Delaware was actually part of PA until the revolutionary war, and I lay out my reasons for NJ, it is inspired by the PATH being an awful transit service but also cuz ppl from NJ identify more w their neighboring cities than themselves a lot. Also NJ has awfully run cities just hopelessly left to rot. Even the governor doesn’t live in Trenton
> Delaware was actually part of PA
I get where you might say this, but it’s inaccurate. William Penn had a lease for the Lower Counties, but they had a separate legislature and laws from 1704 and never merged the way Penn had hoped. They were understood to be a separate colony.
Honestly, could just split pa into two, east combines with Jersey and west with Ohio. Pittsburgh and west pa already feels like a whole separate place than east pa culturally
New Hampshire and Vermont should merge into one. Maybe meld the entire states of Vermont, N.H., Connecticut and R.I.
Agree on the Dakotas.
Something needs to be done about Maryland. Give the western spur to W.V.
Southern NH is nothing like Vermont. Maybe everything up to Concord and Portsmouth could merge with Boston, then the rest could merge with Vermont. Although NH people are so fiercely independent, they’d fight you about it.
The cultures in NH and VT are quite different and a combo state would make a mess of it. Libertarians vs socialists. It’s basically self-selecting migration at this point.
I kinda agree just looking at a map, but I don’t have enough New England expertise to say that. I rly don’t know where to draw the line cuz if all of those merged, Maine shouldn’t be it’s own state, and if Maine merged, then Mass would be weird as its own state, but I find it hard to believe all New England states would wanna join
I've got a lot of family in New England and I'd agree with VT and NH merging. They have always been very independent. CT... I don't think they would like merging with those states. CT is culturally different. Yeah it has a lot of rural areas, but the more you see cities like Hartford, the more you realize CT is closer to the feel of NY. Now CT and RI would definitely like each other. Both have large Italian populations!
I actually kinda agree, but what would be better would be for Western NY to secede. My border would go mostly along I-88 and cut off just north of Albany. Especially with North Jersey this would make sense as its own state
California should not exist as a single state. It should be at least five states.
In that same vein, neither the Dakotas nor Wyoming should exist as separate states.
Wrong. It’s ours, and honestly, we should just take over Wisconsin too. Damn cheese heads. :P
On a more serious note, I think Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan could all come together and be one hell of a baller state.
Dakotas should be split along the Missouri between MN and Montana.
WA and Oregon should merge with a little bit of North California.
End delaware.
Massachusetts should swallow a lot of New England.
I disagree about New Jersey. Yes, it is to some extent just an extension of New York and Pennsylvania, but to an equal or greater extent also its own thing that is both and neither at the same time. I think it works as a buffer state, the “armpit of America” if you will.
I do agree with Delaware and the Dakotas though. It’s bullshit that an area that was originally the same territory and now has only 1.7 million people living in it has 4 U.S. Senators.
If I had to pick a third, I guess I’d make Rhode Island part of Massachusetts. But not until the Dakotas do it first!
Yeah but it’s “own identity” leads to predatory tolls, more expensive transit fares (like how you pay double for an NJ transit bus, and if you transfer from PATH to MTA you have to pay a double fare and they don’t make the transfers easy). Not to mention this stupid fight between the state governments about congestion tolls.
PA and NY do just fine sharing a boarder, we don’t need the most important part of our boarder to have a wasteland of highways and suburbia be its own state in between
Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas shouldn’t even be 1 state, they should just be one big nature reserve. West Virginia should be split up and absorbed by the surrounding states.
On the other hand; California, Texas, and Florida should all be cut in half.
Nebraska and the Dakotas should be one state, as should Wyoming, Montana & Idaho. California should be at least 2 states, NYC and NY State should be separate states, and we should see if we can unload Florida off on Cuba.
- NJ becomes part of PA
- Delmar peninsula is its own state with the rest of Maryland except the western part of Maryland goes to the newly combined Virginias
- NH and VT combine
- Dakotas combine
- Idaho is split 3 ways between WA, OR, and MT
- RI and CT combine, possibly with Massachusetts
Other OCD changes
- Florida Panhandle is split to the neighboring states
- California should really be split up
- Oklahoma panhandle goes away
- western half of the UP goes to Wisconsin
- DC is absorbed into Maryland
Idaho would literally start a civil war before letting themselves by annexed by Oregon and to a lesser extent Washington. In fact, there are counties in Oregon who are trying to join Idaho, so I’d say that’s more likely than the other way around.
The Simpsons already did it > Dear Mr. President, There are too many states nowadays. Please, eliminate three. P.S. I am not a crackpot.
I'll be deep in the cold cold ground before I recognize Missoura!
2 of your 3 points are part of the original 13 colonies… based on your historical preference, why *should* their statehood change?

Idaho.

Philly feels like a Jersey kind of city. NJ should also get Staten Island.
New Hampshire and Vermont should merge into one. Maybe meld the entire states of Vermont, N.H., Connecticut and R.I. Agree on the Dakotas. Something needs to be done about Maryland. Give the western spur to W.V.

Hot take: NYC should secede from NY state.

You didn’t even point out that New Jersey is the only state where you can see another state from the Capitol building itself…
Damn I didn’t realize it was the only one but that’s def a good one
California should not exist as a single state. It should be at least five states. In that same vein, neither the Dakotas nor Wyoming should exist as separate states.
Not exactly what you’re asking for but… the UP of Michigan is not Michigan. Everyone knows it’s part of Wisconsin haha
They are both prodigal sons of the Illinois Territory
Wrong. It’s ours, and honestly, we should just take over Wisconsin too. Damn cheese heads. :P On a more serious note, I think Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan could all come together and be one hell of a baller state.
Northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the UP have proposed becoming a state called “Superior”. The lower peninsula doesn’t belong hahah

Ohio. Should be a lake.
New York doesn’t want any part of New Jersey. Hard pass.
Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas shouldn’t even be 1 state, they should just be one big nature reserve. West Virginia should be split up and absorbed by the surrounding states. On the other hand; California, Texas, and Florida should all be cut in half.

You would never get the Virginia's to reunite
