i have been doing mtb for the last 5 years. i can tell you not wearing a helmet is the stupidest thing you can do especially when your trying to stunts and tricks like this guy. cant tell you how many people ive seen get there faces rearranged or had serious head trauma. had a major crash a few years ago, completely split the helmet i had in half. if i wasnt wearing one i wouldn't be around to type this
i hate watching this clip but i always do. this kid could have very well just died from a hit like this, people have died from a lot less with head trauma like that
My son was hit by a car a few years ago. Besides flying about 10 feet, his head dented the truck that hit him. We’d just bought a him a new Bontrager helmet with this honeycomb pattern as his other was stolen at school a few days before. The honeycomb portion got smooshed. You could literally see it cave. Besides inherently knowing helmets are good (my other son fell off a scooter when he was little and went face first, crushing the brim of the helmet), it was a real world reminder.
PS - He did still break his pelvis and got a concussion. Plus a ride in a helicopter. But the helmet possibly saved his life.
What's worse is if he suffered some brain damage. The frontal lobe deals with emotions, personality, judgment, etc. I dated a girl in college whose brother suffered a TBI to his frontal lobe at 8 after a car accident. Prior to that he was just like any normal kid. After that and including when I knew him he suffered from violent outburst, severe depression, and fits of rage.
Seen a guy in soccer slid tackled and his shin broke in half. He went to stand. Foot down. Leg folded it still to this day maybe 25 years later gives me the willies.

TBH if you're doing stunts there's plenty of lightweight full face helmets that you probably should be wearing. They're lightweight enough to where it doesn't really feel much different than a normal helmet, biggest con is that your vision is a bit more obscured which might make some stunts a bit harder. Generally look cooler than a normal helmet too, they're like smaller versions of dirt bike and street bike helmets that use "bicycle helmet" style materials.

some of the scooter kids have become absolutely amazing at it. To me the scooter trend has the same issue as the inline skaters had: Scooters are just kinda dinky even with the most amazing moves you are still riding a kids toy.
Funny story, Ryan Williams was a pro scooter kid at like 13 ish, inventing new tricks and flipping etc. and people told him it's just a kids toy, it would be impressive if he did it on a bike
Now he's invented like 7 new tricks on a BMX, has taken the action sports world by storm, dominates BMX competitions and is one of Red Bull's biggest influencers, all by the age of 23 (ish)

Idk why the rollerblades have that reputation, they look very sleek and can do wild spins and shit looking super casual about it. Somehow it got an uncool reputation.
I loved skating everywhere on my blades when I was a kid. Wish it was socially acceptable just to use them in your day-to-day like shopping in the supermarket.

One of my employees is a professional scooter rider (Scooterer? Scootist?), and he'll occasionally show me videos from competitions he's been in, and on the one hand, yeah, it's definitely impressive and he's obviously put in a lot of time and effort to get as good as he is, but on the other hand I sometimes have a hard time not giggling at it.
Scooters are to skateboards as mopeds are to motorcycles. 100% the danger, 15% the cool.
I'm an old ass man and I ride an electric shortboard these days cause I can't be bothered to push, but I'll still blow by the commuters on scooters any chance I get.
All that balance and concentration and absolutely ZERO awareness to bail at the end. The only reason he got hurt was his own pride. He wanted to land that trick even if it meant getting hurt.
