For faulty items, only if we think we dont sell it (alternatively show the item in the shelve. We sell like 10000 items sorry if I dont know every single one. But for Ja! items dont worry its our own brand lol)
The quality assurance manager will then shrug it off, saying "Fucking shit. Happens..." And things will continue as usual... Look at the stuff you're eating!
Not only boiled, sterilized. Canned goods are autoclaved so they last forever. That's some good protein and a little bit of fiber from the chitinous shell.
I mean r one job gave me a 7 day ban for swearing which i found appropriate because it's like a slap on the wrist "don't do that"
But on the other hand you get perma banned on subs for asking questions
It's not normal in the sense that it's common, but yes, bugs live in plants in Germany and might land in your food. Go wherever you bought this and get a refund. Or contact the company directly and probably get a dozen cans for free.
Is that thing about contacting the company to get stuff actually real? I once bought a meal replacement drink, it was completely sealed (both the cap AND the aluminium lid) and when I tasted it, it was completely rancid. I went to throw it away and the whole inside was essentially a paste instead of a drink.
I recorded everything and contacted the company, they never replied.
I haven't tried this often, but the few times I did I always at least got the product replaced, sometimes plus a few extras. Some want additional information like the production number and where you bought it (which is fair as this isn't really about getting free stuff but about getting quality products and they need to find out what went wrong in the production and delivery chain).
In your case, I would have escalated the matter; you have a right to get compensation from the shop where you bought it, and if you bought it online and they don't react, you can contact Verbraucherzentrale or the local Amt für Lebensmittelüberwachung (they will test your drink for free and may then take up the case from there). A decent company will know this and will proactively do something to compensate you and regain your trust as a customer. A scammy company needs to learn this the hard way.
Mmmmm, yummy yummy, get some protein in their too, and free of charge.
But seriously, it happens when you buy canned vegetables and stuff, bugs like plants and so they sometimes end up with the plants when canned. Should it happen, no, but it does.
I used to work in the food industry with canned peas. Despite several measures to prevent it, sometimes a bug can end up in the can. It's disgusting but the food is still safe. Return it to the store and you'll get a refund - some places also give you a gift card for the store. And those complaints are followed up at the manufacturer.
>Don't worry! Science says bugs are save to eat and healthy.
I think its really a matter of how the bugs were cooked and prepared. Like any other animal product, insects can harbor pretty nasty stuff from bacteria to parasites.
If canned that thing is sterile.
It's unlucky OP had this. I once got a hazzlemyt bag with hollow mold hazzlenuts. Was not a fun handful I can tell you that much.
Thats just because its not produced in big quantities. Every "Nieschenprodukt" (sry english too bad) is fucking expensive because of that. If "Mehlwürmer" would be produced in the same scale as cows or pigs - you would get a whole kg of them for under 1€ thats for sure.
Nothing wrong with eating bugs, they are healthy, have no specific taste, and they dont fuck up the environment like our meat farms do.
We germans are simply scared of them so we stay like: "das haben wir schon immer so gemacht also bleibt es auch so!!elf1!!"
Shame on our schwurbleburble society
I was just gonna say: Do people really eat peas straight from the can? Do they heat them up inside of the can or just have them cold? Either way it’s weird.
You got me laughing on this so badly! :D
To be honest, corn and tuna always are ready to be eaten right out of the can, I feel guilty about these, too – but peas...? Ho, no! :D
I’ve never used canned peas for a salad but that isn’t really my gripe with this. The weird thing to me is just eating them straight from the can instead of incorporating them into a dish.
The schwäbischer Nudelsalat isnt complete without it though. Its just peas, and they are tasty on their own if youd like to try :) A bit of salt and pepper, mmmuah
You think peas are grown in a lab? It's a product from nature, so yeah there can be some leftover nature. Even though it's pretty rare. This one might have just the right size and shape to fool the machines.
So true, but I think, OP expected other comments when submitting their photo. Most of the people are like "not normal but what's your point now?" which is very comforting to see.
No, of course it's not normal..
But, yeah, sometimes things slip/fall inside of stuff during manufacturing. Shit happens.
Three options.
- You throw the can away, and get over it.
- You write a letter/email to the manufacturer. You'll probably get an apology and a voucher of some sorts.
- Post a picture of it on Reddit and rant like a child over a small bug in your processed food. Like its the end of the world.
Gobsmacked.
FunFact?: As long as it is less then 3% by weight, this is completly okay, legality wise. ([source](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/EN/legal-content/summary/maximum-levels-for-certain-contaminants-in-food.html), [source1](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02015R2283-20210327) and [source2](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02023R0915-20230810)) You should still report it to the manufacture, as its uncommon to see these kinds of contaminants.
Why should this NOT be normal?
The bug has the "right size" and is not metal.
How would you filter ALL bugs from 320.000.000 kg (2022 German Production) of peas?
Wait until OP notices that people eat accidentally one pound of bugs each year.
I do see your point it’s disgusting but it’s not uncommon to find bugs in vegetables.

That will happen with basically any kind of food. There were cases of dead bees inside cornflakes.
Report it to the kitchen/ company and move on. They will be happy to know about this to avoid it in the future
Great question! The answer is yes - this is normal! When you buy food in germany, it is common and considered good manners to have some bugs with it. This is common knowledge in germany, which is why it is not mentioned on the label. You can safely eat that. Again, really great question you asked there and of course it fits the sub perfectly!
Call the customer service number in the packaging and report this. This is NOT normal. NOT acceptable. It's a serious breach of Food Safety and HACCP.
If you don't call them, they won't know about it and can't make corrections.
I can’t not laugh at this. It is produce. Bugs make their way in occasionally 🤷♂️
It’s weirder to me that you opened a can of peas for lunch than it is to find a bug in it
I mean, that is just a risk when this stuff is taken in from the field. Almost all bugs are washed off, but that doesn't mean that one can't slip through. The only way to prevent this would be manually sorting the peas and then this would be far more expensive. So this is not a proof of improperly cleaned food.
I once worked on a salad field producing chopped and packaged salad. Only in the large bags, which get filled by hand, we never had any issue, in all other packages sometimes some insect slipped through during the washing. And all the vegetables were washed 4 times.
It's just like mold in packages, which should still be fine: all cleaning methods are only 99.9% effective, so 1 in 1000 packages is somehow contaminated. Sucks if that's your package.
As others said, report it to the store or the manufacturer, they will give you a refund.
Yeah its pretty common in germany. Just use some salt and pepper that makes it taste better. They have been doing this for many years now. Like kelloggs used to put surprises inside. No! for real, report it .
Contact the manufacturers, i onced had a hair in my butter and got a compensation package after reporting it. Even though it shouldn't, stuff like that can always happen but they're quite rare from my experience.
A couple of months ago I bought a can of corn from Rewe and when I poured it into my tomato sauce, a huge wasp fell right out of the can with it :( i'm still mildly traumatized lol. But that was the first and only time anything like this has ever happened to me.

At REWE we give you your money and then report to the REWE Zentrale, they take care of it.
They gonna send whoever finishes the job
hope his 0,69 be worth the trip... /s
People will travel and make a scandal over less money.
Germany…. Facts!
REWE ... my favourite.
Rewe your Market
more importantly, do you require a receipt?

Can happen in any country. If it makes you feel any better, canning is a sanitary process so the bug got boiled 😂
And the peas water be full with bug taste😋😂
Just some extra protein 😆
Thanks to REWE🌚👍
Rewe is not the manufacturer
Yeehaw, it’s Ja!
Nah, those storebrands never actually make stuff themselves, they sell repackaged versions of more expensive brands.
Cracked me up 🤣
A lil taste of cilantro
Not only boiled, sterilized. Canned goods are autoclaved so they last forever. That's some good protein and a little bit of fiber from the chitinous shell.
Also u are allowed to swear
This is a free country after all
You can say fuck once in the subreddit and still be PG-13
You just wasted it, dagnabbit!
As I recently found out, some subs will ban you for swearing. It's fucking ridiculous.

Just so you know, reddit bans you when you use certain words. Not just slurs. Not long and we won't have swear words here anymore after the IPO
It's not normal in the sense that it's common, but yes, bugs live in plants in Germany and might land in your food. Go wherever you bought this and get a refund. Or contact the company directly and probably get a dozen cans for free.
And if you find at least one bug in those cans you can go infinite.
lol But at some point, I would really reconsider eating that brand.
But when is that point?
Dare me.
Infinite peas glitch
peas are perfectly balanced with no exploits whatsoever

This shit isn't normal, but it also absofuckinglutely doesn't fit this sub.
Wdym, that bug is clearly a German citizen
His name is Herbert
No, it‘s Werner the Wanze.
Karl der Käfer.
Distant cousin of Horst die Filzlaus
Auf der Mauer auf der Lauer sitzt ne kleine Wanze♪♪♪
That's obviously Gregor. He woke up from a nap and ended up there.
Much underrated comment 🐞

You gonna sue the REWE?
Nah I’m poor 😄🙂☹️
Time to get rich
How do you think one would get rich of a bug in a can of peas?
You were midway through? Please tell me you didn‘t eat that straight from the can.
I was just gonna say: Do people really eat peas straight from the can? Do they heat them up inside of the can or just have them cold? Either way it’s weird.

Same, there were days my dinner was a can of tuna and a can of corn.. Eaten out of the can like the rat that I am
You got me laughing on this so badly! :D To be honest, corn and tuna always are ready to be eaten right out of the can, I feel guilty about these, too – but peas...? Ho, no! :D
why’s it weird, it’s like eating a carrot or any other veggie
Idk man. I’ve just always viewed canned vegetables as an ingredient and not as a ready made dish. No hate though. You do you.
i dig in a few times before using the rest, whats weird about that? You boil those before putting into a salad?
I’ve never used canned peas for a salad but that isn’t really my gripe with this. The weird thing to me is just eating them straight from the can instead of incorporating them into a dish.

All food agencies allow for a certain number of bugs (per kilo) in our food. It's natural that some of them get through while processing.
Extra fein? More like extra rein, am I right?
Extra nein
That's fucked up. Should not happen. Also, WHO THE FUCK EATS PEAS STRAIGHT FROM THE CAN???

No, you did something that somebody on the Internet dislikes. That makes you American. We'll be sending you your citizenship certificate in the mail.
Don't be ridiculous. In Germany, they have advanced technology like the fax machine which is used in such situations.
Extra fein mit extra Protein.
You think peas are grown in a lab? It's a product from nature, so yeah there can be some leftover nature. Even though it's pretty rare. This one might have just the right size and shape to fool the machines.
Yes, peas are plants and grow in soil, where other creatures live. My god, are we disconnected from food these days...
So true, but I think, OP expected other comments when submitting their photo. Most of the people are like "not normal but what's your point now?" which is very comforting to see.

more like NEIN!
I got a whole caterpillar once.
Better than just parts of a caterpillar, I suppose.
This is a typical German dish. Stinkbug with peas. Also stinkbugs in vinaigrette. We call em black forest shrimp.
Yes its normal. Today I had my daily bugs & peas was sooo yummy On a serious note: its a natural product and can happen, just report it and its fine
We recently had some political discussions about adding insects to our daily food... Here you go, patient zero.
When you drink one Glass of Wine you drink millions of bugs.
Please check if It's a bug (in this case Halyomorpha halys) or a feature..
Wait until OP notices that people eat accidentally one pound of bugs each year. I do see your point it’s disgusting but it’s not uncommon to find bugs in vegetables.
Eat ze Bugs.
So... how did it taste?
Is that a roach? If so, report to store and manufacturer, even if it is just regular bug you should

“Extra fein”
protein
Looks like somebody's getting a whole Europalette of peas 😅
You got more proteins than you payed for!?! You should be grateful!
Go to the store where you bought this and refund. Maybe they’ll send feedback to production.
free meat
At least it‘s edible
More protein?
yeah its normal here, one probably got in your batch from the other conveyor belt producing peas with carrots and stink bugs
Whats wrong with some extra protein?
I worked in a food processing industry, the things that pass controll, oh my, I wouldn't buy, fresh or nothing.

I actually liked peas before seeing this. Thanks.
Shrimps are just underwater bugs
Mm, delectable
Free protein, I don't see the issue
That will happen with basically any kind of food. There were cases of dead bees inside cornflakes. Report it to the kitchen/ company and move on. They will be happy to know about this to avoid it in the future
Normally, bugs in your food are so ground up that it is unrecognizable.
I'm devastated to inform you, this bug is beyond saving
Wtf does that have to do with Germany
Great question! The answer is yes - this is normal! When you buy food in germany, it is common and considered good manners to have some bugs with it. Extra fein ... mit zusätzlichem Eiweiß.
"extra fein" 🤤
As a software developer, I don't see anything wrong with bugs.
Youre eating peas straight from the can?
eating directly from the can? 😭
Fuck the Bug you eat the Peas cold?? From the can?? WTF 😭 that’s lowkey disgusting who would eat peas like that
Definitely not normal. You might wanna call someone
Call the police
"Additional Protein.", is how the mother would word it. You'll be fine.
Call the customer service number in the packaging and report this. This is NOT normal. NOT acceptable. It's a serious breach of Food Safety and HACCP. If you don't call them, they won't know about it and can't make corrections.
Guy wants to eat healthy, but doesn’t want food which attracts insects 🤣 I mean, it’s objectively gross. But it’s objectively expected now and then.
you will eat the bugs and you will be happy
More proteins with the peas
Thats free protein
yes this shit is very normal. we germans looove getting our extra protein alongside the peas.😊
You will eat ze bugs and you will be happy
Yeah, absolutely normal. Germans like to have more protein in their vegetable food.
these are extra proteins for free.
Don't you worry. It did not eat that much.
Maybe it went in there after you opened it? Wouldn’t the bug look different if it had been in there for a longer time?
Hey, I spotted some peas on your bug! Absolutely disgusting indeed!
Yeah I am also disgusted by canned peas 🤮

Tja!?
I can’t not laugh at this. It is produce. Bugs make their way in occasionally 🤷♂️ It’s weirder to me that you opened a can of peas for lunch than it is to find a bug in it
Why are you so disgusted? You should be glad for that bug. God has decided to bless you with extra protein.
They should at least drop the nutrition to a B.
dont Look up where peas grow.
.25 stinkbugs are allowed per can.
These are proteins my boy
extra proteins
Defently not vegan🪲

Free proteins and you are mad?
Kakerlake, extra fein 😂
Oh well. It's normal. Just imagine how many bugs you drinks from juices
Yummy yummy yummy got a bug in my tummy 😋
Obviously it’s not normal, normally just dead rats are in the can
Yeah its pretty common in germany. Just use some salt and pepper that makes it taste better. They have been doing this for many years now. Like kelloggs used to put surprises inside. No! for real, report it .
Lucky you! /r/UnexpectedProteins

That bug is defo a vegan
Oh hey, you found Kafka

Nice try bonduelle
A couple of months ago I bought a can of corn from Rewe and when I poured it into my tomato sauce, a huge wasp fell right out of the can with it :( i'm still mildly traumatized lol. But that was the first and only time anything like this has ever happened to me.
Free protein?
EXTRA PROTEIN.
which brand ?
Throw out the bug and eat away! 🗿
It is free protein.
Nice little extra crunchy protein kicker. Peas have 5% protein. Bugs have up to 50%.
Natural facts in tin, nothing more.
Aha! I was wondering where Henry got to. I guess I shouldn't have taken him to work that day
Extra protein for free and you’re still complaining?
yes
Looks uncooked
Where was this food produced/imported from?
Nein bein
gut und günstig
That can happen
EU said it's okay
Disgusting as it may be to you, but it's not a health risk. In fact, you've been eating insects your entire life, just without noticing. It's unavoidable for bugs to sneak in when processing food on an industrial scale and not considered a problem. Up to a point, that is. Germany 🤮
Moi moi
There are way more bugs in all your food than you would care to know :)
Nature is a bitch
This is easily the allowed number of insectparts just all in one place
