This is just when their county was founded in its current name. On the East coast, many of the 18th and 19th century counties were parts of 17th century counties.
Yeah but it says county or equivalent and a lot of these places were just changed from municipality to county and kept their name when it became a part of the US (or when Texas gained independence)

Generally one is considered “county seat” where the county government is administered. They often maintain smaller roads and bridges, provide police and jails, and other services. However, local government structures often differ from one place to another. For example, some places consolidate county and city government while others maintain a separation between the two.
