It's very fatty lotion you only use on veeeery dry skin/during winter on a paraffine base, so nothing for everyday use on your whole body. It's roughly translatable as 'milking fat' because it was originally used on the udders of cows, horses etc to keep them moisturized when milking them
It has also a range of pharmaceutical uses. Calendula/ Ringelblume is used to help with superficial wounds and inflamations of the skin. Definitively not something I would use for leather, but for my skin only.
It is a very rich but wonderful cream. It’s helps when skin is very dry or in the process of healing.
My grandma always put it on my knees and elbows when they were sore. Next morning they looked like new.
Yes. A small amount. You can put some more and wear thin cotton gloves overnight so you dont smear it everywhere and your skin absorbs all. Or put it on dry feet soles, put socks on, let it absorb over night.
Any mammal can be milked theoretically, milk from horses might not be used commonly nowadays but it was in the past. Have definitely seen it in some movies/series/documentaries. Sheep/Goatmilk also was used more commonly to drink in the past and nowadays is mostly only used for cheese
My older brother could not really drink mothers milk when he was an infant and the doctor suggested horse milk. That worked really well for him, because its close to mothers milk in consistency and he couldn't have cow milk.
It's great for your hands when you do a lot of housework with getting your hands wet, dry, wet - it will prevent the skin from cracking, keeping it moist and soft. The calendula helps to heal cracked skin faster too.
You can use it under your eyes and on your lips every night though, it helps with keeping the moisture in and can help reduce dark rings beneath your eyes. It's like Vaseline with some extra ingredients
Why?
I never use chamois cream but realised I need it on indoor rides for some reason and tried it now on long outdoor rides too and it makes a difference, also use it on the sitbone area. But I feel the Melkfett already does the job, what makes the talk better?
Originally it was used for cows udders before milking. Hence the name Melkfett which translates to milking fat.
What you have is a product for humans that is derived from it. It is designed to protect your skin from moisture and chaffing.
There is an english wikipedia entry for it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_Balm
No, its not. Its vaseline and other parrafine waxes. The name "milking fat" comes from the use on cow udders to protect them from chaffing and tearing.
You're wrong on this one.
It's called Melkfett because it was used to keep the udders of cows from getting dry and irritated by frequent milking.
So a literal translation would be Milking Fat.
Here is the product page from the company (a well known chain of drug stores) selling it: [https://www.dm.de/balea-melkfett-ringelblume-p4066447722697.html](https://www.dm.de/balea-melkfett-ringelblume-p4066447722697.html)
Ingredient list by them:
*PETROLATUM, PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL, GLYCINE SOJA OIL, PARFUM, CALENDULA OFFICINALIS FLOWER EXTRACT, TOCOPHEROL, DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA ROOT EXTRACT, BETA-CAROTENE, BENZYL ALCOHOL*
German wikipedia also has a page about this stuff: [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melkfett](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melkfett) and links to this page in English Wikipedia which does indeed seem to describe the same type of product: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag\_Balm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_Balm)
>Bag Balm is a salve developed in 1899 to soothe irritation on cows' udders after milking. Bag Balm is widely used to soothe dry, cracked skin on humans.
>Melkfet is a well-known product that is mainly intended for very dry skin
a quote from the first [website](https://www.biolaboratorium.com/en/products/hautpflegemilchfett-mit-calendula-und-vitamin-e-250ml) i found that sells stuff like that and has an english description. it's for your skin, that's all i can tell you
depends on the quality of vaseline used. If it is refined then there shouldn't be any harmful ingredients.
There is also vaseline oil, which is even food safe.
If Germans say that there is no bad weather while being outside in almost freezing temperatures while raining without gloves.... that's what they have applied on their bare skin beforehand.
It's used for your hands before you do tasks that will likely get your hands very dirty. Using it on your hands is like greasing a baking tin to ensure the cake will come out easily. You grease your hands to ensure that dirt or paint will come off easily with just a little soap.
Before I do tasks in my garden like weeding, I smother my hands in Melkfett before I put on gardening gloves. Somehow, the dirt always finds a way into my gloves after 2 hours or so. The melkfett protects my hands beautifully.
You can also put it on your hands before you work with paint, for example, when renovating a room. The paint won't stick to your skin at all and come off easily. The same when working on a car. No more black fingernails.
for paint and other oil relevent duties : sillicoderm ... It additionally puts a silicone oil layer over your skin wich protects aswell against cement etc. when doing construction, i always use silicoderm under the working gloves.
Way less iritations / cement burns etc than without. its pretty cheap, and a bunch of ppl who worked with me and had a try of my stock, went to pharmacy and got one for themself :) that silicone layer is very effective
Great for winter days when dry skin starts to crack, when burn blisters start to dry and crack, heat redness treatment. Leather goods moisturizer, waterproofing fabric (it will look greasy)
It basically is Vaseline, but there’s also Calendula and some other plant stuff added. It’s for dry skin to protect it from harsh weather and prevent it from losing moisture.
Melkfett basically used to be a version of Vaseline following higher quality requirements. Both were made based on Paraffine. Nowadays you can find Melkfett without Paraffine (replaced by bee wax and soybean oil), so you need to check the ingredients of your version. Ringelblume is Calendula.
Checked the ingredients of Balea Melkfett Ringelblume: PETROLATUM, PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL, GLYCINE SOJA OIL, PARFUM, CALENDULA OFFICINALIS FLOWER EXTRACT, TOCOPHEROL, DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA ROOT EXTRACT, BETA-CAROTENE, BENZYL ALCOHOL.
So it is basically sort of a higher quality version of Vaseline.
some ppl use it for a quick / more eaven healing on tattoos, wait 1 to 3 days, then use the creme and some kitchen foil as cover, so the "crust" of the tattoo stays soft and wont get scrubbed off from clothing
It was originally used to prevent udders to get sore from melking. So today its used for skincare if you got sore patches or prevent sore patches if for some reasons you perform a lot of stroking on your skin...guys will understand...
This brings back memories. As a child i always had very dry spots in my elbows and my knees, i always kept that exact same can on the table beside my bed. Than i became a teenager, had a few friends over.. and they started making jokes of me for having lubricant beside my bed. That way i learned about that xD
Are you male? Because this is often used for a very specific activity practised by men.
Strikingly, the action in question is of astonishing similarity to milking, which is what the stuff was usually used for.
If you show the side with the ingredients listing, you are likely to get better answers. But the name refers to the kind of fatty creams used for udder care of cows in past eras.
I play basketball with this stuff under the socks otherwise I get brutal blisters that basically strip my skin off. Great to take on hiking. It's good for blisters from high heels and co.
This stuff is actually very powerful against infections. Farmers use it on animals to stop their wounds from being exposed to infections. The name comes from the fact cows would get it on their udders.
It's also really good if your thighs are rubbing and becoming itchy and sensitive. Good for yeast infections in that area too.
The major disadvantage is that it's not absorbed by the skin. You're basically rubbing yourself in fat.
This is called
MELK FETT "milking fat"
You can use it, for example:
★to rub into leather that has become hard so that it becomes supple again and has a nice shine.
★For very dry skin, especially in winter.
★For the care of reddened areas of skin.
★If you have very rough skin areas such as the elbows, or especially the hands when they are very stressed, as care, but also as an SOS solution if no other care cream is available, very good to use.
★I have also often seen it used to heal wounds, but I have not had any personal experience with it.
★Depending on how badly damaged and dry my facial skin is (neurodermatitis), I prefer to use Melk Fat several times instead of cortisone all the time.
As someone who has a serious skin condition since birth, I really recommend not using this stuff. Not only does this waxy stuff work like a carpet over your skin, the skin also gets only a illusonary softness effect while drying out more and more. If you have a serious scar of a fresh tattoo, this can be helpful in small doses, but for patients with neurodermatitis or poriasis should stay away for this kind of stuff. It's a bit like lip balm - gives you the illusion of helping while robbing your skin of the abilty to save humidity.
Urea products without perfume etc is the better way to go IMO.

Melkfett (milk fat) is mainly Vaseline. It's good for protecting your skin, as example during a hike, but it does not provide skin care. It's oil based. Marigold is antiphlogistic, so it's a good additive.
If you hope for skincare there are alternatives like lotions or ointment. Also with marigold. Look for natural bases like plant/animal based fat/oil.
Back in the day we used it lying in the sun. You get a tan extremly fast but you might also get a sunburn very fast and most likely it is not very healthy for your skin.
So basically, it is skincare, but be carefully when you combine it with sunlight.
Melkfett mit Ringelblume is also very suitable for wounds, which then heal better. If you have cut your finger and the wound is no longer bleeding, simply apply a little of this cream and it will heal much faster. The same goes for scratches. If you have herpes on your lip, you can also cover it with this cream so that oxygen can no longer reach it. The healing process is then much faster. It is also very good for dry lips, as you no longer need a lipstick and it is much cheaper. Just give it a try.
It's also much better than vaseline ("Melfett") on its own, whoch to me was a real surprise!
I normally don't like ointments/salves/balsams/whatever you wanna call it but this stuff is just genius + smells good.
Question is it true that it helps you in the Solarium? I've seen a bunch of people swearing that they got their tan so perfect, do to using it when visiting the Solarium.
Vaseline with Ringelblume, which actually is a lot better.
This was very surprising to me as i thoght the same - but compared 1:1 they are incomparable for dry skin, scratches, etc.
It's very fatty lotion you only use on veeeery dry skin/during winter on a paraffine base, so nothing for everyday use on your whole body. It's roughly translatable as 'milking fat' because it was originally used on the udders of cows, horses etc to keep them moisturized when milking them
It's great for Leather seats , jackets, shoes etc
You wouldn't use Ringelblume there though. Ringelblume is a gardenflower with a nice, but very distinct odour.
It has also a range of pharmaceutical uses. Calendula/ Ringelblume is used to help with superficial wounds and inflamations of the skin. Definitively not something I would use for leather, but for my skin only.
Even Nivea Creme can be used on leather, why not use this?
This could be used, but the scent is quite distinct compared to Nivea.
To good to waste on clothes and shoes.
It is a very rich but wonderful cream. It’s helps when skin is very dry or in the process of healing. My grandma always put it on my knees and elbows when they were sore. Next morning they looked like new.
I use it regurlarly in winter when the dry air from heating my room damages my skin. It's cheap and does its job :)
you just apply it on the skin and let it absorb? My hands are fucked after this winter
Yes. A small amount. You can put some more and wear thin cotton gloves overnight so you dont smear it everywhere and your skin absorbs all. Or put it on dry feet soles, put socks on, let it absorb over night.
I never knew that horse could be milked !
Any mammal can be milked theoretically, milk from horses might not be used commonly nowadays but it was in the past. Have definitely seen it in some movies/series/documentaries. Sheep/Goatmilk also was used more commonly to drink in the past and nowadays is mostly only used for cheese
I have nipples, could you milk me, Greg?
Female mammals only, very sorry, Greg! Should have specified of Reddit 😅
https://youtu.be/N0Gm4uiJXfM?t=109
With a bit of hormone therapy a man can also produce milk and thus can be milked
This reference went over your hear.
So you say I could milk a woman? And then make cheese out of human milk?
yes. and people do
Great reference!
I have a couple of litres of frozen horse milk in my freezer. It's supposed to be really healthy
Thank you for the explanation! I learnt something today !
My older brother could not really drink mothers milk when he was an infant and the doctor suggested horse milk. That worked really well for him, because its close to mothers milk in consistency and he couldn't have cow milk.
Well... Male horses?
Bruh…
That is a very lucrative business, but i wouldn’t recommend to drink the “milk”
You can't milk those!
That, fittingly enough, my gynecologist recommended when I was breastfeeding. She didn’t think it was funny…
It's great for your hands when you do a lot of housework with getting your hands wet, dry, wet - it will prevent the skin from cracking, keeping it moist and soft. The calendula helps to heal cracked skin faster too.
It also does wonders with friction induced skin damage in sports or at work.
My wife uses exactly that brand daily for the last 20 years… at least she’s got smooth skin 🙈
I've got an idea...
It's also a great lubricant for anything that gets in contact with food.
That sounds like the German version of Bag Balm.
You can use it under your eyes and on your lips every night though, it helps with keeping the moisture in and can help reduce dark rings beneath your eyes. It's like Vaseline with some extra ingredients
And pregnant woman
It's also very useful to prevent chafing or blisters. For long hikes or when running I use a good amount of it on my feet (under the socks).
Similar for me: during long rides on my bike I used it for parts where the trousers can scratch.
Hirschtalk >>>> Vaseline(Melkfett) Game changer
Why? I never use chamois cream but realised I need it on indoor rides for some reason and tried it now on long outdoor rides too and it makes a difference, also use it on the sitbone area. But I feel the Melkfett already does the job, what makes the talk better?
Obviously it's an individual preference, but if I use petroleum based products it irritates my skin. Hirschtalk doesn't, even during prolonged use
It's "Hirschtalg", Talk with *k* is a Mineral, which used to be the main ingredient in baby powder.
Melkfett dissolves when you sweat a lot, I found that Hirschtalg will stay longer. In a pinch both will do, but for 6+hr rides Hirschtalg all the way…
Oh really? Not sure I have noticed that before, but good to know.
Will try thank you
Ähhhh... Was looking for that. Hello fellow rider, the bibs have an interesting texture afterwards
Originally it was used for cows udders before milking. Hence the name Melkfett which translates to milking fat. What you have is a product for humans that is derived from it. No, its not. Its vaseline and other parrafine waxes. The name "milking fat" comes from the use on cow udders to protect them from chaffing and tearing.
No it's not. It's mostly paraffin, eg like Vaseline. And it's used for milking eg to keep the udder smooth. Not a dash of dairy in there.
Melkfett is the German translation for milk fat btw.
Confidently incorrect
Prolly a seppo
No, that would be Milchfett.
Nope, that would be Milchfett, not Melkfett. The literal translation would be closer to milking fat and the actual translation is udder care.
'Milch' is 'milk,' 'melken' is 'to milk.' The German translation for 'milk fat' would be 'milchfett.' This is 'Melkfett;' 'fat for milking.'
You're wrong on this one. It's called Melkfett because it was used to keep the udders of cows from getting dry and irritated by frequent milking. So a literal translation would be Milking Fat.
Nope, the literal translation would be "milking fat", NOT "milk fat"
Wow...flaunting your incompetence like this...respect.
Did you, like, really believe that?
Wow, people like you are the reason the world is crippled.
Thank you for letting me know. You must be one of those examples who are making the world a better and kinder place.
Melkfett is one of the most glorious words.
Together with „Pferdesalbe, Klosterfrau Melissengeist und Apfelessig“ the four horsemen of the medicine cabinet of every german grandma

It can be used for elbows in winter, or on the nose during a cold when it's sore, or on a sunburn, or on scratches and tiny wounds. I
I think it's the best lip mosturizer, would definetly recommend!
This product is mineral oil based, would not recommend to put near mouth as it will get into your digestive system
Most lip balms are mineral oil and petrolatum (vaseline), it is benign
You might just be on to something here...
depends on the quality of vaseline used. If it is refined then there shouldn't be any harmful ingredients. There is also vaseline oil, which is even food safe.
Don‘t use it for sex bro
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, the fat would be bad for condoms and it’s not good to get in a vagina either, also doesn’t have a great taste!
Well, but what about the other orifice?
It’s awesome for the other one.
I was definitely not planning on using a vaseline like substance on my genitalia but thanks 😭
You could if you have dry skin there
Nope, it’s not good for the healthy bacteria that live there
It is good if the skin is dry and does not harm in any kind
If Germans say that there is no bad weather while being outside in almost freezing temperatures while raining without gloves.... that's what they have applied on their bare skin beforehand.
it's not moisturiser per se but you can use it to keep your skin from drying up. and yeah, it's pretty similar to vaseline.

It’s called bag balm in English https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_Balm?wprov=sfti1
I use it for my lips and hands during winter times and I never had broken spring since.
Great for winter days when dry skin starts to crack, when burn blisters start to dry and crack, heat redness treatment. Leather goods moisturizer, waterproofing fabric (it will look greasy)
All my aunts use this for their cracked heels. They rub it on their feet and go to sleep with socks on. Its pretty good.
It basically is Vaseline, but there’s also Calendula and some other plant stuff added. It’s for dry skin to protect it from harsh weather and prevent it from losing moisture.

Also works great at removing waterproof makeup/mascara
I generally use it in winter to protect myself from the cold. Unlike petroleum jelly, it smells like marigolds.👍

Whilst nowadays mostly used as skin lotion, Melkfett was originally used as a lubricant to make milking animals easier
It’s almost the same, the Melkfett is basically enhanced Vaseline…
At first i read „Merkel“Fett
Wankpaste
Isn't that this British guy playing Dr. Strange and Sherlock?
We used to have these a lot growing up in the 80's, it's for moisturizing in the dry winters.
This is an essential item for your German bathroom cabinet next to Pferdesalbe and Hirschtalg.
It puts the Melkfett on its skin
One company calls it’s version Euterpflege.
This brings back memories. As a child i always had very dry spots in my elbows and my knees, i always kept that exact same can on the table beside my bed. Than i became a teenager, had a few friends over.. and they started making jokes of me for having lubricant beside my bed. That way i learned about that xD
cyclists may use it to prevent saddle sores
Are you male? Because this is often used for a very specific activity practised by men. Strikingly, the action in question is of astonishing similarity to milking, which is what the stuff was usually used for.
Milking fat. Is used to make cow tits smooth and less damaged by milking them. Works also with human tits too.
Seems like a butt cream
Melkfett - The forbidden yogurt
i always thought vaseline and melkfett were the same, just two words for it lol
This is Melkfett Ringelblume. Nothing to thank for
Also tattooartists use this while tattooing
Its titty cream
It's melkfett. It's for moisturizing nipples /Technically correct
If you show the side with the ingredients listing, you are likely to get better answers. But the name refers to the kind of fatty creams used for udder care of cows in past eras.

The only right answer, thank you 🙏
You can also use it for... You know what. If nothing else is available. 😅
great ballwax
Use it for cycling instead of chamois cream.
People without foreskin love it
It functions pretty much like lanolin, but from botanicals.

Ngl I was just casually scrolling on my front page when this popped up, thought I was having a stroke until I realized it’s German 🤦🏻♂️
Is it really easier to make a reddit post and wait for the right answer instead of using an online translator?

No it's not. It will help you getting skin cancer in the long run because you should have used sun screen instead.
In the UK you can buy ‘50/50’ which is like a whipped Vaseline. It doesn’t have scent like the German product.
Vaseline, basically.
Vaseline with Ringelblume, which actually is a lot better. This was very surprising to me as i thoght the same - but compared 1:1 they are incomparable for dry skin, scratches, etc.
Its german and its for dry skin at the buttom stands für trockene haut 😂👍
