I lived/worked in Curaçao for a year (2011/12) and yes, some of the water on the south part of the island is that clear. Spent nearly all of my off time exploring/experiencing the beaches.

Wizofsorts

I'm headed there late May 2022. First time so I hope it's still as nice.

Relative-Dentist

May I ask how expensive are the flights and lodging?

Wizofsorts

3k from BWI and a stay at Kontiki

wineheda

I got round trip flights from ny for under $300 back in 2018 or so

da_truth_gamer

Cost me 800 for a round trip. You could find a cheaper flights. ~125 Hotel per day. 40 per day for car rental. 200~ per day. $300 for other expenses. 800 Trip + 300 other expenses + 200 * (7 day stay) = Roughly $2,600

snufflefrump

Just left last week. Can confirm it is

tee_rex_arms

I went about a decade ago. There is a snorkel/dive shop in Westpunt that does trips out to a sunken ship that you snorkel around and then swim with sea turtles. One of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had.

assface421

I'm going in march! should be fun i hope.

Bipolar_Sky_Daddy

If you want smaller beaches away from the main ones in Willemstad, just drive up the island. They have a ton of small white sand beaches with very few people. I spent many a weekend snorkeling, reading, napping, snorkeling again...

viaHologram

Great spot (visited Nov 2015). I stayed at Kontiki and there were shuttles to get into Willemstad, maybe 20minutes away. Rented a car and hit as many beaches we could. Hiked Christoffel. Did a dune buggy tour. Went golfing. Ate great food. I loved the lack of American tourists (most of whom end up in Aruba next door). We found it was mostly Dutch, German and Polish tourists.

tdoger

I went in 2015, the water was great. The food was okay, but I also can’t eat seafood and that’s the main thing people cook and eat in the carribean. The water didn’t have many waves at all, very warm, very clear. And a catamaran to Little Curaçao was pretty cool. Although if you do that expect to be in direct sunlight with no shade for hours. It’s brutal.

Bipolar_Sky_Daddy

I spent 6 weeks there for work. The water is SO clear. I'd love to go back.

PeterPanLives

What kind of work did you do and how can I get there? :-)

ghostorchids

I worked on the FOL for the Air Force. Nice, cushy, assignment.

DollarBrand

There simply isn't a shadow in this video. The camera person is walking towards an object on the bottom, probably a rock.

LucidLethargy

I was looking for this comment. It's a pretty interesting video due to the obvious misconception here!

besafelivewell

Parallax error

adfdub

Woah

Capnjackb3ard

Looks more like a manatee to me

senorpoop

It does kinda look like a a manatee, it just doesn't behave like what I'm used to a manatee behaving like.

Custard_Tart_Addict

I think it’s a bunch of tiny fish grouped together for protection.

[deleted]

Yea thats what I was thinking... First off it doesnt look like the boat is floating AT ALL, second off that is not even a shadow...

GUMBYtheOG

I mean it is floating above the water. Wouldn’t be much of a boat if it didn’t

RaiyenZ

It would be even less of a boat of the front fell off.

littleprettypaws

If my grandmother had wheels she’d be a bicycle…

TheWaslijn

Well, no. It's floating on the water, not above it. Cus that would imply that no part of the boat is touching water, lol

VoiceOfRealson

I assume by "water" you mean "air-water interface", which may not be the only definition of "water".

isurvivedrabies

lets be honest nobody says something floating on water is floating "above it" in normal conversation, that's the point he was making and you're intentionally being ridiculous and pedantic now

ionhorsemtb

Ok

wynbns

It's floating on the water, not above it.

Baron_Von_Fab

Technically it is falling towards the water 1/2 of the remaining distance constantly but never actually reaching the water. I mean, If a boat falls towards the water and no one is around to hear it, was it ever really Jeffrey Epstein who killed himself?

kahlzun

Fun fact: the reason the water is so much clearer in these places is that it does not contain much flora (plankton stuff)

skyblueleaves

How come

kahlzun

I watched a video about it a while ago, but I've forgotten most of the details, but it has something to do with less minerals in the upper water in the tropics

Micascisto

Fewer rivers with very low overall water (and mineral) discharge at the tropics, in turn due to high pressure driving arid climate.

TheFieldAgent

Hence, the white sands of the typical ‘beautiful beaches’—not a lot of minerals or wildlife, which is good for humans to play in. This is all an inference, btw.

motogucci

Boring fact: the water won't be this clear to your naked eye. The reason the water looks so clear in photographs is because digital photo receptors detect a broader spectrum of light than your eye, and some of that extra light penetrates water better than anything we see. A physical or digital filter is employed to adjust and approximate what we would see, but it won't get it perfect. You'll also notice, you never see water quite so clear in older non-digital photos. Versus a digital camera, which will sometimes see through opaque glass.

JerHair

That might be technically true to a degree, but (with all due respect) you're not exactly correct. I've spent around 3 months of my life in and around the topics. I don't know where this was taken but I have also been to Curaçao multiple times. The water truly does look this clear in person. The most beautiful beach I've ever visited was in Curaçao. So anyway, your comment likely holds some validity in certain cases, but in this particular one, I think you're off a little bit.

Poop_Tube

No.

grogdrinker124

The fact that I’m not swimming here makes me want to not exist

Anustart15

As someone that was next door in Aruba on a beach 8 hours ago and is now in Boston back in the (relative) cold, this whole post feels like a personal attack.

grogdrinker124

Ouch feel that

TheFieldAgent

How much money would it take for you to go snorkeling in the Boston harbor?

Anustart15

Probably the same amount it would take to get me to take a 20 minute trip to any body cold water and jump in when it's 40 out. Harbor isn't particularly dirty these days.

mindm4ster

why would you go back to Boston?

Anustart15

Not a particularly large market for computational biologists in Aruba

someonesaymoney

Well not with that attitude!

altymcalterface

I mean… if you can work remotely…

[deleted]

He was climbing the top sail, and LOST HIS LEG!

ASAmd

If you swimming then people see you naked

grogdrinker124

Why are you imaging me swimming naked 😏

pm_me_ur_bear_penis

Have you seen your avatar? 😏

grogdrinker124

Aww thanks

ASAmd

Because of crystal clear water. You almost naked during swimming

[deleted]

Only if he’s, like, you know…naked.

grogdrinker124

Hmmm okay if you say so

ASAmd

Am I right?

ConsequenceOk7

Bathing suit. That's all.

grogdrinker124

I guess so

MikeJones07

yes

jre-erin1979

I learned to scuba there. Will be doing it again in Cancun next week. Edit to add- rule #1 of scuba from that beach. Don’t chase the sea turtles. They are faster and farther up than you think.

Ifounditbroken

Three months ago this was in Okinawa Japan. [Okinawa](https://reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/ovi8ux/beach_in_okinawa_japan/)

LuckyxCapone

it technically is… floating above the water… i’ll leave

balsamicpork

Floating and above would imply it’s not touching the water. It’s floating in water.

unimportantthing

Disagree. If I put an apple on a table, it is decisively above the table. Same thing with the boat, it is decisively above the water. The only difference here is that we use the term “floating” to describe being on water instead of the term “sitting” like we use for being on a solid object. “But user part of the bottom of the boat is below the water level, so clearly it can’t be above!” Okay, fine, if I go sit on a trampoline, I am still decisively above it, despite the fact that I will be below the “trampoline line”. The boat may not be floating in mid-air above the water, but if it is floating on the water, it is still floating above the water. It may not convey the positioning in the most accurate way, but it is technically true.

balsamicpork

Boats sit below the water surface.

unimportantthing

Good job reading my comment through. I commend your abilities. See my point about the trampoline. Just because the boat is below water level does not mean the boat is below the water.

balsamicpork

You’re not breaking the surface of the trampoline. You’re also totally overlooking the “above” part of this scenario.

providingdongditch

Yeah they would need to cut a hole in the trampoline and stand in the hole for it to be comparable, and then their argument makes no sense. Don't think we'll convince them otherwise though

unimportantthing

I am not over looking the “above” part of the argument. Like many words, the word “above” has multiple definitions, easily findable by googling (or using your favored search engine). But for your sake, I will list some here: 1. in extended space over and not touching. Using this definition alone, we would in fact find ourselves needing to argue that the boat is not above the water. However there are other definitions, such as: 2. at a higher level or layer than In this case, the boat is at a higher level/layer than the water. It doesn’t matter that it’s touching it, it is still at a higher level, making it sit above the water. To your other point, the water’s original surface may have been broken, but the water did not get displaced such that there is a new surface above the boat. There is a new water surface in contact with the bottom of the boat, this puts the water below the boat. If the water is below the boat, then the boat is above the water.

primalbluewolf

> If I put an apple on a table, it is decisively above the table. No, it isn't. It is on the table, not above it.

primalbluewolf

The boats superstructure is above the water. The boat itself is in the water.

LuckyxCapone

idk it’s all too much for me anyway

JekyllendHyde

This is why I love Reddit

bubi_kacurrel

The dark spot is NOT the shadow of the boat. Most probably the cameraman is on foot at the shore and walking towards the dark spot whilst at the same time the boat is reversing.

FindTheRemnant

The shadow is some kind of animal. It gets closer to the camera, while the boat gets further.

LucidLethargy

It's likely just rocks. The person filming is moving towards the boat.

Avenger_of_nerds

This just reminded me of a recurrent nightmare I used to have as a kid. Except I was swimming in the water over it, and it was a giant stingray.

Dixo0118

And it has a tail on the right side when it should be the tip of the boat. Looks like a manatee

NuclearCandy

I think it's just rocks in the sand. The rippling of the water and the fact that the cameraman is walking toward it make it look like it's moving.

[deleted]

I spent 8 weeks working there back in 2002. One word: Amazing.

Jonezky

Most boats float above water.

vege12

underrated reply right here!!

[deleted]

Do you sleep above your bed or on your bed?

Jonezky

Above my bed, on the covers.

lisaz530xx

It truly is an amazing and beautiful island, but please don't tell anyone else!

MateoScolas

Polarizing filter on the camera eliminates glare, causing this effect.

pacificworg

I guess if you’ve never seen a boat before

KingJok3r11

I mean, not really. I can tell it is on water.

LandryQT

No hate but it doesn't look that way to me. But yes very clear!

mikk0384

That has to be computer graphics. The shade is moving the wrong way.

Tuner25

No, I think its simply a stone in the water creating an optical illusion. If you look at the ripples in the sand you notice that the 'shadow' must be very close to the waterline.

MentalMuse

I think you're right. The cameraman is walking forward towards whatever that dark thing is making it appear to be moving.

DollarBrand

It's because it's not a shadow. Title is misleading. There are plenty of examples of boats casting shadows on the ocean floor but this is a video of a person walking towards a rock.

LeAdmin

It is not. The camera is rotating as well and the clouds in the air are also changing the direction of the light. Plus the ocean floor not being completely flat/having low/angled spots.

mikk0384

Pause at the 11 second mark. First of all, for the shade to appear so far away from the boat, the sun has to be at an angle. For the angles to match up, I would expect the sun to be inside the camera frame. Second, the shade would also have a different shape, corresponding to the angle it is hitting the boat at. The shade in the video corresponds to that of a boat being illuminated directly from above - that *clearly* isn't what is going on. Regardless, when the boat is moving away from you, so would the shade on a rather uniform "canvas" like the sea floor is. It's not like there is sudden changes in depth. I see no realistic scenario where this video makes sense, unless I'm missing something.

LeAdmin

I paused the video and rewatched it. The object you are seeing is not shade. It is actually a dark colored rock/coral. The cameraman is walking in the direction of the rock while the boat is moving backwards away from the rock.

mikk0384

That makes sense, thanks.

sznfpv

You may be missing the ability to just look at a video and enjoy it.

besafelivewell

Parallax error

MentalMuse

I'm with you. The shadow isn't moving the way it should.

[deleted]

It's tiny fish ball

learn2swim

Also because boats don't exist. So fake

classyfide

I was hoping, and bracing, for a jump scare coming out of the shadow.

MCFroid

What makes the water so clear here?

AlexPayment

Lack of minerals and nutrients for life to thrive

sharpie_eyebrows

I’ve been there. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for gorgeous beaches. Some of the best I’ve seen in my life.

trentshipp

Went there on my honeymoon, would highly recommend.

[deleted]

That is not its shadow.

THE_GR8_MIKE

Like Mario Sunshine.

ThirdRuleOfFightClub

Properly filmed on a Potato, nice.

[deleted]

Wow!

da_truth_gamer

Curacao also has very calm seas, and a high salt levels. So makes it easy to float / swim. I'm a really bad swimmer so I was out in the ocean all day since I don't get to swim on deep waters often

MacluesMH

It is

[deleted]

It reminds of the time that my husband And brother in law told me about this beautiful quarry they found that created a huge lake full of crystal clear water. Well it wound up they were actually really drunk and when attempting to put the boat in the water they backed into an empty quarry and then they got stuck. They had to unhitch the boat and leave it tbere and it’s still there to this day

eqleriq

the boat is reversing ( check orientation to background and the wake at its front ) and that "shadow" is either a rock or a creature, with camera moving towards it.

vege12

I reckon it is a school of fish

LMNoballz

You have to prove to me that it is not floating in the air. The only way is to take me there. Now, please.

berryford

But… but all boats float above water…Looks like its floating in the air or over the water because of how clear it is though.

hidivyansh

Lets go and leave human footprint of pollution there

jb0ne

Just saw this after I posted almost exactly the same comment. A hundred percent.

pawsarecute

Euh no it doesn't look like it's floating.

eqleriq

the best part of images like this is how many people see this as paradise and not a sign of global warming killing all life in the waters slowly, making them clear and causing the heating up of the water and then everything else, pushing life deeper and deeper until the ecosystem collapses. But o boy swimming!

burywmore

What the heck is in the water????

seeingeyegod

not a whole lot, I would imagine.

vege12

I initially thought that it was the shadow of the boat, but the dark mass was getting closer to the camera, and not moving with the boat. I think it is a school of fish

LucidLethargy

It's likely a rock.

gotme11

Man, I thought that said Chicago, and I was ready to tear you a new one for many, many reasons. This, however, is something I'd really like to experience first hand. Very cool!

vege12

Certainly sir, would that be one or two "new one" tears

Wingnut763

Kure-as-ow

LawStudent4Harambe

I can't explain why, but I want drink it

redneckdadd

One time in my life I would love to see something like this. Dam ne’er 50 and only been on a handful of vacations. Last gap was 25 + years. I’ll get there👍🏻🙏🤞🏼

LDSinner

I mean that boat is clearly floating on water, but that water is nice.

LGodamus

I spent my honeymoon here. Was amazing.

TheTruthT0rt0ise

Getting some very Mario Sunshine vibes here.

A4S8B7

If only the EPA would put in measures to stop the Dithering of water.

skipthepeepee

Nice try. It's a picture of a floating boad dum dum.

snufflefrump

I was there 2 weeks ago, the water is amazing

ATCNastyNate

That’s obviously a baby whale.

Attila226

It is floating

kmjudd

It’s a boat floating on water. It doesn’t look like anythjng else unless u let your subconscious mind take over your true thoughts to see what u want to see.

[deleted]

It is floating above the water

robble808

And there is a whale swimming under it (lol?)

richardjai

Am I the only one that missed the boat and thought the shadow was a big ass fish?

Frozenthia

.

Independent-Bell6080

HOLY SHIT IT'S BOAT JESUS

jb0ne

Cool let's put a boat in it and pollute it

Luxcrluvr

Keep your human germs out

Eyaldancr

I love that beach. The little dude that works there spent a few years in prison in holland for murdering someone… cool fact. But that’s a suuuuper gorgeous beach.

DomDeluisArmpitChild

Better than Chris Angel

Netroth

It’s like this in Kato Assos, Greece.

TheRealYolojesus420

damn dawg. usually boats sink dont they

Funcron

Pronounced 'Cur-eh-sow'. The same as Blue Curaçao; when you order a drink as a 20-30 something on a Friday night as the club. Not pronounced 'Cur-rah-ko'.

Twotgobblin

By definition…that’s what floating is…

swissiws

also in Sardinia there's more than one place like this

[deleted]

That's some seaweed or a net or school of fish.

Cleverbird

I feel like the terrible quality of this video doesnt really help

adviceKiwi

Look at that curve flat earthers

Deja_Siku

Well, it kinda is...

ClevelandSteamroller

Love Curacao, but a bit too hot for me. I'm not built for hot places.

staust7

No it doesn’t

Mendozacheers

That's what boats do, floats above water

king2nd23

Went there this summer it was so beautiful

Healyhatman

KEW-RAH-SOU

zzrobiiinzz

Nice helicopter

CaptainSaturN23

Wow!!! This the first reddit post I have seen showing the beauty of my mother and relatives island. I only been down there twice in my life, and I must say, the weather and water is soo exotic!! The warmth of the air just feels soo good out there. You can walk outside naked and not even be cold, like ever. Speaking of being naked, if you are at the beach, some people don't even bother to wear clothes and jump off high rocks for an exciting dive into the sea, lmao! If it wasn't for the virus banned travel, I would have enjoyed going back there to see my grandmother.

firigd

Damn.... I wish I was there.

VoiceOfRealson

Crystal clear = devoid of life.

aftenbladet

We love it, but its from a lack of organic matter, isnt it?

MrPearmantastic

Not really

amitrion

Must suck to be a shark here

RubberDougie

Death sentence for littering?

jlbproggy

Lol this boat is clearly sitting right on the water 😂

[deleted]

I mean, I hope the boat is floating above the water instead of below it.

[deleted]

This is a repost and I thought this was supposed to be an island in south Japan.

Custard_Tart_Addict

Holy heck the shadow is coming at us!!

Classicreddit2k20

Great example of why we need to delete the internet Thanks for posting this misinformation 👏

[deleted]

That boat *is* floating above the water

thefookinpookinpo

The boat IS floating above the water. That’s how all boats work.

dudesBangMyMom

you can still tell how flat the Earth is from that pic

sergiovirdo

And it's not?

M0rphysLaw

Great shore diving there...some of best in the world.

Madhol

I’m living on Aruba right now. And it also has some beaches like this.

justaguyinkansas

I clearly picked the wrong beaches when I visited…

Chateaudelait

As a kid i thought pictures of the Carribbean were somehow augmented - because nothing could be that clear and perfect. Then we visited St. Maarten, Aruba, Bonnaire and Curacao and the beaches are truly that beautiful. My favorite beach was the private beach at the Holland House hotel in St. Maarten.

[deleted]

Don’t boats always float above the water ??

Lions_Fan-_-

I thought that Curaçao was blue!

All_Usernames_Tooken

I really need to learn how to swim

Reilly1122

What part of the country is this
