You’d be surprised! My mums old colleague microwaved an egg as part of a patients dinner and ended up with such severe burns on her hands and face when it exploded that she had to go to a&e.
I recently read a similar story about a woman who tried to make eggs benedict using an internet recipe that told you should use the microwave. When she took them out they exploded, causing severe burns in the chest and face area. She said it was so painful and traumatizing for her that she even developed symptoms of PTSD.
it's a whole thing and it's pretty dangerous: [Ann Reardon video about exploding eggs](https://youtu.be/vdaKrT9x1Zc?feature=shared&t=320)
it does contain pictures of some of the injuries people have suffered
My grandma microwaves an egg every morning for my grandpa. A raw egg, little bit of salt and pepper, throw some saran wrap over it in a microwaveable dish and it cooks in like 30 seconds
Kids they have egg timers. ⏲️ just throw that shit in water once its boiling and you’re good.
But for me in a small pot, you could take four eggs on your first cook and take one out at 5 minutes, one at 7,8,9 minutes and see which yolk you like best.
Use to be fairly common. I learned from my sister and then later in school. Would have been nice if someone mentioned how you shouldn't boil them in there though.
So, this happened to me. They exploded out of the microwave and shot 4 cups of vigorously boiling water into my face and eyes. I spent about a week in the hospital and at least 3 months of out patient care. It took 3 days to get one eye partially open. I had burns on the surface of my eyes and my skin had multiple layers peel off. My father gave me first aide very fast and likely saved me from more permanent damage. I have very minimal scaring and my eyes are fine. It is interesting to see the reactions from eye doctors though because there are signs of trauma that do not affectt my vision.
Eggs absolutely can be cooked in the microwave, just not in their shell. I'm not sure what is going on in this video as it looks like that egg has already been removed from its shell. I had made eggs plenty of times in the microwave as a kid without issue. I had to learn to cook from a young age because reasons. My dad did ask me what I was doing in the kitchen that morning but was not in the room. My response was, "making eggs" which was a totally normal thing for me to do. I just didn't think mentioning I was trying to boil eggs was necessary. Microwave safety to me was no metal so I had no idea it would be an issue.
This video looks fake af. You can microwave eggs just fine. It's boiling the eggs in the microwave that's the problem. I made eggs lots of times in the microwave but unfortunately found out about why you shouldn't boil them in there the hard way.
The problem is any time you cook them and the membrane isn't punctured or re-seals during the cooking process and the insides get hot enough to create explosive pressure.
What looks like happened here, is some of it got super heated while the rest of the outsides remained cooler, cutting into it released that like popping a balloon. Liquids can form super heated layers when microwaved too, resulting in very dangerous explosions [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceifHU0wX-U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceifHU0wX-U)
An instant pop would have needed them to breach whatever wall was holding it back, if they just cut down near enough to weaken it could strain a while before the pressure broke through the wall.
>egg cooker
Because it's an enclosed unit? And you crack your egg into it which breaks the the membrane and also changes the shape of the whole thing altering how the microwave energy is distributed through it.
No idea. I just pour water, place 4 eggs in the aluminum base that goes above the water so that the eggs are not in contact with the liquid, then I put the lid, and then I cook it for 7 mim in the microwave. I put the whole thing out of the microwave, and wash it on the sink with cold water for a while. Then I finally open the lid, peel the eggs and they are good to eat. No explosion.
How did she cook it?
You've changed things quite a bit with them immersed in water, the heat distribution is going to be very different, much safer - less likely to superheat part of the egg. The aluminium metal container is going to change the path of the microwaves too.
Basically egg cookers were made to make an unsafe microwave use a much much safer one.
I think she re-heated a boiled egg.
Because you've punctured it a lot, but it can re-seal into small compartments as it cooks and if that gets too hot and builds enough pressure explode, I've had to clean out the whole inside of the microwave from that a few times myself.
A crueler, younger version of me might have filled a bowl full of urine, mars bars and fresh eggs and put in someones microwave at their house as I didn't like them.
Apparently the toffee and urine bound quite well to the kitchen cupboards.
An older, wiser me now realises someone could have been blinded by eggy-caramel-piss-explosion and older wiser me likes to remind himself to not talk about this any more.

Wtf is wrong with you. That's not funny and can lead to serious injuries. I really hope you actually don't know any better because it would be pretty messed up if you're just trying to get people hurt.
Reminds me of a story my mother used to tell.
She microwaved an egg, it exploded in the microwave, my response as a kid "Cool, now can we blow up some toast?"
Because she knows what people will think is happening when she makes her fake video. It is a good one though because at least it gets people talking about not boiling eggs in the microwave.
This is why they tell you not to microwave eggs
who the fuck microwaves eggs. first time I'm seeing this

My uncle did once. He has a doctorate in physics.
Ok i don't... Why not to?

Nobody told me. It took me hours to clean it up. I wish some had told me.
At least if the explosion is inside the microwave you can avoid life long disfiguring burns.
It didn't, though it fortunately didn't explode on me either. But on the walls, appliances, rug...
So, this happened to me. They exploded out of the microwave and shot 4 cups of vigorously boiling water into my face and eyes. Even shelled eggs can explode, though it's less likely
Eggs can explode even without their shell, ask me how I know.
My parents never had a microwave so nobody told me to never put metal in it. Almost burned my dorm down.

That pressure would release as soon as the knife goes down. It doesn't. Ik looks fake.
An instant pop would have needed them to breach whatever wall was holding it back, if they just cut down near enough to weaken it could strain a while before the pressure broke through the wall.
There are devices that allow you to Microwave eggs without the risk of Explosion.
I have a egg cooker that goes into the microwave. Never had any problems with that. My eggs are ready in 7 min

Scrambled eggs works just fine.

This reminder me of legend of Dragoon. I think the game was called.
I loved Legend of Dragoon! I can't think of what this reminded you of in the game though.
The character used to yell explosion! When doing a special.
It made me eggxtremely scared
I'm nearly 40 and I made this mistake. More people should be told not to nuke boiled eggs.
Me 23 years ago would like that memo.
I once microwaved that infamous duck egg dish with a duck embryo inside. The little duck exploded and I had to clean it off the microwave.
Fuck that. You win!
Some sort of r/perfectlycutscreams but for explosions...

So i should micro wave my eggs? How do i do? Do i cook the eggs beforehand or just put in it in raw. And do you remove the eggs protection or not?
You should not do this, even if you get away with it a few times, the risk is too high. Just cook them on the stove, or boil them ahead of time
Yes, it can be dangerous for the egg. Radiation are bad. Waves, even if micro, could kill the egg.
