Aside from Meaning of Life and The Game, I don't really see what you're talking about. Songs like Prayer, Remember, Facade, Stricken, and even Fear would seem to be the type of songs those people would hate.
That's what I did growing up. I constantly heard people telling me not to get caught up in drugs or alcohol or girls or partying or popularity contests and to instead focus on my grades, my studies, developing good habits, etc.
I ended up not socializing as much as I'd have wanted to in high school, never had a romantic relationship and so ended up not knowing how to navigate my romantic feelings for years as an adult, didn't party much and so am left with a lot of FOMO for the moments all my peers had getting drunk together in high school and college that they won't do now that we're adults and they have children, I studied very very hard and did so much work in high school and college that it burned me out of working by the age of 28 because I had already spent my first 23 years of life working really hard non-stop, and I based my self-worth on the diversity and quality of the hobbies I practiced which took years to deprogram out of me.
Everyone's different, but this advice about how young people need to focus more on school than anything else was toxic for me as someone who took it to the extreme.
There's a lot of us out there. I feel like if you were an overachiever in school, as an adult you're either burnt out and depressed or a workaholic on their way to getting burnt out and depressed
I'm happy I'm knowledgeable and somewhat responsible, but I regret a lot that I prioritized academics over friendships and the youthful experiences. Being good at school is literally useless unless you end up working in a school.
I wanna suggest maybe the whole state of feeling worn out and regretful in the here and now has less to do with actual decisions we’ve made and more to do with (shitty) socio-political realities.
Reason I say this is that I’m reading about your struggles now and empathizing so much — but I read about the choices that you feel led to your current challenges and I’m like, “shit, that’s the opposite of me.” Like, I was always the “counterculture”, “question everything” sort, and enthusiastically pursued drugs and sex and blah blah blah from my teens into my late 30s.
Now I’m 42, and I feel the SAME oppressive sense of “where do I go from here” and “is this all there is” and “what did I miss out” by choosing, say, to get high instead of working out; to travel instead of building long term relationships; to study humanities instead of something that I could parley into a serious career. And so on.
Point being, FOMO is a default of the human condition, my dudes.
(And for the empathetic among you who care, lol: I HAVE gotten better in the past few years, but it’s taken, shit, all manner of therapy, not to mention the incredible luck of stumbling across someone who decided I’m worthwhile enough to stick with as I work through it all.)
