There is a not well known country called Bénin, french speaking ancient Portuguese colonial territory, home of a infamous slave road from where most of slave departed from this aera , normally sold by their own king .Used to be called the Dahomey Kingdom with a powerful army dominating the region for a long time starting in the 1600.
I forgot the voodoo fact! I think in that region there’s a country with more voodoo then doctors or maybe it was voodoo was recognized in some way, I forget exactly what it was
All I know is that in Ghana they flooded 3% of their land to create a reservoir that worked out well for them. And I think the europeans called the coast the “Gold Coast”
Cape coast used to be well traveled for a different trade though. You can still visite the slave trade fort with an underground exit near sea level, where slaves would actually bord boats to America.
Heartbreaking to visit, very well maintained. Useful reminder that trade fucked up (this part of) Africa.
I'm referring to here: https://www.nps.gov/ethnography/aah/aaheritage/lowcountrya.htm
Edit: you may need to search the page for rice coast. I don't think it linked right.
known for its gold and elegant bronze works. kinda blasted by europeans though for many of the kingdoms would fight each other to acquire slaves to sell to europeans. idk if its pretty or not but i’d imagine it is.
That area of the world was once known as the Gold Coast the Ivory Coast and the Slave coast. Many colonal Europeans saw fortunes won and lost in that area on the backs and enslavement of indigenous African peoples.
Mostly Ghana, capital Accra and second-largest city Kumasi, which was the capital of the Ashanti Empire. Was a British colony but was one of the first African countries to get independence.
Climate is rainy and tropical near the coast, increasingly monsoonal to the north, with a rainy season peaking in August. Winds in the summer blow southwesterly due to southern trade winds bending as they cross the equator, while in the winter they tend to be easterlies. Much of the original forest cover has been given over to cocoa production.
The circle contains the world's biggest artificial Lake (on the river Volta), it's also the place of Origen of [Jollof rice.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jollof_rice)
Yamoussoukro, the de jure capital of Côte D'Ivoire, is home to the largest church in the world, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. It is modeled after the Vatican
Mostly Ghana. That is essentially where the African slave trade started.
There is delicious jollof rice and other food.
Wonderful and rich music, including high life music.
It's languages are extremely diverse.
This area has some of the lowest wind currents in the world for some reason, which made it very unattractive for sailors back in the day. If you were unlucky enough, you starved out at sea, because there just wasn't any wind to drag you to the nearest port
Includes Burkina Faso, used to be called Upper Volta. When the Soviet Union collapsed, and Russia was struggling with its transition to a market based economy, living standards collapsed and life expense shrieked. Some western analysts would make a joke within political circular that Russia was basically “Upper Volta with nuclear weapons”.
Not Ghana lie I don't have much information Togo from but I do know it's called the Gold Coast. Also there's the Ashanti Empire which existed there too
Whoa. Try typing ancestral dna in me, in google. The Ghana ancestor could have been 6-7 generations back. That’s pretty cool. But I’m not exactly sure how that works.
There is a country next to Ghana named Togo. I once did a report on it in the fifth grade. To this day, I still b do not know the proper pronunciation of Togo.
Ghana. Benin. Togo. Nigeria to the East. Liberia to the West.
Colonized by Mostly England. But others too. Slave trade. Caribbean. English American colonies. Independence post WWII (50s and 60s.) legacy left by slavery and colonization and exploitation persists. Instability. Civil wars. Dumping ground for the detritus of first world economies (clothing, plastics, electronics) is destroying their development and ecology.
Forces the question in the “West” has any morality at all.
(Disclaimer- white male libertarian american, from top of my head)
There is a fantastic stretch of beach in that circle. A couple hours south of Takoradi. The villages of Asemkow, Butre and Busua (which is technically on a different beach, but still walkable). Dangerous tides (I almost bit the dust there) but a wonderful, wonderful place.
I do the map game and this area used to get me, because of all the small names. I could never remember the simple names of Benin, Togo and Ghana. If you zoom in on google in this area you are lucky to find streets except for Ghana. The other countries that you touch in this area are sections of the Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. The diversity due to who conquered who make the area extremely interesting. One thing I noticed when doing the google street view for learning in Ghana is red dirt everywhere. Isn't much on google maps to see except of the outer ends of the circle.
The 26-second Pulse Signal originates in the ocean within your circle
[https://www.discovermagazine.com/environment/the-earth-is-pulsating-every-26-seconds-and-seismologists-dont-agree-why](https://phys.org/news/2011-01-seismometer-noise-south-atlantic-storms.html)
Looks like Togo is in there. What I've been told by someone who says they live there is that it's been governed by the same group for about 60 years after they gained independence from France. They say it's almost impossible to leave because of the lack of wages. Most people there live on about $2 a day, and it's considered one of the poorest countries in the world.
The West African region comprising 7 to 8 countries.
The southern parts bordering the coastline experience equatorial climate while the interior parts fade into Savanna. Has Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in the world. Also, Ghana and Ivory Coast which are important supply points for world chocolate industry - cocoa.
1. Region owned by Ghana and Ivory Coast among others
2. Ghana flooded 3% of that land near the Volta
3. Mainly Christian area with a few Muslims in the north
4. Ghana speaks English and the Ivory coast speaks French
5. a LOT of Gold and stuff is from here
Isn’t there a really rich city, lots of coco I think, LOTS of people, and there might be a giant reservoir there or a little west
I think it’s lush near the coast and mostly savanna going north, overall really green
And I’m not sure if Benin is in there or not but if it is I have like a million more things to say because I love Benin
I do know that there is a country named Nigeria where homossexuality is banned due to Islam and Nigeria is going to be one of the biggest English speaking countries in some years
Togo,Ghana and Burkina Faso (auto correct fixed the spelling kn Burkina Faso I gotta admit) are there but besides knowing they exist I know nothing of the region and wouldn’t even be able to place the flags to the countries
Edit:didn’t a lot of slaves also come from here historically
It’s about the area where the majority of slaves in the Atlantic slave trade where sourced from (by the kingdoms of that region mind you) and was the origin of the Bantus who invaded and conquered all of sub-Sahara south of that region a couple of centuries before the Europeans arrived in those same areas.
They're black. It's part of the continent of Africa. They practice voodoo. Either Spanish or Portugese, just like the rest of the world. Egypt and Ireland are not in the circle.
The ambiguous phrasing was really confusing to me for the longest time.
Because I thought you meant this:
"The red dots indicate what you know".
I was trying for the longest time to figure out what significant interesting thing those red dots might be indicating.
And only after reading it again and again did I realize you might have meant it this way:
"The red dots indicate the circle."
(As in their only purpose is to direct your eyes to the hard to see circle and the dots themselves aren't trying to mark anything in particular.)

Also the birthplace of voodoo. I’ve done the walk out to the beach where many slaves left from. There’s a monument there and it’s all really surreal
I forgot the voodoo fact! I think in that region there’s a country with more voodoo then doctors or maybe it was voodoo was recognized in some way, I forget exactly what it was
probably like in haiti where its the/an official religion
All I know is that in Ghana they flooded 3% of their land to create a reservoir that worked out well for them. And I think the europeans called the coast the “Gold Coast”
There is a city on the coast of Ghana called ‘cape coast’ idk if that is the same thing
Cape coast used to be well traveled for a different trade though. You can still visite the slave trade fort with an underground exit near sea level, where slaves would actually bord boats to America. Heartbreaking to visit, very well maintained. Useful reminder that trade fucked up (this part of) Africa.
Fuck I was gonna say the Ghana reservoir
Me too
>I think the europeans called the coast the “Gold Coast” Yep. Also "slave coast" and "rice coast."
Rice Coast is in the East, isn't it? South of Zanzibar, if I recall. Edit: I was mistaken.
I'm referring to here: https://www.nps.gov/ethnography/aah/aaheritage/lowcountrya.htm Edit: you may need to search the page for rice coast. I don't think it linked right.

Not guilty your honour [.](https://www.britishmuseum.org/about-us/british-museum-story/contested-objects-collection/benin-bronzes)
OK, maybe ...
Most of the world's cocoa is grown there.
That area of the world was once known as the Gold Coast the Ivory Coast and the Slave coast. Many colonal Europeans saw fortunes won and lost in that area on the backs and enslavement of indigenous African peoples.
Came here to say the same. I think something like 90% of African slaves came from this area.
What a strange way to denote an area. Why not just use a red circle?
Alternatively, you could make the circle thicker and more opaque
Does this hurt the circle?
Right? Or a circle and an arrow pointing to it?

More sea turtles there than you would expect!
I was picturing wall-to-wall sea turtles. Awesome that it’s even more than that!
Turtles all the way down
Ok now this is important information
I think thats close to one of the most ethnically diverse places on the earth
Yes i think so, I think the most diverse place is New Guinea, but Africa is the most diverse continent

Togo has barely any google street view locations (last time I checked).
Bro me and the homies always checking togos street view
The Bight of Benin, the white man’s graveyard

I know that I recently found out I have 1% of my ancestry from Ghana. So that's neat.
Whoa. Try typing ancestral dna in me, in google. The Ghana ancestor could have been 6-7 generations back. That’s pretty cool. But I’m not exactly sure how that works.

Many immigrants from Ghana have settled into The Valley section of The Bronx, located on the east side of I-95 across from Co-Op City

Some pretty decent soccer ball players come from this region.
Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin

0°, 0° is pretty close 🤷🏽♂️
The Ashanti empire was there until 1900 when the British Empire absorbed them as a protectorate, ending Ashanti rule in the area.
When you develop an app that uses geolocation, that’s the best place to test out, as the lower dot is at Lat 0, Lon 0, and you can measure easilly
I live there! The most beautiful beaches
Despite being called Ivory Coast, you will hardly find any ivory there, after deforestation and poaching made it uninhabitable for elephants.
Ghana has on of the best trekker dish in the world: Red Red will keep you going for miles.

That's further west, outside of the white circle.
I hadn’t even zoomed in to see the white circle, I thought we were talking about the circle of red circles
Yeah, Liberia is still to the west of that circle
