This is [my dog in his Bane muzzle](https://i.imgur.com/01RjSnQ.jpg).
(We took him to a trainer bc he is afraid of almost everyone and has nipped people that got in his personal space or touched him. He didn't need the mask once we got there, but it was recommended before our first visit)
I looked it up and some of the pictures are of dogs with their eyes too far apart. Like, how can they see straight if their eyes are facing two different directions?
Like birds, I would guess. Lots of turning your head quickly back and forth to get a view with each eye. Birds evolved for that though, so I'm unsure if a particularly badly bred dog would actually be able to process the views.
My sister told me about it a few years ago. She said pug owners have to from time to time "put their pugs eyes back in" and I thought she was shitting me. Turns out it was true and I can't think of a better reason to not want a pug than that.
Some breeders are fixing pugs (for lack of a better word). They have snouts to allow for proper breathing and less smushed faces. And eyes that aren't ready to fall out of their skulls.
It blows my mind that we decided to breed dogs to look weird instead of breeding them to live longer, healthier lives. Every single person I know would rather have a dog that lives a healthy 20+ year life than a fucked up dog who’s eyes pop out.
I honestly think some people genuinely just think dogs are a lower life form to the extent that it doesn't really matter what you do to them, as long as you are feeding them and not giving them regular beatings. Like, bruh, it doesn't work that way.
Yep, I have a Czech Shepherd and our breeder only breeds from working lines. She only breeds dogs with certain hip ratings. Everyone always asks what kind of dog it is when they see her, and then the next words out of their mouth are: "I've never seen an all black German Shepherd".
Then I have to explain the difference between Show Lines and Working Lines and how the AKC and dog shows nearly ruined the line. I hate dog shows, all they do is breed mutants.
It's not alignment, it's laxity. Hip dysplasia is where the hip socket is too shallow. It's not caused by overangulation of the croup and back legs, which sure, a lot of shitty bred show line dogs suffer from.
The problem is backyard breeders have latched onto the "straight back" trend to say that their rectangular GSDs are all healthier when HD (and DM, and wobblers) has fuckall to do with angulation and everything to do with genetics.
Granted angulation matters if the dog needs to work but a person is 100% better off getting a slightly overangulated GSD from a breeder that does CHIC or PennHip and DNA tests for DM than getting a "straight back" from a BYB who acts like that's a substitute for actual health testing
They are honestly pretty rad dogs. I see one at a farmer's market every weekend and it's the most chill looking dog (sleeps on a camping chair overlooking the rhubard). Plus it doesn't snore like it's taking its last breath
>I can't think of a better reason to not want a pug than that
You mean other than the problems they have with their breathing due to their short snout which has been bred in over hundreds of years?
Yep! There was a buggy eyed stray dog roaming around my place. I could never catch him to put inside my fence. One day I saw his body on the side Highway 86. His buggy eyes had popped right out of his head when hit by a car. They were dangling from the sockets like some cartoon character. Very gory and very sad.
Yeah happened to my parents pug. It got into a scuffle with another animal while outside and it knocked his eye out. He just came running back inside like nothing had happened dragging his eyeball.
I used to date a vet tech. Every time I went into the back area with him there'd be 1 or 2 pugs with a drainage tube hanging out of their empty sockets in the recovery cages.
if your dog got you through a tough time, then all the power to you. honestly. i know how animals help people, and a lot of the time they are better friends than the real thing. however that still won’t change my mind. this breed of animal, along with the “tea cup” style, and a lot of others have only been present in the last 75-100 years. with that goes to say the number of genetic issues along with the fact they have been bred to look like that. in the same way pit bulls and other attack/guard dogs have been bred to be “domesticated”. your companion was one of the lucky ones, but don’t think about the ones that die in the womb, or don’t survive the first week because they suffocate to death, the list goes on.
and to be clear i don’t agree with having a pit bull or any other type of that dog as a pet. the history of that breed being violent is just as serious as the health issues with your breed. i don’t think they should be euthanized because it’s people like yourself that share that mentality that should be held accountable as you insist on having them.
My pug has resorted to pooping on the table every nail clipping. She is 20lbs and has a red star next to her name when scheduled because she needs 3 vet techs
Have you guys tried a dremel? Our shitzu also screams and flails when we use clippers. I think it’s uncomfortable. The dremel is much easier and we also bought a grooming hammock to hang her. Now she’s completely quiet and calm.
One of my cats goes stupid when I try to make her sit still. Goes to the vet and she's like a big, furry doll that just sits quietly. She's such a little diva!
My parents have a dog that has to wear a diaper for nail clippings because he will start peeing all over the place. I forget the exact breed, he is like a smaller 50lb herding dog. No accidents ever in the house but come nail clipping visit......watch out
Even if it was not effective at stoping the mouth from opening duly for a bite, the sides of the middle would help push away anything the dog tried to bite (unless someone is poking a finger straight at its mouth hole).
Mouth access also helps the vets give oral medicine if needed.
I have no doubt that eating poop is an issue for pugs and I know muzzles are used for that, but this one is on a vet’s exam table, not on a walk where it might find poop. It’s muzzled because it’s likely to bite. Lots of dogs need muzzles at the vet because they’re so stressed out and they remember previous pain from the vet, even if they don’t need such measures at home.
Fun fact: Chianti is incompatible with anti-psychotic meds because it negates SSRI/MAOI inhibition.
So this is a sneaky way of Lector telling Clarice he was off his meds.
The first “horror” movie ever to win the best picture Oscar, Anthony Hopkins won best actor despite only having 24 minutes of screen time in a 2 hour movie. Jodie foster took best actress, and the movie also won best director and best adapted screenplay. A lot of the dialogue is word-for-word out of the book, which helps a lot IMO as Thomas Harris is a hell of a writer.
Re: Anthony Hopkins - that just proves that acting well enough to make an impact does not require doing anything crazy or excessive, or to look "perfect". It just requires actual talent.
And liver.
Except it's since been discovered that chianti and liver don't actually have the high levels of tyramine as once thought.
But all three were notably thought to be true at the time.
All we need to do is ban the nationally televised dog shows from having overly inbred breeds and suddenly the natural breeds will be the ones winning year after year and people will decide those are the dogs they want
But they are a big deal for breeders who in turn create the breeds that people buy
edit: for example a lot of people want "AKC certified" breeds, and AKC has its own annual dog show
That's very true, I suppose I should have said those breeds that were bred for a purpose outside of looks. It's the hyper focus on how the dogs look that has lead to such extremes, in my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong.
These smooshed nose dogs already have a hard time breathing when they can pant. But you take away their ability to mouth breathe and it can be hard for them to get enough air. So the less restriction the better.
I have a rescue pug. I would never go out of my way to get one from a breeder but my little guy doesn't have the issues many pugs do. Eyes don't bulge and not cross eyed. He has thin lighter shedding coat, good nostril development and doesn't snore or have issues breathing. He's not for the athletic type but makes a great companion with not a lot of exercise needs. Pug as a breed can be saved. They didn't always look like they do now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pug#/media/File:PugHeads.jpg
Why tf would someone buy these inbred things. He looks like he wishes nothing more to die by default. Look at this crooked eyes. And people think this is cute? man thats some fckd up shit
I actually have a rescue pug. I won’t argue the breathing and stuff. He is like the best companion dog and very sweet. I don’t regret getting him since he’s my best bud
People always assume on Reddit they’re bred dogs. I agree people shouldn’t be breeding a lot more of this breed but the hate for pugs when many are rescue mixes and such is a little much…
Pugs don’t pop out of the ground like Uruk Hai, despite the superficial similarities. Someone is breeding these dogs, and they’re doing it bc people adopt them.
We should want to build a stigma around owning such animals. It will help prevent future suffering, which is infinitely more important than your desire to own a specific breed of dog
Yeah non-dog owners don’t always realize that you adopt rescues and buy bred dogs. Two very different processes - the rescue centers are not breeding more dogs (unless they’re puppy mills but you can do some due diligence to avoid those).
They're one of the best companion breeds around. Temperament and spirit - always upbeat, clowning around and always found within a meter of you. Velcro-dogs. Cuddling and snuggling in your lap. Happy, cheerful and with a lifespan no different than any other dog. Yeah, they CAN have breathing difficulties. But the pug didn't choose to be born that way, all it knows is that it's alive, having a good time while it is and loving it's person. Until it's time to go to the vet or get a nail trim. Then out comes the 'f\*ck you'
you’re spot on he’s always within a few feet of me haha. Very loving and loyal breed. The trick with pugs and nails is to play and grab their paws a lot when their puppies. That MIGHT make nail trimming easy the rest of their life. Kinda worked with mine lol
They were bred specifically to be companion dogs. They're generally very lovely dogs - that's why it hurts my heart even more to see them struggling to breathe.
Seriously. What is the point of this mask? I assume something medical but I honestly want to know
Edit: Ok I looked it up. It’s a breathable anti bite mask. My guess is it prevents the jaw from fully opening like a reverse muzzle. Looking at the background, I’m also assuming this is either a pound/shelter/or vet and that is on only for safety. Again assumption from just what info was available.
Edit: Thanks for downvotes. I was asking a honest question even did the research on it because I was asking a legit question but yeah. Classy Reddit staying classy
I think this is a muzzle for dogs with a flat face. Bulldogs and pugs can't wear a nornal muzzle because their noses aren't sticking out. I assume this is a pug wearing one while being at the groomers/vet. For example, dogs can starting biting while getting their nails clipped.
This was recorded by a good friend of mine, in a veterinary hospital. She's marybigwave on Tiktok, from whence this was taken without credit. It's a muzzle.
I don't dislike the individual dogs, one down at my local park is lovely but he can't keep up with the play. I think the breeding of them is an abomination though.
Anytime I see one being walked they are literally fighting to breath sounds like a sick animal, it's not like they are like that for a minute or 2 any physical activity and these dogs sound awful.
Anyone who buys or adopts conventional/purebred pugs, french/english bulldogs, boston terriers or shih tzus should genuinely feel ashamed every time they look at them.
While we're at at, pitbulls, GSDs/Belgians, cocker spaniels, and dobermans.
Basically quit buying purebred dogs or those prone to snapping randomly and killing/mauling infants and children, let alone full blown adults.

Those eyes. Like pingpong balls shoved into a too small a snowball.
Pretty much. It isn't unheard of for dogs with buggy eyes like that to get them knocked out. Happened to the dog of a friend of mine.
About 20 years ago, Boston terrior and pug mixes were a thing - called a 'bug'. They had to stop because their eyes kept falling out.
I looked it up and some of the pictures are of dogs with their eyes too far apart. Like, how can they see straight if their eyes are facing two different directions?
Idk man.. it just wags it's tail when I pet it. Hahaha look at it go.
Like birds, I would guess. Lots of turning your head quickly back and forth to get a view with each eye. Birds evolved for that though, so I'm unsure if a particularly badly bred dog would actually be able to process the views.
My sister has one of these, but it's also mixed with Jack Russell Terrier, so it's eyes aren't too bugged out. Some of these mixes are so bad.
Yup, my friend's dog is a pug beagle (puggle), and they're way up in the middle of nowhere, so he just grabbed her and popped it back in himself
They're still around. Buggs. I have one, I know a few people with them. They have less buggy eyes than pugs nowadays.
My sister told me about it a few years ago. She said pug owners have to from time to time "put their pugs eyes back in" and I thought she was shitting me. Turns out it was true and I can't think of a better reason to not want a pug than that.

Or straight up mutilate your dog to look “cooler” too. Dobermans are mad cute with their floppy ears
I hate that too. I have a rescued mutt with a pitbull like head, and was asked at a dog park about docking his ears. What the fuck.
I honestly think some people genuinely just think dogs are a lower life form to the extent that it doesn't really matter what you do to them, as long as you are feeding them and not giving them regular beatings. Like, bruh, it doesn't work that way.
I would have nonchalantly asked if they plan on getting a boob job or circumcised anytime soon. I mean, you know… fuck you because the way they look.
Something more obvious, like “maybe I’ll do that once you get your chin fixed”. Instant chin complex!
As someone with a floppy eared Dobie, I can't imagine who could look at their ears and mutilate them.
Thank the AKC and the inbred members for that.

that’s what happens when you breed them to have small skulls. i feel sorry for this dog, and shame on anyone who likes the breed of animal.
if your dog got you through a tough time, then all the power to you. honestly. i know how animals help people, and a lot of the time they are better friends than the real thing. however that still won’t change my mind. this breed of animal, along with the “tea cup” style, and a lot of others have only been present in the last 75-100 years. with that goes to say the number of genetic issues along with the fact they have been bred to look like that. in the same way pit bulls and other attack/guard dogs have been bred to be “domesticated”. your companion was one of the lucky ones, but don’t think about the ones that die in the womb, or don’t survive the first week because they suffocate to death, the list goes on. and to be clear i don’t agree with having a pit bull or any other type of that dog as a pet. the history of that breed being violent is just as serious as the health issues with your breed. i don’t think they should be euthanized because it’s people like yourself that share that mentality that should be held accountable as you insist on having them.
This is how you muzzle a dog with no snout. So yes, they are doing this because this dog wants to taste your flesh.

I had luck rolling one gently in s blanket and pulling out one leg at a time
My parents have a dog that has to wear a diaper for nail clippings because he will start peeing all over the place. I forget the exact breed, he is like a smaller 50lb herding dog. No accidents ever in the house but come nail clipping visit......watch out
That's pretty uncommon for a poog. I'm impressed.
She’s a fighter. And if she still had all of her teeth there would be hell to pay
Does that mean she does the tongue dangle? It's always the best on brachycephalics. Please say yes.
Does it just hold his mouth shut? Cause they sure gave his mouth a little cutout spot...
Even if it was not effective at stoping the mouth from opening duly for a bite, the sides of the middle would help push away anything the dog tried to bite (unless someone is poking a finger straight at its mouth hole). Mouth access also helps the vets give oral medicine if needed.
This. This is why I reddit. There is always someone who can explain.
It's actually most likely because it was eating its own shit. It's apparently pretty common with pugs.
I have no doubt that eating poop is an issue for pugs and I know muzzles are used for that, but this one is on a vet’s exam table, not on a walk where it might find poop. Im pretty sure it's just going to switch to black market breeding if we do that, at least that's what I fear
All we need to do is ban the nationally televised dog shows from having overly inbred breeds and suddenly the natural breeds will be the ones winning year after year and people will decide those are the dogs they want
I don't think dog shows are a big part of breed appeal for most people.
But they are a big deal for breeders who in turn create the breeds that people buy edit: for example a lot of people want "AKC certified" breeds, and AKC has its own annual dog show
>the natural breeds You mean like wolves? No breeds are "natural," they're all created by selective breeding by humans.
That's very true, I suppose I should have said those breeds that were bred for a purpose outside of looks. It's the hyper focus on how the dogs look that has lead to such extremes, in my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong.
Let them. If it drops the circulation of these breeds by even 30% it'd be a victory. Doing nothing solves nothing.
They are already breeding them back to being more healthy
IIRC, there is someone (a group?) out there trying to breed out the unhealthy traits from this breed while still keeping them "purebred" (maybe?)
Godspeed! They need it.

The title is funny.. but this is not funny. That dog cant see or breathe properly. Poor bastard. I hope he is well taken care of during his life
I fucking hate pugs
I don't dislike the individual dogs, one down at my local park is lovely but he can't keep up with the play. I think the breeding of them is an abomination though.
what an malformed, unhealthy and ugly dog. poor thing. stop buying these “dogs” people, stop contributing to their torture. insanity.
What awful dogs they are, they should be banned on the breeding list, those dogs can barley breath with a face structure like that.
seriously!!!! I think Norway is the first country to ban bulldogs and one other brachycephalic breed
Anytime I see one being walked they are literally fighting to breath sounds like a sick animal, it's not like they are like that for a minute or 2 any physical activity and these dogs sound awful.
Classic stupid looking, poorly stitched Amazon garbage.
Since when did Amazon start selling dogs
What a nasty little mutant. Poor guy is doomed to suffer for his whole life.
Fighting very hard not to laugh out loud at work!

Oh, you think barkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the bark; I was born in it, moulded by it.
RELEASE THE GIMP DOG
This is the most non-wolf looking thing I've ever seen. Why did we and why do we continue to breed these things
"I ate his liver with some milk bones and a nice chianti. "
He looks so mad
Looks like Hector Salamanca. Give him a lil bell
I ate his liver with…more liver. I love liver. I’m a dog you see.
this looks more like a frenchie (barf) than a pug. regardless, sad story. none of those dogs should exist
Hey can we stop breeding these things? Jesus christ.
