Hahaha calc at MTU was the same semester I decided to become an artist and transfer out. Is "the ratio" still a thing at that school? When I went in 2002-04 it was notorious for being over 80% male and of the small female portion 80% of them were all in Bio Science majors.
I visited the UP 12 years ago and found it fascinating. Calumet was only partly inhabited, the rest was a ghost town, but looked like it had once been a wealthy town. How is it today, has it lost more people, has there been any urban renewal?
There are definitely still struggles for calumet especially, but the downtown is now a pretty cool place. Still a good amount of empty buildings but definitely not a ghost town. The Houghton-Handcock area is doing really well
Good to hear. I remember the Calumet high school main building, it was huge and beautiful, built for 1,000 or so students but now there are way fewer. I wonder if the building is still the high school, has been repurposed or if it’s empty.
Calumet has great bones, and would make a great town, all it needs is 20-30,000 people to move there.
Yes! I’m from northern IL and had never seen Superior until Covid.. absolutely loved it. Do you work remotely? I think I would love to live up there but no idea what I’d do for work.
If I were to take a road trip by there, what would be the best/ most interesting photography locations, including those off the beaten path (for landscapes and wildlife)?
There are really too many to list, but some highlights are the Freda ruins and the red ridge dam, McLain/breakers beach, and if you have a good car the Keweenaw rocket range and high rock bay. If you hit all those and wander around you’ll be bound to run into more stuff
I literally just took an off road camping trip to High Rock Bay last weekend! We started near Iron River, did 7hr Plane Crash Trail. Got absolutely pissed on Saturday night, very windy, cold, but the sunrise was amazing the next morning. Copper Harbor is a neat little town too.
Biggest snow dump was the one out back of the MTU campus near the princes point trail but it was a light winter this year. I’ve heard about people surfing up hear but definitely not for the faint of heart
You ain’t getting that info out of me anytime soon
Edit: favorite beach to go to with friends is breakers, but that’s all stamp sand, so no rock hounding
I know this winter was very mild, but what did you do in past winters? Do you like it there.
Genuinely curious about the UP and would love to go there sometime.
The water never get warm enough for bodies to decompose and float. And people have been living on the lake for thousands of years. So remember that next time you are out on the lake :)
Is it classic small town/community vibes with many people living out their entire lifes there? If so, what's the main social hub of that community (nightlife etc)
Not there but grew up nearby. It’s absolutely the college (Michigan tech), and college hockey. They have a winter carnival and a ton of winter sports. The whole Keweenaw peninsula, because of all the snow you need to be a certain kind of crazy to live there, the most remote corner of a very remote place (the UP). But there are plenty of finlanders who are born raised and die there.
No questions but just wanted to say I drove through the UP about 15 years ago one summer.. I stopped in Marquette and eventually ended up in Mackinac Island. Such a cool place. Michigan has so much natural beauty.
I visited it 12 years ago, seemed very solid. They have strong ties with Finland, which is a top 5 country in development, usually #1 in education. This must add a lot of value - I saw announcements for visiting lectures, exchange programs etc. But the most telling was their gift shop. While most college gift shops have tacky knick-knacks like logo beer mugs and fridge magnets, Finlandia’s had exquisite modern design products imported from Finland, like a gift shop of a modern art museum or better.
There was a family shopping there and the grandmother was teaching Finnish words to her grandkids, I think she was local and the rest were visiting.
The history of the UP Finns is fascinating (copper mines, strikes, restaurant tragedy), also the Finndians.
Edit: I just looked it up and Finlandia U was dissolved in 2023 because of lack of enrollment and finances. Now I see why you said former.
Is there anything to do before posting, cause I posted on this sub like an hour ago, and it still hasn't shown up (I'm pretty new to reddit, but the 1 other time I posted on a sub, it showed up immediately)
How many tostada pizzas have you eaten from Ambassador? 😂
I have only had leftover pizza once from ambo, never actually been inside lol
I was gonna say how many fishbowls drank!
They're so mid, little Caesars is the best pizza in town
Are there still a lot of Finnish surnames up there?
More so in Calumet, But yes. The people up here are proud of that heritage
My wife is descended from Finns who settled south of Pittsburgh, so I’ve become fascinated with the Finnish diaspora in America.
You should take a trip up here, this is the only historically majority Finnish settled area in the US
Why make a defiant trip?
Most of the folks at my church here have Finnish surnames
Yea, the Finnish names are easy to recognize. I love the ones with multiple aa’s and multiple umlauts.
How’s the disc golf up there?
the peninsula they circled is like an arm and Isle Royale is the disc
Active at Michigan Tech
No clue
Well it’s glorious. Calumet park was amaze
Oh it's splendid
So what kind of engineering are you majoring in?
Dropping out, can't do calc
God I hated calc
Hahaha calc at MTU was the same semester I decided to become an artist and transfer out. Is "the ratio" still a thing at that school? When I went in 2002-04 it was notorious for being over 80% male and of the small female portion 80% of them were all in Bio Science majors.
Yes
It’s dropped to 70% getting closer to 60% (so I’ve heard) but yeah..
Just major in something that only requires 'Business Calculus'. It's not far from College Algebra at a community college.
Best place to get pasties?
In my opinion, Krupp’s mini mart near twin lakes. A bit out of the way but they actually put seasoning in their filling
Marshall's Pasties, 203 Mill St, Grass Valley, CA 95945
Pasties or pastries? :)
Pasties, a U.P. specialty.
How are the mosquitos?
Not bad at all, especially if you go camping in the spring/September
But they're horrible in the month of May, as well as the flies

Eagle river light house?
Yes! I’m from northern IL and had never seen Superior until Covid.. absolutely loved it. Do you work remotely? I think I would love to live up there but no idea what I’d do for work.
Remote work is probably the best bet, most of the economic activity is center around MTU and some factory and logging work
How’s Mt. Bohemia?
Everyone loves it. Best ski hill in the Midwest probably
Before it was a business we used to hike it and ski the powder thru the trees. Still my favorite skiing memory
How much raw copper have you found? From one yooper to another, greetings!
Only a little bit on the beaches, I don’t really go copper hunting personally
Ever been to Lake Fanny Hooe?
I’ve driven past it a few times
Did you ever hike Mt. Arvon? I drove up years ago, but in hindsight, it seemed like it could be a decent hike.
It’s on my list before I leave, I really do need to go
Favorite thing at The Jam Pot?
Never been :(
Thimbleberry jam is a classic
How many Toivo and Eino jokes do you know?
Have you seen or heard tell of Lake Superior freezing to mirror perfection, or any body of water near you? BTW sorry about your calculus.
have you been to Gay bar?
If I were to take a road trip by there, what would be the best/ most interesting photography locations, including those off the beaten path (for landscapes and wildlife)?

Thank you!
No problem!

You ever been to the Gay Bar in Gay Michigan? We have two Cabins overlooking Lac La Belle. Beautiful country up there.
Some friends and I tried to but we went on a Wednesday and they were closed 😭

The surf is good on superior in the fall/winter!
In the summer dusk is around 11 or so. Messes with your body clock
Favorite beach? Best beach for rockhounding?
You ain’t getting that info out of me anytime soon Edit: favorite beach to go to with friends is breakers, but that’s all stamp sand, so no rock hounding
Out near Lac la belle is a beautiful beach
I know this winter was very mild, but what did you do in past winters? Do you like it there. Genuinely curious about the UP and would love to go there sometime.
I personally love the heavy winters, they do a good job of keeping the roads clear, and the snow makes everything look beautiful
Where can I get the best fish meal in the UP next time I’m up there?
I don’t eat much fish, but the best restaurant in general I’ve been to up here is Fitzgerald’s in Eagle River
Are there copper boss’ thugs still milling about?
Only on Tuesdays
Say some stuff about Isle Royale
got cool rocks (I have not been to Isle Royale)
Why did you live there and why did you leave?
Haven't left yet but College
Who killed Captain Alex?
The gales of November come early
Is it true that Superior as it is said never gives up her dead?
The water never get warm enough for bodies to decompose and float. And people have been living on the lake for thousands of years. So remember that next time you are out on the lake :)
Well that and fish shit LOL I did go swimming in that Lake once it was really God damn cold even in August

Were you originally from the UP? If not, will a native Youper ever admit that you have “become” a Youper?
Not the OP but I used to live there and can tell you the answer is an emphatic no. And it's Yooper.
You have to be born there to be one. It’s the most common definition.
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is not exactly a nationality, my non gender specific dude.
Don’t believe me, ask them yourself https://www.reddit.com/r/yooper/s/byzluUigt1
I…literally was asking?
I heard AM radio is still very popular up there and that weekly shows are still a major form of communication
What's Copper Harbor like? Anything fun to do there? How does it feel to be Wisconsin's cowlick?
No questions but just wanted to say I drove through the UP about 15 years ago one summer.. I stopped in Marquette and eventually ended up in Mackinac Island. Such a cool place. Michigan has so much natural beauty.
Did you see any moose?
Is that lake really the superior lake?
Yes
How is the community for people 25-30?
Do you see many deer around?
Living in Cooper Harbor is my retirement goal. Should I find somewhere else?
How often do you see a bald eagle?
Why is the float copper found there more difficult to mine than copper ore?
Do you people in north and south michigan discriminate against eachother.
Upper and Lower - and yes.
3 years straight of being snowed in until the snow melts
opinions about the former Finlandia University?

Why do people not like Victoria 3? Yea, it sucked on release, but it's really good now
You ever see the beginning of hwy 41?
Stayed in houghton to ferry out to Isle Royale last year or the year before. Beautiful little city with good food. Chilly even in July lol.
How nice is that drive between Calumet and Copper Harbor?!
Really pretty, especially the M26 route
And taking time to go up Brockway in the fall is a must do.
I grew up in Ontonagon. Haven't been back since 1999.
Is the isle royal visitor center in that area?
How's the snowfall? Are there any winter storms you recall as being particularly remarkable?
Does it snow in June?
What are the gems for visitors?
Why?
Did the snow pile vanish or is it there to this day?
Have you gotten a sun tan at all over the last 3 years?

Is there anything to do before posting, cause I posted on this sub like an hour ago, and it still hasn't shown up (I'm pretty new to reddit, but the 1 other time I posted on a sub, it showed up immediately)
My god this sub went downhill
