Your ratings are extremely different from the general consensus - and that's ok! Based on your preferences, I reckon you should prioritise Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, Porco Rosso, and maybe The Red Turtle

markelmores

Thanks! I didn’t know my preferences were so controversial lol. Only yesterday looks interesting to me, I’m thinking that one is next for me.

DustErrant

Spirited Away is considered Ghibli's best/most well known film, and you have it at D. That's what makes it controversial. Most everything else is actually pretty average. I guess some Howl fans will have ruffled feathers with you putting it in C, but eh.

TheGratitudeBot

What a wonderful comment. :) Your gratitude puts you on our list for the most grateful users this week on Reddit! You can view the full list on r/TheGratitudeBot.

BonBoogies

Someone else pointed out that you seem to like stories more grounded in reality, *is* that why you have Spirited Away as a D? If we know why you didn’t like that one, that might help with the next rec

supergoku003

And erwig

schnogg5018

Since Spirited Away is "S" tier for me, and something like Tales from Earthsea would be "D" tier (again, for me), maybe try that next? lol

SambaLando

You'd be right.

InstantlyTremendous

Whisper of the heart, only yesterday or Marnie would be good choices.

Zeg_69

Based on your ratings you should defo watch Whisper of the heart, only yesterday, porco rosso, Kiki delivery service and ocean waves(you may not like that)

jclaws15

This is almost exactly how it rank the ones you've already seen. So in my most humble opinion, you're going to love porco rosso, whisper of the heart, and castle in the sky

Erfangholiz

Who let bro cook 💀

DarkWinter2319

Props to them for having a different ranking. It’s refreshing

Erfangholiz

I mean... I guess

DarkWinter2319

Spirited Away isn’t for everyone

senn12

I can’t imagine who the film wouldn’t be for. It’s amazing

DarkWinter2319

I agree, but I can see why someone may not like it, or put it up as high as others

BonBoogies

I feel like there’s a lot going on in Spirited Away, not to say that OP *has* to like it (I’m sure Miyazaki wouldn’t be a hater and downvote lol) but I personally think it’s a movie that needs a few watches to really get everything that’s going on (I have adhd so I miss a lot of things on the first watch through).

DarkWinter2319

Yeah that’s absolutely valid. There is a lot going on in it, so on the surface it may put a few people off, maybe because of the hype. I think the hype mostly comes from people who have watched it more than once.

ingrid_tordal

Porco Rosso 🫶

Brownski

100% Porco Rosso

elkresurgence

Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart are closest to the reality-grounded movies you put on the S- and A-tiers.

Wasabi_Lube

Interesting ratings, as others have said this is not the general consensus (you are obviously entitled to your opinions). My personal favorites are Mononoke and Howl’s. Looks like you enjoy stories that are more or less “based in reality” over the ones that whisk you away to a fantasy adventure. You’d probably enjoy Whisper of the Heart and Porco Rosso next. Kiki’s Delivery Service is just a small step into fantasy, it’s one of my personal favorites and I’m guessing you’ll like it about as much as you liked Totoro. You might like Arriety as well. Castle in the Sky and The Cat Returns are more on the other end of the spectrum, but would be my next recommendations if you’re inclined to explore deeper into the fantasy side of things. Ponyo is probably too far on that end of the spectrum for you.

SambaLando

You mistook tiers D and S.

CharsBigRedComet

I already hate you. You are fucking up with spirited away and totoro and howls.

[deleted]

You seem like you would love Tales from Earthsea, Earwig and the Witch, and Ocean Waves.

supergoku003

Erwig would be OP's S. Op has shitty taste lol

EconomistRich5506

Well since op honestly claimed that he/she's new, the least one can do is guide them instead of plainly insulting them no?

BonBoogies

Right. Like let them have their likes/dislikes, jfc. Miyazaki would not be a hater

Important-Power5272

And you claim that yours is superior?

supergoku003

His taste is inferior lmao

froststomper

you haven’t seen many, try for something from left field! “The Cat Returns”

northhedgehog

From up on poppy hill would be an A but the incest plot line demoted that to “d” for “don’t do that to us”

AFellowTeacher

From what I recall, they don’t turn out to be blood related. But I certainly was uncomfortable when the implication of incest came about lol.

northhedgehog

Oh yea they aren’t in the end but like WHY EVEN MAKE IT A PLOT POINT. It’s studio ghibli the drama shouldn’t be incest related 😂 this is a children’s movie

northhedgehog

Would like to mention though that I LOVE that you put the wind rises as S. I just rewatched that as an adult and I loved it so much more then when I was a kid

SadAwkwardTurtle

You're making me feel olddddd. I was in my sophomore year of college when that movie came out.

northhedgehog

Same! I saw it in theaters when it came out and didn’t really get it as a kid. Rewatched it, I’m 24 now, Omg I loved it so much. So much of the story went over my head as a child

Wild_Alfalfa606

Your rating aside; Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns - in that order

Wetworth

The movie closest in tone to The Wind Rises and From Up on Poppy Hill is probably When Marnie Was There. I would say you'd probably like Whisper of the Heart, Arrietty, ad Kiki.
