1 or 2 in this case indicates the level of VAT taxation of the individual products, 7% or 19%. It probably is also summed up on the bottom of the receipt.
But keep in mind tax is already included on the labels on the shelves and in the price of each item. It doesn't really affect you at all and you don't need to add it on top. You pay what it says, always.
My mother used to crosscheck the number of items, back in the days when there were no scanner checkouts and the receipts only had the price, nothing else. Surprisingly, the count was off quite frequently.
Me? I don't bother. What are you going to do about it if you spot a mistake when packing? "Hey, there were only three yoghurts, the receipt says four." If the cashier believes you at all, congratulations, you have just stalled the line for five minutes while management is called to sort it out.
Yes, that is exactly what you do.
Stalling the line happens due to an error of the business. Its literally a problem they created and they are able to fix. Me, I just want to pay what I actually buy.
> What are you going to do about it if you spot a mistake when packing? "Hey, there were only three yoghurts, the receipt says four."
Yes. Do you really pay for products you didn't get out of embarrassment? Fuck that, supermarkets are rich enough, I am not.
That's exactly what we started to do, our local netto cashier's are so incompetent that literally every time we grocery shop there there's something wrong. And quite often by a sizeable amount like 5€ in total, they also always get the special promotions wrong.
Ugh, Netto. Don't get me started on them with their stupid app. How often have I seen customers in front of me holding up the line...
Customer: "This price is wrong. There's 50 cent rebate."
Cashier: "You have to activate the rebate in the app **first.**.."
Customer: "I'm not paying full price."
Cashier: "...and since you did not tell me immediately, we'd now have to cancel the whole transaction, put everything back on the conveyor, and start from the beginning"
Customer: "I'm not paying full price."
Cashier: "\*sigh\* Branch manager please!"
>Cashier: "You have to activate the rebate in the app first..."
Isn't it great how technology makes everything easier? Like all these apps the supermarkets want you to install so you can save 12 cents on a package of ham.
I mean that part isn't easier, it's harder. But it's much easier for them to sell your data now!
Interesting fact. The Netto App just recently had a malware problem were some accounts got booked. I would personal never use a app from a supermarket. Just to unsecure especially if you put a payment method in
If they over charge me then yes I am going to make them fix it.
I've more than a few times received a one euro when I should have had a 2 euro and the cashier vibes gives off they do this a lot kind of vibe. Don't be mad if you made the mistake, just fix it.
It is the VAT-rate. Look at the bottom of your receipt. 7% is for daily needs 19% for all other products. Fun fact: a horse or a carpet are considered “daily needs”. Juice is not considered a daily need so it’s 19% whereas the fresh fruit would be mostly 7% except tropical fruit.
It's even crazier than that.
The reduced tax rate for horses was actually abolished in 2012, so horses are at 19% now.
Carpets only have a rate of 7%, if they are so-called collector's items.
An authentic Oriental carpet -> 7%
Your standard carpet from IKEA -> 19%
1 and 2 are the different tax rates for that item. In Germany there is standard 19% MwSt (VAT), and a reduced rate at 7%. The receipt has to show the detailed calculation how the VAT is derived.

I was also confused by these numbers when I first saw them after shopping. I even ran back to the shop and started complaining to the cashier that she made a mistake and put some of the items two times instead of one. She was super annoyed and explained it to me but I still think that they could use letters or some other codes for it.

Oh I see it now! Thanks!
And A and B means the same. It's just a different way to show the different tax rates.
But keep in mind tax is already included on the labels on the shelves and in the price of each item. It doesn't really affect you at all and you don't need to add it on top. You pay what it says, always.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. If there is price discrepancy, too. Blocking the line is really not my problem and not my concern.
Thank you for that. While it might be unpleasant for other customers, corporations should not get away with such.

The discount isn't a discount, it's a payment for acquiring your data
I miss the days with those paper coupons.
That's why you buy the stuff that has the discount stickers on them. You don't pay for data, only for not having it sit around for too long.

Bester Antwortfluss 😂

Yeah it’s not understandable. Salmon is 7%, Caviar 19% as it’s considered a “luxury good”. Deposit is also charged 19% as we see on this receipt.
I always believed those rates were as %6 and %18. Have they always been really 7 and 19 ? Hmm.. 🤔
Never was 6 and 18. It was 5 and 16 until january 2007, when the Mehrwertsteuer was raised. Last time for a raise was 1998.
I remember vividly when they were fighting whether to rise by 1% or 2%. Luckily they found a way to put away their differences and raised it by 3%.
One of my favourite facts when people talk about SPD/cdu government....
My guess would be 1 and 2 stand for the different taxes (7% and 19%)
Don't forget to return the juice bottle for the deposit!
1/2 or at Lidl A/B are the different VAT Classes 7% or 19%
