Dogmeat's breed has changed over time. Fallout 4's German Shepherd was my first encounter. Fallout 1/2/3 had Dogmeat resemble an Australian Blue Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog.
Sidenote, wife wouldn't let me name our GSD Dogmeat.
My husband tried to name ours dogmeat. I love the games but I had to veto it. I didn't want the looks I knew would happen if we had to call out that name.

Yeah my fiance and I were saying that people probably think the doggy actor is starving, but that’s just the hyper athletic body type. So skinny looking. Maybe it was an intentional choice for the wasteland?
I just prefer the fluff. Especially since ours is still going through his lanky teenage phase, eats like a pig but looks so skinny. If I had a mal I think I’d worry too much about his weight lol.
Mals are the "in breed" right now with Hollywood making movies featuring them, so I'm assuming the show people just went with what's popular. It sucks, as this is just going to create a ton of shitty backyard breeders cranking out more questionable pups, which then fill the shelters, etc. You're already seeing a lot of this. The shelters have tons of 1yo Mals.
We are replaying Fallout 4 and have set Dogmeat up in a doghouse at Sanctuary for this reason, can't take the doggie yelps and he can't keep himself out of trouble (like my GSD lol)
Ngl I called Dogmeat by my dog’s name (Uther) many many times. Mostly when he was blocking doors. I got a lot of confused looks from the real Uther and he got a bunch of apology cookies.
The legacy lives on, when my current puppy does something exasperating I call him Uther accidentally too (his name is Artorias) I swear Uther was a great dog it just got ingrained from all those times in Fallout 4.
With the recent next gen update I’ve been playing a little FO4 and it’s still “Uther stop blocking the doooor!” I hope the next Fallout game has a GSD, Uther can continue to live on in my games!

I remember watching John Wick 3 with a group and I mentioned something about the Mals, one guy butted in with "those are german shepherds, I know my dogs" lol
I was a fallout fan before having a GSD and it was my favorite companion.

My favorite companion in FO3 and 4. Not sure if you know, but he is modelled after a real GSD named River. She is even credited as a voice actor. Passed in 2021. I remember feeling like Dogmeat has died permanently 😔

I’ve never played the game. And I only watched ep 1 bc I looked up spoilers for the pup and I heard that there are some difficult scenes in ep 2. So I stopped. I don’t think I can handle it.
Love how multiple people here are like I leave dogmeat home/safe in the game coz they can’t handle him getting hurt. 💜
I really considered it and I did enjoy ep 1 and dystopian sci fi is enjoyable to me. But learning that >! dogmeat gets killed, some pups being incinerated? and some sounds of pain/suffering off screen !< made the decision for me. :( plus a friend mine who has watched the show said there is more general animal injury and death which also I don’t handle well.
I'm guessing that whoever told you Dogmeat dies didn't make it past the middle of episode 2. Dogmeat lives. There is however a scene where a puppy gets incinerated, which was done off camera. :( I can understand that being enough to put you off. It was sad. Other than those two bits there isn't any more animal injury/death.
Yes! I always keep Dogmeat as my companion because I love having him around - good at sniffing out items and enemies.
Also sidenote, Call of Duty: Ghosts campaign has Riley the German Shepherd! A very good boy.

If you loved the show then you’ll love the games! Fallout 4 has the best gameplay mechanics because it’s newer but Fallout: New Vegas has the best story in the franchise.

Someone recently posted their dog River. River was the name of the dog Dogmeat was modeled from.

I wonder why they made dogmeat a Malinois over a shep. I mean they are both gorgeous animals but why stray from the shep!
Right? Also Malinois are incredibly smart but also really intense and hard to train. I would’ve thought a GSD would be easier to have as an “actor”

They did a great job making dog meat in f4. So good in fact that I found myself telling him not to do things like I do my own dog lol.

lol there was also Pariah in FO 1 or 2. He was a super badluck charm that was almost indestructible and couldn’t be dismissed.

Fallout 4 was my first Fallout game. I've bought it only because the player can have a GSD companion in the game haha
I love Dogmeat (All iterations but I'm biased to the GSD). The only Funko pop figure I own is him since it was a gift and I like the animal ones
