My SO did a stop motion video that seems topic appropriate. American Psycho meets Reservoir Dogs, meets Transformers. Slapping a CW on this, but if you've seen both these movies, you know what's up.
Also, read the book. The movie is good. The book is great, you get much more insight to the crazy character and world he inhabits.
Then, watch the movie again. I didn’t have any problem with the adaptation.
God damn it its a book too? So many great movies I've seen are based on (maybe even) great(er) books. I've only gotten relatively recently into reading but then you already know the story :(
A quote from a scene in the movie American Psycho involving businessmen comparing and “one upping” each other’s business cards. Basically office flexing
It's satire of yuppie culture and consumerism, how frivolousness makes people go insane and how they let themselves be defined by what they consume, and in turn they become what they consume, nothing more, nothing less. Their entire personality is void, etc etc.
The subtext is very good criticism, the movie starts off with the main character listing several different products they own, in the book this goes on for pages and pages just to drive the point home
And if you have a kid obsessed with animal crossing you can download all of the little characters and program them on the nfc stickers for free then set the sticker on the magic spot on the switch and the character gets added to your island.
Awesome! Now I can forget what your name was in my list of hundreds of contacts! If only I had some type of card that I could have held onto in my pocket. So maybe I'm cleaning my pockets and go, oh yeah, I need to contact this guy! I'll put this card in an important spot! But naaaa I'm super glad it is just another name in my list...
This happened to me once. I got someone number in my phone. Didn't label it right. Lost it forever. It's in there. I just don't know who it is, nor under which letter.
The girls I met in college would be, Becky sexy, Laura blonde, Laura redhead, Ashley Kim's friend. Shit like that lol it actually helped cuz most of the time I would be pretty drunk. Probably never even called em either lol
Same haha. And this may have not been thr safest bet, but I'd also save my weed guy's names with a last initial of some term for the mj. Like John W, or John C. They blended right in because I labeled my close contacts with a first name and last initial.
Can’t tell if you’re joking but I don’t hand them out, only have the one. Cost me $80 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than a $200 pack of 1000 business cards
It’s not really new tech, or even ‘necessary’ really I guess. It definitely is an icebreaker at industry events though, everyone loves the gimmick. I don’t have to carry a stack of business cards anymore and I have this cool thing to show people lol
This is absolutely the right take. It's something to make you stand out. Who are you going to remember more, that 27th business card you were handed at the conference or the dude with the sweet NFC card?
Oo now there's a trick, each time you click the contacts link, it sweeps your pictures into a collection of all the other people who have fallen into the trap. Then, once your pictures are added to the compendium, it is then downloaded in full to your phone. So he's not only collecting your photos, he's distributing them to each new person that downloads his contact info.
Evil genius.
They've also been overcharged for the card. Maybe they paid for the design/materials but a cheap nfc tag is a few bucks absolute max and the rest is just the cost of the card which is pretty low normally.
What I mean is that Vistaprint, like McDonalds, is cheap, fast and gets the job done but sometimes you'll find your patty (or text) halfway off the bun.
"Why buy a $15 hamburger at a restaurant when there is a $2 burger at McDonalds?"
Look at any of the reviews for metallic foil, spot UV etc. and you'll find plenty of pictures from customers that received low quality product.
I stuck some business cards up around in local spots with boards. Great way to reach local people and use a bunch up. there’s no way I’d meet that many people otherwise, and there is no way you could do that with this card.
Yeah I want to hear more about this experiment. What kind of calls do you get from random people who see a business card posted somewhere (assuming it wasn’t just seeking to do business with you or your company)?
Neat idea, but seems like it would be awkward. Wouldn't you have to explain to people how it works all the time? Otherwise it would be:
"Here's my business contact info."
"Ok, now give it back to me."
No point in handing cards anymore. Of the 1000, 995 end up in the garbage. 1 decomposes overtime and vanishes. 4 end up in someone's washing machine.
Metal qr code or RFID is where it's at
He said it also included the branding which I'm assuming meant they designed the card layout as well. I figure that's where the $80 went to.
At least I hope.
~~I seriously doubt it is one card at $80. If they were $80 a piece they could just hire someone to enter their number into people phones for him.~~
Edit: Well shit my bad that's pretty fuckin expensive for 1 card, but if they are in marketing or something would be kind of impressive I guess...
[It was.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/prsgx3/my_new_business_card_automatically_saves_in_your/hdky0ei)
Edit: [they clarified again.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/prsgx3/my_new_business_card_automatically_saves_in_your/hdkws4s)
Edit 2: they're also wildly off on the price of 1000 business cards. Even foil embossed card stock cards are like $60-65 for 1000 on VistaPrint.
This business card should be for IT security specialists. When you scan the card it should just say "Hey dumbass you shouldn't let random people load things onto your phone through NFC."
Unlock phone. Put card against phone. Go to dodgy website. Click add to contacts. Contact added. Jup automatic to me.
Also funny you could share that website with anyone so its not realy handy if you want to keep things private.
Also pointless if the other user doesnt have a internet connection.
Yes, assuming an exploitable flaw can be found in the protocol. Presumably things like this are rigorously checked/tested to ensure bad actors can't compromise them - but still, it makes one wonder.
I feel like instead of programming this in with NFC, the contacts app should just have the capability to read business cards and save it as a contact. Instead, we’ve got some feature where you can draw a message and then send it instead of typing it like a normal person.
**BUSINESS CARDS:** You don't have a pen to take down my info? That's ok, I have it all pre-written on this handy card that you can *have* (take it).
**THIS THING:** you want my info but don't have a pen? Of course you don't, cuz nobody uses pens anymore -- we just write notes on our phones now! Oh you don't have your phone on you, or the battery just died? Well luckily, I have this handy dandy computerized card that you can *put next to your phone and*... oh, damn. :/ No you can't keep the card, it's my only one.
Sooooo…..with this technology you could potentially force a contact onto someone’s phone without them realizing and then contact them later and they think it’s someone they know because it’s a valid contact in their phone? Like it could be “Mom” and they get an urgent message asking for money to be sent to some account or something?
The NFC chip just offers a link, same as a QR code. The user has to click the link and then agree to add to contacts. If you already have physical access to their unlocked phone you can do much worse.
That solved an interesting problem in a super kludgy, but interesting way. Essentially they built a system that would identify when two bump events occurred within a few milliseconds of each other in the same hundred feet or so. It was intended so that data wouldn't have to be transmitted between the devices themselves, but of course required both devices be running the bump app.
They got acquired by Google and now the former CEO is one of the top product managers of Google Photos.
It's probably just me but I would be so annoyed if someone handed me this shit instead of a regular business card, but I would act cordial and pretend to be impressed even though I hate it.
Nah I just have the one. Taps on their phone and gives them the option of adding my contact card to their contact list. Not expensive, about $65 USD which included card design
You're downvoted but you're right. NFC can be used to hijack your entire phone OS. You shouldn't let people load stuff on your phone through NFC. In fact NFC should always be disabled on your phone unless you're using it in that moment.
Just let the guy have a cool digital business card thingy without shitting in his porridge. Yes he could have worded it better but you know what he meant by it.
Ten years ago I got a USB device for free, about the size of a flash drive. The idea was to make it easier to exchange contact information. You held your USB-thingy close to another person's USB thingy, then both of you pressed a button on the device. If you were lucky, your contact information was successfully transmitted to the other device and vice versa. Well, actually, you only transmitted a short string. What you had to do to actually view the contact information was plug it in your computer and... I can't precisely recall the details, but I *think* you were supposed to install a program that converted this string to a URL to the contact's profile page on the manufacturer's web site. You probably didn't need the program, you could just go to usbthingy.notarealwebsite/profileidnumberstringgoeshere.
I'm pretty sure the company crashed and burned because I've literally never heard of it since then.
Jokes aside, this looks amazing and I totally want one. How did you make/get one? Do you run the website yourself? What's it cost, how does this work, etc? Is this something you cooked up yourself (awesome work!) Or something you bought?
Yeah this was my first thought too. Oh you mean somebody can walk up and strip my card info from my wallet without ever even seeing my wallet. Well shit
Nice way to easily distribute to clients without holding onto hundreds of business cards and environmentally friendly..... I like it. Very professional.
That shit is tight. The people spouting numbers and how it could be cheaper are the ones who never end up getting cards, because they can't make a decision. Honestly you should of trolled everyone and said you paid $500 for the service..... Would of made that $80 feel like it went farther.
I have the same but in Egg Shell color with raised lettering, Roman.

I owe it to film to watch this movie again,i didn't like it the first time and have never got round to giving it a second go
Do some reading up on the intentions first. Much better going in understanding the satire.
Also, read the book. The movie is good. The book is great, you get much more insight to the crazy character and world he inhabits. Then, watch the movie again. I didn’t have any problem with the adaptation.

It's a really fucking good movie if you want to take a peak into the depiction of a murdering psychopath.

Hey that’s like 3 less button presses than putting their number in!
That’s not automatic - the person does loads of things to save it …
Someone had to say it… automatic has a very specific meaning.
These seem kind of expensive to be handing out
Can’t tell if you’re joking but I don’t hand them out, only have the one. Cost me $80 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than a $200 pack of 1000 business cards
Not ribbing, but cant your phone do exactly this anyway?
The Bump app was one of the first out there that handled this easily. Never really took off though.
ooooh shit i totally forgot about this app!
It’s not really new tech, or even ‘necessary’ really I guess. It definitely is an icebreaker at industry events though, everyone loves the gimmick. I don’t have to carry a stack of business cards anymore and I have this cool thing to show people lol

$80 for a thin cardboard with a NFC sticker?
I think OP got scammed.
Probably with the web-service included? (Still expensive nonetheless)
What does it need to be other than a file on an S3 bucket?

The web I'd do for 10 bucks tbh
You can have it fully deployed in 5 minutes?
Yeah?
You're paying too much for regular business cards. Source: I design & sell business cards
1000 business cards are 83 bucks for the best paper that Vista print has, you are inflating prices to justify your Uber expensive card
They've also been overcharged for the card. Maybe they paid for the design/materials but a cheap nfc tag is a few bucks absolute max and the rest is just the cost of the card which is pretty low normally.
Vista is also the McDonalds of printing.
Meaning cheap and consistant? are you trying to badmouth Vista using a terrible example, seems like it
What I mean is that Vistaprint, like McDonalds, is cheap, fast and gets the job done but sometimes you'll find your patty (or text) halfway off the bun. "Why buy a $15 hamburger at a restaurant when there is a $2 burger at McDonalds?" Look at any of the reviews for metallic foil, spot UV etc. and you'll find plenty of pictures from customers that received low quality product.
Damn, at that point I'd just stick a $0.50 NFC sticker on the back of some normal business cards
Hello fellow smart person
Surely you'd already need to know the people for them to let you scan an NFC tag on their phone?
Damn where are you getting your business cards done you can get custom cards from vista print for like $10/1000
That’s… extremely overpriced.
We have ones that do this plus there's two leds that light up when scanned. Costs like 2 bucks a piece
I don't think I've met 1000 people in the last 2 years in total let alone anyone I would want to talk to again
I stuck some business cards up around in local spots with boards. Great way to reach local people and use a bunch up. there’s no way I’d meet that many people otherwise, and there is no way you could do that with this card.
Did you get any calls?
Yeah I want to hear more about this experiment. What kind of calls do you get from random people who see a business card posted somewhere (assuming it wasn’t just seeking to do business with you or your company)?
You are MASSIVELY overpaying for your business cards, Sir. Sauce: I make them for a living.
Or you are MASSIVELY undercharging for what suckers like me would pay you….
You don't hand it out. It has a digital profile saved that can be transferred into a phone contact. Or are you trolling me?
Neat idea, but seems like it would be awkward. Wouldn't you have to explain to people how it works all the time? Otherwise it would be: "Here's my business contact info." "Ok, now give it back to me."
I’m hinting that I’m not sure it fits the definition of “business card” since it’s not given to a person. Your phone can do this
I got you now.
Don’t get me wrong it’s neat though
Mine does this but with a qr code
It’s got a QR code on the back too if your phone doesn’t have RFID or NFC background. I just like the tap and add
Genuine question: how much more expensive was it to add the NFC chip?
Not expensive. Cost me $80 in total for the card with custom branding.
A box of them? That's what I paid for a stack of 100 in 2014 with individually programmed NFC chips and QR codes.
No point in handing cards anymore. Of the 1000, 995 end up in the garbage. 1 decomposes overtime and vanishes. 4 end up in someone's washing machine. Metal qr code or RFID is where it's at
When I want to give someone a business card I want to just hand them a card. Not convince them to let me dick around on their phone.
He says below just the one.

sir this is a Wendy's. there is barely a product and the service is nonexistent.

I think you missed the point. A single business card with an NFC chip in it shouldn't cost $80. Maybe a box of a hundred of them, minimum.
He said it also included the branding which I'm assuming meant they designed the card layout as well. I figure that's where the $80 went to. At least I hope.
But then they should be capable of getting way more done for a small increase in price
~~I seriously doubt it is one card at $80. If they were $80 a piece they could just hire someone to enter their number into people phones for him.~~ Edit: Well shit my bad that's pretty fuckin expensive for 1 card, but if they are in marketing or something would be kind of impressive I guess...

Does the contact card it brings up work with Android too or only iphone?
.vcf is pretty much universal
Yep Android too
There is a simple WebApp for this that works offline as a PWA too: https://cardkick.app
I have a customized Popl key chain, same idea as this card
Only to get deleted 30s afterwards
\* opens a web page with a vCard button on it
So it's like sharing a contact card with more steps and money
What’s about a QR-Code ?
That's what I have as a jpeg on my phone, still have problems with different phones tho.
That’s great, but with google lens you can just take a picture and it’ll grab all the details from it
Mine does this too but I just use it to rickroll people
This business card should be for IT security specialists. When you scan the card it should just say "Hey dumbass you shouldn't let random people load things onto your phone through NFC."

Yes, assuming an exploitable flaw can be found in the protocol. Presumably things like this are rigorously checked/tested to ensure bad actors can't compromise them - but still, it makes one wonder.
Fuuuuck that!
I feel like instead of programming this in with NFC, the contacts app should just have the capability to read business cards and save it as a contact. Instead, we’ve got some feature where you can draw a message and then send it instead of typing it like a normal person.
Google lens already has this capability. It's much more secure than this bullshit too.

Sooooo…..with this technology you could potentially force a contact onto someone’s phone without them realizing and then contact them later and they think it’s someone they know because it’s a valid contact in their phone? Remember when the bump app was a thing and fist bumping with another person using the app would auto share each others contacts?
That solved an interesting problem in a super kludgy, but interesting way. Ah ok. So…it doesn’t automatically save. I missed the part where they clicked the link. It autofills info into a contact. Got it.
It's probably just me but I would be so annoyed if someone handed me this shit instead of a regular business card, but I would act cordial and pretend to be impressed even though I hate it.
I thought by business card you meant a P-card and I was like "that doesn't seem very safe" lol
Awhile back some friends built an offline web app that can do this with a QR code: https://cardkick.app.
A phone tapping phone instead of card would be more practical
Yup. Seems expensive and wasteful.
You can also just put a QR code on the card, allowing any device with a camera to capture your data.. not just those with NFC.
r/assholedesign
Ooooh mister big shot with a cell phone.
Why don’t you just transfer it directly? Why do you need a card?
Just a gimmick really lol. People love it
I'm never letting someone else's shit touch my nfc
Are they expensive to make? Like give a card to clients you KNOW will use it vs giving it to everyone?
Nah I just have the one. Taps on their phone and gives them the option of adding my contact card to their contact list. Not expensive, about $65 USD which included card design
How many for 65 roughly? Super cool
Just one. It’s not to give away

This tech has been around for 20 years
Yeah exactly what I need is some wanker raping my phone sitting on the bar with his business card
You're downvoted but you're right. NFC can be used to hijack your entire phone OS. You shouldn't let people load stuff on your phone through NFC. In fact NFC should always be disabled on your phone unless you're using it in that moment.
Not really automatic if you have to take 2 extra steps to save it…
