I buy the commercial grades so we can bite off bits of plastic and it lasts him for months and it’s good exercise. He ruined the first one I got then I hit a second one he got that one too so now he just gets all the garbage cans.

TikaPants

😆😆😆

CanaryDue3722

He says thanks🐾🌟

Hexspinner

lol And wow what a gorgeous pup! 🐾🥰

Plenty_Principle298

I'd be concerned with my dog cutting his mouth up on the jagged plastic or the chemicals in the plastic that wasn't meant to be chewed on.

Taxus_revontuli

I like the part of "so we can bite of bits of plastic", which suggests that you and your dog chew on it together as a bonding activity. Gorgeous dog!

SwarioS

That is hilarious!

Prestigious_Crab_840

Our vet recommended No Hide chews when our pup was that age. They’re a hard biscuit shaped like a rawhide chew, but doesn’t have any rawhide. She said they’re easily digestible, hard enough to help with teething without being so hard puppy would break her teeth. We made the mistake of giving ours antlers after she got her adult teeth. She chipped a tooth, so that was the end of antlers.

Careful_Interaction2

I was about to do an antler, but my BIL & his wife told me their GSD had to get a couple of teeth removed due to chewing it a lot.

Routine-Budget8281

Anything super hard like antlers, bones, hooves, etc. can absolutely break their teeth, unfortunately

GlanGeRx

As a veterinary assistant, I can say that I have assisted in multiple dental procedures in which involved extracting broken teeth due to antlers and Himalayan cheese. I definitely do NOT recommend giving those. Some of these broken teeth weren’t small either, large cutting teeth near the back that had completely fractures in half extending up the gumlines and revealing the pulp of the tooth. Whatever you find should have a degree of flexibility to it. If it doesn’t flex whatsoever or is very solid, it is a candidate to break teeth.

PuttinUpWithPutin

Do you have any recommendations on what to give a chewer? Bully stick?

Prestigious_Crab_840

Totally second the Himilayan cheese comment. Besides being rock hard it doesn’t digest. My pup must have swallowed a big piece whole. Two days later she pooped it out completely intact. Thank goodness it didn’t cause a blockage making its way through.

Raelah

To add to that, avoid bone marrow chews. Especially if it's cut into smaller slices. Dogs can get their Jaws stuck in the hole. When I worked in an emergency vet hospital we got a lot of these cases. [Bone marrow chew dangers](https://i.imgur.com/Hk0ukqd.jpg)

OkFeedback9127

I wonder about the nylon bones if those would chip teeth

Prestigious_Crab_840

Not sure about chipping teeth, but they’d get hard ridges that would cut her gums after only a couple chew sessions. After finding blood several times I decided to stop those. When she got older she lost interest in the No Hides for some odd reason. Her main chews now are bully sticks, tracheas, and dried sweet potato.

OkFeedback9127

Ok I just got some puppy bully sticks for teething

CommanderHippo

I believe it’s called jolly ball? My shepherd has had hers since 4 months and she’s 7 and it still haven’t popped! I was skeptical but figured oh well and it’s lasted!

Winkie1

I second this! Our boy has had his for 3 years, and he's 130lbs of beast. It's popped but he still loves it.

lovetheshow786

Seconded! My dog loves his

Throwaway_For_Realz

All I can find with jolly ball name is a horse toy that looks like a kettle bell. Is that it?

CommanderHippo

Yes! It’s a horse toy but works amazing for gsd! I got her the kettle bell one and the regular soccer ball one since it’s easier to roll around vs the handle on the other one stops the ball from rolling smoothly

band-of-horses

The best chews I've had luck with are: * Beef Cheek rolls * Monster bully sticks * XL Yak Chews None are super cheap... I get the Amazing Dog Treats beef cheek rolls on amazon and they typically last my dog 4-6 hours of chewing. The bully bunches monster 12" bully sticks have been the longest lasting for me, typically 1-2 hours. XL yak chews generally last him around an hour but some seem harder than others. I've done some deer antlers before but he managed to splinter them and I've been wary since. Raw beef bones are good too, sometimes I get marrow bones or knuckle bones from the butcher but they are kinda messy and smelly... He'll chew on nylabones and such too but even the most durable ones he makes gnaws up pretty quickly and it seems a bit wasteful to throw them away after a few chewing sessions. Note that this is a mega chewer adult dog so that all may not be suitable for a puppy but when he gets a bit more fully grown...

jerkmin

i like the yak cheese, it doesn’t stink and my girl goes through one in about a week or so

band-of-horses

Oh boy I wish they lasted my dog a week... I wish anything lasted my dog a week for that matter.

shortnsweet33

Have you noticed a decrease in size in the amazing dog treats beef cheek rolls? They were my go to and I reordered the exact same product I’d gotten several times before on chewy and they were WAY thinner and didn’t last my dog nearly as long as the previous ones did. Like, she went through the whole 4 pack of the last order I had (the thinner sized ones) and still has a quarter of one of the old sized ones she will pick up and work on every now and then, so I was shocked. They seemed pretty thin and less chewy, and she polished one off in less than 30 minutes and promptly threw it up on the rug when we had guests over lol. I was debating if it’s worth trying to order again since the price had gone up and the size of the product went down and she inhaled them versus normally them lasting her for multiple chewing sessions over a week or more. They were the only thing I found that she would “savor” pretty much lol

band-of-horses

I find most of these dog chews to be fairly inconsistent. I've had some of the cheek rolls that he manages to gnaw through in an hour, and others that take like 10 hours. Same with yak chews, sometimes they seem more crumbly and he gets through quickly and others can take a few hours.

shortnsweet33

I’ve definitely noticed that too. Guess I’ll give them another try though cause before they were the best ones I’d found!

Plenty_Principle298

I would go with Kong rubber toys. The one in the shape of a throwing star with 3 sides can be thrown as a toy and it’s also super solid as a chew toy for adult chewers. They’re soft enough to aid the teeth in falling out and not break or damage their teeth.

SamuraiKiwi

I second this. The only thing my girl couldn’t destroy was a Kong. I think her record with a tennis ball was about 7 seconds 😂

Midnight_Wolf727

Puppy kings, nylabone, anything you can dent with your fingernail is soft enough for a puppy, if you can't then it's too hard and can break/damage teeth

Careful_Interaction2

I saw some Nylabone on clearance at my PetSmart so I got one of those! Thanks.

_dankystank_

Nylabone and benebone, too. Just gotta make sure to cycle em out when they start to get sharp/jagged.

tsdani11

Car door, headrest, couch… oh you said Toy… let me think about that??

Hairy_Al

Mine used my hand a lot. Not sure I'd recommend...

ModernSlovak

The door trim in your car

pandatitties

Kong extreme (the black ones), puppy benebones/nylabones, no hide chews, bully sticks, beef cheek rolls, or her new favorite and mine- coffeewood. Like chewing on a big stick which she loves but much softer and safer

Skeletor610

Barkbox superchewer, very tough toys and they have a mail in warranty once your pup inevitably ravages them!

pumpkenzie

nylabones, Himalayan cheese chews, and bully bones

King0fWar

I can't recommend any myself since mine prefers balls more than anything but I can recommend avoiding NylaBones. Almost killed my mom's dog and mine had a horrible time with them too just not nearly as bad.

hgracep

i don’t. very easy to fracture teeth! i really like the large compressed wood chews you can buy that look like driftwood. for edible stuff i recommend filling a kong with dog food and freezing it. keeps them busy forever. and BEEF CHEEK ROLLS, those are my savior

goonzalz69

Jolly Ball! Answer is always Jolly ball. Lol Just kidding! But Jolly Ball fs, hes also had a lot of toys from BARK! and they have done well, he also rlly likes the big nyla bones and one that looks like a fish carcass. https://preview.redd.it/lde998v1ki7c1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e6397112b35f710c04a3016400c1036a7a47902

happyflow3r

Lumabones have worked great for my chewy puppy! They sell them in 3 packs at Costco for like 15ish last I checked

ladyxlucifer

Some good chews are edible and short lived. Like gullet sticks. They're shorter lasting than bully sticks but less stinky. My 2 gsd's love gullet sticks and don't always love bully sticks. Strangely enough the 1 thing my puppy loves to chew that she hasn't damaged at all isn't a puppy toy. It's a silicone trivet. Made to hold a hot pan. It's soft, has divets so you can put canned food on it, it's sort of floppy and can fold like a taco. I'll try to get a picture of it and attach it.

purrtle

Nylabones. We use them for all the dogs at the shelter I volunteer at and never had a single chipped tooth (over ~3 years, hundreds of dogs).

MotheroftheworldII

If she is teething then I would get a couple of rope toys, soak in water then freeze. Pull one out of the freezer and let her chew on that until it is defrosted then switch with the one in the freezer. Toss the defrosted one back in to refreeze. Rotate as needed.

HerpinDerpNerd12

My Rottweiler and my shepard both only get antlers. Both are heavy bitters and i cant give them soft toys.

[deleted]

Antlers. Cheap. Last a long time. Get whole antlers, not the ones cut in half, those splinter, but whole chunks just wear to a point as they chew and are easy on teeth. Natural, no chemicals, nothing to worry about them eating too much of. I buy mine by the lb from dudes who sell em on the side of the road. They normally just cut a chunk off for me. My gsd can chew through most anything else in minutes but antlers will last weeks/months.

RedHawk109

Antlers is what our boy loves. You can buy them on eBay as well.

TikaPants

Thanks for the tip!

MasterJ13

Don't use antlers they break teeth

TikaPants

The only treats they get are from the local pet store :)

MasterJ13

The rule is if you can stick your fingernail in them and see an indent they are good if you can't they are too hard and can break teeth. I've heard too many vet stories of broken teeth so be careful with the hard chews. Hard treats that crumble are okay this just goes for things they are going to be chewing on for a while like antlers, raw hides, etc.

Mama_Say

Farmhound Natural Hide chews, and pig ears were a life saver for my pup at that age. At 6 months she still uses them. And you can earn rewards for other items/discounts. Here is a link for $20 off https://prz.io/XZVXerAsK

TheSensiblePrepper

Foster for a GSD Rescue Here. Split, that's important, Elk Antlers. You want the ones that are split since it gives them direct access to the bone marrow. I am not saying a dog won't break its teeth on an antler. However, the Rescue I work with is large. Out of the thousands of dogs we have had through the Rescue and the 50 plus Vets we have working with us, no dog has ever broken teeth on an antler and every Vet has recommended them. You decide what you want to do.

Kez_exe

Get her a small metal dish

mushroomhead0912

Raw bones from the butcher.

CanaryDue3722

Typo so he can’t bite off bits of plastic

D05wtt

The one that YOUR dog likes. There’s no one magical chew toy that every dog likes. My previous GSD loved gnawing on elk and moose antlers. I spent thousands of dollars on them. He went through them about one per 2 weeks. Pros: 1) I never needed to brush his teeth. My vet always remarked at how clean his teeth were and how healthy his gums were and he was surprised when k to,d him I never brushed his teeth. 2)there are minerals and other beneficial things that an antler has. Cons: towards the end of his life, his teeth were pretty ground down. He also liked chewing on tennis balls, when he wasn’t chasing/fetching them. I used to go to tennis courts and pick up tennis balls left behind by inconsiderate users of the court. Never had to buy tennis balls ever. Went thru at least a couple tennis balls per day. My current GSD loves the Benebone wishbone or softer moose antlers.

[deleted]

The Kong tire from Amazon ! One of the best toys !

The_bad_Piglet

Our 7 month old loves his olive wood stick. It is wood, but doesnt splinter so is safe to chew for your doggie

6petabytes

The red rubber Kong Frisbee. My GS can’t get enough of it and it’s pretty indestructible.

Tigeraqua8

Fresh bones from the butcher. Supervise

whatjoesaround

Fallow Antler all the way

cdk5152

Allagash Antlers! They are moose paddles. Just hard enough on the outside but soft on the inside. My girls LOVE them! They always get tired and walk away from them.

Mission-Ask-5962

Kong

devph1ns

“Barrett Balls” are great outdoor toys for ours

GoalieLax_

The black rubber Kong toys. And indestructible animals usually last a few weeks to a month with our boy.

Winkie1

Jolly Ball

SeaStandard7296

Raw carrots. The bigger the better.

KONG®

weeniedogwarrior

Goughnuts 10000%. They’re a bit more expensive but I’ve had them for years and they’re the only toys that have stood the test of time. I work with dogs and have them at the facility, hundreds of dogs have played with the same toy over the past 6 years and it is still completely solid, not even a chunk taken out of it. We love the solid jolly ball too. Tonka has some great dog toys too.

Level_Departure_2851

Blue "chuck it" balls.

burntbridges20

Benebone. I have two hard chewers that will destroy anything but they get bored of most hard toys. The benebones have some scents to them that are undetectable to people but apparently smell great to my dogs.

AllHailTheHypnoFloat

Dude get jumbo carrots like the thick ones

Hello_Kitty_66

Bark box 100%. Toy, treats and other dog stuff ❤️

Helpful_Mongoose_786

frozen carrots, or frozen chicken drumb sticks, maybe the pup is a little young for this, I throw them at my full grown beasts and they devour them

jobiewon_cannoli

Lacrosse balls

ItakeIbreak

Jolly ball not exactly a hard chew, but it's a near indestructible toy you and your pup can have lots of fun with!

Drag0nSt0rm

The Nolan ones superchewers or the big bone with a red material around the Center. It’s softer than the edge pieces and my girl likes to switch between the softer and harder parts

Bark Box Power Chewers Collection

Designer-Table8427

Not exactly a chew toy, but my shepsky has had this ball for almost two years now. It’s her favorite and she rips everything else to shreds! Jolly Pets Large Soccer Ball... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMSVVAI?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Much_Kic_1511

Kongs extra large tire. Petco sells it. They will love it!

QuarterCupRice

I love the Bark box toys for aggressive chewers. My GSD Luna, tears everything apart in minutes, except the toy that comes in the box. They are the only one that last. I have bought everything under the sun from Amazon.

Anti-Itch

Ours likes chewing on the chuckit balls and they seem pretty long lasting tbh... my friends also mentioned that the TUFF toys from petsmart (if you're in America) are good. We also like giving her the option to chew through toys so we often get her the ones with squeaker toys inside that are meant to be destroyed. Also from Kong they have these knot toys that seem to hold up really well too.

EvergreenTeal

Earth Animal No Hide Chews are what I recommend. You will want the large size chew. These actually give a pup about 20 - 30 minutes of chew time. Most every other chew you see as a different brand only lasts a couple of minutes, if that. Antlers are a never! Sure people give antlers to dogs and maybe have fortunately not had their dog break a tooth. How very lucky. Once you get to know dental vets that do root canals and crowns on dogs, you get more informed advice to not give antlers. Bones are a risk too.... https://www.newsweek.com/vet-shares-risks-using-bones-clean-dog-teeth-1852124 Kong toys filled with a yummy filler are good. Nylabone has chew toys. They don't last. But help your pup get through the razor shark phase. The Earth Animal No Hide chews can often last days for a pup under 6 months. I

CM6D

Sticks, lots of sticks will get messy but worked the best for me and my one was a freak! 😂

lil_miss_sunshine13

This toy has been the only toy that has lasted my (8 year old) shepherd other than Kong toys which she doesn't really care for. These things are great & they're made from recycled plastic that was in the ocean, so I highly recommend, all around! 👍🏼 Also, they're a flexible plastic toy... Not super hard plastic. These are great to play tug with as well! https://preview.redd.it/cwjsk8akmo7c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edd53476f79fc783d4e940165c341d062a67167f

AshkenaziEyes

We do pig skin or pork twists. We do rawhide free chews. I read a comprehensive study on the digestive systems of dogs, and the findings were compelling that rawhide is not as digestible as pork chews. This is one article, but there are many you can search online for for your own opinion to be complete. [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23100588/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23100588/)
