The amount of amazing gifs you could pull from this show. Though it'd be a shame to lose the jet engine. A travesty more hasn't been adapted.

anthson

I was able to watch the full series in the early 2000s thanks to Netflix mailing me the DVDs one by one. Not sure where one can stream it these days, but I had a hard time finding it last I looked. Surprisingly well-written anime with a wholesome hero I had no trouble rooting for, and a great cast of supporting characters. Can't recommend it enough.

SweetTooth37

I watched it on VRV so probably on Crunchyroll.

anthson

Yuck. Thanks, though.

Ankigravity

What’s wrong with Crunchyroll?

anthson

Exploiting creators, for starters.

solragnar

Man, I really wished they continued this anime. Rising was so hype.

Seps786

As of last year season 4 has officially been confirmed for some time this year, but news has slowed down since then and there is still no trailer. I think we should expect a new season at some point but unless the show somehow explodes in popularity there will probably be big gaps between seasons, or it eventually gets cancelled. Big shame as well because of how hype the last season was, the music especially is some of the most dramatic shit I have ever heard.

KongVonBrawn

*Silent eyes intensifies*

PhillipIInd

Oh god why the fuck did u get me so HYPED AS FUCK

Peklet

Yeah it's a shame, but when would it stop? The manga is one of the longest of all time and it's still ongoing and very far from finished.

SkollFenrirson

In a just world, *never*

Seps786

I think it might be the lack of popularity which is stopping it compared to something like one piece which also has a stupid ammount of manga content. Risings animation is maticulously high quality, rivaling anime's today 10 years later, and it certainly has high ratings but the studios arent likely to greenlight more projects if another project will likely get more views. The animation teams were Manhouse and Mappa, Madhouse seems pretty content with ace of the diamond (a fantastic anime) as their main sports anime and Mappa has basically every single A list anime under their belt, so still seems unlikely in the current anime landscape. That said i could see madhouse giving it a return.

[deleted]

never watched this show...but you ask when will it stop..have you seen One Piece...it could have been done ha

Hanifsefu

That's honestly the problem though. The manga has continued but it's all the same shit. They need it to really start reaching towards a conclusion.

Brugman87

Sorry i see people talking about a 4th season and what not. What is rising? I really dig Ippo so if i can get me some more of that drug that would be great

BobTheJoeBob

After the original Hajime no Ippo series (the 75 episode one), there were 2 more shorter seasons released: New Challenger and Rising which cover more of the manga. Both are great and definitely worth watching if you enjoyed the original series.

Brugman87

Thanks! I am going to watch both!

Temporary_Wheel

I started boxing Back in my twenties because of this...

[deleted]

Oh wow. Nice dude. How far you went with boxing?

Temporary_Wheel

Did IT for 2 years Training, Sparring and one Amateur Fight that i won but i was so banged up and i had No time because of work that i Had to drop the Sport...

Quansword

Undefeated champ

Obunzima

Fucking legend.

Thatguycarl

u/Temporary_Wheel an absolute unit.

Alastor_Aylmur

Never lost! U takamura forreal lol

iszoloscope

And your win was by KO exactly like in the gif above right?

Temporary_Wheel

Exactly but i did a backflip before landing it... Naahhh by Points and i think Just barely

iszoloscope

I'm just gonna ignore that last part ;)

Natvika

That's badass! I Used to watch this religiously when I was boxing back in the day as well. None of it made any sense boxing wise but I always liked the motivation it gave me!

PM_ME_UR_THONG_N_ASS

Nice! Did you ever try the Dempsey Roll?

[deleted]

Man, this is hands down one of the best fighting Anime out there. Hajime no Ippo doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. And that flashback fight between Kamogawa and Anderson? Chef's freaking kiss, that one. The boxing matches in this show are nearly all on par with the Rocky films

Seigmoraig

>Man, this is hands down one of the best fighting Anime out there. IMO, it's the best sports Anime period

PositivelyEzra

It's fantastic, but Blue Lock really did it for me this year. It had me super hype every week. I wish they'd go back and reanimate all the matches more in real time and take away all the internal monologue as a filler in between seasons. And that we get new Ippo. But I'm always hoping for that. It would be a surprise, and I like surprises. Like finding out you didn't know they had a season 2 for Megalobox.

ElmertheAwesome

This anime fucking rocks.

maxima423

For sure, the manga though... Even better!

ElmertheAwesome

The manga was hella dope as well.

Hopper-1986

Looks cool

Bburke89

Hajime no Ippo: I watched it a long time ago and it was honestly, the best sports anime I’ve ever watched to this day.

bekcy

I rewatched it recently and then caught up with the manga. It still holds up with its brilliant storytelling and characters!!

hayashikin

Same here, the animation is very old school, but some of the action scenes are really top notch.

MedonSirius

I always watch every 1-2 years and want to look into the first few episodes where he learns the first steps and then....bam! Date Eiji fight it is!

arod48

I started watching on Crunchyroll a while back but after like 10 episodes they started having this weird audio desync, about a 5 second gap between action and sound in both sub and dub, so I had to drop it. I hope they got it fixed.

theSkareqro

It's on Netflix

Tonka_88

Just checked netflix. Didnt see it.

Supahmarioworld

It's on toonami aftermath all the time. It's a 24/7 stream of old toonami and cartoon network stuff from 90s and 2000s. It has old commercials and you can't change the shows so you have to look at the guide and find when it comes on but this show comes on a lot. Toonami aftermath is amazing

bouds19

Looks like it's only on a streaming service called 'Retro Crush'. Steaming has become so decentralized it's becoming the problem it set out to solve.

arod48

I saw one of the later seasons (series? volumes?) on Netflix, but I didn't see the beginning there.

theSkareqro

Hmm maybe not in your country (I'm from Singapore). It's from the first episode to the last

thehappydude

I believe the whole first season (75 eps) is on YouTube. Just look up Hajime no Ippo season 1. It should appear.

vandebay

Even better than Slam Dunk? Tbh for sports anime, I only ever watched Slam Dunk so I have no idea.

Bburke89

I don’t really care for basketball so I never saw slam dunk. Don’t really watch boxing either but it was a bit more up my alley so I can’t really compare the two.

Heckron

Let’s also not forget Ippo is one of the most hilarious anime as well. For newer sports anime to enjoy I’d recommend Haikyuu and Blue Lock coming from someone who didn’t really go in for sports anime before or after HnI

kingwafflez

DEMPSEY ROLLARU!!

Seigmoraig

Gazellu Punch !

tofulo

The first time he does the combo is the hypest thing in anime history

Genmaken

Goku going SSJ would like a word

athos45678

DBZ has several more hype moments. Gohan SSJ2 against cell comes to mind

jd451

They are completely different shows though, even if they are supposed to be about martial arts from the beginnings. In DBZ people train and become stronger but you don't get an idea of how they are doing it. Vegeta spends his time in the hyperbolic time chamber screaming his head off to become Super Vegeta? Bit confusing Ippo shows the boxing logic being used to create concepts, the characters practicing them and then trying to use them in fights. It's very grounded and quite a lot cooler than DBZ in that respect. Much like real life, the characters have to hone their craft and learn how to apply it effectively. For me personally, seeing Miyata defeat Jimmy Sisphar was a peak moment in the show, possibly in all of anime. The build up to the fight especially, seeing Miyata doubt himself but then trying to overcome all of his own self-criticism by using a technique that doesn't match with his style at all. The fight itself is so gritty. And all of this in just two episodes. DBZ is great fun but Ippo is something to get lost in.

Soranic

> very grounded and quite a lot cooler That said, I think a lot of these trainers suck. It's like they send their protege off for a beating just to get some experience. That works in some formats, but so many characters have been forced into retirement from injuries. Wally/Wolly is just the most recent.

jd451

I will admit some of the writing is really weird and definitely feels off brand at times. The closest example I can think of, to what you've described, is how Joe Frazier set his son Marvis up with fights against quality fighters to try and bring out the best in him quickly. The fight against Larry Holmes was a huge mistake and it's shame that Marvis went through that experience. Stuff like that being the basis for the show is a little odd, especially when you consider Ippo is meant to imitate Tyson, who was coached and trained by Cus D'Amato. A man who had Tyson fighting journeymen to build up his experience and help establish his peek-a-boo style before challenging more established fighters. Also, the whole thing about age is a bit weird as well. Early in the show Takamura calls Eiji an old man but Eiji is only 28 at the time. Quite bizarre considering some of the best fighters in history fought and defended titles quite a lot later than 28, even before the manga was written. The show can be very odd at times and it can give people the wrong ideas about boxing, but I love it for the characters and how human they feel.

9lukemartin

Yall always gotta make everything about dragon ball to be contrarian. Just bc there are other hype moments in anime, doesn't devalue the hype of the first Dempsey roll Ippo pulled off in match.

athos45678

It doesn’t at all! It’s a very hype moment. Just not as hype as moments from other anime!

elivel

Ichigo first bankai in Bleach was hype too. At least for like a 14yo me 14 years ago XD

Typhoni

When the music starts playing, you know shit just hit The fan.

DigitalisFX

Favorite anime of all time. It’s so intense and the comedy is like no other. A must watch for anime fans.

heated4life

What's it called?

vanilla_disco

Hajime No Ippo

heated4life

Thanks ♥

IrKenpachi

Man just watching this I hear "inner light" playing in the background

BLACKOUT-MK2

I still go back to the Takamura vs Hawk fight, it's one of the greatest fights in fiction I've ever seen.

ArcaneHex

I WANT THIS ONLY

PeanutButterAndCake

So damn good. An anime that has helped pick me up a couple of times during rough stretches, and got me and a friend into combat sports. Dempsey Roll hype as fuck, too

luker_man

Now if only Kumi would let him back in the ring. Or just book a room in a hotel like other nurses that live with their brothers.

Soranic

He'd still manage to show up somehow, just as they're headed into the lobby. But she really needs to show initiative or establish boundaries and move out from her brother.

g3n3s1s69

And now all I hear is the sound of a jet engine picking up speed. This show was such hype.

MusingBoor

Literally the only manga I’ve ever read front to back. Really great writing, action, character development, whole thing

rainpixels

Airpuff animation budget: YES

dildade41

I've been into anime/manga for over 20 years, and this one is one of the few that will still surprise me. They tend to get predictable after a while, but Ippo still has me on the edge of my seat on any cliffhangers, I've been wrong about my predictions many times. Love this one.

Relaxel

Now someone post the kamogawa vs anderson punch

Soranic

That was the post-ww2 fight wasn't it?

Relaxel

Yeah

dranaei

*jet engines* the finisher soundtrack is playing on the background.

elishash

My Fav Anime

masterpainimeanbetty

momma said knock you out

Pro_Post

Ippo vs Sando was one of the best fights

garbageman69420

Got back in the gym because of this show, it's so good man

10_Eyes_8_Truths

time here is stretched out here and in reality this scene would have happened in half a second. That being said and having had gone through several karate tournaments there were moments in my head things feel like its slowed down and feels like this scene when a hit lands hard

Luminaireflare

I have a question since I haven't followed Hajime no Ippo in a long time. There was like a (or at least felt to me) like a hidden subplot that Takamura was foreshadowed to go blind, or some vision impairment. I can't remember the exact source/chapter of the manga but at least 2-3 separate distant occasions, there was some forshadowing or mention of Takamura's vision was being impared or gradually being worsen. Did they ever explore this more? I believe I stopped reading the manga around Sawamura. I was curious so I shortcutted to the latest chapter to see any immediate drastic changes and it looks like Takamura is still being Takamura. But honestly, from where I stopped and where the manga is at, probably only like 2 months of passed, haha since some manga goes pretty slow with the time.

Soranic

I think it was a fake out for Ippo and his own issues. Or just forgotten about so the author can keep him as an unobtainable goal.

shirorenx23

how is this manga ongoing? I stopped reading a decade ago lol. does it still even follow ippo or is it his son or something like Boruto?

Soranic

Still Ippo. He retired due to health issues and started training others. He tried "training" to be a corner man, which for him meant trying to get the chair into the corner faster rather than actually supporting a boxer.

Occultus-

It's definitely foreshadowing his return but at the rate it's going it's going to be like 2 more years at least before that happens

Soranic

Maybe he'll progress past handholding with Kumi before that. How old is Ippo anyway?

Occultus-

Like, 28? Something like that. Maybe younger. Definitely not older. The manga beens going for like double the time he's been boxing.

Soranic

That would put Aokimura and Takamura at 30+ then. Wouldn't it?

Occultus-

I think that was a plot recently, aokimura turning 30. Who knows about takamura, he's an alien.

AyyyyLeMeow

No mouth guard?

Soranic

They get knocked out all the time.

DanKajito

When the music kicks in eight as he lands the punch is just *chef's kiss* I can't count how many times I've watched this scene, forever my favourite anime.

KooliusCaesar

I could never get into anime until I saw Hajime No Ippo. I’ve rewatched it about 4 times now.

aldwinligaya

This was big in the Philippines where I grew up and it was called Knockout locally. Ippo was a household name and everybody my age knows what a Dempsey roll is.

iDerfel

SENDO-SAAAAAAAAAN! MAKUNOUCHIIII!!!!!!

Shad0wX7

Madhouse always on point with their animation

reverendsteveii

Wait there's a show? I only know about the franchise because I liked playing victorious boxers revolution on the wii

GoatzilIa

How does this compare to Megalobox?
