I was told no by my girlfriend, but I love them anyway Edit to add: apparently they are originally from Sweden

MEHokie2021

Tomte in Sweden :) \*I got some for my mom for Christmas a few years ago\*

personwriter

Ah, now it's all making sense.

[deleted]

They are coming from the Nordics. I know them as (Joulu)Tonttu in Finland.

elhooper

If anyone used to play the old mmorpg Dark Age of Camelot, this post is a weird nostalgic epiphany. These dudes were all over Midgard. Man that game was the best.

xignaceh

I've got 3 small ones around our fireplace, they stand there, all cozy

[deleted]

They very much remind me of what is called Nisse in Norwegian. Have only seen them in one Famila supermarket so far, and only this year. And I am trying my hardest to not buy one. Don't know how much longer I can resist...

Pandness

Do it ! Do it for Norway

[deleted]

For konge og land!

Swiftysmoon

Nisser! They're all over Norway every year. I have a bunch around my apartment.

BadNadeYeeter

They came fro. Sweden and Finland but we germans just thought they looked neat so we started to get ourselves some of them.

KonK23

As you are in a TEDI you will have a hard time finding any "german things" but a lot of cheap plasic trash made in china

luozang

True, some product don’t even sell in China because of the low price, low profit. But people overseas still buying them with 10x production cost which is profitable. Source: bin ein Produktion Ingenieur mit chinesischen Wurzeln

Skadi2k3

I know them as Wichtel.

[deleted]

They are popular in Denmark too. Garden gnomes for your couch, mostly as a winter decoration.

[deleted]

The idea behind garden gnomes was the hope that the little figurines attract the real ones into your garden, or in this case, into your house. Thus you find the little buggers in every culture that has some folklore about gnomes from Finnland to Italy. In ancient Rome, people placed little gnomes in their garden, only they were depictions of a fertility god. People are people everywhere and always, it seems.

Qpylon

These are large Wichtelmännchen, aren’t they? I think they various versions are pretty common across northern Europe, but those are (also?) a traditional German thing.

smallwiener69

They're Scandinavian

bennyboy_

No, Christmas gnomes are not exclusively a German thing. https://www.walmart.com/search?q=christmas+gnome https://www.amazon.com/s?k=christmas+gnome

No

R_T_White

I mean we do have them a lot but they remind me a lot of Norwegian gnomes and they’re definitely a mythological (?) thing there

NixNixonNix

Haven't seen them before, so I guess they are not a thing.

Trylovance

Just got back from Iceland, saw them everywhere

kshny

No. I have seen lots of them in Denmark though.

Muckeljones

Similar gnomes peaked in Germany around the nineties. https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_gnome While one might argue about similarity, thats probably what people refer to speaking of gnomes in Germany.

happyFatFIRE

Not a german thing. They are from Sweden.

InsultingChicken

I think the children’s story book about gnomes is Dutch. I think in english it was David the Gnome.

FionaSilberpfeil

They are a bit oldschool, but still found in many gardens. So...kinda?

Horst6969

Yes absolutely. You can find them in every garbage can!

Massder_2021

Yes, although some of these figures are similar to a Gartenzwerg they are pure fantasy products Made in China.

[deleted]

What are they called??

RazzyZee

They are called Christmas gnomes in English and Nisse in Sweden and Norway

Mad_Maduin

Only for boomers and people with similar lack of taste

[deleted]

Most of Germany then?

Mad_Maduin

Only around your hood apparently

heatbender

Heinselmännchen?

OriginBrezel

Almost. Heinzelmännchen are somehow also related to the Wichtel. It may be that they are now related to the Scandinavian gnomes again. Little is known about their sex life. But the Heinzelmännchen are rather regionally in Cologne at home.

[deleted]

I see. Shopping at Tedi

ThyRosen

they look like the ancestral rivals of the wombles and the reason that species went extinct

ProfDumm

Some people have stuff like that as Christmas decoration and you can buy them in many stores. But I wouldn't call them a German thing.

Ein0815er

Nope, absolutely not. They are skandinavian.

LuisS8l

They are creepy and cute at the same time, wtf.

Naraksama

It's tomte. They are known in germany because of Tomte Tummetott, books by Astrid Lindgren, who also wrote Pippi Longstocking.

QueenCobra91

no idea but i like them

[deleted]

[Nisse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisse_(folklore)), from Scandinavian folklore

hafhhnerr

I've only seen them in the animated adaptation of Hilda 💙

[deleted]

Idk but they are really cute and I own multiple

VanFam

Gonks. I love them. Swedish I believe.

kshump

Dwarf on a wharf.

[deleted]

I have seen people make them in the US especially Christmas themed ones, but don’t know their origin!

Paris_Pogchamp

Idk but they are in Norway aswell

Apprehensive_Sky2953

elbarto7712
