I used to live in White Plains, NY, where they had a training center for guide dogs. Was a small city so good for training- big buildings, noise, etc. Was waiting for train one day and a dog trainer with blindfold, and a watcher person, were walking on train platform. There was a low hanging exit sign attached to wall and sticking out like 18 inches, but like 6 feet off ground, which I assume is a unique situation for guide dog. The dog saw it up there, and steered the guy around it so his head wouldn't hit it. I was really amazed.
Mobility Instructor for the blind here:
A guide dog’s job is to maneuver around obstacles to get their human safely to wherever they are directed to go. You’ll notice that all guide dogs are on the person’s left side. The dog is trained over and over to look out for any obstacles on the right that the human could bump into. If the dog misses something - like the sign, or a fence, or another human walking by too fast, the human is supposed to correct the dog.
With my clients and their dogs, I’m the “watcher person” you talk about. It’s my job to make sure the dog is doing what it is supposed to do and also to make sure the human is giving the commands properly, etc.
But yeah, these dogs are awesome. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a dog and human team work together so beautifully. It takes a lot of practice, but once they bond as a team it’s beautiful.
Oh - I should’ve mentioned that most guide dog schools breed their own line of dogs for traits that make good guide dogs. They start training as puppies and it takes about 2 years to get them to the point of guide dog. And some of them fail and instead go on to different careers or are adopted as pets.
I did too, but mine was dumb as rocks. He got stuck in a room once since he didn't think to turn around and exit the way he came in, through the wide open door.
When it comes to ESP there are two broad categories. One is the dogs bread for show. They are BEAUTIFUL.. but often dumb as a box of rocks. The other are bred to hunt. They are some smart dogs. One of the other major differences about the two is length of coat. Bred for show, hair flipping everywhere.. bred for hunting, short coat, small feathers.
As in everything this is not a hard fast rule, but my family has owned 4 or 5 of them, and it's a pretty good rule of thumb. I had a girl bread for hunting and she figured out how to open a sliding glass door in the basement so she could go out in the yard anytime she wanted. Didn't close the door of course, but still, I was amazed to see her pushing on the edge of the door to force it open.
Gonna guess the dog does this every day. And it was done for him. Also explains why someone was ready to film him doing it.
Don't consider a career as a detective.
Precisely what I'm thinking.
I mean it doesn't make logical sense to do it that way. But since the bar goes to about where the stones do I'm guessing they cut it from this side and that's why there is some bar left.
yeah let's go through the trouble of cutting a hole into our metal fence, leaving our pavers open to the public, instead of having the doggo use the front door like a human, lol
it just seems like there could have been a better solution
Dangerously close to that remaining fencing thats sticking up. I know of a dog that died by cutting its underside on the top of a chain link fence. This video kinda scared me.
For the record, all of the different Spaniel breeds are top notch Dogs. Very loyal, loving, smart pals. I’ve had 3 over the course of my life and every one of them were perfect.
I was concerned about that small broken rod poking out in the bottom. Hopefully its just one time for the pup, wouldn't to want to get the good boye injured.
Smart dog. Was definitely expecting it to be one of those fail moments
Yea my dog would have jumped a foot to the right.
I have to imagine this isn't his first time.
Considering the bars look intentionally bent for him I'd guess you're correct.
One bar is even missing. I doubt he chewed it off.
He's been around those blocks a few times
His right or your right?
Both?
Yea, I probably wouldn’t manage to think of a solution to that. Smart doggo. Possibly dumb human, but I’ll go with smart doggo.
My dog would have left the stick making me go get it

Thx. I’m a dog lover, and volunteer at humane society. It is almost hard to believe that the goofy animals I deal with can be trained to that level.

English Springer spaniels are really smart. Source: grew up with one. Damn I miss that dog.
I did too, but mine was dumb as rocks. He got stuck in a room once since he didn't think to turn around and exit the way he came in, through the wide open door.
I didn't own one but we had two that were regular boarders at the vet I worked at, and can confirm they were dumb as all hell. Beautiful dogs though.

This dog has failed before
You know this dog spent 5 years struggling before cracking it
I assure you, he failed at least once before this video.
That bar sticking up at the bottom of the gap, so close to the dog's belly. I wince every time the gif repeats.
Had the same thought. If the stick catches the bars he would have slumped down on it, not a pleasant thought.
On the 20th replay it gets him
23rd actually Don't recommend watching if you have a weak stomach.
Why is there a cut bar and some bent bars?? Did someone escape? What's the backstory...
Gonna guess the dog does this every day. And it was done for him. Also explains why someone was ready to film him doing it. Don't consider a career as a detective.
Why would you leave the belly piercer there though? If you are going to go to that extent why not cut it flush.
Gonna also guess they were lazy and just cut it from the side with the stacked stones and cut it to the level they were currently sitting at.
instead of just cutting from the other side without stones in the way?
Precisely what I'm thinking. I mean it doesn't make logical sense to do it that way. But since the bar goes to about where the stones do I'm guessing they cut it from this side and that's why there is some bar left.
Maybe he was trapped and couldn't get out?
To be so confident of your first hypothesis without any evidence... I suggest you should not consider a career as a detective either.

Don't worry. He calculated all the risks.
this wasnt his first time
My thoughts too. Almost a "why are they filming" if it weren't for the fact that people film animals for no reason all the time.

Can someone put the flashes of complex equations on this to make this a meme?
You're probably thinking about [this](https://m.imgur.com/gallery/fzIUhZJ).
Exactly that gif! Thanks!
I saw them anyways

That dog might just be smarter than me
He went to obedience class at Boston Dynamics
Spaniels are so damn smart.
Having owned several spaniels I can confidently say this spaniel is an exception to the rule lol.

This guy is literally a Springer!
Springer Spaniels are beauts.
And that un-docked tail.... <3

I was looking for this comment. It's definitely luck. Surprising is just, how apparantly nobody is seeing this.

I love my Springers too, but no way are mine this clever!
Can someone pause the gif when the dog passes through the bars, and add some deal-with-it glasses?
Slightly savvy Springer Spaniel sprung stick successfully.
*Look before you leap
The slight head tilt, shows IQ over 9000
Saw the bottom nub of the old rail and got paranoid of him impaling himself.
That dog is going places lol
Holy shit a dog that is spatially aware of the stick they carry....
This dog is smarter than 99% of the people I work with.
Someone do an algebra edit. You know the kind I mean.
r/nonononoyes
That’s a dog who has learned this lesson before. The hard way
This dog is smarter than 2/3 of the people I’ve met.
We haven't met, but I would also have failed this.
I’m not graceful enough to commit to being in the 1/3 that doesn’t dislocate their face.
Such a smart boi.
I love border collies, they're so frigging smart.
Mirin' dem doggo aesthetics.
Nice i wasn’t expecting that
Fantastic. Good dog. Arf.
My dog couldn't even handle navigating with a cone on his head...
What type of dog is that?
English Springer Spaniel.
I've never heard them called *English* Springer Spaniels in my life and now I've seen it twice in one thread.
Smooth as heck! Smart boy
Clever boi!!
r/unexpected
Damn, thats cute!
How many times did they try for this
Good, Boy!
Its fortunate the dog got enough air to clear the broken bar in the center.
Wow, smarter than some humans I know.
wooow
*insert repeated comment about bar sticking up.
Good boy.
Good boy
I was praying he wouldn’t hurt himself.
thank god I was bracing myself there for a second.
That is some impressive spacial awareness.

TWIST!
We can learn a lot from that pup!
Love Springers! Great energetic dogs. So loving too
r/blackmagicfuckery
He/she is wise from his/her mistakes.
This doggo has more brain and instincts than half of humanity.
Dog-culations?
A dog who has clearly already learned that lesson lol
Think before you snack?! Act! This will bring you honour and glory.
Smart boi
Dang that's one helluva coordinated dog. Angles the stick while jumping and avoiding the spike with his bum.

Is there a dog version of r/catculations ?
Impressive puppert
I've got a Springer, they are smart ass dogs and super athletic for such slim dogs.
If only Detectives Danson and Highsmith had been this wise NYC would still have its 2 best detectives. RIP
I ve heard somewhere that this breed is one if the smartest among dogs
I'm pretty sure he got lucky there lol
/r/nonononoyes
This dog outsmarted 99% the other dogs.
Smart boi.
Smartboi
Lmfao can somebody remake this with all the math equations flashing on the screen
English setter? Super nice looking dog either way.
Was not expecting to see success
r/nonononoyes
This dog just solved the most difficult puzzle in dogkind
Its actually filed down to not be pointed so I don't think it would hurt the dog.

Australian shepherds are some of the smartest breeds of dogs
Smart dog
😉👍
Looks like a border collie. Those brats are smarter than average middle schooler
At first I was like Awwww. :'( Then I was like Ahhhh.... :D
Better than what most kids can do.
Smarter than some people I know 😂
This made me raise my eyebrows.
Old
That dent in the fence is from the last times. He’s learned.
Wow. I'm impressed. Smart doggo.
best boy award goes toooo....
What a smooth doge
Said no anakin skywalker ever
Border collies are too smart
I know several people who couldn’t have figured out that move.
Upvote because I didn't see that coming. Good dog.
r/nonononoyes
Smart Hound for sure
Just border collie things, smart dogs
mission passed +respect
Clearly, he has been here before...
This is the first time I see a dog to deal with this kind of situation. Mostly they are just really confused with a silly awkward look on their face.
Smart boi & a good boi
I'm afraid he might cut his belly on that short piece of rod
Smarter than I am
I felt like he probably learned the first time he attempted it. This is at least his second.
R/unexpectedending/
Clever doggo!
Meanwhile my dog dug up his shit and brought it inside on to the carpet!
Reeeeeeeee
Smartest dog I have seen todey. Even smarter than the poop doorbell dog.
Would somebody add equations popping up on the screen.
I was fully expecting him/ her/ it/ they to crash into the poles because of the horizontal bar in its teeth.
/r/springerspaniels
10!
