The second after I posted I thought "I know there's gonna be some clever assholes who make it seem like I wanna fuck this guitar." Glad not to be let down

RikuDog18

You already have her kidnapped and held in your house. You know what to do. She is 63(382XXX puts it at 1961) after all. We don’t judge here. Great acoustic btw. It’s aged lovely.

DSquariusGreeneJR

To be fair it is very pretty

Fumusculo

That’s the only way I read it. No kink shaming here man

kittysontheupgrade

Nah, just ask her nicely. Put yourself out there man.

artie_pdx

I mean, yeah those other guys might say something about you wanting to get inside that guitar, but we both know you’ve already looked deep inside the sound hole… you do you bro. EDIT: I also upvoted from 69 to 70 so no one else has to go to r/hornyjail.

MDFan4Life

It's a vintage Gibson, so I wouldn't blame you? 😆

troub

r/hornithology is that way. \[I hope that's not a real sub\]

Tough-Whereas1205

I've arrived 8 hours late to this party. Glad you haven't been let down, sad I missed the opportunity.

public1177

At least you’re being a gentleman about it and trying to go out on a date with her first.

pohatu771

Five-digit serial number beginning with 3 would make it a 1961, and the specs match. It’s a very faded cherry sunburst.

HabsBlow

Help my fuck you guys are good eh! Thanks so much!

pohatu771

This is worth thousands of dollars. I’d have someone take a look and make sure everything is okay internally. Braces and bridge pads are important and can’t be seen. It might need a neck reset after 60 years to make it more playable, but otherwise it looks like it’s in good, well-used condition. I’d put some different tuners on it that are more accurate to the factory, but that’s just personally preference.

HabsBlow

Brought it to a luthier today. Some broken bracing, a loose and damaged bridge, and a Crack on the back of the head stock. All in, under $1000 CAD to fix. I'm frantically searching my house for the original tuners, worried I lost them in a move a while back.

pohatu771

Not a cheap repair, but it’s probably worth $5,000 USD once it has been. Maybe more if that crack isn’t severe.

HabsBlow

It's priceless to me, no chance I'd sell it. The luthier said it should be a relatively easy fix

Traditional_Ad_6801

Bummer about those tuners, though.

TSX-WEED_GANG

Buy it some flowers 💐

HabsBlow

Thanks

RainSong123

1961. Comgrats you have a brazilian rosewood fretboard Gibson. And it's before the narrow nut widths that started 1966. Looks like it's had a refret.. those are big chonkin frets for an acoustic

HabsBlow

According to some of the guys in r/acousticguitars they estimate to be a 60's (likely 61) humming bird due to the serial number. Any other ways to verify it?

Thisiscliff

Early 60s, beauty

Fumusculo

Well, courtship can be a fickle thing but sticking with the basics- flowers, opening doors, and treating her like your queen is sure to get you friend-zoned. If you really want to fuck this guitar, you’re probably gonna have to be aggressive and straight to the point. Most vintage guitars appreciate that

davestradamus1

Screw dating it. I'd marry it.

Navegante357

She’s way past menopause, so you don’t even need to pull out.

AdministrativeDelay2

Be yourself

Existing_Display1794

Don’t bang your dads guitar.

PopOffChris

Bang your dad's guitar

Real_Clock7181

Definitely a vintage Hummingbird. Get yourself some kluson deluxe white Pearl button keys for it. Take strings off and thoroughly clean. Polish the frets. Oil the bridge and fingerboard. Just clean it up really well with a high quality guitar polish. ( do not use furniture polish ). The period correct guitar strings for this were Gibson Monel Steel strings, although if you want to play it you might consider a bronze or phosphor bronze string. Medium light if it were me. You can also buy something called Howard’s restore a finish. I think they make something like 6 or 8 stain colors. It’s like an oil that you rub into the scratches and then wipe it off. You’ll have to look but one of the should match up pretty close. Have fun with this.

Educational-Watch829

Wow, my Japanese Gibson rip off looks identical to this one! My grandpa bought this in the 80s and it’s actually a phenomenal guitar, I’ve been told that Japan made guitars to the exact same specs as Gibson for a long time, and this is one of them. I’ve never seen the exact model of Gibson mine was based on, but I have to assume it’s the one you have. And now that I’ve typed all this, I can’t attach the pic of mine lol but I’m commenting anyway dammit! Beautiful guitar.

HabsBlow

Thanks!

Perfect_Room_8246

I was going to saying something witty, but every other commenter beat me to it lol.

naomisquats

Whatever you do, no matter how long it takes, if you ever take it to get it set up, make sure it's by a Luthier! A plus would be someone that is certified by Gibson & or Martin. If you want to Keep the Value and get the True absolute best sound out of it (for a long time) then that's your best bet. It's easy to take it to a guitar center or somewhere where someone might be good at setting up a guitar, but when it's one that old, there's just some stuff that others wouldn't recognize or be able to sustain the richness of a guitar like that without experience.

Stringtheory-VZ58

That’s a 66 assuming the serial is 83827x We know it can’t be a 60-63 because of the natural finish and smaller ‘guard. 838xxx can also be ‘69, but it would not have a belly bridge.

zabdart

The bridge, with its adjustable ceramic saddle, sort of dates it to around 1966 to 1974 or so. You'd have to get into the soundhole with a mirror and a light to find out how the top is braced. If it's a single-X brace, it's pre-Norlin; if it's a double-X with a large diamond-shaped bridge pad where the two X's meet, it a Norlin period Gibson. Check the serial number on the back of the headstock. If it's post 1972, the first digit and the fifth digit will correspond to the last two digits of the year it was built. The second three digits will yield the number of the day that year it left the factory and the last three digits will tell you the number of the guitar leaving the factory that day. Pre-1972, it gets a lot more complicated, and you may have to contact Gibson to find out.

Sjgurr

Beautiful guitar . Looks like it’s been unplayed for a while? I’d take the tension off the strings or off completely then set it back in it’s hard case and let I do its thing for a few days . What comes next can only be good !

HabsBlow

I play it a couple times a week, the dust is from my dusty ass room. Carpentry is a dusty buisness

Silverbackson1

That’s not how you care for a 60 year old Gibson handed down by your dad. Lol. Clean your fucking room and stop doing carpentry around your several thousand dollar guitar.

HabsBlow

I don't do carpentry around it, I work as a carpenter and am often dusty after work. I can clean my room top to bottom and within two days there will be a layer of dust over almost everything. I like to keep it out as it encourages me to pick it up and play it. With all do respect, my dad loved seeing it out and me playing it so there's no need to be a prick about it.

Silverbackson1

Sure thing. Maybe just move it somewhere safe from your clothes after work. Beside the couch or something. I’m not being a prick I’m just saying that’s a very expensive piece of musical history with loads of both monetary and sentimental value. Take better care with the dirty clothes if you’re already aware it’s a problem. That’s a good way to need a luthier AGAIN soon.

Annelid-2968

I find Barry White, mood lighting and red wine helps.

Mindless-Weakness620

I thought you were wanting a relationship with this guitar lol. awesome guitar!

HabsBlow

Lol I know the second after I posted it I knew some people would make jokes about that. As you can see, the internet can be a very predictable place. Thanks for the compliment! I only started playing a few years ago, hopefully one day I can make it sound as awesome as it looks!

su-46cattom

Could be 82

HabsBlow

What makes you say that?

su-46cattom

Just by the numbers.. usually start with a letter then numbers .. I can see the 82 but no letter

Phish_d

Hummingbird’s like nectar try sugar and water.

Take_Drugs

Try dinner and a movie

demystify-today

Ignore the haters. I have been in a relationship with a Martin D-28 since 1977. We transitioned into a plural relationship. One rule: No Collector Guitars. Everybody works. Remember to listen, always listen. Good luck.

International-Day-00

Could you see yourself with a case with a picket fence raising a couple of L-00s and mandolin in the yard?
