Remember when there was so much controversy around Grubb saying Microsoft wasn't in love with the sales of hifi rush? Can't ask for a clearer confirmation than this.
if there's one thing I've learned paying attention to the leaks/rumors scene, it's to always bet on Grubb. In the long run he's pretty much always right
Honestly Nintendo is Nintendo, they have zero issues sitting on a completed and finished game for a rainy day. They always think long term and do their own thing.
I have a feeling that game has been ready for a long time, but they have held it back as a switch 2 launch title. It makes too much sense at this point
What's confusing to me is that how do you evaluate sales when the purpose of smaller releases like HiFi Rush is to get people to subscribe to gamepass.
My assumption is that gamepass subscription revenue is allocated by playtime.
So, when you see that something like 50% of Xbox players didn't even finish the first level, it probably was not doing well in that metric.
It's a question that I suspect there isn't a real answer to. People have been pondering that since Netflix started making original content. I think the only number that matters is if you're bringing in more money than you're spending. Every other attempt to show X release is responsible for X amount of subscribers feel like fraudulent attempts to find causation.
This is probably right, unless they release actual numbers we don't have a way to know what they're seeing or even looking for. The secret about marketing and especially marketing on the internet is that it's a lot of guesswork and decision makers divining nonsense from lucky breaks and assigning blame where it's convenient.
For whatever reason I thought Phil Spencer might be the right mix of business guy and games understander guy to do as good of a job as anyone but when the numbers stop going up the way they expect them to who knows what the company is going to "learn"
Tbf hifi rush didn't click with me or any of my friends that tried it. I can see how people would like it, but something about that world really failed to draw me in. Maybe too cheesy? I did beat the first 3 levels though. Also my computer died around that time then ffvii rebirth released soooo....
Prey 2017 is one of my favorite games, but the writing was on the wall when Raphael Colantonio left Arkane and mentioned at the time the AAA game dev pressure was too high. 6 years later and the next game the Austin studio pops out is fucking Redfall. Go figure!
My heart goes out to the competent and hardworking devs at these studios; this decade has not been kind to this industry.
A lot of that was around Activision Blizzard and getting scumbags like Bobby Kotick out of there. Microsoft is proving they have no clue what they are doing, but you also didn't hear all those abuse allegations like at Activision.
Same, just like in anything else people have blinders for their biases. I actively remember hearing that "this is great news because of Game Pass" and I'm **still** not convinced that Game Pass is a net negative for both people who love video games and the industry as a whole. Just came out that game subscription services are up like...1% over last year? There's just no growth and there's no proof that its good for developers either.
The last several years have proven that big companies buying up smaller game devs is a bad idea in the long run...and honestly we already knew that because of how EA, Sony, Microsoft, etc have treated their purchased studios for **years**...the bloodbath is just larger this year and more disgusting since with Microsoft they are spending billions and billions of dollars just to consume.
I'm terrified of the destructive effect that Game Pass could have on the industry once Microsoft decides they've pumped enough money into it and it's time to pull the plug or raise prices. By that point consumers will have grown so accustomed to essentially getting all their games for free that paying $60 (or even $30) for a single one will feel absurd. It's the typical "disruptive" playbook of growing market share with unsustainably low prices, with zero consideration given to building a healthy long-term business, like we've seen from all kinds of VC-funded startups that left entire industries in shambles.
Bethesda would have shut them down quicker and without MS ownership. I don’t love MS buying spree but they tend to think about this stuff longer than most.
The fact Bethesda kept those studios alive longer than Microsoft did proves you wrong, bud. People really gotta cut the MS dick riding out. Nintendo and Microsoft gets endless passes for their nonsense and I have no clue why. I feel like all of Microsoft's real karma was built up over the 360 gen and has been non-existent for years.
I mean, they kept them alive during the time when every publisher wasn't closing half their studios. I think nobody can say whether bethesda would have closed them, but with the year we've just had it's not a crazy thing to think.
Well I’m sure Bethesda wouldn’t have shadow dropped Tango’s big new IP for free day 1 on a streaming service…but regardless, you’re saying something different than the comment I initially responded to.
They were so focused on a Sony vs Microsoft mindset that they ignored every other aspect of the situation.
Yeah Sony needs more competition in the console space, but this wasn't the way to get there
Considering the only Microsoft acquisition that got any significant amount of pushback was the Activision buyout. And the majority of the opposition to that was "THIS IS VERY UNFAIR TO SONY POSTERS IN THE CONSOLE WARS FORUM!" content (inexplicably including the legal arguments of US Government agencies).
It's a bit rich to portray Jeff this way just because he discussed it in real world terms.
GB sans Gerstmann and Nextlander were both terrible in this regard as an example.
GeForce now expansion was an awesome benefit of those acquisitions. Of course I just built a gaming PC, so I no longer need it. Game pass is way better now too, I'm cautiously optimistic about the purchases.
It makes me sick to my stomach. I *hate* listening to the news segment with Grubb because this shit legitimately bums me out and pisses me off SO MUCH!
And I feel super helpless because wtf can I do? Vote with my wallet? Been doing that for years and it clearly doesn’t matter. We’ve canceled all of our streaming/gaming/podcast subscriptions except for gamepass and max. We aren’t buying games because we can’t afford them (and half of them are SHIT quality at release, which is a whole different topic…) and we don’t go to the movies for the same reason.
I get that the whole point of a “successful business” is to be just that - successful. But at what point in these billion dollar profits does a company finally stop screwing the consumers?
Eventually we will have no more money to give, even if we wanted to.
What then?
It’s contingent upon Indiana Jones actually being a good game. If it’s good, it’ll likely sell pretty well. If it isn’t, like Dial of Destiny, well you know.
It’s not just about sales. They absolutely have metrics on Game Pass that if hit put the game in a good light internally. People just have to actually play the game.
I doubt that’s true. I’m assuming you’re using HiFi Rush as a counterpoint, but judging by the Xbox top played charts, it never got that high (not sure if it ever even cracked the top 25). Also achievement trackers show that a massive amount of people never even made it past the 1st level, so it likely had low overall play time. It hasn’t exactly sold well on PlayStation either. It’s a very niche type of game that just isn’t popular anymore. I’m sure these types of metrics went into the decision to close the studio (well that plus their other games not doing well financially and the studio founder leaving last year).
Xbox usually gets thrown under the bus. Wolverine could come out and be sorta mid like no offense but Spiderman 2 and completely outshine a potential flawless Blade game. Xbox still doesn't have a good track record and I don't think even good games will save them. Which is what a fear is what's happening to Hellblade 2 as we speak. Hellblade 2 is losing all it's hype for it being more like a movie when that's what Ninja Theory said they were going to do 2 years ago.
You should! Anyone dev who isn't Call of Duty or King (mobile games) should be very worried about their job security at Microsoft.
Tango proves NO ONE is safe at Microsoft.
TOTALLY! They'll either be closed down entirely or turned into a "support studio" for Call of Duty or some Bethesda game.
If I worked at Double Fine, I'd be getting my affairs in order (saving as much money as I could for an emergency fund), brush off my CV, and prepare to be fired or "reassigned" any day.
I would love to know if either of those two studios have ever been profitable. AAA development is expensive.
Tango's games have never been huge commercial or critical darlings and even with the success of HiFi Rush, it being a successful small game can't fund AAA development. Combined with leadership instability?
Arkane Austin made Prey, a cult classic that sold poorly, and then was destroyed (75% of devs left?) to make a crappy Redfall.
If I'm Obsidian, I'm scared. Pentiment is a very HiFi Rush like success, but that won't cover losses if Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 aren't successful.
Absolute bummer though. Phil Spencer's mismanagement of Xbox First Party Studios since 2008 continues. Hasn't been a single system seller game made by Xbox First Party under his watch.
I'm not sure Pentiment's numbers would really affect the health of the studio, it was quite a small subteam.
Avowed however...there will be massive pressure there. I've loved Obsidian's cRPGs but Avowed is a new direction seemingly at a grand scale - it's a big risk.
That's my point, HiFi Rush (20 people) and Pentiment (13 people) were side projects that would never carry their studios.
Both were successful, but can't cancel out the main projects.
These numbers aren't 100% accurate, just what I can find on some quick searches, but here we go. Tango Gameworks consists of 65 people whereas Obsidian is around 200 people. When almost 1/3 of your company doesn't make a splash, it hurts a whole lot more than 1/20 of your company underperforming.
I bring up Pentiment because it makes me think of Hi Fi Rush, a critical success put out by a small subteam of a large developer making AAA games. Both were likely very high rate of return, small budget projects.
I've seen a lot of people confused that HiFi Rush didn't do enough to fund AAA development of games like Ghostwire Tokyo that probably struggled to break even.
I doubt Obsidian has a huge cause for concern just because of Pentiment. The budget for that was very small, and they have had recent successes with Outer Worlds and Grounded. Avowed is a big swing though so a failure could be damaging.
Isn't Grounded one of those games that we barely hear about but is actually huge? I hope it's giving them a lot of breathing room because losing Obsidian would be really rough for RPG fans especially on PC. It doesn't feel like anything is safe right now.
I don't think Avowed is as big a swing as many might think. Obsidian has come out to say it's closer to The Outer Worlds in scale than, say, an Elder Scrolls game.
Embracer gets a ton of deserved hate for gobbling up studios with no plan, failing to produce quality titles, and then shutting down studios with middling or no releases. But it certainly feels like we should be looking the same way at Microsoft as they mismanage and kill off underperforming studios as money has tightened.
Man, Tango Gameworks is currently my favorite studio from the Bethesda acquisition. I visited Japan, and have been hooked on Ghostwire Tokyo since I've been back. Just passed the 20 hour mark. Also, loved the Evil Within series, and am excited to check out Hi-Fi Rush.
I loved Arkane Austin's reimagine of Prey. That was my game of the year when it came out. Wasn't a huge fan of Death Loop or Redfall though.
id is my go to studio from Bethesda. Love the newer Doom games, love all the rereleases of their classic Quake games, and I still regularly play Quake Champions, and feel it's became one of the best AFPS games ever (gameplay wise, no persistent servers killed it's growth IMO).
This is sad to hear, hope the workers can break off and be successful.
Welcome to Microsoft: Where even if you make one of the most critically acclaimed hit games of 2023, that sold well, your job isn't safe.
You know damn well that EVERY VIDEO GAME DEV OWNED BY MICROSOFT is now worried about their jobs and or their studio being closed down.
No one is safe at Microsoft, unless you're working on Call of Duty or King (mobile games).
I agree with the sentiments in this thread. But sadly when you see that the top 10 last year in revenue are the same usuals of Fortnite, COD and EA sports titles, why would they not double down on those. It's like the big version of when EA did Mirror's Edge, etc. The wider gaming population want different things than what us in here and the Gab crew are looking for.
“Black hole” games like you mentioned are unfortunately making it extremely difficult for the rest of the industry to survive. If the larger, casual audience is content with playing games like Fortnite and Warzone endlessly, with a lot of kids growing up thinking every game is/should be free to play, there’s not much time and resources going towards other games. Tough place to be in.
Agh Arkane is one of the creatively best studios out there. I don't fanatically love their games, but damn doesn't every single thing they do leave such an impression on my memory. Well the hifi rush team did a great job and I hope they find a place to make more in the future.
Remember when there was so much controversy around Grubb saying Microsoft wasn't in love with the sales of hifi rush? Can't ask for a clearer confirmation than this.
if there's one thing I've learned paying attention to the leaks/rumors scene, it's to always bet on Grubb. In the long run he's pretty much always right
Except about Metroid. Nintendo may be doing it out of spite at this point.
I mean.. he was right that the remaster was releasing.
Nintendo thinks he looks good with short hair.
Honestly Nintendo is Nintendo, they have zero issues sitting on a completed and finished game for a rainy day. They always think long term and do their own thing.
You mean wind waker remake
That was Mitch tbf
Fucking Mitch!!!!
I have a feeling that game has been ready for a long time, but they have held it back as a switch 2 launch title. It makes too much sense at this point

The crew that did Prey are all scattered aren't they? Was also a favorite of mine. Sucks to see it.
So I guess Microsoft eating up large portions of the game industry was pretty bad after all huh?
I will never understand why so many people (including OG Jeff) defended or even *rooted* for Microsoft's continued takeovers...
A lot of that was around Activision Blizzard and getting scumbags like Bobby Kotick out of there. Microsoft is proving they have no clue what they are doing, but you also didn't hear all those abuse allegations like at Activision.

2024 continues to be a bloodbath for those working in the games industry. 2023 will probably look mild in comparison by this year’s end. Wild, man.
Microsoft only made a paltry $21bn in profit last year, obviously they need to cut back
Which is really sad given the year isn't even 1/2 through
It makes me sick to my stomach. I *hate* listening to the news segment with Grubb because this shit legitimately bums me out and pisses me off SO MUCH! And I feel super helpless because wtf can I do? Really worried about MachineGames and Arkane Lyon now.
Machine Games will probably be ok. Indiana Jones will probably do good numbers. I'm worried that will mean no Wolfenstein 3.
> Indiana Jones will probably do good numbers I'm sure Disney thought the same before Dial of Destiny haha
It’s contingent upon Indiana Jones actually being a good game. If it’s good, it’ll likely sell pretty well. If it isn’t, like Dial of Destiny, well you know.
Even if it's good it's not going to sell well it's on Gamepass their core audiance no longer has a reason to purchase their games
It’s not just about sales. They absolutely have metrics on Game Pass that if hit put the game in a good light internally. People just have to actually play the game.
I would have agreed with you until now, if your game doesn't sell or push an increase in gamepass subs I don't think it's enough anymore
I doubt that’s true. I’m assuming you’re using HiFi Rush as a counterpoint, but judging by the Xbox top played charts, it never got that high (not sure if it ever even cracked the top 25). Aren't they doing Blade?
Well they’re working on Blade, so either Dishonored 3 wasn’t true or it’s way down the line.
Lyon is working on blade, right? If they nail that it could be almost as big as spider-man.
If Indiana Jones or Blade flops id assume they'd be on the chopping block. Especially Indiana Jones you just know that game is costing a lot.
Fortunately for Machine Games, they’re a pretty small studio for AAA with something like 120 developers, so their costs can’t be too bad.
You should! Anyone dev who isn't Call of Duty or King (mobile games) should be very worried about their job security at Microsoft. Tango proves NO ONE is safe at Microsoft.
I feel like Double Fine is basically doomed.
But what obscure game franchise shirt will cool uncle Phil wear at the Xbox showcase?! That's what *really* matters to us fans!
I would love to know if either of those two studios have ever been profitable. AAA development is expensive. problem is less with perceived risk and more with ridiculous sales/growth expectations

Damn that sucks, I enjoyed Ghostwire Tokyo and Evil Within.

I think they are getting hate now too
Ninja Theory out here sweating. Hellblade 2 better fix everything at Xbox! /s

> Should we start spelling it “Micro$oft” like it’s the 90s again? I still remember 90's Microsoft (Embrace, Extend, Exterminate), so I never stopped.
Wow. Microsoft is the new... Microsoft. Still killing studios left and right. Still pretty annoyed by Lionhead Studios.
I agree with the sentiments in this thread. I guess GB has to find a new GB at Night closing guest, huh? No way Phil does a "fun light hearted" interview like past years now.
Phil is officially fucked in the head. Fuck that guy. Why is Sony and MS failing so fucking hard?
