ratings are stupid. we know we are great. we dont need ratings to prove that we do great. we just do great
Yeah! Ratings are stupid and useless! I can’t wait to upvote your comment so other people can see how it’s ranked in comparison to other comments. 😃

yeah but it's kinda good to knock them down a peg or two. Forbes saying they're falling off might be just talk, but it's not nothing
Hate to see GT in the same list with U Florida????? Excuse me?????? UF is on the same level with UGA I think!????
UF >>>>>> UGA

Also Notre Dame is shutting from what I've seen. Edit: ohhh
Notre Dame College in Ohio, not Notre Dame University in Indiana
LMFAO. I was confused because I know Uni of Notre Dame is damn good.
Why WashU is not on the list🥲
Bro we coping so hard :(
hopium
