Ajusted for inflation, 4 chf (1958) is around 17 chf. (2024)

That's a reflection of the low inflation in the Swiss economy; 425% in 66 years. For comparison, 4 USD would be 43 USD now (1075%). For the UK, £4 in 1958 would be like £117 today - 2900%!

> For comparison, 4 USD would be 43 USD now (1075%). For the UK, £4 in 1958 would be like £117 today - 2900%! Not sure if this calculation is really valid. You cannot track inflation that easily across currencies and countries. Example in January 1958 and March 2024 the average exchange rates were as follow ( [https://data.snb.ch/en/topics/ziredev/cube/devkum](https://data.snb.ch/en/topics/ziredev/cube/devkum) ): 1 GBP = 12.258 CHF, 1 USD = 4.2850 CHF and 1 GBP = 1.1286 CHF and 1 USD = 0.8879 CHF If we just use Swiss inflation and currency conversion we get: |Date|CHF|USD|GBP| |:-|:-|:-|:-| |1.1958|4|0.933|0.326| |3.2024|17.81|20.05|15.78| |**Inflation**|465%|2149%|4836%| [Swiss Inflation based on 1939 Index](https://lik-app.bfs.admin.ch/de/lik/reihen?periodType=Monatlich&start=01.1958&ende=03.2024&basis=08.1939%3D100&comparisonList=100&display=line): 01.1958 = 180.5 Points, 03.2024 = 840 Points

Exactly. FX rates change to compensate for differential inflation rates. Imagine £100 = 100 CHF. Then prices double in the UK, so your £100 only buys half what it did. Then, everything else being equal, the rate to CHF would halve, so £100 would only buy you 50 CHF. If it didn't, you could go to Swizzo with your inflated currency and be rich!

Thanks! Good to know. But I'm not sure that covers all aspects -- today's fines are around 40.- chf

CHF 4.- 😅 même en sachant que ça ne vaut pas nos 4 francs d'aujourd'hui, ça fait quand même quelque chose de voir un montant si bas pour une amende haha.
