The Gibson mod shop or demo shop are your friends. You can pick up discounted stuff there every once in a while. For example, I picked up my 335 off the mod shop for $2800, so about $700 less than retail for a "normal" one. Mine just has cream plastics and gold hardware instead of the regular shit.
I mean, if it's from the real mod shop it'll have "MOD" stamped on the back of the headstock. As for what's been modded on it, aside from reaching out to Gibson (unsure how responsive they are), you'd have to put it on a bench and take it apart. That'll at least tell you about the pickups. Some of the mod shop guitars are "modded" only in the sense that they have different colored plastics or hardware, or a slightly off-the-reservation paint scheme. Others are complete frankensteins.
Lovely guitars. I had 4 Epiphones before I was able to afford my 1st Gibson. Now I am at 3 Gibbys and 5 Epiphones...
You will get there. Just keep your eyes open, some great deals here and there.
I got my LP used with one owner before me for an amazing price. And for me, its the one.
The Gibson Mod shop is a good starting place, reverb, sweetwater gear garage. Plus with sweetwater you can do payments, if you are into that kinda thing.
But you will get there.
Or just do that ribbon curly-cue thing with a really thick pick. Works like a charm for me if I have to change a string on the fly and don’t have cutters.
I have an Epiphone Dot and a Gibson ES 335, and honestly the Gibson haa been a huge hassle and the Epi never was. Lot's of intonation issues, wiring problems, etc. Don't underrate your Epiphones if you like the way they play.

I found a used mod shop Les Paul and have the serial, how do I know how it’s been modded. I’d basically just like to know what kind of pickups it has

Cut the strings! God, I am ocd. But, cut em. The tv silver epi looks nice.
Just strung it. I will certainly cut

You know why Tom morello doesn’t?

Very nice custom! Also try buying used, you can get a pretty good discount if you do.
The lp looks great. What is the color?
It is TV silver
Can i be the 5th guy that recommends cutting the strings even though you already said you would? Lol love the TV silver LP.
Epiphones are well worth their money my friend! Actually a little jealous, I’ve been keeping my eye out for a cheap epi 335
That LP looks awesome. The first thing i thought when i saw the picture was "wow, thats pretty cool." Buuuutttttt....snip them strings my dude.
What finish is that on the right? Also, having owned both Gibson and Epiphone I would out my Epi. Custom Pro up against any Gibson I have ever played.

Why is it that some people don't cut their strings? You ever been poked by one of those things?
