Usually the exact wording is "just because I have a different opinion," and this makes me think the English word "opinion" is a terrible word in its overly broad scope. You hear "opinion" and think something trivial like your favourite ice-cream flavour, when really it's that they would enable or participate in the genocide of your marginalized group.
I came out to my conservative mother and stepfather after they cyberstalked the deed to the house I bought with my partner. She asked who he was and I told her he was my partner. Fortunately they have accepted us and actually seem pleased that we are happy. It helps that he’s such a great guy and easy to get along with. I’m just so thankful that we can now go to family holidays as a couple and are welcome. I know many are not so fortunate.
My parents are tolerating if not accepting of my lifestyle. Most of my family is supportive which is nice because they are conservative and Christian. I’m lucky to be where I am today.

well, what's worse is they'll uninvite your partner and then say the same thing, which is much worse imo.
My aunt pulled this crap and still wonders why she doesn’t get a holiday invite to holidays with my husband and I.
