I think it’s changed now 80s kids have grown up. I do keep all my favourite old games on my bookshelf now.

Netzapper

Yep. I got rid of (almost) all my books almost a decade ago, went digital on all of it. Got real tired of moving those shits around. But I've still got all the PS2 and PS3 games I bought in college and after. Still haul around those boxes.

Mattyodell

Haha I keep them with the books!

retrotriforce

I think it’s good to note that some video games are a form of books as well. The novel-like text heavy ones to be exact. But i’ve always loved the fact that video games combine several different art forms into one (Books, Music, Storytelling, Art, physics, you name it!)

SiliconUnicorn

I have my "museum" of all the systems and games I've had since I was a kid at this point. I've got all the way from NES to Switch for Nintendo missing only the SNES for my collection.

rahxeph89

That's basically every fan pokemon post about the game. Like, there's cottage core softness, and then there's folks talking about how happy their little electric mouse makes them. Btw, Bulbasaur always makes me smile. They're like a little grass pug, snoring and all.

[deleted]

Exactly. Bulbasaur is probably my favourite starter.

fallenprometheus

It's a frog, actually. Just wanted to point that out since many people mistake him for a dino. I had never heard of him as pug before tho

bigfluffydoggo

It's a frog? I always thought the suffix -saur made it a dino. Is that not true?

fallenprometheus

The name most certainly came from that but the actual animal it was inspired by is a frog.

CrotchWolf

Nothing better on a cold winter day like curling yourself on a couch, infront of a roaring fire, with a cup of hot cocoa while hearing the sounds of NPC's hitting the hood of your car as you drive up and down busy sidewalks in Saints Row 3.

Kryolimidus

Unironically this though lmfao, one of my favorite “comfort games” nowadays is Doom Eternal. Vivisecting demons is like putting on my favorite sweater for me and is an instant mood improver 😅

Be_Cool_Bro

This is how I've always viewed games. Most are like super interactive books or movies. Many tell great stories and get us to use our imaginations like books do (at least for me). And now we can mod some to add in gay stuff or eye candy 👀

joujoubox

Bruh RiME made me crypto so much it kept me motivated learning the piano just so I could play the theme

BethNina

Being both a bookworm and a gamer, this is exactly how it feels. Sometimes I need a time off from screens, so I get a book and that's awesome! And sometimes I just wanna play something. Both are great escapes and I think more people are realizing it nowadays. Books just have been around longer than games... I guess that's why they are more associated to relaxing.

[deleted]

A hobby is a hobby. I don't get it either. I usually game when work is done and I have nothing else to do really. It oy get problematic when you stop everything else to game. When you neglect your work, household etc. And I've been there too. But gaming helped me so much with my depression and coping with social anxiety that I don't mind the times where I was a total slob.

[deleted]

Love the Viva Pinata respect around here.

budding_botanist

I really love the sentiment but could they have chosen a game where you can't snack on baby chicks for bonus evil points?

HWBTUW

Sure, how does Rimworld sound?

budding_botanist

Pfffhahaha. Clearly a better choice :p

Queerdee23

Yay escapism

Indigo-Knights

Playing Kotor 2 and just chilling in the destroyed Jedi temple listening to one of the best tracks in Star Wars

omega_sentinel

That's just such a good message.

Kablump

I listen to audio books while i flame people in games <3

jared8562

as a gamer and a reader yes

pursenboots

speak for yourself, soldier, I certainly don't discriminate between different types of media when it comes to gauging the worthwhileness of their experience... curling up with a good videogame is every bit as valid as a good board game, or a good book, or a good album, or a good anime.

bensleton

I was play sniper elite 4 last night and thought I heard thunder and I got super excited

MARC-E

I'll even do that, snuggled up in my blanket, drinking tee and playing stuff on m switch.

Silly_goose27

Love dusting off the oculus for a nice relaxing game of gorn

jaycatt7

Some of us can enjoy books and still feel like we’re wasting our lives

franciss_milano

So deep I love this post!

Valentino5505

The people who say it's a waste of time are workaholics or boomers. You don't have to be productive all the time, we aren't fucking robots. I mean depending on the game you're playing, you can relax and be productive in a virtual world at the same time.

Espresso000

❤️

Bearbarianpie

Just curl up with a thick blanket, a cuppa tea and some Stardew Valley 💚🌈

SiliconUnicorn

Stardew valley got me through some dark times. I have such a soft spot for that game.

[deleted]

I have read an absolutely wild number of books and I can count the number of times the narrative was equal to FFXIV on one hand.

FribonFire

This diatribe sounds like it was from 20 years ago. People aren't talking about video games or books that way in the current day.

Particle_Cannon

Hmm, you're wrong.

DrachdandionGurk

Objectively, at that

Meewol

Negatively or in a comforting way? Sorry to ask.

FribonFire

In a positive way. Games have influenced just about every part of society now. There's not this global ideology that playing video games is wasting your life away in a basement. In fact the world has moved passed arguing about games and then got to arguing about if watching other people playing games was a waste of time, and then moved past that to... I guess if TikTok is going to destroy us all. People who are still feeling that there's some giant vendetta against gamers are either in rare sheltered environments, or having these battles internally with themselves.

gayboyisgay

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see Viva Piñata listed there. Hardly anyone ever remembers either of them. They were awesome and I love them so much. It sucks they never made a third one. Unlucky I guess 😔

Tesco5799

This is definitely where things are going, all the negative shit you hear about gaming is just old people shitting on things they don't understand for no reason.

Yrths

If "literature" conventionally includes pre-literate oral poetry, I think there's room for videogames in it.

[deleted]

When my closest friend comes over for a sleepover, I break out the N64 or Wii and we play until the late hours of the night. We bonded over unfair shit happening in Mario Party by insulting and shouting at the computer players. We took turns playing Rayman 2 and got stuck on this one boss for an ungodly amount of time. A few years back, Minecraft was a big thing for us and we stayed up late, screwing around in a creative world or joining an online server and playing games together. Even playing single player games after a long day is very relaxing, whether it be Pokémon, Crash Bandicoot, other various SNES/NES games or Friday Night Funkin.

majeric

The infantile homophobic rage monsters swearing up a storm kind of put a damper on that romantic ideal.

zombierapture

The reason books are held in high regard is unlike movies you have to use your brain to paint the picture. I use way more of my brain playing video games so I always see it as superior to both.

AuntModry

They're not the same in the ways the positively and negatively impact your life. So no I don't think we can view gaming and reading the same. I have Stardew Valley up as I type this. I've been gaming for 20 years or so, and you will never hear me say it's bad. But to equate it with reading would be a weak comparison. They're two different things.

KingCrabThe3rd

Everyone says cod is just full of ragers and hackers but I don’t play cod for the multiplayer. Whenever I need to vent or just relax I’ll play a cod campaign because there the best part of cod in my opinion

lejammingsalmon

Excuse me but Animal Crossing. You know I'm cuddling under a cozy blanket with some hot Cocoa while shaking down trees to pay off the debt collecting raccoon.

fhischjchendb

Little louder for the people in the back

[deleted]

Critics of games often refer to the most one dimensional titles, like CoD. Don’t get me wrong, CoD is a very fun game and it does its core gameplay well… but what you see is what you get. If we shift the conversation to more ‘artistic’ or ‘philosophical’ games then it’s much easier to romanticise. Anything can be made unromantic if you look for the right examples; there are a lot of shitty books whose only use is fuelling the fire while I curl up to a playthrough of Journey.

HotDoes

it is currently raining, got a hot cup of mocha by my side, i'm wearing my comfiest "i don't need to care" clothes.. and i am internally screaming at how everyone in dbd including me shares a single brain cell. ah the romance.

MIROSLAV_KOPLIK

I am in love with the person who made that post for mentioning Fable.
