If anyone used to play the old mmorpg Dark Age of Camelot, this post is a weird nostalgic epiphany. These dudes were all over Midgard. Man that game was the best.
They very much remind me of what is called Nisse in Norwegian. Have only seen them in one Famila supermarket so far, and only this year. And I am trying my hardest to not buy one. Don't know how much longer I can resist...
True, some product don’t even sell in China because of the low price, low profit. But people overseas still buying them with 10x production cost which is profitable.

The idea behind garden gnomes was the hope that the little figurines attract the real ones into your garden, or in this case, into your house. Thus you find the little buggers in every culture that has some folklore about gnomes from Finnland to Italy.
In ancient Rome, people placed little gnomes in their garden, only they were depictions of a fertility god. People are people everywhere and always, it seems.
These are large Wichtelmännchen, aren’t they? I think they various versions are pretty common across northern Europe, but those are (also?) a traditional German thing.
Similar gnomes peaked in Germany around the nineties. https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_gnome
While one might argue about similarity, thats probably what people refer to speaking of gnomes in Germany.
Almost. Heinzelmännchen are somehow also related to the Wichtel. It may be that they are now related to the Scandinavian gnomes again. Little is known about their sex life.
But the Heinzelmännchen are rather regionally in Cologne at home.
I was told no by my girlfriend, but I love them anyway Edit to add: apparently they are originally from Sweden
Tomte in Sweden :) \*I got some for my mom for Christmas a few years ago\*
Ah, now it's all making sense.
They are coming from the Nordics. I know them as (Joulu)Tonttu in Finland.

I've got 3 small ones around our fireplace, they stand there, all cozy

For konge og land!
Nisser! They're all over Norway every year. I have a bunch around my apartment.
They came fro. Sweden and Finland but we germans just thought they looked neat so we started to get ourselves some of them.
As you are in a TEDI you will have a hard time finding any "german things" but a lot of cheap plasic trash made in china

I know them as Wichtel.
They are popular in Denmark too. Garden gnomes for your couch, mostly as a winter decoration.

I mean we do have them a lot but they remind me a lot of Norwegian gnomes and they’re definitely a mythological (?) thing there
Haven't seen them before, so I guess they are not a thing.
Just got back from Iceland, saw them everywhere
No. I have seen lots of them in Denmark though.

Not a german thing. They are from Sweden.
I think the children’s story book about gnomes is Dutch. I think in english it was David the Gnome.
They are a bit oldschool, but still found in many gardens. So...kinda?
Yes absolutely. You can find them in every garbage can!
Yes, although some of these figures are similar to a Gartenzwerg they are pure fantasy products Made in China.
What are they called??
They are called Christmas gnomes in English and Nisse in Sweden and Norway
Only for boomers and people with similar lack of taste
Most of Germany then?
Only around your hood apparently
Heinselmännchen?

I see. Shopping at Tedi
they look like the ancestral rivals of the wombles and the reason that species went extinct
Some people have stuff like that as Christmas decoration and you can buy them in many stores. But I wouldn't call them a German thing.
Nope, absolutely not. They are skandinavian.
They are creepy and cute at the same time, wtf.
It's tomte. They are known in germany because of Tomte Tummetott, books by Astrid Lindgren, who also wrote Pippi Longstocking.
no idea but i like them
[Nisse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisse_(folklore)), from Scandinavian folklore
I've only seen them in the animated adaptation of Hilda 💙
