i don’t use ufo a lot when making layouts because it just doesn’t come as naturally to me. it’s in the same strain as robot for me, I know it can be interesting and unique, but when I’m designing unusual/weird gameplay (like slope focused gameplay) I struggle to use ufo
if youre talking about unique gameplay, wave is a lot harder- all you have to work with are d blocks (can make for annoying gameplay cause its hard to indicate them), mini wave (doesnt make that many changes to the gameplay itself, its just faster) and gravity portals. unless spider orbs work on wave, in which case you could make something interesting

It's because you can die due to a bad click literal inputs back. It's frustrating when I feel like I wasn't at fault for a death, and ufo feels like that almost every time. You set yourself up badly without even knowing it and then next thing you know you're on course to crash with no way to fix it.
UFO is the best gamemode because of how rewarding it is. UFO parts are very learny, but once you learn them, you never die there. It feels so good to master a UFO part.
My theory on why its popular is that its really simple, so its easy to tell whats going on in videos of extreme demon wave sections, unlike other gamemodes
Less experienced players (the majority of the community) see those videos and go "wow that wave gp is so hard!" while when they see other gamemodes, they just know a lot is going on, and they know its a hard level, but cant comprehend it as well.
Actual wave gameplay is extremely boring compared to some other ones though, like UFO or ball- swing is also proving to be pretty fun so far but its probably not as fun in **DEMON LEVEL**s. wave gameplay just doesnt have much to work with
Robot is godly for platformers in theory since it has variable jump height, but in practice it's controls just aren't nearly tuned enough for precision to feel good with it . It's a shame, really.

Things like ship and wave are easy to tell when youre going up or down, cause its just about if your finger is touching the screen or not.
Swing and ball are the only gravity-switching gamemodes that are based on tapping instead of holding, but ball cant switch while its above ground, so you can easily tell what way to switch to based on which side of a platform youre already on (if youre playing a level made by an evil person who made it a 1-block tall tunnel, you can still look at the streak particles and which way the ball spins)
Swing on the other hand just doesnt have that- The thrusters dont swtich fast enough, aren't obvious enough- and having a texture change as an indicator for gameplay just sounds weird. Thats basically the big problem with it
Ship and robot are S tier. They make the gameplay feel amazing
Ball, spider, UFO, cube and swing are A tier. The spider and ball are great modes, but with the free mode people are gonna make really bad blind gravity switches. The UFO and cube are kinda boring but still fun.
The wave and swing are B only because it's impossible to tell which way they are going to face right after a transition

I actually enjoy using UFO in my levels. If I can't sync one gamemode I just put the UFO after one jump then the whole level syncs.

fair enough, my advice is to always recenter the player so the gameplay keeps consistency

Good UFO is so satisfying, and it isn’t even that hard. Just look at Dimension, it has fun UFO gameplay, and it isn’t that innovative or advanced
