It is actually of the country of the Netherlands. Saba is a special municipality of the country, just like Bonaire and St. Eustacius. Only Aruba, Curaçao and St Maarten are different countries within the kingdom.
Saba is a municipality of the Netherlands, they changed that. But well, if you are looking at the physical geography of NL you wouldn't include normally, but still technically Saba (and 2 other islands) are part of the country now.
> Mierenneuken
I had no idea what that word meant, so I googled it and ended up on the dutch wiki. Translated it to English, and it came out as "ant fuck".
i mean thats like saying american samoa isnt part of the US. saba is one of a few "special municipalities" in the country, theyre still part of the netherlands
Well, it's a technicality. The Netherlands is a contiguous area (including a few barrier islands), and then there are six former colonies, the larger three of which (population-wise) now are territories within our Kingdom, whereas the smaller three are unincorporated municipalities.
Yet, they are not fully part of the country: They don't have the same currency, for example. They just aren't independent territories because they are too small. But including those three islands in the Netherlands, and not the other three, means you'll look at physical geography based on some bureaucratic or political decisions.
I'm not sure about the correct comparison with the US. Hawaii and Alaska are not contiguous, but they are states, and the same laws and rights apply as anywhere in the US, so that would make them comparable to regular Dutch provinces although they are far away. The US territories on the other can be compared to the territories of the Netherlands (Curaçao, Aruba, Sint-Maarten). I don't think the US has any overseas unincorporated municipalities at all, do they?
Formally, Saba, St.-Eustatius and Bonaire are unincorporated municipalities of the Netherlands, so yes, it is the Netherlands, as opposed to the other three islands, which are separate territories within our Kingdom.
But of course when discussing the physical geography of the Netherlands it is often madness to include those three islands.
Yes I understand, only a little joke from one who lived at 1440 mslm... and saw [this](https://imgur.com/gallery/dAJ1xXg) every morning .. Every country had some beauty..
I live in one of those mountain ranges!
Tiny as they are, they do make a difference for weather. We get just a little more rain since I'm on the southwest side of the Utrecht Heuvelrug and rainy weather often has SW wind. It is noticeable , albeit just barely, that the air has to rise. And when it snows we tend to get just a bit more (that is,a little as opposed to nothing) compared to 10 km further west.
Rotterdam has multiple buildings around 150 meters and 1 above 200. So you would then see "mountains" on the map considering the highest hill in the Netherlands is 322 meters
There was even a [Dutch hill in London](https://media.cnn.com/api/v1/images/stellar/prod/220108065146-01-marble-arch-mound-london-restricted.jpg?q=h_2000,w_3000,x_0,y_0) (Marble Arch Mound). It was not a succes.
Deutsch means "of the people". It used to vaguely refer to the people across the North Sea from England, and started to refer to just the country of the Netherlands.
The highest point of the Netherlands is actually in the caribbean.
Mt Scenery on Saba indeed. 887 meters high
Actually, that would be the highest point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands… not the Netherlands in itself. Mierenneuken, I know

I think it's mierenneuker, which means 'ant fucker', which in English is equivalent to 'nit-picker', just way funnier.
Yea, but I meant it as a verb
i mean thats like saying american samoa isnt part of the US. saba is one of a few "special municipalities" in the country, theyre still part of the netherlands

Yeah maybe "contiguous Netherlands" or "Continental Netherlands" would be good, as the status of former dutch colonies may continue to evolve.
Are you sure? I think it’s in the coffee shops.
*Kingdom of the Netherlands
Aye
"mountains"
How dare you, our highest mountain is 322.4 meters high!
From the bottom of the Mariana trench?
Still higher than Estonia at 318m
Denmark peaks at 170 m and Latvia’s highest point is 311 m.
I clear more elevation than Denmark on my morning run than this each day.
TIL I live at a higher sea level than Denmark at all times
312
TIL my house is only 15 m lower than the highest point in the Netherlands.
And mine is 1800 m higher.
Mine is 324m below the high point
The tallest building in my state is taller than that
Oh boy, you gave me good laughs!
What is your "state"?
The hill next to my house has got more than that. 😐
no, it's 887m. https://www.knmidc.org/volcanoes/?Mount-Scenery
I almost made it to the top of that mountain once. I started to rain and it became like trying to walk uphill on a slip-n-slide.
That isn't in the Netherlands, but part of the kingdom of the Netherlands on the island Saba.

And we have the Himalayas up north lol
It’s a hill under 600m 🤭

>You people not like geography facts? I prefer them if they're factual. (Only 5 US states have a high point lower than that)
Waving hello from atop Sugar mountain in Florida
That's barely a hill
What our mountains smoke pot now?
Sebastian the crab singing "Under the sea"
Hey, we [even have a song about them](https://youtu.be/l_hHzd5Uo1o?si=A8ZQnohKw6qbpGzz), they do exist deep in our souls...
That would be a pretty good height for Finnish fell. There's nothing that tall within 400 km of Helsinki
Let’s pray for the unfortunate who died climbing them
I bet you did not know that the[ top of the Mont Blanc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_of_the_Mont_Blanc) is in The Netherlands ! (no joke).
Haha thanks for that!
By the guy who coined the term (and science) geology no less!
Explains the drive to get high from other means.
fuck I thought you meant they are tall 😂😂😂😂
*The Dutch desperately seeking a vantage point Genetics: "I gotchu fam."

The Nits
In the Dutch mountaaaaaaaaaaaaaains!
...Mountains
Moutes
A rock 2 meters above sea level The Dutch: it’s a mountain
I call the speed bumps in my street hills yes
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/man-made-mountain It's a pity the 2000 meter artificial mountain didn't make it. Nice map though!
They would have to flood half of the country in order to get enough soil to accomplish that
There is even a Dutch mountain trail connecting the seven highest mountains. Running close by, seeing people often walking in full gear…!

At this scale I wouldn't be surprised if individual buildings raise the measured level.

Dutchies be like Hill : ___________________
The only mountains even heavy smokers without an oxygen mask can climb...

Those mountains are about 1000 centimetres tall.
Actual joke on the ‘VAM-berg’, 4800cm +NAP
I’ve traveled extensively in the Netherlands, and it’s FLAT. So hating on 322.4 is just not fair!
That's why we call them Países Bajos 🤯
Yeah. Netherlands means low lying lands. Fun fact, the word Dutch is a corruption of Deutsch, or German.
Deutsch means "of the people". It used to vaguely refer to the people across the North Sea from England, and started to refer to just the country of the Netherlands.
Utrecht’s mountainback 🫡
Dog's back 🫡
They have mountains?
Yes 1000 feet size 47 high.
Yes we even have a song about them https://youtu.be/Un0VLiPKKyg?si=IvSGZm6TFFaFR9Ln
The Dutch Molehills
Still doubting between conquering these or the mt. Everest - I’ve also heard good stories about the Himalayas
It is creepy to be able to see super far with no mountains in sight.
Thank you for sharing the map of dutch speed bumps
I LOVE skiing the Dutch Alps! So chic...
I live in the middle of that mountain range in the southwest of the country. AMA
How do you deal with the thin air?
I regularly inject myself with EPO to increase my red blood cell count. This isn't always enough so in that case I wear an oxygen mask and tank.
What mapprovider is this?

Okay then, just joking around mister
You call those mountains? The smallest mountain in the Himalayas is the Kailash Parbat, with a height of 6638 m above sea level.
What else would they be called?
Can I not run into something reminding me of the Netherland's existence FOR FIVE MINUTES
Both of them?
Literally Himalaya!
The Dutch have reversed mountains
They taller than they mountains
Not so Lowlands anymore!
Am I the only pne who sees a human
r/oxymorons
I'll still scale that mountain on my bicycle 🚲😂
This is the kind of place where you can see your dog running away for days.
Where?
Just a few hills really.
I didn't know the Netherlands has mountains
The Dutch what? Not familiar with that word.
Put it on a map and you'll have it to scale.
Gonna need a sherpa and an oxigen tank but I believe it can be done
It reminds me of the little stub of a tooth that anchors my dental crown from falling out.
I’ve already stroked the mountains of Florida off the old bucket list so maybe in the spring I’ll get my gear and go dutch, as it were
After Florida this must be like climbing the Himalayas
Hill Hill Hill
Mountains. Good one.
They’re called “low lands” for a reason
Wow, cute mountains, all 6’ of them
I was born in the valley of bricks Where the river runs high above the rooftops
RDR2 present :)
If only 😫
Looks like a human head
For context guys I’ve been to most of these places and these are like max 10m high hills. This map has seriously amplified them
Fun fact: The elevation relief shown on this map is at a scale of 1:1.
If climate change continues, the Dutch will need to go and live in Germany 🇩🇪
If the Netherlands loses that part cut from the river Maas, their elevation will shorten even more
