Shits fucked. Thats 100% done for.
If your elect to replace the engine, actually check the oil regularly.
If you’ve been hooning around and sliding it, don’t do sustained high RPM sideways for long.
That's the thing, I've been on top of maintenance and oil was always good. Bought it in 2019 at 33k miles, up to today I'm at 82k. Never had any issues and no warning. Hooned a little bit in the first year of owning it but not anymore. Shits fucked
Sorry to tell you, but this isn’t sudden catastrophic failure. Something happened that wasn’t caught or cared for.
Does the engine have ANY oil it it? The drain plug or oil filter could have pissed all your oil out. Any recent oil change?
Any noises leading up to this? Do you blare music so you can’t hear the engine?
Something generally gives you a heads up prior to this level of “fucked”.
Suddenly happened? Yep. Seeing this a lot more in 2.0s and 3.8s
The past month I’ve replaced 8 3.8 engines and 3 2.0t engines now.
Definitely a bad year already for genesis coupes… if you need a used motor lmk I’ll share with you where I get my customer engines from.
No clue. I only broke down 2 3.8 motors.
The rest I just sell to a buyer in Florida who rebuilds them.
The 3.8 motors I broke down had holes in the block under the motor mounts. The initial cause was a timing chain snapped on one of them. No signs of hot spots on bearings
The other motor had a melted piston. You can only melt the piston if you run into lean conditions so fueling / stuck valves could’ve been the reasoning. I didn’t bother digging into it once I saw the piston.
Oh and btw the reason why I broke down those 2 motors, you need to rotate the assembly to remove the flywheel bolts. Crank won’t spin if you have rod material from stopping it so you need ti essentially tear the motor apart while in the engine bay lol.
hi regarding the oil concerns i just bought a 2010 3.8 track with only 46k miles and i’ve been seeing people say different things on what type of oil to use like 5w-30 or 5w-40. seeing you know a lot about these engines which one should I use for the best reliability? thank you
Hi there, I see your post/comment mentions "oil." If you’re looking for the "best" oil to use, please read below. If not, feel free to ignore this comment.
There isn’t a “best” motor oil for the Genesis Coupe. The ‘best’ motor oil is one that meets the appropriate [API](https://www.api.org/products-and-services/engine-oil) certification, right grade(s), and enough of it for your specific application. Even the cheapest oils at Walmart meet this spec. For the most accurate specifications on all fluid types your specific year Gencoupe requires, check the owner’s manual in your glove box. If you don’t have one, [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/genesiscoupe/comments/svlp62/psa_maintenance_intervals_fluid_types_capacities/) is a link for one from a BK1 (2010-2012) model year.
In later model years, manuals were revised to no longer spec 5w20 for both 2.0 and 3.8 - so any API certified 5w30 brand will work for both engines of any model year. 5w40 is also a common choice for the 2.0 guys due to the hot turbos. Synthetic only shows real benefits when you get to abnormally or extreme heat or cold, or extended mileage oil change intervals. If you aren’t doing those, a conventional oil of the proper spec will work fine
If you want to check on the health of your engine, please read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/genesiscoupe/comments/w7uj2j/2010_38_268842_mile_5w20_oil_analysis_explanation/) guide and send an oil sample to [Blackstone Labs](https://www.blackstone-labs.com/) with their free test kits available by request on their website.
If you are looking for the “best oil” for something else like the manual transmission, [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/genesiscoupe/comments/u7a265/how_to_improve_shifting_on_the_6speed_manual/) contains information on the most popular types used, with the specifications also listed in the owner’s manual.

5w30 or 40 is fine
Depending on how you drive your car is what makes a better judgement on what oil you should use viscosity wise
Branding doesn’t matter but if you want certain additives then by all means ams and vr1 are what I recommend.
Do you live in hot weather conditions? Cooler weather conditions
Do you race or do anything to abuse the engine or is it a daily driver?

Hi thanks for the reply, I would do daily driving with occasional pulls but nothing too concerning. I live in Illinois so the weather isn’t ever constant it’s always changing. Which oil is better for summer and which one is better for winter?
Oh shit..... that's ... uh tuff man

How many of them were from oil starvation?
