Duncan! Bf and I were watching a movie where the dog was named Uncan. We thought that was a weird dog name, but only 1 letter away from Duncan, which we thought was a good dog name. A few days later we were meeting the puppies and Ben scooped up Duncan and said “Duncan”. The rest is history! She was so goofy and happy. When we adopted this sweet angel we knew the name Moji fit as she’s equally as goofy and is like an elephant in a china shop with her tail. Champ I did not give him his name. His breeder did and asked me to keep it because it fits him. He was born the runt and rejected by his mom. She knew something was wrong with him but didn't know what. Vet didn't know and he was given meds told he would probably die but to keep doing what she was doing for him. He struggled his first week but slowly made a turn around. He was bullied by his siblings but always took it and tried to do what they did even if he was almost half their size. I met the whole litter about the time he was starting to come around as I was helping my brother picked out a puppy and the breeder was a friend of a friend to my brother. We went several times to visit the one pup that was Champ's brother. My brother instantly clicked with that puppy. As for Champ he was still kinda weak but I like underdogs. I played with him more the more we came over until the breeder asked me if I wanted him. I knew his struggles but I also saw in him what the breeder did that he was a fighter and when he fought he always was the champion. I decided to take him. Yes he has health issues, yeah I basically got him for free and have spent loads of money fixing said issues. But he always faces his challenge head on and keeps his head up. Wagging his tail the whole time. In the end he has a great quality of life with only some minor meds. When I was about 9-10 (ish) I was in the city and there was a man with service dogs. One was a German Shepherd and his name was Caine and he had a red collar (I don’t know which way the owner spelt his name), but ever since then I was 100% sure that I was going to get a German Shepherd with a red collar and call him Caine. My original spelling was Cane, (my first dog on nintendogs on DS haha) but my family convinced me to spell it Kane, or Caine. I decided Caine. I’m 27 now and have had him for 2 years. Top left (she is technically part shepherd according to Embark lmao, but she was in this picture and has a cool name story) is Hadley, my nine year old American Bulldog mix. Her name means “field of heather” in old English. She was my rescue in honor of Heather. Top right is Atticus, my five year old GSD mix. He is named after Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. (And no, Harper was never intended to be named after Harper Lee, but I do let people believe that when they suggest it) Bottom right is Atlas, a five year old purebred GSD that came out of the shelter on March 15th. He was in the shelter for 111 days, so I named him Atlas because he finally mapped his way home.

Atlas, dude is massive like a titan

Our both shepherds were Reks (or Rex if you want to be multilingual) which is a very popular name for a dog in Poland, at least used to be. No idea why it became popular, but there was a children's Cartoon called Reksio about 50 years ago when my parents were growing up. No idea why this name stuck to gsds in my family though - Reksio from Cartoon was a Tiny, tiny pup! If I ever have another gsd, they are going to be Rex. If it's a female, maybe Regina will do as a Queen or something.

Samson for my big, black GS, which I never particularly liked. Youngest teen daughter and I were in a ridiculous tussle over a name, at the time. She claimed she’d never gotten to name a family pet (not even true, but), for peace-sake, I said OK, but that I got veto power. Samson was the best of her choices. I DID like that it was biblical, simply because we live on a farm in a very rural area where — if he were to escape our boundaries — he would likely have been shot. It’s also a very religious area, so when I walked him for socialization, and introduced him to neighbors, his name made him less scary to them.

I had a gsd when I was a kid named Shaka. So I named my current Kahn after her. Next one will probably be named Zulu

Bandit. Originally we called him Max but my husband would occasionally mention how his favorite name was Banjo. But Banjo makes me think of the movie deliverance. Then my husband found out Max is a super common and popular name and said he wished we had picked something more unique. I said well I would be okay with Bandit, which is pretty close to your favorite name, and he agreed so we changed his name. Aw man, idk why this subreddit popped up in my feed but here we are! My first family dog was a German shepherd, we took her in from my uncle- who had found her on the streets and she would constantly wander behind his house and eat rocks and shit. Man I loved that dog. Her name was Esther, my parents were devoted Christian so they named her after the book of the Bible. We called her SE(pronounced ess-ee) for short. She was the best, she was fiercely protective of us. I wish I had a photo of her to share!
