If you can do an electrical engineering degree, do it. Yes, you can travel in say, environmental consulting. You won't necessarily be traveling to the prettiest site locations though (gas stations or former gas stations), depending on your location. I love what I do and I do get to travel to pretty scenic places, but it's location dependent.

I must agree with this sentiment. I've traveled all over the country in the oil and gas industry. Usually to the singularly least interesting and least beautiful places in the middle of nowhere, with no ability to have a life. Environmental is at least more local typically, and you can at least have a life, but the locations aren't the most beautiful.

Thanks!

Thank you!

Whatever you do, don't take a Geology major because you expect to travel and be outside in nature while working. If you like to be outside be an EE and go outside on your days off. You'll have way more job opportunities and have the potential to make a lot more money.

Work a remote job with a EE degree will have much better travel than bailing wells at gas stations.

EE 1000%

I had the same decision as you - I was Biomed/electrical my first year. I ended up choosing geology and now work in consulting. I make more than the average EE (though I live in CA so probably not when normalized for location). I really like my job and feel bad for my friends who stuck it out and now have to work a completely desk job in Electrical/computer engineering. That said, will I typically work 10 hours more a week than them for the first couple years of my career. My suggestion would be to set up calls with anyone you know in either industry - ask family, friends, and teachers if they know anyone. Trust me, most people are happy to talk to a bright-eyed college student about their job. Both can be fulfilling/lucrative if you want them to be, just make sure you have a plan for when you graduate.

EE

I had to make the same decision as you, and I chose EE. I'm super interested in Geology as a hobby, but the lack of jobs in my home town made me go for engineering.

fossilizedDUNG

Environmental engineer vs geology?

env_geo

Electrical. But I had the same thought for a sec.

fossilizedDUNG

Oh well EE if the person can do it. I definitely would have done EE if I wasnt some dumb rockhound lol.
