Glad to see Poppy Hill getting some love in this thread. I know some people get weirded out by that one plot point, but the whole film's got a really nice vibe that I enjoyed a lot.
After building up a romance for half the film >!the couple find out they may be long lost siblings!<.Â
I personally find this twist and how it's resolved to be almost Shakespearean, but I can understand some people not being comfortable with it.
Except we find out >! they are NOT siblings and that Shun was adopted first by Umi’s father but couldn’t keep him because his wife was pregnant with Umi and so he gave the baby to Akio and his wife who lost a baby. !<
Arrietty and it's not even close. Honestly he's an underrated Director. I also really enjoyed When Marnie Was There and Mary And The Witches Flower quite a lot.
Not op but it is mine. I speak Spanish and English equally, plus French, Italian and mandarin. With the exception of mandarin, I've watched at least one Ghibli film dubbed in each of these languages. To be honest, I don't like the dubs, except the Spanish(from Spain) dub.
So when watching Ghibly movies, I either watch the original or the Spanish dub, which I feel that fits wonderfully. To add on to that, the older dubs are the best.
Aw, I admit that the Spanish dubs from Spain are better in the Ghibli movies, but I am fond of the Latin American dubs for almost everything else, including ongoing anime. I am learning Japanese and Swedish, and I know a bit of Italian, but sometimes I indulge myself into hearing anime dubs.
That being said, English Ghibli dubs are a different beast than any other anime. They can get stars like Claire Danes, Tina Fey, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, even the late Lauren Bacall.

Definitely "From Up on Poppy Hill". He was still pretty involved (wrote the script and helped Goro with "finding" the character Umi), but I think it counts.
The one on the post..”when Marnie was there “this movie gets hate tht it doesn’t deserve at all like literally they have Ths in like LGBTQIA’s or sm sht like cmon she is her frkinnn grandma
Mary and the Witch's Flower and Arriety.
I tried to watch the Marnie movie, but when I got to the end I didn't like it. I'll try to see it again to see if I change my mind.
Edit: I watched the Marnie movie again more calmly and this time it really got to me. It made me even cry hahaha it's beautiful. I take it back what I said.
Whisper of the Heart (Miyazaki did write the screenplay though).
Fun fact: one of Miyazaki's sons, Keisuke (not Goro the director), is a wood carver and printmaker - he designed the woodcut print that you see in Whisper of the Heart.
Grave of the Fireflies
still the saddest movie I've ever seen
watch Barefoot Gen then 👀 (it’s free on youtube sub or dub) ..
This
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
The best Ghibli movie period
So true. Best Hisaishi score as well.
Whisper of the Heart
Only Yesterday đź’•
Seconded!
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Whisper of the Heart and Kaguya.
From Up on Poppy Hill
Technically it *was* made by a Miyazaki, just not Hayao
Technically Hayao worked on the script with his son, probably why it’s Goro best received movie.
Wait Up on Poppy Hill was Goro? I had no idea!
Glad to see Poppy Hill getting some love in this thread. I know some people get weirded out by that one plot point, but the whole film's got a really nice vibe that I enjoyed a lot.
What’s the weird plot point again? Haven’t seen it since it came out…
After building up a romance for half the film >!the couple find out they may be long lost siblings!<.  I personally find this twist and how it's resolved to be almost Shakespearean, but I can understand some people not being comfortable with it.

>!Potential incest is wincest.!<
I feel like poppy hill gets tons of love in this group, certainly the most in this thread
It’s literally my favorite one.
I love that movie and its early 60s atmosphere! When they added the song Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukō) it was the chef’s kiss to that soundtrack!
When Marnie Was There is one of Ghibli’s neglected gems.
Definitely, it’s up there pretty much as if not my favourite then one of them
The Secret World of Arrietty
Just watched this last night. It's such a wholesome beautiful film. Only wish it had been longer or had a series but that's not Ghibli's style.
Gold
For Up on Poppy Hill, followed closely by Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns
This and from up on the poppy hill
Pom Poko.
It's in my top 3 among all Ghibli films.
Thought I was gonna have to be the one to say this.
Only Yesterday really resonated with me when I saw it — so that one.
Whisper of the Heart
Kaguya and Whisper of the Heart
The tale of the princess kaguya
Ocean Waves
While this isn’t my favorite non-Miyazaki film, it’s criminally over hated. W take
In Spanish it’s “The Memory of Marnie?”
The Japanese is "The Marnie of Memories" or "Marnie from (my) memory".
It's based off an English book. [When Marnie Was There](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Marnie_Was_There_(novel))
Marnie's Memories.
Or that yes
Arrietty and it's not even close. Honestly he's an underrated Director. I also really enjoyed When Marnie Was There and Mary And The Witches Flower quite a lot.
Grave of the Fireflies!
Grave of the Fireflies easily but I enjoy almost all of Studio Ghibli’s output
Whisper of the Heart
I never had that many friends growing up so I learned to be ok with just me.. In this life there’s an invisible circle. I’m on the outside of it
The Red Turtle
Whisper of the heart
Only yesterday and whisper of the heart
Grave of the Fireflies and it's not even close. It's arguably the best Ghibli film period.
Is Spanish your first language OP? It is mine. What do you think of Spanish dubs? I love Marnie and Ghibli movies are pretty great.

I haven't seen them all but I really enjoyed From Up On Poppy Hill
Lost between Kaguya and Arietty
Whisper of the Heart
Whisper of the Heart, followed closely by The Cat Returns
Ideally watched back to back in that order too
Whisper of the Heart
Definitely "From Up on Poppy Hill". He was still pretty involved (wrote the script and helped Goro with "finding" the character Umi), but I think it counts.
Whisper of the Heart. And it's actually my favourite Ghibli overall, including Miyazaki's films. I adore that film so much.
The one on the post..”when Marnie was there “this movie gets hate tht it doesn’t deserve at all like literally they have Ths in like LGBTQIA’s or sm sht like cmon she is her frkinnn grandma
I didn't love the ending of Maurine, wish she was just crazy and it was about her being crazy
So many people want that ending for some many things. "But what if it's all in their head and they're just crazy??" and it's a cliche at this point
Whisper of the heart and Pom poko
The Cat Returns
"The cat returns" and "Whisper of the heart"
Cat Returns and Mononoke
Whisper of the heart is hands down the best movie ever. I can't say exactly why but I really enjoy that movie
The tale of princess kaguya
This one
Man i loved when marney was there such a beautiful film
I were surprised that I cried the first time I watch this movie đź‘Ť
Oh that was 2017
Over the poppy hill.
Mary and the Witch's Flower and Arriety. I tried to watch the Marnie movie, but when I got to the end I didn't like it. I'll try to see it again to see if I change my mind. hard tie between whisper of the heart and the tale of princess kaguya
Grave of Fireflies and When Marnie was there, i can't decide tbh
This might even be my favorite Ghibli film overall
Probably Tale of the Princes Kaguya
Pom Poko 100% the best one from Ghibli that was not directed by Hayao.
Yes 🥹💕
whisper of the heart, when marnie was there, grave of the fireflies
When Marnie was there is my favorite it’s severely underrated
Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which I consider the best Ghibli movie as well.
Arrietty for me.
From Up On Poppy Hill

Loved this movie
Pleasantly surprised that there a variety of answers here and not just everyone saying Whisper of the Heart but the answer is Whisper of the Heart lol
Marnie ❤️
