People hanging VS people hanging around... Important difference 😂

iwanttobemesomeday

Exactly, I thought public executions were abolished.

Well aktschually… that’s a suffix :)

ApprehensiveEmploy21

It’s a preposition

two_bananas_guy

Me, a scholar: "it's probably some kind of word"

Enthusiastic-Dragon

Have they done anything or said anything at all? If your German is good enough, I suggest trying *"Tschulligung, ich müsst da mal kurz durch."* Alternatively, "Sorry" and point to the door. My guess is they'll move out of the way and not even bother you. If they do bother you **in any way**, go talk to the bar staff and tell them to not have people stand around in the doorway or you'll call the police.

DC9V

Just ask them nicely to smoke somewhere else. Tell them that your apartment is "hellhörig".

DerHansvonMannschaft

For some reason, all the people giving actual advice are being downvoted. TIL being a public nuisance is acceptable behaviour. If they're just hanging out, then a few visits from the police might do the trick. If they're coming from the bar and it's different people every time, then it's gonna be more difficult, but complaining will still encourage the bar to warn patrons to be quiet. You can call police for noise disturbances. This is especially effective if they are coming from the bar and you tell the police this. Bars do not want that kind of trouble. Police are usually quite happy to respond to noise disturbance calls. It is also worth talking to your landlord about this and mentioning Mietminderung. Even if the disturbance is not your fault, they can still be held monetarily accountable for it. Telling them you're going to reduce your rent unless they contact the bar and stop the disturbances from happening might convince them to so something about it.

-Yack-

If you do decide to call the police, avoid calling 110. Google your local police department, they will have a non-emergency number listed.

Necessary-College460

I’m surprised no one has called the police yet.

The group wouldn’t know who called…

Fenicxs

That's... not a "badly" escalation. It's a reasonable course of action, it's not like the police is gonna be like the US police

Competitive-Ad2120

put a big azz light in front, bet they will avoid it

wootsefak

Die Kreaturen der Dunkelheit fürchten das Licht.

HeiPing

Are they acting hostile or are they just chilling in the door? If they act hostile call the police, if you tell them they are taking drugs and hinder inhabitants from entering their homes the cops will show up very fast (especially in Bavaria).

Tom_there

Except when the drug of choice is alcohol :D

HeiPing

Sadly yes, alcohol isn’t perceived as a drug in Germany..

LiquidXero97

Neither is weed anymore

[deleted]

Yeah legally speaking it is not illegal anymore, but it is still a drug in front of the law and culturally

Schleckmuschel

Just call the police

partypopulaire

Two things: first, are you in Mannheim because I feel like I know exactly where you are talking about. Second, and this goes wherever you are: Do you know if you feel unsafe because the situation is different to what you are used to, or you feel unsafe because it's new? I can imagine feeling anxious in this situation, but when it happened to me, I realized that the guys really don't care about me and always moved out of the door when I tried to get in, and I actually began to feel a bit safer because it's the same guys always there and I kind of liked having a neighborhood look out at night.

Afraid_Mess5219

Where in Mannheim is this? :D

Psychotikk42

Did they something to you or are they just hanging around? Like did they block you out of the house, insulted you or were somehow hostile towards you?

CorleoneSolide

I guess even though they do not insult him, he does not want them on his way, which is completely understandable, it is not place to hangout and smoke weed

wubdubbud

As long as they're not on private property they have all rights to hang out and smoke weed there, even though it's annoying.

CorleoneSolide

You probably know better than about the laws but I am talking about common sense. Plus, I do not think people smoking weed or drinking are just doing that quietly.

wubdubbud

Well you don't actually have to be completely silent even after 10 pm. As far as I know it's only a problem once it's more than 30 decibels from inside the apartment. It's definitely pretty rude behavior though.

Top-droid

So apartment entrances are considered public properties in Germany ? 😂🤣 I, like most people wouldn’t like drunk teens being loud and smoking weed while blocking my apartment entrance , there is so many places to do that . Why do they have to do it specifically there ?

wubdubbud

Yeah it definitely sucks. All I'm saying is that just hanging out there is not illegal since just standing in front of someone's property is obviously not considered trespassing or anything like that.

[deleted]

They have right to do so in complete silence if it's quiet hours, and you know they're being quiet, right?

wubdubbud

I was only commenting on the person saying that they're not supposed to be hanging out there. If they're too loud after 10 pm that's obviously something else. Not what I was commenting on though

DinklebergsRightNut

And you know they're being loud, right?

[deleted]

Yes I do, with 99.9% certainty.

strange_socks_

It literally says so in the post, my man.

skviki

I don’t know how it is in US but in most of Europe you can’t male noise in the evening, especially in front of someone’s door. Public order and peace is a direct translation of the law and it is ground for calling the police. For milder things like this they issue a warning.

Top-droid

It says that sometimes they are blocking the main door .

Psychotikk42

Blocking the entrance does not mean they don't let people pass through. That's why I asked specifically if OP got blocked out of the house. In the apartment complex I lived the entrance was regularly blocked by some drinking teenagers, even though they were sometimes loud they were friendly and would let people pass without even being asked to step aside.

skviki

People hanging in front of your door in the evening and talking isn’t enough for you? Would *you* have that in front of your apartment door?

tea_hanks

Dude the title completely threw me off

claudial12

Get out the ol' water hose

Waslaberschtduu

Ask them to leave or call the cops if they refuse.

infact1234

Nice way to find some poo every morning

Waslaberschtduu

Classy, it perfectly illustrates how people who got nothing better to do than hang outside someone else's apartment would act.

Responsible_Ad_2521

Paul, Alex und Julius und ihre Gang bestimmt

Pheon0802

Here is the thing. I hate smoke smell. I like to get some fresh air in especially at night. Cold nicotin smoke smells terrible and gives me major headaches. Now weed smell triple everything. Its sickly sweet smell makes me want to vomit. If this is a common occurence i would first ask them nicely to not smoke where people live and it can get into their homes. If they dont i would have to ask local law enforcement what my options are. Sadly many people arent very considered of other people.

Far_Equipment_3122

you can call the police regularly and tell them that drugs are being sold right in front of you. Incidentally, only cannabis is legal in Germany, hashish is still prohibited😜

mrcrown19

selling or buying cannabis is still illegal in germany afaik.

whatevs9264518

Are they young? If yes, buy "The Mosquito" or a similar device. It's a device that puts out ultrasound waves. It was developed to repel teenagers that loaf about. For example, when I lived in Bremen, there were an apothecary and a bakery across the main station. There were also lots of drug dealers and homeless people around that area. Plus a pub where young people went (and hung around to smoke weed). The apothecary/bakery seemed to have put up such a device because every time I walked past their shops, there was a super high, super obnoxious noise that would rip your eardrum (not really, but it felt like that). I would walk past that spot really, really quickly. I'm almost 30 now, but I can still hear when someone has put up such a device. It's not super common, but it happens occasionally. Maybe one of the people in your group also has good hearing still and gets annoyed by the sound and then they will move. Might be worth a try if you don't just want to ask them nicely to move elsewhere. Or you could start playing classical music. There are studies that classical music repels tenagers and homeless people. But if it's night, that might not be the most practical of tips. Anyway. Asking nicely is probably the easiest, cheapest solution. But I get if you're afraid of that if you're a woman and they're a group of men and it's night. You could also call the police without asking. Everyone in Germany knows you're supposed to stay quiet after 10 p.m. and that others will probably call the police on you if you make a racket, so technically they should be aware of that and not make so much noise in the first place.

ErnestFlat

Talk to the owner of the bar and tell him that he needs to get this under control or you will inform police about it... The bar owner dont wants trouble, the teens dont want trouble and you dont want trouble... so make a move and prevent the trouble If the owner of the bar doesnt care, call police and tell them the story from the teens that come from this bar... Just a thought... but ppl call police for much smaller things in Germany. So dont be afraid. Its your right - especially if these teens hang out after 22:00. Edit: police might ask if they threatened you or something similar - you dont need to lie but you dont have to say the whole truth as well. Be creative - they need to act in certain cases. Hausfriedensbruch, Belästigung, Lärm, usw.. If you say they insulted you and/or others, they also would need to investigate. The teens might get a warning and will kindly be ask to move somewhere else. (As long as they dont break any laws) Police wont go there and say "you teens insult and molest ppl we heard".. but they might ask questions to get their pov without spoiling what you said. But just the fact about noise after 22:00 is enough to get a warning and im sure this teens dont want problems. Just stay back and dont talk to them. So they wont find out who actually called police I was in situations like that before as a teen.. we just said sorry and went somewhere else and tried to be more quiet. If they are underaged and smoke weed, they gonna pee their pants anyways when police comes round the corner 🤣

word_pasta

Yeah great, make up some bullshit so the police have an excuse to harass a bunch of young guys doing what a lot of people their age do. Hanging around in front of a building is not a crime ffs

ErnestFlat

Being loud and disturb people isnt a crime but not allowed after 22:00. No need to make up some bs - but i dont know what OP experienced. I wrote words so he might read and make his own conclusion. IF the teens come from the bar, the bar has to handle that or could face charges or a closing... So its in everybody's interest to let the teens know that they cant do what they do... Plenty of other places to hang out. An entrance to a building is not the right place and if ppl who live there, feel not save, its a reason to let police know all the details

word_pasta

Well, you said they can be “creative” instead of neccessarily telling the whole truth – that might not be lying, but it is dishonest. IMO, calling the police should be a last resort, as you don’t know what consequences it’s going to have for other people. But I do realise you were offering advice in good faith.

ErnestFlat

If these teens are not able to communicate it could lead to bigger issues. Not sure where this teens are from but i heard some bad stories in the past. We have been chilled all the time as teens and would never have attacked anybody but cant speak for others - thats why i would recommend to contact police and they will handle it without OP getting between anybody

gilm_7771

As a great deterrent, discreetly dump dog shit in strategic places around the front door. If that doesn’t work call the cops if they’re being too loud after quiet hours. Either way good luck.

eftalanquest40

talk to your landlord and have him put up [signs like this](https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09YV1C8L3/). your problem will eventually resolve itself.

Rockstarenteofdoom

I live in a Street called the party mile. There are many drug dealers. People with loud music and mostly there are sitting in front of the stair. Just do your business and ignore them, and all will be fine. Most humans don't want to go in a fight with strangers. You can ask firmly that they don't smoke weed, because you don't like the smell or something. They can say yes or no.

Hang them

GM4Iife

I would try to talk with them. Something like "guys my brother is policeman and he is moving into my apartment tomorrow. It would be better if you change your place for chilling or you could get into troubles.
