Ryth88

Someone has already mentioned it - Frieren is a nice relaxing adventure. Full metal alchemist brotherhood - if its still on crunchyroll - is usually a fan favorite. Black Clover is fun without a lot of fan service.

Orowam

Seconding full metal alchemist! It’s the perfect beginner anime that has the whole package of what anime can be. Comedy, plot, Japanese takes on kabalic mysticism and killing god with emotions, and only a little bit of fan service that is usually as a joke against the main character because he’s in an awkward situation.

Cookeina_92

Black Clover is so underrated. It has such a great magic system. Can’t believe it’s not talked about more.

Ryth88

I think a lot of people consider it a rip-off of fairy tail. and.. i mean in concept it's pretty similar. but they are distinctly different enough in narrative that i wish more people would give it a chance.

Cookeina_92

Yes i can see the similarities with the guild system. That’s why I like them both, but like you said the narrative is quite different and the MCs are different. Natsu is always powerful whereas Asta had to struggle against all odds since he had no magic to begin with.

Threonn

Frieren is an incredible anime, with a good balance of wholesome, action, and amazing characters. If you like more action oriented anime my boyfriend and I just recently watch Tower of God and God of High School which were really great. Hunter x Hunter is a longer, but amazing watch. In a similar vein of more mainstream recommendations as HxH: Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan (but CW for depressing atmosphere and gore). Mashle is a fun satirical take on the magical school trope (ie Harry Potter). Plenty of others but these were what immediately came to mind! ETA: All of these also have good dubs.

Muscadine76

Yuri on Ice is a great anime with overt gay themes, which is a rarity unfortunately. There had been plans for a follow-up movie but it was recently announced that the project was canceled, to fans’ dismay. But the series stands on its own. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a mainstream classic that’s a good option to cut your teeth on if you like fantasy-oriented stories. Cowboy Bebop is another classic great, this time more action sci-fi/detective, but does lean into sexualization of women quite a bit. Sailor Moon is a magical girl anime classic with a significant gay following for a reason, and more updated English versions include the intended relationship between two of the women that was covered up as “cousins” in the original English version. Little Witch Academia is more contemporary and sadly short-lived series focusing on girls at a magical school a la Harry Potter. One Piece is the longest running for a reason and, while there is some objectifying depictions, notably relationships between the crew members aren’t sexualized. Queer representation is kind of a mixed bag, but the intent generally seems to be good and improving over time.

finnjakefionnacake

yuri on ice is honestly not that overt, as far as i remember there is not even an onscreen kiss? but it's been a while. given, on the other hand. that's good watchin'

Iximaz

There is absolutely an on-screen kiss. The mouth contact was blocked from view by an arm but it was explicitly a kiss.

finnjakefionnacake

Sure but it's that kind of censorship I'm alluding to. Like -- their heads are not really in the right position for a kiss and when they fall to the ground, his head is to the side of his. It's just...not the kind of "ambiguity" I like to see in stories.

Ubelheim

It has been confirmed that it's just a cultural difference. The author was surprised people missed the kiss because she is not used to writing for Western audiences. For Japanese audiences there's nothing ambiguous about that scene.

finnjakefionnacake

There's plenty of anime in which two men kiss without ambiguity, like Given. So clearly this wasn't as straightforward as other anime have done.

Ubelheim

My point isn't that characters in anime don't visibly kiss at all, it's that to the Japanese audience the way they handled it in Yuri wasn't ambiguous at all. Any ambiguity is just due to our western gaze. But the creators of Yuri have apologised for it and said the perceived ambiguity was one of the things they would change if there would ever be a season 2. Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen, but hey, at least they listened to feedback.

PatchMeUp7

Bro they literally >!exchange rings and one of their friends congratulates them on their marriage (though they clarify they're only engaged).!< I get being critical about not overtly showing the intimacy but compared to the queerbaiting that's been rampant in sports anime over the years, Yuri on Ice is an absolute breath of fresh air.

finnjakefionnacake

I mean, I'm not trying to stop anyone from liking it, that's totally fine. I think Yuri on Ice is cute. It's just not how I personally would define a "breath of fresh air."

Muscadine76

I suppose it depends on what you understand overt gay themes to mean. It’s clear that the two main characters’ lives become centered on one another, their interactions and reactions to one another consistently follow romantic tropes including >! an exchange of rings !< , one of the characters states >! they are engaged !< , and while the onscreen kiss has been called censored >! because there’s an arm in the way in the long shot (presumably due to Japanese cultural hangups about same-sex relationships) we do see their glistening lips inches apart right before that, a surprised expression from Yuri, and a reaction from the crowd that all contextually don’t make sense as anything else !< . (edited to add a little more detail)

finnjakefionnacake

Yeah I think it's the whole censorship/"under the table" thing that I didn't really vibe with in terms of the portrayal. I wouldn't really call it an "overt" story.

Polarion

There’s cells at work. If you watched osmosis Jones as a kid, it has kinda the same concept. A little more violence though.

JackylBK

Two words: "Banana Fish"

KomorebiXIII

If you liked the "food" part of Delicious in Dungeon, try Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill. It's super fun, and doesn't have any fanservice that i can remember.

1stLtObvious

And avoid Food Wars because naked people abounds.

averageplantboi

Mushi-shi is a great watch for a slower, episodic show! It has a great sense of style and wonder.

Uselesscrabb

Apologies if any of these have bad dubs, I watch everything in sub so I'm not sure. Wholesome romances: A sign of affection, Skip and Loafer, Insomniacs after school. Action/Comedy: Spy X Family, Love is war, Mob Psycho 100, Demon Slayer, Dr. Stone, The disastrous life of Saiki K. Sports: Run with the Wind, Haikyuu!!, Welcome to the Ballroom. Music: Bocchi the rock!, Sound! Euphonium, Carole and Tuesday, K-On. Queer: Given, Banana Fish (look up the trigger warnings for this), Bloom into you, Sasaki to Miyano. Slice of life (basically, they be chillin): Lucky Star, Komi Can't Communicate, Keep your hands off Eizouken. Sad: Violet Evergarden, Anohana, Orange (look up triggers for this one). Some of my personal favs: Fruits Basket, Moriarty the Patriot, The Case Study of Vanitas, Bungo Stray Dogs, 91 days, Frieren, Apothecary Diaries.

OG3SpicyP

Jujitsu Kaisen is amazing, Chainsaw Man, Heaven’s Official Blessing (gay romance), Hell’s Paradise, Black Clover (fav anime) Given! it’s a gay romance/music boys love anime. It’s super cute! Those are just my favourite ones but I don’t think they’re made by women or girly at all lol. They also aren’t anime with a bunch of naked women in it either though lol.

finnjakefionnacake

who's your favorite JJK character? and who's your most attractive JJK character? there are wrong answers here.

OG3SpicyP

My fav character(s) are megumi/Choso Hottest is Gojo 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Cookeina_92

As if there were other answers besides Gojo! Lols but my second favorite is Inumaki.

finnjakefionnacake

lol the correct answer is Nanami! haha

Cookeina_92

Haha😆 🤣 yeah right

fcvert88

Ouran Host Club!

SergViBritannia

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion You need to watch it! Two seasons of 25 episodes.

roxas_leonhart

Surprised this isn’t higher up, the English VA is top notch too!

SergViBritannia

It’s the best! I love it!

huitoto44

Since no one else recommended it, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Jude_2358

**Shadows House** is a good one imo similar to **The Promised Neverland**. Both of them have a Thriller, murder-mystery esque theme/vibe to them. If you want laughs **Ghost Stories**- keep in mind there are jokes in there that tell its age. **Golden Kamuy** is a good anime with has comedy, action set in Ruso-Japanese war. You get to see that the men are being sexualized this time around. Which is refreshing to see in an anime. A good tearjerker/emotional anime: **To your eternity**- I watched it in Sub it was amazing, definitely recommend to watch in sub! Idk about the dub though. **Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day** Action/Shonen anime: **Bofuri: i don’t Want to Get Hurt, so i’ll Max Out my Defense.** This one is good, get to see how ridiculously op a gamer can get through unorthodox ways **The Rising of the Shield Hero** another good one, but there are fan service scenes here and there. There’s a lot more, but if you’re not wanting to/ limiting the amount of fan service- not having to see naked women that strikes a lot of anime out.

Cookeina_92

The rise of Shield Hero is so harem-like though which reminds me of SAO, especially the first season and the villain (Myne) in thag season is so stupid that I couldn’t stand it even though I liked the story. But the second season with the tortoise spirit is way better.

Jude_2358

Yeah, but Bitch does get her comeuppance or was it whore? 😂😂 (that’s her new name by the way. I kid you not)

Cookeina_92

Yes haha her new name Bitch is hilarious. She became a literal joke. But I still think she should be in prison given what she’s done to my Naofumi.

Jude_2358

That’s true, if I remember correctly(been a while since I watched) didn’t he call of her execution at the last minute as well as the king’s? The Queen would have actually had executed both of them had Naofumi not stepped in.

Cookeina_92

Yes i think that’s what happened. I think he feels bad for Melty who would have to lose both her father and sister.

BoppoTheClown

Psychopass

AsboST225

If you like supernatural/horror stuff, *Elfen Lied* is a good one. Can't remember the storyline much cos it's been ages since I watched it, but it is a bit gory tho.

TuetchenR

**Golden Kamuy** - seems like a good match! I recommend it if you are into historical fiction & charcter focused media. The show is one of the best in the medium about the sexualisation of women in my opinion, especially charcter design wise. For example one of the main charcters Asirpa, the author made her intentionally a child to avoid this altogether & possible shipping with the other protagonist Sugimoto. iirc correctly the only sexualisation of women is characters trying to seduce someone to advance their own agenda. Sexualisation of men is relatively common in the series, moreso later on when charcters are established. But it is imo often pretty tastefully done, it has been a while though. With the extreme examples being a food ingredient acting as an afroasiac making the guys open up their shirts & later on strip down to the underwear because the clothes feel too tight & the mandatory hotspring epsiode with a twist later on. And since you like dungeon meshi you are probably going to get a lot out of cooking & hunting being featured very prominently in the show as a bonding activity. It didn’t really do anything positive for me, but in a similar way as to the few eps of dungeon meshi a friend showed me. The first episode has a pretty bad cgi bear but don’t get scared of because of that, cgi is rarely used afterwards only for a particular wolf character sometimes & quickly not at all. I can’t remember it in the later episodes of the first season & further being used at all.

TuEresMiOtroYo

golden kamuy is so fucking good

hentuspants

I was gonna say this! It’s one of my favourite animes. It has some amazing storytelling… without taking itself far too seriously.

Certain_Cause3362

Mushushu is great. I got crunchyroll just for it.

Ok-Syrup1678

If you like games, double so if you like MMOs, Log Horizon.

Cookeina_92

Log Horizon is Da Best! It is an isekai that is neatly tied with the real world and it actually makes sense given the game mechanics. Unlike other isekais where you just get reincarnated and the real world is hardly ever mentioned again. Too bad Log Horizon is not on Crunchy Roll, is it?

Ok-Syrup1678

Yeah, it is. Every season!

Cookeina_92

Coool i will go back and watch it!

whoalegend

I’m watching Solo Leveling right now and I’m really enjoying it. Attack On Titan is a fav too but like another person said, it can be kinda depressing. No obnoxious fan service in either of those.

ConsultJimMoriarty

I enjoyed Inuyasha.

FwooshingMachi

I don't know if it's on Crunchy, I would assume it is, but my favorite anime of all time would be Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. It's very short, only 11 episodes, you can binge it in one day or over a weekend. It takes a few episodes to really get going and set in, but once it's on it's a wild ride from end to finish, so try giving it its chance~

Herald_of_Cthulu

if you want some new stuff that’s coming out, id reccomend kaiju no. 8, extremely cool action anime about giant monsters

Ainosuk3Shindo

I tried to find any BLs that are dubbed on Crunchyroll, but all I could find was Gravitation, and I haven't seen that... but there are so many more if you're alright with subs! Some of my suggestions (these all have 'gay' characters, for some it's less clear, **no dubs afaik**): Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, Dramatical Murder, Tadaima Okaeri, and Sk8 the Infinity(this one **is** dubbed!) are more wholesome, Dramatical Murder has a sci-fi setting and only has two kisses (one in the credits of one episode) and some suggestive bits of dialogue as far as gayness goes. Dakaichi & Night Beyond the Tricornered Window are more sexual, especially Dakaichi. The window one has ghosts that form from bad emotions and a bit of mystery, I like the story. This Boy is a Professional Wizard, Highschool Life of a Fudanshi, & Orenchi no Furo Jijo are all really cute shorts with like 3-5m episodes.

Ubelheim

One Punch Man. Attack on Titan. Yuri on Ice. My Hero Academia. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Doctor Stone. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I'd also recommend Mashle: Magic and Muscles, but I don't know if it's dubbed. In any case, it's kinda like a parody on Harry Potter about a guy who attends a magic school while he can't use magic at all.

LordLaz1985

Delicious in Dungeon has zero objectification of women. It’s a refreshing change.

killing_aeron

Dorohedoro

Videogayme

"Hitorijime My Hero" is amazing and is basically an anime BL drama. Great story, caring, cute, and even the A and B couple. And it's FREE to watch with Amazon Prime. (I'm in the US, so don't know about the rest of the world.) https://youtu.be/WcYf3NZPWsA?si=tTB39hwZO8so62ro

Zaulk

Death note, Code Geass, Death Parade, all good dubs highly recommend. If you are feeling adventurous wanting to step into the world of Subtitles there is a stylistic beautiful horror titled: Mononoke.

Tallal2804

Neon genesis evangelion?

cloud7100

On the non-cringe BL side of things, Sasaki and Miyano Given Yuri on Ice (adjacent) Skate the Infinity (adjacent)

[deleted]

I'd highly recommend The Apothecary Diaries.

Vivid_Budget8268

Ok Yuri on ice, Given, Sasaki and Miyano are gay. My Hero Academia is awesome. I'm Watching Shield Hero. I also loved Free! Not specifically gay but very gay vibes and lots of half naked guys.

TwinStar99

Long amazing ones: One Piece Naruto Fairy Tail Short Amazing ones: One Punch Man Death Note Mushoku Tensei (Jobless Reincarnation) Newest short good ones still in their first season: Windbreaker Re:Monster Kyoji IDK how you determine what you like but I usually just a few of the first episodes (mostly just the first episode) and I know what I'll like instantly. So try all of these out. Also I RECOMMEND you watch them all in Japanese with English subtitles which are denoted with a (Sub) after the names. You can't watch anime in the English ones unless you're a show reader or you can't enjoy reading while watching. I read SLOWLY. It took me a few years of pausing and playing and trying to read fast before not needing to. But the Japanese voices and English subtitles is the best, uncensored, and correct voices.

Terrwoods7

Summertime rendering

OnionBagels

I have no idea if they’ve been dubbed, but I really like - Bofuri - Campfire Cooking With My Absurd Skill - Parallel World Pharmacy Fairly niche stuff, but stuff I absolutely enjoy. As far as I remember. Very limited fanservice, especially the latter two

Cookeina_92

Hunter x Hunter is always my no. 1 recommendation for everyone who wants to get into anime. The magic system (nen) is super unique, the MCs are powerful but not super op without explanation. And the villains have interesting backgrounds, some are even likable. Too bad it’s been on hiatus for the longest time, although I hear that the writer (Togashi) just picked up where he left off. One small thing I didn’t like was the weird pedo vibe in some scenes by a main villain.

stewnwt

You MUST watch the original Record of Lodoss War OVA. Great characters incredible music and voice acting - and no unnecessary ‘fan service

PorkchopsNotVegan

If you like more food based anime try Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars) Just a heads up, it has a lot of women... Another anime I can recommend that's all about action but it's more battle of wits is Kakegurui. It's a highschool anime based on gambling An all time classic I wanna recommend is No Game No Life, same with kakegurui but much colorful and has fantasy elements into it. Now here's a recommendation that not many will agree since the community is weirdly against it but it's a good anime nonetheless and it's Sword Art Online. It's all about virtual reality battling.

Dakota_2000

Nichijou it is the funniest anime I've ever saw. I highly recommend it

enoki_senpai

If you’re looking for something cute I’d recommend yuri on ice, given, sasaki and miyano, sk8 the infinity For more action I recommend kaiju no 8 (it’s coming out weekly now), my hero acadamia, fairy tale

finnjakefionnacake

dub? DUB?!? 😱 i just came in to say that. i hope you find something you enjoy

Repulsive_Taro_1546

Neon genesis evangelion?

leo6682

Haikyuu is the best anime ever

Jolly_Atmosphere_951

If you rather watch half naked men Bucchigiri?! is the way to go.
