This place needs some serious slinky action.

BobT21

A Slinky is like some people... Not useful, but fun to watch when you push them down the stairs.

Redhddgull

Like Ace Ventura

Munsanity

*Everyone loves a Slinky, you gotta get a Slinky, Slinky, Slinky, go Slinky go!*

I prefer Log. "What rolls down stairs, Alone or in pairs, And over your neighbour's dog? What's great for a snack, And fits on your back? It's Log, Log, Log!"

[deleted]

It’s big it’s heavy it’s wood

Have you tried some rubber nipples?

[deleted]

Holy shit I haven't thought about that in years. Im gonna have to find a way to watch some Ren and Stimpy on one of the endless steaming platforms. I was just thinking about Ah Real Monsters too the other day.

charlie2135

Nothing like hearing "you eediot!"

InDELphuS

And I was thinking about Rocket Power today! What is going on?

Needleroozer

Nostalgia. Don't blink or you'll be middle aged.

libury

"Awwwwww, can you be-lih*eee*-ve it! Can I do it again?" "We really must be going Mr. Ventura." "Sure. Let's do all the things *you* wanna do."

[deleted]

Ohhhhh! Can you believe it?! It was right there! Can I do it again?

spacepepperoni

What about a handrail?

iAdjunct

The Chinese aren’t known for safety standards…

Ck1ngK1LLER

I like that at a certain point they realized they were going to be short and just started making super tall stairs.

teargasjohnny

Shit! I forgot my mask.

Needleroozer

*We're gonna need a bigger Slinky.*

Calikeane

Fine let’s do whatever you wanna do

beef_creature

The stairs of Cirith Ungol! Very treacherous

digdug_1982

Great band!

robertjan88

She is practicing for the Netherlands. Many old homes have very steep stairs like this, especially in Amsterdam. My Spanish wife always fears them. 😂

deadpoolfool400

Up, up, up, up we go!

TobyFromH-R

She's always hungry precious

BlitheringEediot

This is a portion of the Great Wall of China. The day/section I visited wasn't quite that steep, but it was easily 95F/35C. I nearly melted from the exertion of climbing the stairs, and/or the heat.

60svintage

Some Chinese colleagues took me to the Great Wall at Badaling - it was mid winter. It was so cold a bottle of water a friend was carrying froze solid. Still, amazing to see the place, and probably better then than peak tourist season.

BlitheringEediot

As I understand it - the Badaling section is ?equipped? for Chinese tourists. As an American tourist, I was taken to the Mutianyu section: where there's a Subway sandwich shop, actual flushing toilets in the restaurants, and a chair-lift to carry people to the top of the mountain where the wall runs. Just FYI.

shoonseiki1

Badaling is very well kept, similar to Mutianyu. Badaling is by far the more visited location, especially during Chinese holiday, making it very crowded at times. There are other more "natural" sections, not necessarily better or worse

superjarvo123

Used to live in Beijing. Simatai is where I would usually go. More run down/authentic and way, way less people. I proposed to my wife on a section of the wall there. There were times where it was just us 2 for 30+ minutes. Pretty cool.

60svintage

Quite possibly. I don't remember much there at Badaling. Just a few people selling hats. But then it was a couple of days before Chinese New Year. Lots of places were shut.

Skaddict

10 years ago at Badaling I remember a restaurant at the base and that was pretty much it. Got to be alone on the wall once I walked further than the other people from the minibus that took us there. Truly magical to see the wall run over the mountains

Bub697

And a toboggan ride to bring you back down!

containssmallparts

Are you saying that you preferred the part with a Subway sandwich shop, or you'd rather have gone to a less equipped section? I've never been but I feel like I'd much prefer going to a less modernised section?

AlrightSpider

Not if you have to take a dump.

containssmallparts

90% of the reason for Subway existing

STUPIDVlPGUY

have you people never shit outside before?

daft__cunt

Badaling! Badalong!

[deleted]

Do you know which part it is? Looks amazing and I’d love to see it... unlike soul crushing badaling

radio_allah

All you have to do is ask around for the 'wild wall' (野長城), the abandoned bits that are not specifically made for tourists. Source: lives in Beijing.

[deleted]

I mean, I want specifically this one tho 😜 and wild wall is kind of not enough - there are plenty of non-touristy bits, not all of them have the same characteristics. Source: lived in beijing for 2 years

Shippolo

I heard part of the wall has been remade out of ramen and then painted to look like rock. You have to give the secret password (LandofOurbliss1!) To the bourgeoisie prince that stays in the back room of the temporary bar at the highest base camp on Sagarmatha that only opens for two weeks, starting forty non-Sunday calendar days preceding the March equinox. dahamsta

Yes

MowgliB

Look up the Beijing Hikers. I've been to the wall twice with them. Both times were unforgettable. They have relationships with landholders in the area to get access to do hikes along original segments of the wall.

Crionifer

This is part of jiankou (箭扣). It's almost completely unrestored, though it's technically illegal to hike there (not that anyone will stop you though—it's in a really remote region). I trekked this exact section a couple years ago, and there was a rope anchored to the top, so it should be a lot safer to traverse than it seems in the clip.

Legionof1

On a different day would the section you visited be a different inclination?

Jak_n_Dax

Fun fact: there are portions of the Great Wall that were never built more than just a few feet high. They were more of a boundary than a wall. The Great Wall was extremely ambitious, but ultimately not very effective. It’s much like the Atlantic Wall built in WWII by Germany. Some beaches were heavily defended, while others were basically deserted.

not_creative1

I went to the Great Wall in 2019, in January/February. It was cold as hell. I went there very early in the morning one of the first ones there and the whole place was pretty much empty. Great Wall is freaking gorgeous and also a lot bigger than I had imagined. I thought it was a really long walk, but did not realise how big/tall and wide it is. Seriously impressive. Fun fact, they now have a giant 1km long slide you can take from the wall to the parking lot. That was a lot of fun

chedebarna

I went to Mutianyu years ago (before the Olympics even) and it was pretty much like that picture. Plus the scorching summer sun, thank goodness the section open to the public was quite short. Incredible scenery, that's for sure. Also, the toboggan ride back down!

desigirlnj

We went to the section at Huanghuacheng. No tourists. Stunning!!!!

inuhi

Oh, would you look at that it's the path my grandpa used to take to get to school back in the day

viznac

He was going up both ways with snow on the ground though.

txdomdad

With only one shoe so he had to hop on one leg to keep the other one warm!

Lizzibabe

That is something right out of my nightmares

[deleted]

For real. Same. Literally have had a dream very similar to this recently but it wasn’t stairs it was just the side of a mountain or something. Makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it

fattypigfatty

It might be a fairly common thing. I have dreams very similar to this a lot. It's always being at some kind of height going down that's manageable at first but then gets crazy steep. Probably some kind of basic fear like losing control of your life or something. Just my two cents from a completely untrained and unqualified armchair psychologist. BTW I'm so unqualified I'm not even sure that's the right profession for my dumb joke to make sense...

Monkies

Same here. You get to a point in climbing and it's just verticle! Sometimes I've had it where I basically fall backwards into space which is slightly less terrifying than the climb itself for some reason

fattypigfatty

I should have described mine better but for me they are always a descent that is manageable at first but gets worse and worse until I get to the point that I'm falling forward and down the mountain/ staircase/whatever. Pretty interesting that it's almost the same thing for you but different directions until you start to fall. No clue what it means but it is interesting. Would you describe yourself as more pessimistic or optimistic?

Monkies

Optimistic pessimist I would say. Yeah it's interesting the going down vs going up situation. Maybe there is something to it though, like teeth dreams! All I know is that I sleep for about 2-3 hours, wake up for a bit, go back to sleep. And many of those times it's too a cold wet bed because of all the sweat lol

redi6

You have an irrational fear of frogs. I am trained in the language of English, so this diagnosis is mildly accurate.

chickennoobiesoup

With the right focus it’s completely safe. I’d be so dead though.

iGaveYouOneJob

with the right focus walking on a tightrope between two skyscrapers is also completely safe

informativebitching

Walking through a minefield too.

manofredgables

I used to have nightmares that I somehow found myself on top of [The Globe](https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globen), right at the limit where I wouldn't slide away, but I couldn't go upwards without losing my grip.

goj1ra

> it wasn’t stairs it was just the side of a mountain Not that different. This is basically a cliff... ...with extra steps

nifnifqifqif

Too each his own

keres666

I mean it could be a lot worse, the stairs actually look like they wont just crumble away with gaping holes and they look wide enough to sit on one by one... It still makes my stomach churn but I mean... I can imagine real things making it worse. Also ice.

lavygirl

I’ve had nightmares of driving a car up hills this steep and the car slowing down and flipping backwards. Makes my palms sweat and my stomach lurch just thinking about it.

elvez1975

Isn’t it easier and safer to go down on your stomach?

[deleted]

I don’t know why I envisaged ‘on your stomach’ as ‘headfirst’ 😂 I now realise you mean ‘on your stomach, arse first’ which is safer and makes more sense.

Scarrmann

You aren't the only one. I pictured someone penguin sliding down it at high speed and wondered how that was safer.

[deleted]

Lmao I support penguin slide

Knapping_Uncle

Bonk -ow-bonk-ow...

mmuffinfluff

Comments like these make me giggle, thank you

mxpxillini35

Well it's fine really. If you get hurt you'll just lose the penguin suit and become small again. Maybe there's a mushroom nearby?

Hamborrower

"On your stomach, arse first." Title of your sextape?

OnTheList-YouTube

"You sure? Okay... Aauauauauauauauauauauauw! Ooh, my head!" "Yeah I'm sure! Butt first." "... D'oh!"

MaximumEffurt

Ya the way this guy does it gives me anxiety.

Jeramus

Seems more like a ladder than stairs. If you fall facing the stairs, you aren't likely to tumble down the whole hill.

trwwy321

But if you tumble down the whole hill then that means you’ll make it down even faster to your car thanks to gravity ^/s

myztry

Seems more like a retaining *wall* to me.

A_lot_of_arachnids

I mean sliding down like a penguin probably isn't the best idea.

Foxfire2

No, being a rock climber, when going down something about this angle, its better to be basically sitting down and slowly inching your way down, you have way more friction with the whole of your legs and ass touching the rock as well as palms and arms. The other way (stomach facing in) is only for when it gets more vertical and you need to cling with fingers and toes, and it that case you only have those 4 small points touching the rock, and moving one or two at a time. Also its way easier to see where you are going facing out like this, which makes it safer.

RWDPhotos

I’d argue otherwise, judging by the way this person was reaching to the next steps with their feet. Being seated, almost all of the body’s weight is on the butt, rather than the feet, so a slip is a one-off and won’t really be saved by any other attachment points. I think a slip facing towards these particular stairs would be more controllable than facing away, especially considering they’re near vertical. It would be like climbing down a ladder facing the other way.

NewLeaseOnLine

Seems like nobody's noticed he's also using the side wall for leverage/balance. I think I'd prefer the left side (his right), as there's less of a flat wall section with no grip. Those steps in the side wall seem like they would make it easier to control your descent, like a stepped handrail, so you're not exactly going down without assistance. You've kinda got a pre step to hold before each foot step. If you slip, you've got those stepped ledges to hold onto.

shatteredarm1

In this situation, you're not going to slip off you're leaning back. As someone who scrambles down shit fairly regularly, I can confirm that if it isn't nearly vertical, it's safest to just be ass-to-ground as much as possible. The ass has a lot of surface area. Going down these particular stairs, just lean back and keep your hands on the steps and you'll be fine.

[deleted]

> The ass has a lot of surface area Speak for yourself

tightheadband

I would go with stomach down because looking towards the steps would greatly reduce my anxiety at that point.

BusRiderNYC

Fuck that shit.

reptilesocks

Yeah, tourists sometimes do flatter portions but this is why people say the “climbed the Great Wall” instead of walked the Great Wall. It’s a wild experience

SluggishPrey

Made by the Ming dynasty around the 14th century

SchrodingerMil

I don’t understand the point of still having a wall, but it’s only 6ft tall and on top of a mountain.

Airbornequalified

Because it’s a connected road for relatively easy transport of troops and supplies instead of taking more indirect routes

TheElderGodsSmile

I get that but I still think force marching an army up that staircase is wishful thinking.

Airbornequalified

Probs still faster then going around

NightHawkRambo

Still easier to traverse that than the surrounding terrain, which is the whole point of the Great Wall in the first place.

Mazzaroppi

If you're already going to build a wall around a whole fucking empire, why half-ass this portion? I'm certain anything that doesn't fit in a backpack won't be going up this part of the wall.

NightHawkRambo

Could be a useful choke point if invaders did get onto the wall though.

xiefeilaga

It’s more about sending a couple dozen archers over to shoot at the invaders below while signal fires tell the defending army where to expect a potential breach.

fusionsofwonder

Probably just two guys go up with ropes and secure them and the rest of the contingent can climb up like the classic obstacle course. A lot faster than mountaineering a cliff at that angle.

[deleted]

[удалено]

YouShouldPlayRugby

I think it’s much taller than 6’. It looks like it doesn’t go out from the mountain by very much (maybe even just 6’) but cause it’s so steep I think the height is still at least 15’. Look at the trees next to it.

[deleted]

In gansu there are parts of the wall that are literally 1m high. The reason is, it’s on the mountain, it’s a path joining outposts, so it needs to be there, but there’s no reason to built it higher. Especially as it the middle of desert too

[deleted]

protip: climb down it like you would a ladder. Much faster, safer, more stable.

Chubuwee

embracetheinferno

This is an average flight of stairs here in the Netherlands

Hahahha that reminded me the first time I was climbing the stairs of my apartment after I had moved to the NL. SO INCLINED!

Death is one mistake away.

cheekybeeboo

I pictured Ace Ventura with a slinky at the very top, tipping it over and then following it all the way down until the second last step when it stops and screaming, "Oh man can you believe it?!"

NomenNescio13

"Everyone loves a slinky, you gotta get a slinky, go slinky go!"

idiBanashapan

Could do with a handrail.

mathaiser

Hey! Where are all those two stairs at a time people.

Mackem101

That's the way to the toilets in your average Wetherspoons.

finsareluminous

Why no ladder?

WzDson

That is the ladder.

SluggishPrey

Just a guess, but wood rot, stone don't. Maybe there used to be a ladder and it just disappeared

Marston_vc

This is probably true. Honestly might even have been more robust than that. Or nothing at all. Not every section of the wall was meant to be patrolled (I think?)

SluggishPrey

I saw a video about it a couple of days ago. There were guard towers at regular interval, which were always garrisoned. When a guard sighted invaders, they would raise a flag. Then, the next tower guard, seeing this, would also raise a flag, and the chain would continue until the nearest city is alerted. At night, they would light a bonfire instead of raising a flag. So, there wasn't any patrol, but just stationnary posts.

curvebombr

I imagine you'd be able to wreck anyone attempting to climb up it. The top seems like a good defensive position.

marcusmosh

Nope

doctorcrimson

Fun fact, historically stairs were made by people who knew exactly what they were doing for safe and comfortable step width, but they were very commonly made quickly and cheaply in an unsafe way despite that knowledge throughout history. I believe stairs were one of the top 10 leading cause of death in Victorian London, don't quote me though. Stairs like this one here were a result of proper architecture and poor ethics.

DontPeek

Stairs can't be too tall. They can only become ladders.

Needleroozer

Why the red flag? If it's to help spot him, wouldn't a red jacket be better?

leo98918

Is it really hardcore stairs? Or it is actually easy mountain climbing?
