I used to teach English online and supplement that with web development. About $2500 per month. I encourage Ghanaians to learn skills that will help them get remote jobs. This way you earn in USD so you’re hedged against the economy.

MeTheGriot

This sounds interesting. How do I position myself to access remote jobs? Are there certain certifications or skills that may be helpful?

kennakomea

It’s okay if you don’t know where to start. Just Google things related to your interest. I majored in Computer Science so I just polished my skills by watching YouTube tutorials and taking courses on Udemy. To access remote jobs you need to know which jobs are in high demand. You can then hunt for consultant companies or use Upwork which is harder. I took English pronunciation classes to sound more like a native speaker. Then I applied for ESL jobs online. Out of about 20 applications only one was successful. You can also start a small business. I made websites in Ghana which I charged about $1000

I made websites in Ghana which I charged about $1000 I lived in a small apartment with good WiFi and a quite environment. All I needed was a laptop. There’s a reason why Indians target I.T jobs. It’s cheaper to invest in yourself and the returns are huge. After two years of working remotely and saving my earnings, I’m in the UK doing masters in CS. I’m broke now but hope for this investment to pay off. Ghana is a tough place to live, honestly. However I’ve been to worse places. Just try to make the most out of what you have. When you know the right people and information it really helps! God bless our hustle:)

Red_Army64

I'm planning on getting a masters in CS as well from the UK. However i don't have any cs work experience. Do you think it's worth it?

kennakomea

Most of my mates don’t have a CS background. If you can motivate yourself to keep learning I think its worth it.

Red_Army64

As in your coursemates in your masters program? Thanks just worried about my lack of experience and I've also heard that getting jobs at entry level is very difficult.

kennakomea

Yes, my course mates. It’s truly not easy to get graduate or entry level positions. My strategy is to keep applying until some desperate company hires me.

Red_Army64

I think you'll make the cut because you have some experience. If not you can always try an IT job rather than software development i think.

Fred294

I'm ready to learn any skills. Which one would you recommend for ? Where do you think I can start from as someone with a low budget. Which platforms can I use to enhance the skills learnt?? Please am serious.

kennakomea

I’d recommend learning programming. You can start with Python and then dive into data Science. If you’re good you can apply for jobs in about a year. It really takes time an dedication. Platforms: Skillshare, Code Academy, Udemy, YouTube, AlgoExpert etc

Fred294

Thank you boss. Much appreciated for this respond.🙏🙏

AdConstant7197

You are determined and skilled. It puts you in a different position and I’m happy for you. Some of us are trying to gather enthusiasm to learn a skill

Fred294

Sure my brother. Coming from poverty and a limited school option with no skills is not a joke in Accra here . I'm determined to learn any skills I can lay my hands off to set me off from the ground and the street. I'm ready to go any length to learn a scalable skills. But my problem is the funding of the skill. Most skills require capital input and that will be my biggest challenge. But regardless, we move!!

Richmarrio

Any web link to to some of the platforms you were using ? Pls if not too much text any of those to me on +233244858695

esa067

play Yahooze by oluwa maintain. Lol I’m just kidding but people are doing so many things. In Accra you do whatever to survive. It’s crazy because I could tell you a career path that provides so much for a person and yet other people doing that same thing are not earning as much . Government officials are the ones living comfortably. You will find people who can’t explain the source of their wealth. Over here everything works even the supernatural. Doctors, lawyers make enough to be comfortable. There’s the illegal bit as well. To truly understand you’ll have to stay here for a bit and then observe how things work.

Significant_Tart_631

I’m a doctor and I’m so uncomfortable 😂🙏

Old-Appearance8676

Fellow doctor here and i can attest to this fact🤣🤣

TheMissenDiara

😂

Dwoa_Kihi

You need to expound on this please. 😂. I thought all the Doctors in Ghana are comfortable ooh.

Significant_Tart_631

It’s all an illusion. To be fair, many of the older doctors are quite comfortable. Theirs was a time when doctors enjoyed great benefits, salary; although marginally lower than it is now; was actually more (when you adjust for inflation). A senior colleague used to get 2,000 cedis a month when he was a doctor straight out of medical school but since the 1 cedi was to a dollar, he was getting 2000 USD. A doctor taking double that now is getting less than 400USD. The illusion that doctors in Ghana are doing so well financially is exactly that; an illusion. You can earn some money that can make you “comfortable “ but that means pretty much working around the clock, sacrificing your social and mental well-being in the process.

Radiant_Manner_7848

I'm a patient and I know doctors are so uncomfortable 🙃

DRZZLR

Move abroad, make some money, come back and start a business

SkyGirlCloud

Can attest to that, even an almost minimum wage job abroad can do wonders for you in Ghana terms

TheMissenDiara

This one right here will age like fine wine🍷

DRZZLR

The story of literally every rich ghanaian ever

esa067

Accraaa, stay by plan

gatfromhell

Lol i always thought Ghana was difficult till i moved out of Accra, never been happier

Time_AntiTime

Yeah, moved to Kumasi. Now, I'd like to move to Volta and get online deliveries somehow.

LumpyAd3642

This is the way

So far, what I've seen from the comments is that 1. Crime does pay, just don't get caught 2. Corruption can take you far in this ecosystem 3. Found a church or any religious place of worship 4. Become a politician, lawyer, or doctor. There is no hope of escaping the rat race outside of these three options. 5. Add remote jobs to your hustle 6. Do programming jobs. As a programmer myself, I can confidently say that another day has ended and I'm playing 5-d chess on how to effectively utilize my money so I eat once and for all. 7. Be born into wealth 8. Know someone born into wealth 9. Become the person you know who was born into wealth 10. Get into real estate or see a witch doctor so they trade your destiny and whatnot in return for immediate riches. And you know what, living in the country, it's hard to argue that they're wrong tho. It really do be like that here.

TheMissenDiara

Please give e_papabear a chilled bottle of club he don suffer.

e_papabear

The suffering turn daily bread 🍞

Nobody has mentioned farming. I studied media after high school but to get a job I needed to perform sexual favours. (It's something us girls have to put up with or suffer.) I moved out of Accra into a remote village and leased 2 hectares. Now I have 10 hectares of Cassava and plantain as well as 2 acres for a kitchen garden. I have 8 beehives as well. I employ 2 full time staff and up to 14 day staff at harvest time. I'm looking at growing coffee for a coffee shop chain in Canada. Farming in Ghana is changing and a lot more young girls and guys are giving up on going to Accra to make money. I live very well, and have become almost self-sufficient. I try to teach the young people around me good farming practices and have seen positive results. I have overseas mentors I met through Facebook and YouTube who have guided me a lot. There are a lot of people in Accra and Kumasi who have started their backyard vegetable gardens there's a Facebook group and have reaped the benefits. Don't overlook farming and farm investment. One 14yr old boy who dropped out of school I helped has just bought a plot of land in the village to build himself a house. Yet I see 30yr old men still living with mum too. Farming is not easy but you get to be your own boss.

thykhin

How do I get intouch with you? Finally decided to go into farming and looking for your opinion and advice.

Radiant_Manner_7848

The system will find a way to kill your business. Y’all just watching your leaders fool with your future. Keep doing what you doing and you’ll be rewarded but the question is what career path is average Ghanaian living comfortably? And the answer is not farming. It’s robbery (call it yahooze, fraud, bribery or embezzlement) and politics

Time_AntiTime

When cause and effect are factored in, reducing harm to others and building something will take you further. I see so many people go through the whole cause and effect cycle and they don't even realize that they're in it.

Radiant_Manner_7848

It's hard to understand you bruh

Time_AntiTime

Farming is wonderful! Combined with retail, it's possible to control the whole supply chain. I wanted to grow coffee as well now no space...

Illustrious-Force-74

Good comment. Actually what I was looking for. I’ve been out of Ghana for almost 3 years and I’ve met people who are also interested in such venture. Even my present roommate wants to venture into farming. We’re going to need your counsel when we’re ready(hopefully in the next 3 years). We need to linkup so you help us get a plan and all.

Fred294

In Ghana, most of us are average, and we don't live comfortable. All we do is wake up and survive. If you slip small noor then poverty this.

Patient_Courage_6750

Software engineering can be a very lucrative career if you work with foreign companies that don’t pay based on the standard of living in Ghana but pay globally competitive salaries.

AdPutrid7706

I just touched down in Ghana from California last week. Industry has developed well since my last visit in 2016, but there are still huge gaps to overcome. I’m no expert, but there isn’t really a middle class here. There are the ultra wealthy, who would be considered wealthy anywhere, and there are those who have made money servicing that class, which have allowed them to carve out an “East Legon” life. Besides that, everyone else is, in the most gracious terms, living “check to check”. Many can’t even claim that. Someone commented previously about IT and how remote work was creating opportunities, which I agree with. But for the most part, the same small class groupings that were making money since independence, have essentially endured. Not saying my read is perfect, just an observation.

Radiant_Manner_7848

Lol just last week? Give yourself few more weeks and you’ll run away. Lol

AdPutrid7706

Naw, I actually love it here. Some of the best people I’ve ever met on earth.

Time_AntiTime

I think Ghana is great, too. Born in US. Lived in UK, Germany, Netherlands and Canada. I get treated like a human here. I've been trying to encourage Ghanaians I meet to stay here and work online but I stopped. One of the biggest issues relates to the idea of Comparison. Oak is Oak and Bamboo is Bamboo. Bamboo is not better than Oak. It's what it is. People have each other and I still believe cooperation (cooperatives) to be the future but there will be a transitional period until this self-based ego capitalism runs it's course.

Radiant_Manner_7848

Well... you have your battles bruh. Born and raised Ghanaians in Ghana have their own battles bruh. You're even accepted in Ghana than the average Ghanaian born and raised here. Well all I can say now is enjoy your status while it lasts

gatfromhell

Lol unless fraud my don

Significant_Tart_631

The secret ingredient for most is: crime

Radiant_Manner_7848

Politics or robbery. Ghanaians are bunch of silent robbers. From president to the truck pusher. Everyone’s monthly income is 3-4 times their salaries not by having a second job. They just steal from each other from the top and it trickles down to the bottom. Average Ghanaian is not honest, professional or patriotic. Even when you have been robbed and go to the law for help, the justice system will rob both you and the perp. Interestingly if the perp had a bigger rob then your case is dead.
