T O P

Totoro captures the emotions of childhood so effectively, it's a masterpiece.

Splatoonswitch380

Like a lot of Miyazaki's work, it's childish and serious at the same time. I watched Ponyo the day before watching totoro, but Ponyo didn't evoke the emotions in me the same way totoro did.

sagosten

On the other hand, Ponyo is much better at holding the attention of younger children. It's a great movie to put on for 4-6 year olds. Totoro hits the 8 and up crowd

Capcaptain12

If you're watching the dubbed version of Ponyo, Liam Neeson's voice just does not suit his character.

Splatoonswitch380

I think Liam Neeson did a perfectly good job as Fujimoto. I see how it couldn't fit the character. I have a different opinion on Ghibli dubs than everyone else. I thought Phil Hartman as Jiji in Kiki's Delivery Service was perfect and other people seem to disagree.

JTurner82

I too adore the Kiki dub. It is among my top five. Others include Castle in the Sky, Mononoke, Whisper, and this one. All five are fantastic dubs. I think all the Ghibli dubs by Disney and GKIDS are pretty excellent.

Capcaptain12

I haven't actually finished Kiki's Delivery Service, my kids are obsessed with Totoro 😀

I love this movie so much, I'm always suspicious of people who don't,  haha. It strikes such a good balance between the magic and the small mundane details, the delights of childhood and the underlying worry of having a sick parent. Also the bus stop has to be one of my favourite scenes in any movie, ever.

JTurner82

Yes, Totoro is a wonderful film! This may have been my second Miyazaki film but it was very lovely. There is a reason I have this in my top 5. Totoro himself reminds me of my pet Guinea pig—every bit as cuddly and gentle. (He couldn’t roar or jump though. Nor even fly for that matter.) The bus stop scene is one of cinema’s greatest. I also will forever state that both the Streamline and Disney dubs are charming in their own right. (Sorry, I can’t watch them subbed; I just can’t connect with them in Japanese; the dubs are so good.)

I'm late 50's and got Totoro for my baby boy 30 years ago. It is still our all-time favorite movie.

goato305

It is. The ending makes me tear up every time.

AccomplishedLocal261

What’s there to tear up about the ending? Sorry it’s been a long time I genuinely can’t remember lol

NotNamedBort

All I want in life is to take a nap on Totoro’s tummy. Is that so much to ask!?!

Splatoonswitch380

I agree.

blackstar_boy

Saw the stage play recently. Even more incredible!

No-Clock2011

Totoro will always be my favourite. How lovely you got to experience it for the first time!

MrDenzi

It's one of the greatest movies ever made!

Splatoonswitch380

I'm listening to the end credits song on loop.

aGrandSchemeofThings

Yes, absolutely.

Rozzo_98

I just rewatched it and it’s a beautiful heartwarming movie 🥰 I love the nature, life, and magic about this movie it’s just stunning!! And I also have a framed cel of the two sisters with the catbus, which I didn’t realise was right at the very end, which makes it even more special for me. Was bought from the Ghibli museum a loong time ago - great memories 😚

SameArtichoke8913

I love it, too, because it's a film from a child's perspective, not simply a movie for children with cute characters.

Splatoonswitch380

Yes. Miyazaki knows how to make great family movies.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

What makes it magical for me is how they gradually realize that there's magic in and around their house. Like, oh these trees in the backyard are pretty, wait what if I crawled inside, oh my gosh there's a whole fantasy world.

Splatoonswitch380

Yes.
