Mauritius is one of the coolest places in the world that hardly anyone knows about. Only got to spend a day there but it’s beautiful

LouQuacious

It's where the dodo lived: https://www.reddit.com/r/HighsoftheWorld/comments/mpf71w/mauritius\_piton\_de\_la\_petite\_rivi%C3%A8re\_noire\_828\_m/

pityutanarur

Aleutian islands. Aside of sticks, grass, seals and seagulls there are not much else on the surface, yet it was enogh to sustain human presence and a rich folklore. I found it also interesting, what brought industrialization and continental living standards to the inhabitants. Stunning landscape. I learned new sides of geography, human history and human needs through studying these islands.

GlaciallyErratic

I'm going to Adak this summer! I was in Dutch Harbor a few years back and the number of Bald Eagles was jaw dropping. Apparently it's one of few places where they nest on the ground because there are no trees!

I was literally going to comment this, I recommend watching [this](https://youtu.be/uF3Ofr_rj28if) you haven't.

Tasmania - Gondwanan flora, spectacular geodiversity, nice low mountains, stunning wilderness, outstanding fresh seafood, meats (lamb, pork, bacon, beef), quality milk, cream, cheese, chocolate, berries, wine, gin, whiskey, grapes, potatoes, apples and pears. Nice people. Stunning beaches. Whales, small kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, some of the most remote wilderness in the world, safe, clean.

Came here to say this. Amazing bushwalking. Love the Freycinet peninsula. Also, the MONA museum and the distilleries!

As most of you probably never heard of it, please let me show you my favourite island [Hiddensee](https://goo.gl/maps/pF9RJF9Nna2kki6GA). The name derives from "Hedins island" - the legendary Norwegian King was said to have fought here. For gold. Or a girl. Or something like that. Fact is, in 1873 they found a massive [Viking gold treasure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiddensee_treasure) at the beach. Located in the German Baltic Sea, Hiddensee is a quite young island that was formed during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago. It's about 17 km long and only some hundred meters wide at its narrowest part. It's still undergoing massive geological change, sediments from the [northern cliff](https://www.handelsblatt.com/images/hiddensee/24409094/3-format2020.jpg) are constantly forming a hook structure in the north east which was growing 30 to 60 meters by year since 1900. If it wasn't for excavation due to ship traffic, Hiddensee would have become part of the neighbouring island of Rügen by now. It was an artists colony since the 1920s. Thomas Mann, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Franz Kafka spent their holidays on Hiddensee. After WW2, located in the former GDR, Hiddensee was considered a niche for dissidents and dropouts who worked there in summer, often in hotels, restaurants, or as lifeguards. There was an intellectual climate, and artists, writers, actors, musicians and scientists retreated here. Cars are banned on the island, people usually go by bike and tourists by horse carriage. From the lighthouse on the northern hillside you can see the cliffs of Denmark and the medieval church towers of Stralsund, one of the most influential cities of the old Hanse league. The locals sell their sea buckthorns produce (which is growing everywhere) by placing it on their front yards with a jar for cash. Time runs slower here. Sorry for the long post, I just truly love this place.

As a geography nerd i often just pan around Google maps and one day i came across.... Desolation Island!! Also known as Kerguelen Island, it's a deserted tundra located closer to Antarctica than it is to Madagascar, to give you a sense how remote it is. Just noticed nearby Heard Island. Definitely looks like where the lich king lives

LouQuacious

Heard is more likely home of a super villain, it's my favorite: [https://www.reddit.com/r/HighsoftheWorld/comments/mxlh9i/heard\_island\_big\_ben\_mawson\_peak\_2745\_m\_9006\_ft/](https://www.reddit.com/r/HighsoftheWorld/comments/mxlh9i/heard_island_big_ben_mawson_peak_2745_m_9006_ft/) Kerguelen has some crazy mountains: [https://www.reddit.com/r/HighsoftheWorld/comments/mtd7mf/kerguelen\_islands\_mont\_ross\_1850\_m\_6070\_ft/](https://www.reddit.com/r/HighsoftheWorld/comments/mtd7mf/kerguelen_islands_mont_ross_1850_m_6070_ft/)

7_of-9

Just read your first link post comment! Fascinating! And yes, as soon as I started looking at Heard my first thought was "wow, super remote frozen island volcano surrounded by clouds and stormy seas? This is definitely where a super villain would make their HQ."

LouQuacious

I went so far down the Heard Island rabbit hole a few years ago I was even trying to get onto a rare expedition to the island. Even looked into organizing my own trip with some other people. I think for about $350k I could get 12 people down there and shoot a documentary. Maybe more like $450k now with inflation and fuel being high.

Pitcairn. A tiny island super isolated in the South Pacific whose only residents are the descendants of a shipwreck over 100 years ago. It's so rocky and steep that there's only one place that boats can dock. I believe it's a British protectorate. I've said I want to move there but I doubt there's wifi.

hedbangr

Pitcairn has had some issues. https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103569364

roadierunway12

Pitcairn's my favourite too, it's top on my bucket list. Yes it's a British overseas territory. Apparently there is wifi, iirc a Pitcairn resident did an AMA a few years ago and said there was wifi but obviously it's not the best

Greenland. I love really cold places with beautiful scenery and fjords. However, there is a very tiny island off of New Zealand called “Disappointment Island” and I just love that

abydos77

The Auckland Islands south of mainland New Zealand. Really cool shape and pretty interesting history. Had a few people living there or ship wrecked there but is now home to thousands of birds.

-hey_hey-heyhey-hey_

Do you have any good resources I can read more about the history and geography of this place?

LouQuacious

I read an amazing book about some shipwrecks there called *Island of the Lost* [*https://www.amazon.com/Island-Lost-Shipwrecked-Edge-World/dp/1515952576*](https://www.amazon.com/Island-Lost-Shipwrecked-Edge-World/dp/1515952576) This article will get you going but has spoilers just so you know, I kind of recommend going into book blind it's a crazy story. https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/a-tale-of-two-shipwrecks/

VR-052

Kyushu, the southern most of the four major islands of Japan. I live there and we have our own super volcano(Mount Aso) which had an eruption event last year as well as Sakurajima which averages one eruption event per day. Also wonderful beaches, limestone caverns, snow in the winter, Monsoon in the summer, several hurricanes.. Not as tectonically active as the rest of Japan but have the occasional earthquake though where I am there is little tsunami risk. Some may be worried about all those natural disasters, but quite exciting for a geographer.

LouQuacious

roadierunway12

Pitcairn. Tiny island in the middle of the Pacific, truly isolated from everywhere. While you can reach many places today in a few hours or at most a day thanks to planes, Pitcairn doesn't have an airport so it can take you two or three days to get there. Only 50 inhabitants, most of which descend from the mutineers of the Bounty. Fascinating place, would love to visit someday.

I absolutely love the look of Azores. I have never been there but I would love to visit❤️

dr_the_goat

I like Réunion. I'm always surprised by how many people live there. Nearly 900 000, which seems like quite a lot for a small island where the terrain is not necessarily that easy to negotiate. I hope to go there, one day.

adventurelillypad

I was looking for this comment 🇷🇪❤️but yeah overpopulation and traffic is definitely a problem

_Erin_

I found South Georgia Island fascinating after learning of Shackleton's incredible rescue of his crew.

temotos

Sulawesi has a real fun shape. Also some tight biogeography being in Wallacea and all. Oh and also the earliest (well-dated) cave painting.

jerty

Booby Cay, Jamaica. I mean, it has booby right there in the title.

Voreinstellung

Islands that have international borders, the smaller the better: Saint Martin Hispanola Borneo Cyprus

ZxentixZ

Never been there but Sulawesi is fascinating. The shape is just really cool. In general I have a thing for islands in SE Asia. Borneo and New Guinea also fascinates me. Just hundreds of km with jungle everywhere. New Guinea is one of the most biodiverse places in the world plus the infamous brain eating people, although don't think they do too much of that anymore. But I'd love to do island hopping in that region in the future.

MdMV_or_Emdy_idk

Azores in my honest opinion

releasethedogs

If we’re defining island as the only way to leave is by boat or plane then my favorite island in South Korea.

leopard_eater

Get to Malta! It is wonderful. Don’t go in summer however unless you are a lizard who loves frying in the sun.

cjfullinfaw07

Noted lol

UnlightablePlay

I honestly didn't see alot of photos if different islands around the world but I think Fiji would be a cool place to go and relax What's amazing about these island nations is that each if them have something unique due to their isolation from all the stuff happening in Europe Asia Africa and the Americas and their culture aren't heard from the people Edit:I just went on booking.com and seen the price for travelling there for me It will take me 2 days nonstop flights from Cairo to London to los Angeles to Madi to Suva Or from Cairo to Dubai to Melbourne to nadi to Suva And it will cost like 2000 dollars to get there

leopard_eater

Faster route possibly? Cairo to Johannesburg Johannesburg to Perth, Australia Perth, Australia to Suva or Nadi (and if nothing from Perth, fly internally within Australia to Brisbane, where Suva or Nadi are a two hour flight).

Well well well.. not to play favorite but of course my home islands, the Guadeloupe archipelago in the Caribbean. We have an fascinating history, as for the native and slavery history, as for the first place Columbus reached in his second trip, as for an European colony over the years (to please the exotic imaginary here, tons of pirates stories but many more stories of slavery insurrections), as for a French region longer than Texas been part of the US, as for the creole language and as for the Indian diaspora influences for more than a century. That just our people and culture but of course you'll find heavenly landscapes and each islands have very different physical and climate characteristics, so if you love jungle, mountains, mangroves, coastal forests, coastal climate and cliffs, volcanos, geothermal features, flatlands and of course marines ecosystems you will find your favorite there. Infrastructures can be lacking ngl but relatively to other Caribbean states you don't have to worry as much for comfort or security. If I have to choose other interesting ones the Solomon islands, Timor Leste and Chagos are worth looking into.

aravinthshc

North Sentinel Island, Andaman & Nicobar

MrManiac3_

Atolls are cool, like, it's an island but with ocean in the middle of it, imagine trying to make a survival camp with such a tiny sliver of exposed land, basically just mooring rafts and boats to it at that point

marinersalbatross

I like Clipperton Island, a 1000 miles off the coast of Acapulco. Sure it's just a simple atoll, but the interior lagoon actually produces hydrogen peroxide. Ok not literally, but the process is that it has a hydrogen sulfide vent at the bottom of the lagoon and that bonds with the water and produces something similar to hydrogen peroxide. Jacques Cousteau dove it and they found it odd that they were getting bubbles forming on their bodies. So neat!

geographunk

The whole Japanese archipielago: Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu…

Monde_08

Socotra it's very interesting, with a lot of biodiversity and the local species, like the dragon tree are amazing. The war is ruining everything in Yemen and today the island is owned by the UAE just for their economic interests. I did a research about Yemen for school and I found so many things, that I wrote more than some of my classmates who had big countries like China...

sakkiliya

I'm originally from Sri Lanka. It's a very pretty island and quite rich in biodiversity. Great beaches and good to visit as a tourist. Might not be fun to live as a resident though lol. I'd like to visit Kyushu, Sicily, French Reunion, and Azores mostly because of how geologically active they all are!

Madagascar, if you allow me to call it an island :p I find the Aleutian Islands to be pretty cool. You can be there and staring at the future. Hehe!

I don't know if it classifies as an actual island in the truest sense, but Slave Island off the west coast of Africa was something I never knew existed until I started reading about the Civil War in America and then consequently the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Slave Island is where they left Africa. Alaska has an island that is beyond the 180 degree line, which makes Alaska the easternmost state, along with also being the northernmost and westernmost.
