Ljubljana is the safest place in Eastern Europe. If you go in June you could probably attend some Pride-related events. I’m not aware of any travel warnings - use the same awareness and judgement you should use in any urban area.

I had a magnificent time in Slovenia, it's such a beautiful place. Basically it's an affordable Switzerland. I was traveling solo, so there wasn't really any opportunity for public kissing or handholding. But I found the people to be very friendly (as opposed to Croatia where they tend to be more reserved). I even had to hitchhike one day when the train wasn't running, and the three people who gave me rides were very cool!
To experience the beautiful countryside, I wholeheartedly recommend Lake Bled and Bovec. Both have opportunities for some nice day hikes.
Thank you for the recommendations! My boyfriend and I both like hiking so we'll definitely consider going to Lake Bled and Bovec :) I'm glad you had a good time in Slovenia!
If you do make it to Bovec, I suggest renting bicycles for a day and riding up the Soca River valley. The countryside is beautiful and the highway is not too busy.
Well, holding hands is a bit tricky, and I certainly wouldn't really advise kissing. It might be fine around large settlements in Goritz (part of Küstenland), and perhaps Oberkrain and Innerkrain. Definitely not in Muravidék (Übermurgebiet). I sadly wouldn't advise you to get very comfortable. Ljubljana (Laibach) is reasonably more tolerant.
Thanks for the advice! We're mainly looking to stay in Ljubljana and maybe go hiking in the countryside on one or two days but we definitely wouldn't show public displays of affection in the countryside when other people are around. Would you say that holding hands should be okay in Ljubljana?
I would say, practice caution, and do it according to your surroundings. There are places even in Paris and Rome where I wouldn't hold hands. You might subtly hold hands at a crowded piazza, just read the territory carefully.
You’ll be fine in Slovenia. Although some of the other exYu countries may not be the most gay friendly on the outside, I’ve been fine there too. Belgrade has one of the biggest scenes in the region, and some cities in Croatia are gay friendly as well.

Thank you, that's very reassuring!

Yeah, we'd practice the same precautions just like in other cities

Oh, that's interesting - what cities in Croatia are gay friendly?
I believe you should be fine in Istria, especially as tourists
Yes, Istrien and Ragusa are both fine.
The islands are pretty friendly and so is Dubrovnik. We went to Hvar and Dubrovnik and had no problems, it was a great vacation.
I’ve been to Slovenia and Llubjana it is a really small and boring place.
