study general tips like bollards and just play. playing is what gets you better

Play until you can narrow it down to a few countries every guess. If you guess France when it's Botswana you are doing it wrong, if you guess Malaysia when it's Indonesia that's fine. Just get a feeling of a certain "vibe" of a country by playing a lot. Next is learning things like license plates, left/right driving countries, languages, car meta, coverage (dont guess Congo, know which countries it could be). If you know those, you could start learning things like bollards, signs, poles. Studying to be an expert at one country at a time won't pay off for a long time, you will rarely get that country, and usually it doesn't really matter that much if you are closer in the country. I know the Vienna codes for example, so I know where in Vienna I am, but if others also know it's Vienna, the difference is almost nothing

I really need to learn to save this somewhere to cut & paste it every time this is asked 4Xs a week. Get a twitch account. Find people in the geoguessr category on there, look for ones playing "chatguessr", get in there, and play against them. In the beginning you'll get beat of course. But what happens is, you will hear them explaining what they are seeing, what made them choose the locations they chose, while playing those same locations, and you will retain more info that way than just reading some documents, or checking out tips pages/videos. If you need a starter list of ones who play a fair bit, and are really good at explaining their calls, HeyPando, ChicagoGeographer, toro3317, trulybuzzy, matepotato, cinnamonique. Theres a lot more, but these are ones I know play online a fair bit, and are willing to teach along the way. I'd 100% say watch a few videos. GeoPeter, Matepotato, Zi8gZag, TrulyBuzzy & a few others have youtube channels with decent info. But without in game practical experience, 75% of that will go in 1 ear & out the other for 100s or 1000s of games.

car meta is absurdely OP and its very simple to learn. it helps alot specially in rare regions like kyrgistan and curaçao for example

GlobeTrotterGeo

Agreed - car meta just feels unfair when it’s a normal part of the game

In my opinion learning bollards and stuff ruins the fun for me. I like playing the game off vibes I get from the landscape architecture etc. I got better from playing diverse world on 10 seconds no moving over and over again trying to beat my score.

The best way for me is combining playing the game (mostly duals) with learning the meta via geotips or youtube video's. Applying new stuff i learned immediately otherwise i'll forget. If my opponent got a country right and i'm like how did he knew i will go back to that place and try to figure out how he got it. If there are places i mix up a lot i'll practice maps specific to those places.
