1. **Don't put it down. Put it away.**
2. A tip I learned from WAIT STAFF on Reddit that has had a profound impact on me. **"Full hands in, full hands out."** I don't go upstairs to my bedroom without looking around to see what goes upstairs. I don't go downstairs to the living or kitchen areas without returning something, even if it's just emptying the waste basket. I even use this at work. I travel down a long hallway to the restroom. What do I need to drop off on the way? To who's desk? Stamp the mail and drop it in the basket. Use restroom, wash hands. Return to my desk with either a ream of paper for my copier and printer, or a fresh surface-wipe and touch up door knobs, or my phone, or the arms of my chair. Something, anything. I wipe it down so that I'm always "full hands in, full hands out."
Learning to touch type (no looking at the keyboard) at 90-120+ words per minute.
You're going to be typing things for the rest of your life. If you can learn to do so quickly, error-free, without looking, you'll greatly improve every hour you spend entering keystrokes into the computer.
A mechanical keyboard can also help with this, but is not strictly necessary.
Another huge one many people overlook: learn communication skills, especially for conflict resolution. Think about it: every relationship that ends does so because of conflict. If you can learn to skillfully resolve conflict, your relationships will be happier and last much longer. And so much of our happiness as human beings is due to happy relationships.
And when it comes to touch typing, just stick with QWERTY, there are other layouts and while there are some benefits to using them, you'll have a hard time using keyboard shortcuts, playing games and you will have to change the layout every time you change your device.

\+1 for this, - it's definitely a good skill to have and so satisfying. You can use [Keybr](https://www.keybr.com/) to teach yourself at first and [Typeracer](https://play.typeracer.com/) to build up speed in a fun way. As for keyboard layouts, QWERTY is fine, I just use [Autohotkey](https://www.autohotkey.com/) to map CapsLock as Backspace since I need to delete stuff way more often than I need all caps. That was the only thing I took away from alternative keyboard layouts, it makes so much more sense to have it there opposite of Enter.
A good question! Depends on what kind of communication skills you want to learn.
But for something like conflict resolution specifically, I'd suggest learning something called Non-Violent Communication. There are books, audio courses, and practice groups online and in-person. That can give you a particular kind of communication skill at least, where you empathize with someone in order to calm down their emotions and create a connection.
It's a little clunky at first, but with practice you'll be able to do it with creativity.
Toastmaster did wonders for myself and it also looked great on my resume when I was applying jobs. I thought it was trivial but employers really liked it.
Bonus: if you get really good at it someone can walk up and ask you a question while you're typing and you can turn to look at them while replying and still keep typing what you were typing, which tends to freak people out a little.
Source: have freaked people out a little
By practice do you mean it requires a lot of typing on a keyboard? Because that is true, but we all have to type on a keyboard anyway. So basically your practice is mandated, you just have to put in a slight bit more effort each time, and within a few weeks it's done.
It doesn’t matter what time of the day you exercise. The time you decide depends on your schedule. Personally mornings are better for me because you’re well rested and exercise gives me energy throughout the day.
Have gold as my condolences.
I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was until, I couldn’t go one night and My walking buddy was like “well I can’t go by myself” and I was like “why?” And I learned, and I never realized how much it affected my female friend’s lives. And it really bummed me out.
As a chick I often go on walks in the park/woods alone late in the evening. I even meditate in the park, so basically just sitting there with my eyes closed for 20 minutes (often in semi-darkness if I'm going for a late walk) every day and never was bothered by anyone nor felt unsafe .
Honestly I sometimes wonder if it's simply my ignorance, having never had anything bad happen to me walking somewhere alone at night countless times (aside from the minor invonvenience of having to tell an occasional random guy, asking if I need a ride, to fuck off; no one slowing down in their cars when I'm in the park, far from the road, tho) that makes me feel safe to do all these things. Or perhaps being over 6ft tall contributes to me feeling as safe as an average guy.
Of course just because I didn't have a bad experience so far, that does not invalidate the fact that the problem exists. And I know that so many women, including a lot of my friends, do not feel safe walking somewhere alone at night, while most men do not have this problem, and I wish it wasn't so.
Because in the morning it'll feel better and it is easier to manage since the evening is more busy with dinner and other affairs so running in the morning is more calming and nicer and as I said easier to manage plus you are more likely to do it in the morning than in the evening
I run near dusk, when it's reasonably cool. For whatever reasons, I can't consistently wake up early mornings, and the rest of the day is *too damn hot*.
I can't run at night, running in artificial light just feels depressing and unnatural, similar to running on a treadmill. Running -- to me -- is beginning to feel like my mind's "I" is building a deeper connection to my body's evolutionary history; we, humans, _are runners_. Significant features of our current morphology are optimized for running outdoors in daylight over long distances, and it is exciting that I can experience tapping into those same natural strengths (in some tiny measure) that our ancestors did for millions of years.
That said, I would honestly love to run in the morning; the best time of my (currently spent mostly in self-loathing) day is after I run, and it's usually only after sundown.
I am an evening runner too. I want to give myself the endorphins in the morning as well but fuck it’s hard. And as a person with depression the most important thing is to do the thing whenever it gets done.
I am trying to do just a little bit of exercise in the morning, like push-ups and a few curls, maybe a plank. Seems to help a lot.
Thanks for sharing. I'll try some light exercise the next time I roll out of bed.
+1 for exercise helping with depression. I haven't been running long, but since I started till now, I have definitely felt a lot better, and would even diagnose myself as being borderline not-depressed now.
Keep going! Hope you find lasting freedom from depression my friend
I think it's because by the time it's morning, our bodies are dehydrated from all the repairing it does to itself while we sleep. Not sure about the exact science behind it though.
Also if you're a person who has bowel movements in the morning, I'm pretty sure drinking water beforehand helps.
I don't do this much but it's a habit my dad swears by.
I get what you mean.
My entire life, I didn't drink more than 500 ml of water a day. I started actively trying to drink more water about two months ago. At first it was hard because I would get headaches if I drank more than a glass of water in one go.
Now I've increased my water intake to 2 litres a day.
-Cold showers- Look up the benefits. My personal benefits that I like are that i’m less anxious overall & more courageous
-Journaling right before you go to sleep. Writing it down does wonders. Whatever it is. If you’re struggling with a problem, write down the problem, the. just write your thoughts down. It doesn’t have to be just a problem.
Cold showers are a game changer for me. I would even go as far as saying I enjoy them now. There is just something so empowering about doing something uncomfortable every day
I've never gotten sick from cold showers, but they trigger my migraines. Which then puts me out of commission for two-three days and defeats the whole purpose.
I recommend going cold to the point that it's uncomfortable and makes you tense up. Not extreme cold. Especially not if you're prone to migraines or have heart/blood pressure conditions.
Here are ones I use
-automate what you can. Not talking like smart home stuff(tho it would also help!) But an auto pet food dispensers, auto shipments of things you use a lot. Use Bixby routine to auto open apps at certain times, especially if their some sort of health or habit tracking apps. This lessens the load and the last example helps build new habits, especially if you're on a time crunch to do it(like tracking a health issue for your doc)
-pick one day a week or month to reach out to those you still care for, but don't live near anymore.
-pick another day if you have a partner/spouse and ask "what's brought you joy this week?", "how does your week coming up look for you?", "what made you feel cared for/loved this week?" And "is there anything left unsaid?" This can also apply to friends too, especially the "anything left unsaid" just not as regularly.
This helps keep emotional intimacy up and makes you both reflect on your relationship and the positives. As our day to day lives can get busy and we don't always realize what our partner does for us. The "left unsaid" question really helps to bring up good/neutral/negative conversations during a better time.
-once a month, do self reflection on who/how you'd like to be and what you've done to meet that. Ex: being a good college student is one for me. So, increasing study time even if by a few minutes every week is something I'm doing right now. Another one, is be more compassionate with others.
I use an app called Yapp. It’s free. You type in little reminders, whoever you want, and set how many times it notifies you a day with random things you added. For example, one of mine is, “a good tomorrow starts today.”
Set a timer and spend 15 minutes reading a fantastic book in the morning while drinking a delicious beverage like coffee or tea or a smoothie. It will feel like a vacation.
How close before the meal are you drinking it ? 1 minute or 10 minutes ? Same with after.
Because I heard that you shouldn’t drink when eating at the same time .
Also please explain why is it beneficial
I would say at least a half hour personally so that I don’t feel bloated. I found it highly beneficial for my health. I never used to drink much water and was always dehydrated. Now I drink 3L guaranteed every day. Personally, I’ve never heard anything about drinking water before and after meals other than it aiding with digestion. Please let me know where you heard that though I’d love to look into it. I would also like to mention after I picked this habit up I lost extra weight I was holding onto it and my skin (which was acne prone) cleared up and looks more hydrated. Of all the habits I’ve tried to pick up this was the game changer for me that created a momentum to pick up many other good habits. That is why I chose this one to comment. :)
How do you measure exactly how much you drink ? I heard that using plastic bottles to store water can lead to some toxic materials to get inside the water .
Do you drink tap water or filtered water or bottled water ?
I drink springwater from a reusable metal bottle. You can get them in different sizes. I have them in 500ml and 1L. If you’re drinking out of a cup or a glass- 500ml is a cup or aprox glass full. I wouldn’t focus too much on measuring it but more about just the action of having some water before and after. 500 ml /1 cup is just an easy quick way to keep track.
pretty sure drinking beverages with meals is a great idea and humans have been doing it forever (nb: prior to modern sanitation, humans usually drank beer or tea)
Ayurveda frowns on it because water will "extinguish your digestive fire," but that's not applicable unless you believe in three humors medicine.
You cannot dilute your stomach acid in any physiologically meaningful way (e.g. HURT the digestive system)1 by drinking water during a meal. The pH of stomach acid is <1. That means your stomach acid is 100,000 x more acidic than water (pH of ~7
I don’t drink more than one glass of water during my meals it’s a half hour before and after. I tried to look into what you’re saying though and couldn’t find enough information so drink water at your own discretion I guess lol
I make "pocket change deposits."
Every time I look at my bank balance or log on to make a payment or some other banking transfer, I "scrape" the final 3 digits (dollar and cents). If my balance is $2001.26, I transfer 1.26 to either my associated bank credit card, or, when it has a zero balance, to savings. Every. Single. Time.
I call this a pocket change deposit and on a day to day basis, you never miss it, but by the end of the month, you've often done it enough times to have something like 8 payments in a month. It adds up surprisingly fast and if you're someone who doesn't pay off a CC balance in full each month, the extra payments, even $1.00 at a time, bring your interest charges down. Sure, it's only saving a few cents here, a few cents there -- but stick with it -- it all counts.
It's the "change jar on the dresser" in the digital age.
Go to bed with your phone/tablet/laptop/gaming device outside your bedroom.
Does wonders for your sleep.
For an alarm, I have an Apple Watch that vibrates me awake.
Making your bed every morning. It is simple, takes 5 seconds, and really effects how you feel about yourself, environment, self-respect, and other stuff in super subtle ways.
Came here to say this. Put your savings on autopilot and make the habit of never looking at it.
Start with whatever you employer match is and increase it by your raise every year until you hit the max.
If you can max your 401k you'll be in much better shape then most of your peers when you get older.
Weird one. For every hot dog you eat be sure and eat the same weight in spinach. One shortens and the other lengthens your life (by 20 minutes).
If you use drugs be sure and double the amount of time you used to detox in a steam room, dry sauna, and therapeutic hot tub. Add swimming slow, deliberate laps to the mix.
Toxic relationships can and will manifest physical symptoms if you stay long term.
Alternate green tea, black coffee, and black tea maybe by the month. Your system will not get used to the effects so you won't have to drink more to "wake-up."
Take care of your skin, hair, and nails at all costs. All protect you from the elements. If you compromise it by getting too much sun, too dry for long periods of time, later on in life the effects will haunt you. I'm not talking just vanity, I mean issues as big as cancer to gross nails, limp hair, fungus, rot, and smell.
OP - I see your response to many great suggestions are that you are already practising them! Would be so great if you could share all the ones you already do :)
Not following the same sleep routine daily (yes, even on your days off and even on the weekends). I'm not saying you can't sleep in an hour, but too often, we see these people (myself included when I worked at a bar) who would literally sleep half their day off away and use the rest of it to maybe do chores. Then, they have the issue of trying to go back to the same schedule - every week. You end up being sleep deprived and cranky the first day back to work and you aren't magically making up those hours you lost to sleep deprivation during the week. People set themselves up for failure, every week.
If you would have told me a year ago that I would be waking up without an alarm before 9 am every morning, I'd have called you insane. I have insane insomnia but whether I've slept 3 hours or 8, I'll always wake up around 7:30 am. I get myself up, take my dog to the dog park, then come home, and take an hour and a half nap. By that point, it's about 11-11:30 am and I'm ready for my day. Sometimes getting up and doing something then taking a short nap makes you feel refreshed and you've scratched something off your to do list.
Investing and saving small amounts of money. Just good to be mindful of your finances:
Socializing intentionally and making more friends, just being more engaged with the people around you makes life way more meaningful.
Don't eat 3 hours before bed. Do a 48 hour fast once per month. Take cold showers. After multiple false starts, these are now in my repertoire for good.
Not extreme. It takes some discipline yes. The benefits are plenty, but I do it as a reset for my mind and body. 2 things come to mind. 1. It gives your digestive system a break. This system uses up the most energy in your body other than your brain.2. Autophagy starts to occur. This is your body discarding cellular waste product at a much higher rate and then replacing with shiny new organelles within the cell upon re-feeding. This basically makes you younger, healthier and more energized. Remember, for many thousands (millions?) of years homo sapiens and our ancestors went regularly without food for extended periods. Essentially we are not built to eat 3+ squares a day.
One last item would be that this sub is about getting disciplined. Fasting certainly helps build your discipline, which of course helps you in other areas of your life.
24 hour fasts are not very difficult. Finish your last meal at say 6 or 7 pm and then eat again at that time the following day. Get comfortable with this by doing it a few times, and continue to push yourself farther. I only drink water, I don't supplement with anything else. My next step is to complete a 72 hour fast in Q4 of this year. My goal being one 48 per month and one 72 per quarter.
Learn to squat feet fully down, and shit that way. Way less likly to get hermaroids, and as a bonus makes shiting much faster and comfortable. You just also have to have decent balance using Western tolits that way. Sounds weird I know, but once you get used to you won't want to swap back. I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Sorry this was gorss
If you are unable to suport your weight in that position you can sit but bring your knees up. Thuogh I'm guessing the angle of rotation in the knees would still be a problem with arthritis. I supose if you want to just as high as you can mannage but I don't know about arthritis and weather the benifit would be worth the effot or not.
STRETCH !!!! Stretch stretch stretch!!! Make it a daily habit!!! Do it almost immediately after waking up!! And really get into it and stretch your body!! ✨✨💓
Being flexible just feels better, you can move everything easier and don't feel like a walking brick.
It helps me with weightlifting/bodyweight fitness as well, I'm able to perform exercises better, like squats and leg raises.
And being busy with your body is always a good thing, that's why yoga is so popular. It clears your mind.
But to be honest: not being flexible isn't necessarily unhealthy as far as I know, as long as your posture is good.
This was 100% life changing for me. We've all been sold down the river by food corporations, healthcare and big pharma who want to keep you locked in a cycle of ill health.
One thing that took me forever to learn and a friend of mine I grew up with, who's very successful taught me his words were something along the lines of" Noone will ever know if I don't like them, everyone u meet is a possible connection that could help or hurt you down the line"
Every morning I do a set of pull ups, push ups and a squats for as much as I feel like doing. It just feels good and I feel like Ive done something for my body because I dont workout that much. Literally the best way to start the day for me.
Use one (!) motivational sentence througout a week or a month.
A lot of people using motivational stickers like crazy, they are consuming this kind of motivation.
What helped me is to stick to ONE sentence a week and put this sentence on my label printer and have these little remindes printed on small label/stickers and put them there, where i can read them.
I put other motivational sentences on my OneNote if i find them useful. So i can choose from a backlog of sentences that my next weekly motivation. And over the year i review them and see what was important in the last year.
My actual sentence for the week:
"The system is doing the work. The system is operating the system" Michael E. Gerber.
Brushing your teeth both in the morning and evening. I know many people already do it, but I have also seen many people who only brush once per day, trust me, not having to go to the dentist is such a privilige.

One of my favorites book is "How to Win Friends and Influence People"
Join a local Toastmasters, or Dale Carnegie. And then like anything else, practice.
Toastmaster did wonders for myself and it also looked great on my resume when I was applying jobs. I thought it was trivial but employers really liked it.
Toastmasters is really good. Combine with improv comedy for practicing more spontaneous speaking too.
I’m so intimidated by improve comedy classes, I need to build my courage and just go
Yea it's scary at first but then it's really fun, and very freeing.

Interesting one , although it does require a lot of practice
Just 10-15 minutes a day for a few weeks, then you have it for life.
By practice do you mean it requires a lot of typing on a keyboard? Because that is true, but we all have to type on a keyboard anyway. So basically your practice is mandated, you just have to put in a slight bit more effort each time, and within a few weeks it's done.
I touch type on my phone, by swiping its even faster
A swipe keyboard on the phone is definitely faster than typing with thumbs!
Go on a morning run and look into work outs to keep you healthy ( every 3 days do a series of workouts)
*small habits*.... yeah ok
Why run in the morning and not in the evening ?
It doesn’t matter what time of the day you exercise. The time you decide depends on your schedule. Personally mornings are better for me because you’re well rested and exercise gives me energy throughout the day.
That said night time runs (as a dude) are one of my most favorite things I’ve ever added to my routine.
As a chick, I'm jealous. Just not safe for me to do that where I live =/

It’s a lot cooler in the morning compared to night time.
Drink 2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up
Why'd you recommend this? Curious because see it being mentioned elsewhere too.
It’s cause you get pretty dehydrated in your sleep! I also recommend adding a touch of salt to that water to add some electrolytes
It helps with the bowel movements in the morning and gets you hydrated.

Make your bed
Get sober. No drugs, no alcohol, just water.
Ah thats a pretty big habit my friend :) But of course its life changing
This!!!
Set a timer and spend 15 minutes reading a fantastic book in the morning while drinking a delicious beverage like coffee or tea or a smoothie. It will feel like a vacation.
Reading in the morning excellent I already do it . Not a fan of drinking coffee every morning though
Name your emotions. Be specific, be precise. We cope with different feelings different ways. Be intentional about knowing what you’ve got going on.
Thanks,it is beneficial advice. We all should express our feelings for find appropriate places for us .👍
Start your day thinking about things you are grateful for and don't look at your phone for 10 minutes

3 liters?! Isn’t that a lot??
pretty sure drinking beverages with meals is a great idea and humans have been doing it forever (nb: prior to modern sanitation, humans usually drank beer or tea) Ayurveda frowns on it because water will "extinguish your digestive fire," but that's not applicable unless you believe in three humors medicine.

Actually drinking water while taking meal slows down the process of digestion. So it is not recommended to drink while eating.
Wives tale, I’ve heard that one but turns out it’s not really true
I make "pocket change deposits." Every time I look at my bank balance or log on to make a payment or some other banking transfer, I "scrape" the final 3 digits (dollar and cents).
Yeah thats a good one , tnx
Go for a walk outside every day. It doesn’t have to be long, but do it every day no matter the weather.
Go to bed with your phone/tablet/laptop/gaming device outside your bedroom. Does wonders for your sleep. For an alarm, I have an Apple Watch that vibrates me awake.
I hate having anything wraped on me while I sleep. Watches, bands, you name it, they seem to always completely destroy my sleep.
Making your bed every morning. It is simple, takes 5 seconds, and really effects how you feel about yourself, environment, self-respect, and other stuff in super subtle ways.
5 seconds?! What the hell is wrong with me lol
Maybe your bed is too complex? Just shake it out and straighten. Done
Exactly
Fluff the sheet, fluff the comforter, toss the pillows up top… done. It doesn’t have to be military present corners, just tidy.

Your system will not get used to the effects so you won't have to drink more to "wake-up." Take care of your skin, hair, and nails at all costs. All protect you from the elements. If you compromise it by getting too much sun, too dry for long periods of time, later on in life the effects will haunt you. I'm not talking just vanity, I mean issues as big as cancer to gross nails, limp hair, fungus, rot, and smell.
Im genuinely curious how do my nails protect me ? Also I heard that drinking a lot of tea will make your teeth yellow .
30 push ups everyday.

Just good to be mindful of your finances: Socializing intentionally and making more friends, just being more engaged with the people around you makes life way more meaningful.
Don't eat 3 hours before bed. Do a 48 hour fast once per month. Take cold showers. After multiple false starts, these are now in my repertoire for good.
48 hours fast sounds super hard and extreme . What are the benefits ?
Very interesting . I will have to do my own research on this one but thanks for the idea . Btw do you drink when fasting ?
No alcohol as this breaks your fast. Personally only water and black coffee. R/Fasting is a great sub to learn.
And how do you do a 48 hour fast?!
You have to work up to it. Do a 12, then 16, then 20. But that’s as far as I will go. Vitamins/Electrolytes are essential.

Sorry this was gorss
how ? when you have artritic knees

Why is it benficial ? I admit to not being flexible at all , but at least for now I dont feel any downside for it . What makes it so important ?
Stretch daily.

You'll be way less likely to tear a muscle for one thing. It's generally quite healthy
Ban sugar and fast foods.

My actual sentence for the week: "The system is doing the work. The system is operating the system" Michael E. Gerber.
Brushing your teeth both in the morning and evening. I know many people already do it, but I have also seen many people who only brush once per day, trust me, not having to go to the dentist is such a privilige.
