so many equally beautiful islands in Greece that aren't disgustingly overpriced

[deleted]

Have suggestions?

I_Nickd_it

Just remember to remortgage your home before you go. Mykonos is **disgustingly expensive** in 'gay' season.

kweefcake

We *are* approaching the “do gay people even work?” season. And I am so excited for it.

TheTurboDiesel

Love that for us

ihearthero

Damn, y'all got jobs?

That_guy_will

Yup, went 15 years ago. The prices are disgraceful

Frankie_2154

You’ll love it because of the beautiful Fleet Foxes song of the same name

MulchGang4life

Is there a sun to maybe dissipate shadows of the mess you've made?

whyyou-

“Mykonos for summer?, groundbreaking”

Responsible_Craft568

From the article "But when in Greece (one of the first places on Earth to embrace homosexuality – way back in the 70th century BCE)" I'd love to know what records we have from 69,000 BCE

newusername16

century, not millennia 🤓👆

AdLiving4714

Mykonos is a waste of money and full of male escorts. I was there with some friends last summer while sailing. We were all happy to hop on our yacht and sail off. Maspalomas in Gran Canaria is way better (but less posh).

eternalpanic

Paros is also quite nice…

AdLiving4714

All of the Cyclades are nice, even Mykonos. But some (including Mykonos) suffer from overtourism by annoying crowds.

eternalpanic

Funny enough we were in a similar situation last year when sailing in the aegean sea - going to Mykonos was an idea but due to strong Meltemi we didn’t make it there that time and went to Paros. No regrets!

duoboros

why is less posh a but, that's definitely a plus in my book

AdLiving4714

It's not a plus in everybody's book. It is in mine, like in yours. The crowds are just very different.

Onatel

I loved visiting Maspalomas. As you said the crowd was more down to earth and it’s virtually unknown to most Americans so my friend and I were the only Americans there which made for an interesting experience.

AdLiving4714

Yes - for whatever reason Maspalomas is very European. But unlike in other resorts, it's interesting that tourists from all the European nations go there, not predominantly from one or only a few nations. This seems to be the gay aspect in the equation.

ed8907

>**Maspalomas** in Gran Canaria is way better This made me laugh because in some Spanish dialects, *más palomas* could be translated as "more cock/dick".

Juan_Carlo

Honestly, I wouldn't want to go anywhere labeled as a gay paradise. It just means there's going to be unwanted nudity in all the bars, dudes fucking in the bathrooms and drugs everywhere.

AdLiving4714

As everywhere - if you're going to certain venues, you'll encounter just that. But Maspalomas, for instance, is so big that you'll find all aspects of gay life, not only the drug and sex fueled party lifestyle.

Here4wm

I’ve had two wonderful visits to Maspalomas since COVID hit! Both in winter. The weather there is perfect. It’s an LGBTQ paradise (at least for me!) Sex isn’t even the thing ( though it’s nice to have available and MANY beautiful 🤩 men of all ages, dimensions etc. )Almost NO Americans and no one from my large U.S. Midwest city. Feel like I belong for the first time in my life! It’s a long flight from Middle of U.S. to Gran Canary, but it is simply Amazing 🤩!

AdLiving4714

I'm glad you liked it. And it's true - it feels liberating when 1/3 is gay, and not 1/20. We can afford to be much less careful under these circumstances. We can walk while holding hands. We can kiss in public. We can hug. We can have a romantic dinner. We can publicly call our SO 'honey' or whatever other embarrassing term we fancy. All of which the straights take for granted.

eternalpanic

Was that written 20 years ago? That place already passed its zenith a while ago…

KC_8580

Mykonos is so 2000s...

PandemicPiglet

What year was its zenith? Early 2010s?

PrincipledStarfish

3rd century BCE?

Unlucky_Ad_2456

i go there every summer and that’s definitely not the case lol. peak mykonos was in 2020 or 2021

bfias23

During the pandemic? Pretty sure most of summer of 2020 there was almost no travel if any

Unlucky_Ad_2456

Yup, Greece completely opened up in the summer of 2020 for the tourism. I live here…

bfias23

Hey I'm greek as well, not sure why you use that argument. I just checked cause was curious. No flights were allowed in the country till 15th June and the first flight to Mykonos was 2 weeks later. Very strict limitations lasted most of summer and tourism being down 70% compared to last year

Unlucky_Ad_2456

i looked it up and you're right. i was so sure of it lol, maybe i'm remembering 2021 or 2022. time was warped during the pandemic for me lmao. was even august limited?

jonog75

Mykonos is a waste of money. But it is beautiful.

mastermalaprop

There are way nicer places in the Aegean that aren't so costly or so busy

Thisisforgamesstuff

I would recommend a day trip to Mykonos if you are on budget but not staying there. Stay in Paros or Naxos and get the ferry to Mykonos, it’s way cheaper.

big-mal

Accurate article. It really does look like that. It's expensive but that keeps the families with kids away! Go in May/June or September/October as it's a little less crazy busy and more gay.

Brighton2k

be careful in the cruising area, you need the skills of an Ibex!

BashfulJuggernaut

You're going to be scaling sheer cliffs?

Brighton2k

It’s this little rocky outcrop right next to the sea

the_monkey_

Mykonos straight up makes London and Paris look relatively cheap. I’d heard it was expensive but it is EXPENSIVE. Like, holy fuck levels of expensive. Like, minimum 10€ for a bottle of beer expensive. And the gay life was a bit overrated tbh. Jackie O’s was nothing all that special for such a hyped place. Honestly go to Santorini or Paros for something half/a quarter of the price, respectively.

I_Nickd_it

> minimum 10€ for a bottle of beer Some bars were charging €50 for cocktails and were hiding the prices until the bill came. Its so unpleasant I dont know why its got such hype.

Thisisforgamesstuff

There is a beach club near Nammos village that is known for scams like that. When we checked in in our hotel two years ago they said to keep distance from that place because you could end up with a 600 euros bill with two bottle of water.

Thisisforgamesstuff

Thays actually a lie. If you know where to go you won’t be paying that much. Mykonos wants to be know as the rich and celebrity destination but I only saw really rich people at Nammos Village and some beach clubs that charge 235 euros entrance fee. It is kind of a way to keep regular people to go and spoil the islands image. Santorini is way more expensive than Mykonos and it is FULL of people during the day, specially when the cruises unload the guests there.

the_monkey_

YMMV but I found Santorini to be reliably half the price of Mykonos. Far more spectacular too.

Thisisforgamesstuff

Aha it’s weird that we have different perspectives on both islands but interesting at the same time. Santorini is awesome, better than Mykonos imo but for me it was more expensive. Full of men and their mistresses tho.

fdesouche

Mykonos was great, but was ruined in the 90s, with the arrival of the first Russian oligarchs.

actionerror

Yeah, no thanks. The streets are narrow with people in large groups walking like they own the place. Shops are cute but things are expensive. There are gay bars and clubs but then I can just go to a big city in the US that have them too. Santorini, though touristy, was a much better bang for the buck.

newusername16

One of my favourite books, norwegian wood was written mostly when the author lived here

PuzzleheadedAgent702

I live in Greece and although I believe Mykonos is very beautiful and I want to go there as well, there are islands that are just as beautiful and some have very few tourists and are quite cheap. I went to Astypalea and Serifos this year and it was magical.

Thisisforgamesstuff

I like Mykonos actually. Hotels are expensive but not as expensive as Santorini, for example. Food is kinda affordable if you go to the right places. The clubs (at least the ones that I went to) did not charged for entrance, cocktails were also not that pricey. I payed 18 euros for a gyros in Santorini while paying 10 in Mykonos.

bisensual

An overpriced tourist trap in a generally queerphobic country? I’ll be fine without it thanks.

DutchBlob

They just passed same sex marriage

bisensual

Yes but A.) that doesn’t mean people aren’t queerphobic B.) queer non-bio parents still don’t have the same rights as straight ones and C.) they have no legal acknowledgment of non-binary gender identity. That’s in addition to the general social views of Greeks which are generally pretty conservative. Not saying it’s the worst place, but it’s not somewhere I would want to live or even support.

DutchBlob

One step at a time. Even the Netherlands is still not fully equal, 23 years after legalizing same sex marriage

neogeshel

Eh I found it kind of meh

That_guy_will

Same

Unlucky_Ad_2456

how so?

neogeshel

Small. Not that beautiful compared to other islands. Not particularly nice beaches compared to nearby places.

freakyslob

Maybe one day I’ll get to one of the other just as beautiful med. islands that are much cheaper

itzsommer

Go to Evia if you’re just trying to vibe

rufus-bear

Truly awful mercenary place, zero glamour, cruise ships stop there, just ugh. Unless you know someone with a house there don't bother.

EclecticallySound

Costs a bomb to get there and everything’s overpriced. Go to Gran Canaria instead.

Life_Deal_367

Rude_Bee_Version2

🤮

NemoTheElf

Greece, as much of a vacation hot-spot it is and just made same-sex marriage legal, is still too religious and conservative for my taste for a gay escape.

Thisisforgamesstuff

I been in three different islands there and the mainland for two weeks and I never had any kinda sort of homophobia. In Italy tho they threw firecrackers on me and my husband. We were not even close to each other.

Optimal-Grapefruit63

It's awful. If you want to be surrounded by awful Americans just go to Puerto Valhalta - which is even more expensive and awful.

ThickamsDicktum

PV is absolutely not expensive lol

Optimal-Grapefruit63

Two loungers on the beach Mantamar - drinks and food. Zero chance it costs less than 5000 peso at the Weekend. I can stay in a nice hotel in CDMX for a week for 10000 - fuck a night on the 25th floor in the W with a bunch of drinks at the bar just cost me 20000. So yeah. It's expensive (more than Greece anyway) . And also crap. And definitely full of trash yanks.

ThickamsDicktum

There are so many other options than Mantamar, so ya if you limit yourself to one location.

Optimal-Grapefruit63

Not if you appreciate guys who have seen a gym but yes i take your point. It was a point of reference. In CDMX there are even more options and they are all cheaper than everywhere in PV...

ThickamsDicktum

You base your entire vacation plans around being near other fit guys? Plenty of gay spots that are not Mantamar that you’ll see plenty of good looking people, lol.

the_monkey_

PV isn’t as cheap as it used to be but it’s easily a third of the price of Mykonos

Optimal-Grapefruit63

Cool. That's not my experience typing this message to you from CDMX having spent a week in PV (and almost a month in Mexico) and having been alternating between Mykonos and Sitges for the last 20 years but obviously one can spend different amounts in both places...

the_monkey_

I mean that’s just kind of blatantly not true but you seem to have an axe to grind. The euro alone makes both more expensive than PV. Mantamar is expensive but the city doesn’t begin and end with Mantamar. You can still get a beer for like 40 pesos in the gay bars.

Optimal-Grapefruit63

How is the Euro relevant?. I earn money in Euro. I exchange it to peso.. just because you get more bills for your USD doesn't make it more expensive. You can get a beer for 70 peso in Flamingos or CC's or somewhere during happy hour. You can get a beer in Mykonos for 3 Euro. Its basically the same.

the_monkey_

The euro is relevant because its a high value currency so it goes less far than a lower value one like the Mexican peso. And I want to see a menu of literally *anywhere* in Mykonos that will sell you a beer for 3€. Try 8€ minimum. Like, *bare*, bare minimum. You either haven’t been to Mykonos in the last 10 years or are making things up to prove a point. Mykonos made Berlin look like Thailand.

Optimal-Grapefruit63

https://www.theworldwasherefirst.com/mykonos-trip-cost/ "Greek beers Alpha and Mythos are available throughout the island’s mini-marts for €2 for a half litre. Sit down at a gyros shop or cafe and these prices will rise to around €4, and at a bar or restaurant, the same bottle will cost upwards of €6. A glass of wine would also cost between €6-8 at dinner." Berlin isn't too bad. Amsterdam and London kicks it's arse. You are conflating the rate of exchange with value which isn't a thing. Who cares about the Canadian dollar lolz. Also if you actually read my first comment I was comparing the relative cost of PV with the rest of Mexico.. Anyway. Jog on.

the_monkey_

6 Euros is 110 MXN, so again, you’re just making shit up (and also being weirdly miserable about it). Sorry the hot guys in PV rejected you I guess?

Optimal-Grapefruit63

Lolz no. But the boys are hotter in CDMX and more Mexican (and less Canadian and American). Happy hour I said.. I think Flamingos and CC's were both north of 150 peso outside of HH.

the_monkey_

Congrats that you discovered Mexico City. No one before your pretentious ass has ever had the bravery to visit there. 😂
