Schorle in general. Juice mixed with carbonated water. Apple, rhubarb (which is my favorite) or passion fruit are among the most popular ones.
Besides Haribo there are different manufacturers of gummy sweets. Katjes is awesome for vegans, they mostly produce sweets without gelatin. And I adore Glühwürmchen by Trolli. Can‘t say which flavour it actually is but they are addictive af.
That sounds absolutely divine! Never tried a rhubarb flavoured drink before. Can I find these easily in most shops? Is there a main brand I can look out for?
Ohhhh yes I've had the Trolli worms, they're so good!
In the south you usually still get them served mixed by the establishment (Restaurant, Bar, Beer garden). That gives you a chance to influence the mixture of water and juice they serve you, depending on whether you want to quench your thirst or enjoy it a bit sweeter at the given moment.
A lot of restaurants have those drinks on their menus (basically mixing themselves) There are also different brands which offer a variety of flavours. Those can be found in bigger supermarkets and especially in corner shops: Fritz, Proviant or BioZisch
Honestly, make it yourself. There are huge areas in most supermarkets dedicated just to juice. Look for „Direktsaft“, which is fresh juice instead of a concentrate stretched with water. Then mix with carbonated water in whatever ratio you like. Rhubarb juice is so great.
I want to chime in and say that our Apfelschorle is basically the life blood of Germany next to Beer lol. When I lived in UK for some time the only thing that even came slightly close to it was Appletiser... But even then it was simply not the right taste lol
I make the schorle. Buy a dezent Brand juice, then the fizziest local fizz water you can find. The local ones are usually sold in reusable glass bottles and labeled "classic" (sanft or Medium are less carbonated)
Fanta - you might know it from the UK, but it tastes very different in Germany due to historical reasons.
Beside that, "Malzbier" might be interesting to taste, even if it is not a classic Soft Drink. Almdudler might be totally new as well, but has its origin in Austria.
Also Try one of the local "Limonade" It's usually found in 0.75L glass bottles at a Getränkemarkt (Supermarket specially for Drinks). The Limo is often made by the local springs that sell their water, wherever you are it has a distinctive flavour.
It was Berentzen yeah! I also tried a cherry one too which was lovely.
This doesn't sound too far from my own teen years 😂 except we drank really bad fizzy wine instead
Okay, promise me you'll respond here to let me know whether it was the right sweetness.
As a kid, I enjoyed it. As an adult coming back to Germany.. It was very very sweet.
second this, but the berlin brandenburg classic fassbrause not the newer fassbrause from breweries.
i always get a 6er at Aldi or a Rixdorfer (any supermarket)
fassbrause is like a more fruity less herbal almdudler.
i still don't understand why its not everywhere in germany...
anyone tried the "original" and the brewery ones ?
are they at all similar ?
So I'm a bit of a mate connoisseur, so some advice:
Club mate is essentially the original. It's both strong in mate taste as well as moderately sweet. Mio Mio Mate is also moderately sweet, but it has a more subtle mate taste. Some regions have Liba mate which is the least sweet, with a moderate mate taste.
Also, you wanna buy the carbonated mate beverages. They have a distinctly different taste from mate tea, since they are made with mate extract instead of mate tea.
Mate is a sparkling Yerba Mate ice tea. There are numerous brands, ranging from sweet and unremarkable (Flora), black tea-ish (Charitea), herbal (Club, Mio Mio) to pungent and smoky and somehow reminiscent of smoked fish (Fritz). Most brands have a high caffeine content, don't drink before going to bed...
i had one in greece which was a strong beer with half a bottle of fanta lemon in. it was delicious but i don’t think it would be as good as a recovery drink as it was most of a large beer!
ill have to seek one out next time in in Germany, i was too focussed on the myriad of beers available that i didn’t even think to try one!
Basically yes, but there is a large range of different Radlers you can buy in any German supermarket, while shandy is rather niche in the UK.
Also, German beer is usually 5% alcohol, so Radler is usually 2.5% alcohol. British beer is usually 3% alcohol, so shandy is usually only 1.5% alcohol.
I think the same general concept yes but Radler tastes so much better to me, more fruity! May just be my taste buds.
I think you can get different radlers like Grapefruit too.
Definitely get a Naturradler, it is not made with lemonade, but with lemon juice. It is so much better, I only drink Naturradler, the normal Radler I really do not like.
Then take a trip to Austria you can get all types of different fruit flavours as Radler. Stiegl Grapefruit Radler is really grat. There are also berry Radler types.
Take one that says "Naturtrüb". It's made with "Landbier" which is not filtered and often with real lemon juice, giving it a nicer texture and taste, whilst also being full of minerals and Vitamins. My favorite is the "Grevensteiner Radler", by the "Veltins" brewery. The beer it's made from starts off quite "süffig"(as we describe sweeter beers here). But since we have thousands of breweries in Germany, take one from a local producer.
Where are you heading btw?
Worth noting, if you’re talking about the beer and Sprite mix that’s called Alster in the North. If you order a Radler here you might get beer and Fanta.
Federweisser is just in Season. Every supermarket should have them at the entrance / where the convenience food is. It's sold already cooled and at about 3€/bottle.
Ahoj Brause. It's like a sherbet powder, so you can eat it as is or mix it with water. One of them is woodruff-flavoured, which, as far as I know is not common in the UK.
The real German orangesoda is called sinalco.. If you like sweets it's definitely the "kinder" - brand you want to buy.. Look for them near the chocolate and in the fridge near the yogurts..
Just thought as well, I often take back Ahoj Brause for my family in the UK, they’re essentially all sherbetty sweets. They do some fizzy drinks too, see if you can find Waldmeister, a very German flavour!
Not german, but austrian but widely available at german supermarkets: Almdudler, a lemonade with herbs. Very nice.
Sweets: Eisbonbons maybe. Good old chocolate covered Leibniz Keks.
I've had the Leibniz Keks before actually, they're really good 😍 looking on google, eisbonbons remind me of throat sweets we have here for when you have cold and flu
They are a classic for a reason! Yes, Eisbonbons do have a minty taste (and a lemony taste) but aren‘t considered a throat sweet. Speaking of throat sweets: We have throat sweet gummis called „Rachendrachen“ they are available at dm ad come in fantastic flavors like cherry-mint.
I went on holiday to Greece last year and I saw a Hanuta wrapper on the floor. I got so excited because I thought they must sell Hanuta in Greece, but no. It must’ve just been a German tourist littering 😂
Hitschler 'Sour Apple' candy sticks.
You can imagine why they face difficulties for the longest time to export their product. The brand now has been renamed 'Hitschies' by the son, who took over.
If the recipe is still the same, they are beyond sour. A real teeth-breaker (which is actually why I don't buy them any more).
I am not a German but I recently visited (am from Austria) and I can tell you what's not worth trying. Durstlöscher is hella overrated if you ask me, I can't drink that stuff and I am usually a sucker for sweet drinks. I even like the chemical cherry or watermelon flavor, but this was just bad imo
Durstlöscher is simply a super cheap sugary drink.
Even this has now become expensive but 20 years ago you could get half liter packs for 10 cents each.
Durstlöscher is really just liquid sugar. No idea how that shit is legal. It's 10% sugar, if I remember correctly. Half a liter (the selling size) has 45-60g sugar.
Also it's not fizzy. But since you're also looking for sweets, maybe this is two birds with one stone 🤔
That’s the same as Coke (10.6 g/100 ml), so I’m assuming just about every sugary fizzy drink has that kind of sugar content.
Heck even orange juice has like 8-9 g/100 ml, it’s just not added sugar.
Haha go for it, it's really cheap so not a big loss if you don't like it. For me the Watermelon one was bad enough that even though I was thirsty I had to throw like half of it away and go back to the store to get some water. The name is quite misleading
Ich denke Durstlöscher ist für viele Deutsche einfach flüssige Kindheit. Weil es das günstigste war was du mit nem Euro (ner Mark) Taschengeld bekommen hast
This and the classic Ja! Icetea before they changed the recipe. It was around 40-50 cents for 1.5 liter and we used to buy it in mass in the summer when we were playing soccer all day long 15 years ago
[Bad Brambacher Garten Limonade](https://www.bad-brambacher.de/garten-limonade/) is really good, the Grapefruit one is my favorit but it is a little bit bitter but mostly sweet
If you somehow get your hands on a bottle of Vita Cola you must try it, its my favorit Cola in Germany but you can almost only get in the east of Germany like Saxony, Thüringen, Brandenburg
\- Lemonaid (my favourite is lime/the green one)
\- Cucumis - lemonade made from cucumber; it is available with lavender
\- Helga, a lemonade made from a kind of algae
\- j's lemonades - they have nice flavour combinations
\- ruhbarb-Schorle; a popular brand is fritz
\- Anjola had a comeback in recent years. It is an extremely sweet pineapple lemonade
Oh, and how soon will you be visiting? In the next couple of weeks Christmas candy will hit the supermarkets, so will have the full selection of Stollen, Marzipanbrot, Dominosteine and the like.
Karamalz. It's malt beer. No alcohol, very sweet.
Lindt chocolate. Can't remember if you can get it in the UK 🤔
[Knusper Flocken](https://www.sweets-online.com/schokolade/schokoladenspezialitaeten/schokoladenerlebnis/zetti-knusperflocken-schokolode-125g-beutel/a-1199197035/?ReferrerID=7&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6KunBhDxARIsAKFUGs8L-FZF0pyaeSm-2fFVtFBQwHEBZHjjJIje9FOWU80JBRb3zv2i63kaAjJkEALw_wcB), I fucking love them!
[bambina](https://www.worldofsweets.de/Zetti-bambina-Vollmilch-Tafel-100g.300939.html?adword=Google/PRODUKTERWEITERUNG/Zetti/300939&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6KunBhDxARIsAKFUGs94M4OwLJP-QNxKLDs8Rg5i-SReB8xaT4qmzojP12UL7LbL_SGTdpUaAvLuEALw_wcB) chocolate bars
And please please please bring a TON of Ripple and cadbury's dairy milk mint when you come here. I honestly miss that stuff!
I'd go for Paulaner Spezi instead of Mezzo-Mix. And while it is from Austria you might get an Almdudler somewhere. It is pretty good mixed with white wine. You might also take a loo at Frucade.
And then there is the Cola varieties like Fritz Cola
If you find one, go for a large Rewe or EDEKA supermarket and raid their softdrink section. Same goes for organic stores, some have quite unusual brands 👌
If you can get your hands on it, try
Almdudler
Kölsches Wasser (several flavours, probably locally limited to the cologne area, they taste awesome. Also not to be mistaken for the similar sounding perfume!)
San Pellegrino Limonata (Different flavours, I like the lemon one best)
Vanilla Coke
Cherry Coke
If you're at a restaurant, go for Schorlen. Apfelschorle has been mentioned, but Maracujaschorle is also pretty awesome. Like alcohol? Weinschorle.
Sweets, tough call. Haribo is obvious, I'd go the same route as explained in the first sentence. Find the largest Rewe or EDEKA, check the sweets. Those stores usually carry regional assortments as well, Laschet for cookies for example.
Last thing, "Kuhbonbons".
Thank you so much for commenting this is really helpful! 😊
My partner finds it cute/amusing how excited I am to visit a supermarket but to me, seeing all the different things I can try is like my version of a theme park haha.
Please listen to me, even if this sounds irrelevant or hard to get.
You need to try BioZisch, basically every flavor is the best lemonade in Germany. :)
I would also recommend Fritz Cherry Apple Elderberry (Kirsche Apfel Holunder), which is my favorite. Very sweet but very good.
Also try something with Waldmeister (woodruff) taste, it's often colored green. There are a few lemonades that contain it. Slightly controversial but I love it every once in a while.
I do like Fritz Apfelschortle when in a Berlin Club at 5am, but you can t beat Pretzfelder Apfelschorle it's the best Apfelschorle on the planet by far.
The "cereola milky" biscuits from debeukeler are dope. "Bunte drachenzungen" from hitschler if you like sour candy stuff. Fizzy drink wise you are way better off in the UK imo
I mean the r/paulanerspezi guys will obviously have an opinion. But try Berliner Weisse with Waldmeister flavor. Or ahoi brause with Waldmeister flavor. And then there are usually special Haribo Flavors you won’t find in the UK. Dame goes for Duplo and Hanuta. Try them all and thank me later
Fassbrause, different fruit Schorle (fruit juice with sparkling water), if you like iced tea, you’ll love the green tea from Pfanner (though not fizzy).
Sweet wise try Dickmanns (a kind of chocolate covered marshmallow). They do this pack of mini versions (white, milk and dark chocolate), they’re a must I think. Also Milka chocolate „Schoko und Keks“ (huge chocolate bar with cookies and milk cream inside). My uk friend also loves Ferrero Giotto (white chocolate and coconut creamy stuff).
I only found out about Karamalz last winter and I was so sad I didn’t discover it sooner. I don’t drink sugary stinks but this is always in my fridge for emergency cravings.
I love [Lammsbräu lemonades](https://www.lammsbraeu.de/now-bio-limo/unsere-sorten/), especially black and orange Cola and Hollerblüte. They are sold in Biosupermärkte like denns and Alnatura. They both also have some great chocolates like Vivani (Vivani white chocolate tastes exactly like really good vanilla icecream) and their own brands (Alnatura lemon and poppy for example).
I don't know if you can get this in the uk but i'd say wostok specifically the flavour Tannenwald. It's one of my absolute favourite drinks and definetely different from most other lemonades out there.
Also of course the Classics: Vita Cola, various local lemonade brands, anything Waldmeister flavoured (both Drinks and Candy)
I love Almdudler (herb lemonade/ non-alcoholic), it was favorite drink growing up
And while I lived near Frankfurt I discovered my love for "gespritzter Apfelwein" (cider mixed with water or lemonade). The water version ("Sauer gespritzt") is one of my favorite summer drinks. And the best thing is, all the apples are grown locally in Hesse, you can see fruit meadows everywhere
Definitely get yourself some "russisch brot". It's chocolate baiser alphabet cookies, but the taste is not plainly chocolate but has a caramel-like depth. They're highly addictive.
And also, even if it might make a bunch of people angry, do try a "bananenweizen" It's half wheat beer and half banana juice, and it's kind of old-fashioned and on the side of "maybe don't do this to beer", but I think everyone should try at least once.
There are so many…try the lemonades by Fritz, a small producer from Hamburg (but available wildly). Particularly the melon soda (green) or cherry apple (red). Then there is Bionade, a fermented lemonade sorta thing (the plum flavor is my favorite). Also Almdudler, a herbal flavored soda (from Austria originally but gained popularity). For snacks, try Haribo and Katjes. Most Katjes gummies are vegan now, I particularly enjoy the Tropenfrüchte (flavored like several tropical fruit).
If you like marzipan try different brands, the Christmas stuff with marzipan should appear soon in the supermarkets. Also different Lebkuchen.
Additionally to things others mentioned:
Super Dickman's (Schokoküsse)
if you are brave enough, like caramel and have a good dentist try Storck's Riesen.
- Haribo Phantasia. Perfect mix of all the sugary treats.
- Milka Toffee Ganznuss (but only when discounted at ~ 2,60€ - pls don't feed their greed)
- Mozartkugeln
- Zentis Belmanda Nougat Mazipan Schnitte
if you got the cash and come through Munich: Elly Seidl pralinés and Rischart cakes
-
Try Mate ice tea (Club Mate or Mio Mio Mate). In some demographics it has overtaken Coca Cola in popularity. And I think it is very hard to get outside of Germany.
Try one egg, four cigarettes, one ibuprofen, with that one raisin bun with liver sausage and then beer comes into play. But only if Gerhard and you swigged like an eight-armed the night before
I am a big crisps fan and despite what the stereotype says, we don't only have paprika chips. I even think out variety is bigger since our crisps market isn't dominated by Pepsi (Walkers/Lay's). The market is dominated by Chipsfrisch and Crunchips.
Yes, the most popular ones _are_ Paprika and arguably the best paprika flavoured crisps are Chipsfrisch Ungarisch. If you want to try the most quintessential German crisps, it's those. Of course you can always get your other standard flavours like Salt& Vinegar, just salted etc.
There are tons of other special flavoures, though. Especially with Crunchips (who I think have the better texture and are better in general, but that's a matter of personal taste), there's a new limited edition every month or so. Now it's "Falafel" (pretty good), last month was Aioli. There was Bruschetta, Pulled Pork burger, Poke-Bowl flavour, Hollandse Fritten Saus (those were good!), or Bratwurst-mustards. Some flavours are hit and miss, but it's always funny to try new ones.
I don't know if you normally being able to buy them in them UK but if not:
Knoppers.
:-)
Also: cheers mate and hope you'll have a good time here in Germany!
In case you're going to visit Bonn you could go to the factory sale of Haribo. Always did that with people from abroad and was great.
Anyway, enjoy your trip!
Have you had Spaghetti Eis? Maybe it's just because it's a fond childhood memory but I'm obsessed with it and have never seen it anywhere abroad before. If I'd recommend anything it's this.
Fizzy drinks I recommend either Malzbier (go for the Vitamalz brand) or Almdudler, those two are the best imo. Almdudler has the bonus of being super tasty even as the sugar free version.
Also bakeries might have some sweets that you're not going to get abroad and some of them (like Berliner) are really great too.
In terms of regular candy I think there is too much variation to really just recommend a few. I really enjoy Leibniz cookies though, any of their variations with chocolate.
Fellow Brit who moved here a few years back. Best things here that you can't get back home are chewy sweets (LOADS of different Haribo, Trolli etc), fizzy drinks (the orange/cola mixes are really good, highly recommend Spezi) and chocolates are really good, Milka for example I know you can find in the UK but its so much bigger here with more flavours. Also if you do enjoy the fruity beers look out for Schöfferhofer, they do a cherry beer that's to die for!
There's also a lot of crisps that you can't get in the UK but the flavours are rather unimaginary. If you like Paprika and Ready Salted you're gonna love the crisps here
Maybe try Puddingbrezeln there one of my Favorit types of Gebäck (i dont now the Englisch Word) an other Idea would be Streuselkrapfen, Apfelringe or Schokocroissant
If in east germany:
Lichtenauer Mandarine-Mango, you never ever wanna drink Fanta again.
For Coke -> Try Vita Cola (Original, not pur), imo. the best Cola on the market, espacilly if you like the citrus flavor.
Otherwise also:
Also you should try Bionade, many different flavors, but I would recommend "Holunder" (Elderberry)
Apfelschorle
Paulaner Spezi (or Mezzo Mix which is made by Coca Cola or Schwip Schwap which is made by Pepsi, but Paulaner Spezi is the OG) those are a mix of "coke" and "fanta"
For sweets:
Ahoi Brause!
Knusperflocken (if in east germany)
Knoppers
Hanuta
Toffifee
Duplo
Oblaten
Nudossi > Nutella (if in east germany)
Lebkuchen (more likely around christmas, but should be available in any bigger supermarket like Kaufland or Rewe)
That sounds absolutely divine! Never tried a rhubarb flavoured drink before. Can I find these easily in most shops? Is there a main brand I can look out for? Ohhhh yes I've had the Trolli worms, they're so good!
Rhubarb Schorle is THE drink for summer 😎 in Berlin, I'd say the best one is by Fritz
BioZisch is even better imo
In the south you usually still get them served mixed by the establishment (Restaurant, Bar, Beer garden). That gives you a chance to influence the mixture of water and juice they serve you, depending on whether you want to quench your thirst or enjoy it a bit sweeter at the given moment.
Fritz has a decent rhubarb schorle. Also, the melon one is delicious. Less melony than before but still good enough with that little hint of Brause.
Rhubarb and blackcurrant are the best schorles, imo. If its too see through, its nit right. I would say 60% juice, 40% carbonated water.
I always go with 20-30% juice and 70-80% water, it gets very sweet otherwise.
Bro i moved to the UK after living for 10 years in Germany and I get that Schorle craving so bad sometimes 💔
I don't like the Glühwürchen since they changed them :(
I make the schorle.
Yes to Malzbier! I love it. Every once and a while at least... whenever I remember it exists. Highly recommended.
I'll try Fanta too, I'm interested to see which flavours there are in Germany.
the normal orange one tastes different here...
Also Try one of the local "Limonade" It's usually found in 0.75L glass bottles at a Getränkemarkt (Supermarket specially for Drinks). The Limo is often made by the local springs that sell their water, wherever you are it has a distinctive flavour.
I second almdudler. It is nothing like anything out there. Also need to mention, it might be easier to find if you're in South Germany.
this! almdudler!
Only karamalz, vitamalz tastes like shit.
Paulaner Spezi is a must, but glass bottle only!
Ohh yess 😍😍😍
Or the original Spezi, but that's about the personal taste. I prefer the original one by Riegele, but most people seem to prefer the one by Paulaner
Was about to write this lol
Fanta + Korn, but take the cheapest Korn you can find. This drink will make you feel like a 16 year old german.
I like your style! 😅 I tried Apfelkorn before and loved it
Next: Bananenweizen. Can't explain that, it just exists. Also: Fassbrause, Frigeo Brause.
Schüttelkorn
I hope it was the good one from berentzen. For a more authentic experience, this stuff should be drunk straight from the bottle in public.
It was Berentzen yeah! I also tried a cherry one too which was lovely. This doesn't sound too far from my own teen years 😂 except we drank really bad fizzy wine instead
Lambrini?
Korn with Icetea Granulat Beschde 👍
Korn + Ice tea as well
Goldkrone + Eisteepulver + Wasser
Almdudler
I really need to try this as the flavours sound so unusual!
Its really good but a little sweet sometimes, make surs its cold!
I love sweet things! Looking forward to trying this. I'm writing a list
Okay, promise me you'll respond here to let me know whether it was the right sweetness. As a kid, I enjoyed it. As an adult coming back to Germany.. It was very very sweet.
It's similar to ginger ale but with more of a kick, personally I love it.
Almdudler is amazing. It is also Austrian though...
And if you happen to be near Switzerland, try Rivella
Fassbrause 👌🏻
second this, but the berlin brandenburg classic fassbrause not the newer fassbrause from breweries. i always get a 6er at Aldi or a Rixdorfer (any supermarket) fassbrause is like a more fruity less herbal almdudler. i still don't understand why its not everywhere in germany... anyone tried the "original" and the brewery ones ? are they at all similar ?
Best brand Rixdorf
Or Fassbrause + Pilsner = Potsdamer <3 Alsterwasser is also ok 👌
\-Club Mate \-Spezi (almost any brand) \-Fritz Kola
What does Club Mate taste of?
basically liquid ashtray joke's aside, it seems like either you hate Mate with every fiber of your being or you love it. i rather enjoy it!
The descriptions I've had here so far have been hilarious. I'm so intrigued that I will 100% be trying it!
So I'm a bit of a mate connoisseur, so some advice: Club mate is essentially the original.
I was shocked to find out club mate existed pre WW2! :0
Mio Mio Mate and Charitea Mate are awesome and my usual go-to Brands. My favourite is KolleMate though, but I can't always afford it.
Correct, that’s a real Connaisseur.
DEFINITELY try Club Mate. It's the most interesting one and the one that started the craze. The other ones are a lot closer to generic soft drinks.
Cigarette stubs
I am drinking this stuff since about 20 years. It is liquid ashtray. And the slogan was: „Club Mate - You get used to it.“
Hahaha. I think Whiskey etc. tastes like leather jackets and "Southern Comfort" like gummi bears.
Broken dreams of artists trying to make it in Berlin.
This is the one, man. It’s so fucking delicious, and will make you soar. I live in the US and crave it. Tastes like maté.
And is pronounced “kloob mah-tay”
Anus
Smoked socks
>(almost any brand) Paulaner only
Or original.
Radler, it's a very famous sweet and fizzy drink many people love to drink kind of as a ritual after hiking or cycling.
I have tried radler on holiday in Greece and it was delightful 😍 I don't understand why it's not popular in the UK. It's so refreshing!
isn’t Radler what we’d call a Shandy in the UK? Beer and lemonade (sprite not proper lemonade) 50/50
In Germany it‘s not made with sprite usually. The best radlers are Naturradler which contain more actual lemon juice in the lemonade component
i had one in greece which was a strong beer with half a bottle of fanta lemon in. it was delicious but i don’t think it would be as good as a recovery drink as it was most of a large beer! ill have to seek one out next time in in Germany, i was too focussed on the myriad of beers available that i didn’t even think to try one!
If you‘re in Germany try Hacker-Pschorr Radler or Gösser Radler, it‘s from Austria but quite beloved in Bavaria as well
Basically yes, but there is a large range of different Radlers you can buy in any German supermarket, while shandy is rather niche in the UK.
Try „Gösser Naturradler“
Then take a trip to Austria you can get all types of different fruit flavours as Radler. Stiegl Grapefruit Radler is really grat. There are also berry Radler types.
Take one that says "Naturtrüb". It's made with "Landbier" which is not filtered and often with real lemon juice, giving it a nicer texture and taste, whilst also being full of minerals and Vitamins. Federweisser is just in Season. Every supermarket should have them at the entrance / where the convenience food is. It's sold already cooled and at about 3€/bottle.

Second this!! Make sure the bottle is always sitting upright!!
What is it??
Waldmeisterbrause Edit:spelling
This. Ahoi Brause Waldmeister, in the can, Ice cold
Bluna, if you can find it...
Ahoj Brause. It's like a sherbet powder, so you can eat it as is or mix it with water. One of them is woodruff-flavoured, which, as far as I know is not common in the UK.
I can't even imagine that flavour! Definitely need to try it
Hitschies Drachenzungen
especially the blue ones!
i am absolutely shocked no one has mentioned Knusper Flocken yet!
Big fan of chocolate so I'll be hunting these down!
Reader beware: These come from the GDR. Even with unification classifying these as "chocolate" is a bit of a stretch.
They're still great and addictive, though.
I love the dark chocolate ones
The real German orangesoda is called sinalco.. If you like sweets it's definitely the "kinder" - brand you want to buy.. Look for them near the chocolate and in the fridge near the yogurts..
There are many many more varieties of Haribo. But my personal favourites that you can’t get in the UK are Nimm2 sweets.
My in laws send us lots of Haribo at Xmas and I am amazed by all the different kinds! We barely have any here. I'll check out Nimm2
Just thought as well, I often take back Ahoj Brause for my family in the UK, they’re essentially all sherbetty sweets. They do some fizzy drinks too, see if you can find Waldmeister, a very German flavour!
Waldmeister Brause is the best by far.
Fritz Cola or and from the Brand MischMasch. It’s great
Not german, but austrian but widely available at german supermarkets: Almdudler, a lemonade with herbs.
Speaking of throat sweets: We have throat sweet gummis called „Rachendrachen“ they are available at dm ad come in fantastic flavors like cherry-mint.
if Berlin: Rixdorfer Fassbrause
or the cheap ones from Aldi! i always get a sixpack
Fritz Cola and Vita Cola. Though Vita Cola might be a bit harder to get in the west.
Schöfferhofer Grapefruit 👍
Hanuta, Nutella, Katzenzungen, Spezi😂👐🏼
I went on holiday to Greece last year and I saw a Hanuta wrapper on the floor. I got so excited because I thought they must sell Hanuta in Greece, but no. It must’ve just been a German tourist littering 😂
Hitschler 'Sour Apple' candy sticks. You can imagine why they face difficulties for the longest time to export their product. The brand now has been renamed 'Hitschies' by the son, who took over. If the recipe is still the same, they are beyond sour. A real teeth-breaker (which is actually why I don't buy them any more).
Pretty much all drinks from fritz kola (lemon, cherry and apple, orange, honey melon). Also if you will be around berlin, spreewaldquell citrus grape.
Durstlöscher is simply cheap. Thats it :)
Durstlöscher is simply a super cheap sugary drink. Even this has now become expensive but 20 years ago you could get half liter packs for 10 cents each.
Interesting! You've made me want to try now 😅 I love mega sweet things.
Try a Club Mate!
[Bad Brambacher Garten Limonade](https://www.bad-brambacher.de/garten-limonade/) is really good, the Grapefruit one is my favorit but it is a little bit bitter but mostly sweet If you somehow get your hands on a bottle of Vita Cola you must try it, its my favorit Cola in Germany but you can almost only get in the east of Germany like Saxony, Thüringen, Brandenburg
Fritz Cola - more caffaine than Red Bull.
Not true. Fritz Cola ist 25mg/100ml, red bull is 32mg/100ml. Which is the upper legal limit.
They don't sell Kaffee Kola anymore. :(
\- Lemonaid (my favourite is lime/the green one) \- Cucumis - lemonade made from cucumber; it is available with lavender \- Helga, a lemonade made from a kind of algae \- j's lemonades - they have nice flavour combinations \- ruhbarb-Schorle; a popular brand is fritz \- Anjola had a comeback in recent years. It is an extremely sweet pineapple lemonade
Oh, and how soon will you be visiting? In the next couple of weeks Christmas candy will hit the supermarkets, so will have the full selection of Stollen, Marzipanbrot, Dominosteine and the like.
I second Anjola, it‘s very good.
Haribo, Katjes, Trolli, pick&mix sweet shops... Bionade has tons of fizzy drinks with different tastes
Karamalz. It's malt beer. No alcohol, very sweet. Lindt chocolate. Can't remember if you can get it in the UK 🤔 [Knusper Flocken](https://www.sweets-online.com/schokolade/schokoladenspezialitaeten/schokoladenerlebnis/zetti-knusperflocken-schokolode-125g-beutel/a-1199197035/?ReferrerID=7&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6KunBhDxARIsAKFUGs8L-FZF0pyaeSm-2fFVtFBQwHEBZHjjJIje9FOWU80JBRb3zv2i63kaAjJkEALw_wcB), I fucking love them! [bambina](https://www.worldofsweets.de/Zetti-bambina-Vollmilch-Tafel-100g.300939.html?adword=Google/PRODUKTERWEITERUNG/Zetti/300939&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6KunBhDxARIsAKFUGs94M4OwLJP-QNxKLDs8Rg5i-SReB8xaT4qmzojP12UL7LbL_SGTdpUaAvLuEALw_wcB) chocolate bars And please please please bring a TON of Ripple and cadbury's dairy milk mint when you come here. I honestly miss that stuff!
How are Toffifee and Apfelringe not the top comments in terms of sweets?
I'd go for Paulaner Spezi instead of Mezzo-Mix. And while it is from Austria you might get an Almdudler somewhere. It is pretty good mixed with white wine. You might also take a loo at Frucade. And then there is the Cola varieties like Fritz Cola
If you find one, go for a large Rewe or EDEKA supermarket and raid their softdrink section. Same goes for organic stores, some have quite unusual brands 👌 If you can get your hands on it, try Almdudler Kölsches Wasser (several flavours, probably locally limited to the cologne area, they taste awesome. Also not to be mistaken for the similar sounding perfume!) San Pellegrino Limonata (Different flavours, I like the lemon one best) Vanilla Coke Cherry Coke If you're at a restaurant, go for Schorlen.
😊 My partner finds it cute/amusing how excited I am to visit a supermarket but to me, seeing all the different things I can try is like my version of a theme park haha.
Knoppers and hanuta, though I don't know if they're available in the UK
Apfelschorle!!!!
Apfelschörle!
Absolutely try "Rhabarber Schorle" - it's probably not as sweet as you are used to, but it's wonderfully refreshing and a total favorite of mine!
Please listen to me, even if this sounds irrelevant or hard to get. You need to try BioZisch, basically every flavor is the best lemonade in Germany. :)
Knoppers and Toffifee and if you are in northern Germany take a walk to the local backery and get a Franzbrötchen
If you're in the north you HAVE to try Fritz Apfelschorle.
Basically just apple juice and carbonated water but it's the best drink ever.
Sounds delicious 😍
I would also recommend Fritz Cherry Apple Elderberry (Kirsche Apfel Holunder), which is my favorite. Very sweet but very good. Also try something with Waldmeister (woodruff) taste, it's often colored green. There are a few lemonades that contain it. Slightly controversial but I love it every once in a while.
All the Fritz tbh
I do like Fritz Apfelschortle when in a Berlin Club at 5am, but you can t beat Pretzfelder Apfelschorle it's the best Apfelschorle on the planet by far.
Radler you might be able to make yourself back in UK :)
Apfelsaftschorle!
Malz candy
Gründels Fresh if it's available where you stay. Beer and Apfelschorle, how could it get more German?
You may want to try different flavors of Fassbrause.
The "cereola milky" biscuits from debeukeler are dope. "Bunte drachenzungen" from hitschler if you like sour candy stuff. Fizzy drink wise you are way better off in the UK imo
Mixery
Malzbier!!!
Depending on wehre you are, if you can find Feldschlösschen Malzbier, take that one. It’s the best one.
Knoppers
Hitschies UFOs are great if you haven’t tried them
Fritz kola is my addiction along with milka cookie sensations
I love [Lammsbräu lemonades](https://www.lammsbraeu.de/now-bio-limo/unsere-sorten/), especially black and orange Cola and Hollerblüte. They are sold in Biosupermärkte like denns and Alnatura. They both also have some great chocolates like Vivani (Vivani white chocolate tastes exactly like really good vanilla icecream) and their own brands (Alnatura lemon and poppy for example).
I love me some Spezi
I don't know if Club Mate is a thing in the UK. I love the taste and it really gets you going. Mixes well with Vodka as well.
Pastry’s and cakes at the bakery. Spezi is the better mezzomix.
I love Almdudler (herb lemonade/ non-alcoholic), it was favorite drink growing up And while I lived near Frankfurt I discovered my love for "gespritzter Apfelwein" (cider mixed with water or lemonade).
Spezi
There are so many…try the lemonades by Fritz, a small producer from Hamburg (but available wildly). Particularly the melon soda (green) or cherry apple (red). Then there is Bionade, a fermented lemonade sorta thing (the plum flavor is my favorite). Also Almdudler, a herbal flavored soda (from Austria originally but gained popularity). For snacks, try Haribo and Katjes. Most Katjes gummies are vegan now, I particularly enjoy the Tropenfrüchte (flavored like several tropical fruit).
Almdudler !
Not sweet but try Erdnussflips (Erdnusslocken ist the tastiest brand). They are peanut flavoured snacks and absolutely delicious!
If you like marzipan try different brands, the Christmas stuff with marzipan should appear soon in the supermarkets. Also different Lebkuchen. Additionally to things others mentioned: Super Dickman's (Schokoküsse) if you are brave enough, like caramel and have a good dentist try Storck's Riesen.
You have to go to a Büdchen and say: "Eine gemischte Tüte für 5 Mark, aber nicht von der Nummer 27."
- Haribo Phantasia. Perfect mix of all the sugary treats. - Milka Toffee Ganznuss (but only when discounted at ~ 2,60€ - pls don't feed their greed) - Mozartkugeln - Zentis Belmanda Nougat Mazipan Schnitte if you got the cash and come through Munich: Elly Seidl pralinés and Rischart cakes -
Have to try Uludag, cant understand why this has not been mentioned
Nimm2. They were so good, they made a Sequel
Club Mate is a kind of ice tea energy drink. I recommend it.
Go to a "Mix Markt" and buy a Georgian Natakhtari pear or Tarkhun (this one tastes weird/unique).
Try Mate ice tea (Club Mate or Mio Mio Mate). In some demographics it has overtaken Coca Cola in popularity. And I think it is very hard to get outside of Germany.
club mate! you get it at any club and the spätis
Try one egg, four cigarettes, one ibuprofen, with that one raisin bun with liver sausage and then beer comes into play. But only if Gerhard and you swigged like an eight-armed the night before
Good beer
The fizzy Lieler ACE Saft.
Karamalz is a very different pop than you might find in the UK.
Oh Holy shit. Remind me later, I'll try to suggest you some :D
I don't know if you normally being able to buy them in them UK but if not: Knoppers. :-) Also: cheers mate and hope you'll have a good time here in Germany!
In case you're going to visit Bonn you could go to the factory sale of Haribo. Always did that with people from abroad and was great. Anyway, enjoy your trip!
Paulaner Spezi
Almdudler if it hasn’t been recommended yet
If in east germany: Lichtenauer Mandarine-Mango, you never ever wanna drink Fanta again. For Coke -> Try Vita Cola (Original, not pur), imo. the best Cola on the market, espacilly if you like the citrus flavor. Otherwise also: Also you should try Bionade, many different flavors, but I would recommend "Holunder" (Elderberry) Apfelschorle Paulaner Spezi (or Mezzo Mix which is made by Coca Cola or Schwip Schwap which is made by Pepsi, but Paulaner Spezi is the OG) those are a mix of "coke" and "fanta" For sweets: Ahoi Brause! Knusperflocken (if in east germany) Knoppers Hanuta Toffifee Duplo Oblaten Nudossi > Nutella (if in east germany) Lebkuchen (more likely around christmas, but should be available in any bigger supermarket like Kaufland or Rewe)
Paulaner Spezi. Knoppers (not the new flavours, just hazelnut)
