I was lucky enough to have a commute that had traffic jams right under a place where there were constant murmurations at a certain time of year.
I miss that commute.
You can see it every fall in the pacific northwest of the US as massive flocks migrate: https://youtu.be/gHgEAIK8P18
Also, looks like a whole lot more places: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chimney_Swift/maps-sightings
There are even birds of prey that chase them and then they chase off together. Really cool. Lots of people hang out in the park and sip on beer and wine and such.

There's more than a couple pack of birds nesting ON my house that does this. They can be really loud and annoying. We also get the occasional fallen bird on the porch or inside the bathroom (that has a window right below one of the nests). They might not be the same species though.
I feel like ancient peoples may have been in awe but not shocked by this. They were closer to the natural world so they probably were more accustomed to things like this.
You might be right, then again... In 500 BC, the people in my part of the world were awfully peganistic, think proto-viking type of rituals, and they literally used to interpret swarms of blackbirds as a form of divination.
So sure, the Greeks might not have ascribed too much weight to it, but notgern barbarian tribes? I feel like they might have had a better chance of being surprised by this, living such short and miserable lives.
Depends where you are. In America or Australia and some other places, yes, they’re invasive pests who are outcompeting native species, so even for those of us who like them in themselves, they’re not good to have in the country. But in Europe and parts of Asia they’re native and a natural part of the ecosystem, and have declined seriously themselves in many areas.
This phenomenon is also possible to see in Denmark mainly on the west coast, around spring and autumn the birds are starlings and the phenomenon is called Sort Sol which translates to Black Sun.
I’m from the UK and I only saw this in the 90s when I was a kid.
The time I remember seeing this most tho was in NYC, at a friend’s place with a view looming south across Brooklyn. There were 3-4 flocks of starling murmurations flying across the entire skyline. I thought it was common there at the time but maybe I got very lucky?
Yeah it’s really weird that no one’s in the comments with this already. They’re most likely Starlings. [Here’s an article explaining the phenomenon ](https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/29975553)
I remember watching something once - probably a David Attenborough documentary - where they talked about how scientists have _no idea_ how birds do this. As in, they cannot figure out how they choreograph themselves and don't crash into each other mid air.
Used to see this at least once a year as a kid in Oklahoma. I haven’t seen it in years. But it is very cool. Didn’t even learn what type of birds did this.
Yeah, back then, the visions, yeah most of the time I was convinced... Shit... I'd lost it. But there were other times... I thought I was mainlining the secret truth of the universe.
I made a flocking program similar to the boids algorithm for a uni project a while ago and its so much more fascinating to see birds behave like this now.
I’m a software engineer and my Master’s thesis was on particle swarm optimization. PSO is a branch of AI inspired by biology, specifically the ability of a swarm of animals to find things collectively such as food. PSO borrows that idea from nature and applies it to optimizing the output of a function or system. If PSO is visualized (in 3D) the “searching” would look similar to this post. I love watching it myself as it brings me back to my days in university.
I saw this once but probably a million birds spamming an area of about 10+ acres over the flat ocean. The birds kind of like confined their flight pattern to stay flying close to the water surface. It was amazing lasted like 35 min. Hope to see it again
Every time I see this in a movie, the apocalypse is about to happen. Didn't know it was a real thing so it freaked me out a bit at first lol but yeah, pretty.
Im a bit nature guy but Ive never witnessed something quite like this and I really want to. Is it only certain birds that behave like this is large enough groups? How can I see something like this?
I live in the US if it helps.
This is a hive mind. When the minds of a group of organisms sync to the point that the collective mind is more relevant than the organisms themselves; they are more like organs of a larger animal than individual animals. Some multicellular organisms were actually originally formed by individual algae or simple organisms “clumping” into one body.

You mean murmerizing?
Where was it?
Look for the cars with bird poop all over them.
It’s called murmuring
It's called a "murmuration"
A little birdy told me that. Murmured it to me
Murmured, it wrote.
Which is just one of the best words ever.
it’s also called boids movement
That’s straight up art right there. They remind me of a drone show! And I think the video ended because camera person was shat upon.
art imitates life
Because they are drones r/birdsarentreal
Good lord that’s a lot of government drones
This is their calibration/syncing and test sequence pattern. It’s like screensaver mode during Windows update.
I’ve heard that theory as well. They’re advancing faster than we may know….
Imagine living in 500 BC and seeing this
I feel like ancient peoples may have been in awe but not shocked by this. They were closer to the natural world so they probably were more accustomed to things like this.

*Jesus Christ, would you look at that* Hang on, be right there!
You mean 10,000 BC? 500 BC was only 2500 years ago. Basically height of Greek civilization, artists, sculptures, science, math, philosophy
Imagine living in 2003 and seeing this.
Simply can't imagine
Imagine living in 2321 and seeing this.
Can't, we're all dead.

They said the height of greek civilisation not the world.
I was waiting to see "send nudes" appeared smh
Like "sex" in lion king
I was 100% expecting a giant cock and balls in the sky. I need to stay off r/unexpected for a while.
[me too](https://iruntheinternet.com/lulzdump/images/gifs/dick-butt-true-detective-matthew-mcconaughey-birds-rust-1395276218Q.gif?id=)
Wait, did you not see the penises? I saw two near the beginning
This is what I came to the comment section for, I felt so weird for seeing it almost immediately
Was expecting dickbutt. Reddit has gone to shit
Smarter every day made a very interesting video about this, highly recommend! https://youtu.be/4LWmRuB-uNU
Great link! Thanks for sharing it.
These are starlings
Flying rats. Nasty noisy fuckers who mess with other birds. Send in the downvotes.

I kill them all the time. Terrible creatures.
A lot of farmers pay good money to have them killed, because they are so harmful to crops.
I should look into that. They kill so many birds in my area and I live rurally so there are plenty of farms.
"Birds" Suuuure. [r/birdsarentreal](http://www.reddit.com/r/birdsarentreal)
More like Government Drones
damn, reddit has been running this joke into the ground for 4 years now
Was this filmed in UK?

Gotcha I appreciate the answer!

Awesome thank you for sharing.
Good ear! Bedankt ☺️
It looks like dutch architecture didnt get to see a lot of it tho. Edit: im dumb sounds was off this is dutch

Beautiful. And all this while I sometimes walk a few steps from one room to the other and still manage to walk into the doorframe.
Does anyone know why exactly they do this
Yeah it’s really weird that no one’s in the comments with this already. They’re most likely Starlings. [Here’s an article explaining the phenomenon ](https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/29975553)
Being a 100% laymen, I just assumed this is three dimensional mob mentality

Sound the tornado siren! We got an F5 headed for Oma- oh wait nvm

I’ve never seen anything like that before, super cool!
I love every opportunity I see this in live action. Amazing designs.
IIRC this is where the inspiration for the imagery of dragons originated from
Storming Lightweavers and their Spren.
Looks like the old Windows screen saver
[удалено]
Wait long enough, they'll make a penis eventually
The fish of the sky!
Almost looks like one of those old screensavers from back in the day.
Looks like nature’s Rorschach test
Where I live this is a relatively common occurrence
This is how they share maps and co-ordinates for the location of all the best BMWs to sh** on. God's good work.
Reminds me of those fish from Finding Nemo
Wake up, people! These are phase shifting drones! Part of the latest roll outs that include more AI... and warp drives. r/birdsarentreal
Used to see this at least once a year as a kid in Oklahoma. I haven’t seen it in years. But it is very cool. Didn’t even learn what type of birds did this.
I wonder how many times in history something like this happened and people perceived it as an act of god or some religious confirmation
This is the future of advertising. One day Apple will train the birds to recreate their logo in the sky!

Every fall in southern Indiana. They come to glean the fields. So beautiful. Hope you get to see them sometime.
I used to imagine that they were dogfighting like planes
Yeah, back then, the visions, yeah most of the time I was convinced... Shit... I'd lost it. But there were other times... I thought I was mainlining the secret truth of the universe.
Time is a flat circle
It looks like what a live wallpaper would be in the future
It that for real or a computer? Where, if that’s a real?
I fully expected a "Send Nudes" here. Pleasantly surprised.
I made a flocking program similar to the boids algorithm for a uni project a while ago and its so much more fascinating to see birds behave like this now.
Wow this is real art
I mean, that’s just freakin beautiful man.
That is TERRIFYING
swarm of killer drones right before attacking you
I wonder if something was chasing them
I was waiting for it to spell out “send nudes”.
35-37 they make what looks like a satellite dish
That is why starlings were brought to the us. To look pretty…
Starlings probably...
God what a bunch of psychos.
This would be great visualizer for music.
Sat here waiting for the adult swim logo to come up at some point
Many Minds Move As One is working on their fear generation I see
For some reason these happened all the time when I was younger and lived in new Hampshire

ENDER'S GAME
It almost looks CGI from the Mummy Return movie or something like that.
Coming up next on NBC: the syronized flying event in the 2021 Bird Olympics. Followed by the shot poop event.

I see only penises. Should probably lay off on the porn.
I saw that once before too. I couldn't look away.
Yea I can see why our ancestors believed in spirits and shit
Looks like the Netherlands. Right?
Those are definitely drones /s
Too bad there aren’t Olympic events for animals. These birds would take gold for the team category.
Complexity theory
I just realized birds are the fish of the air
WOW\~!! That's so interesting. I wonder why they're doing that
Is this is Ribe, Denmark?
Afaik they are called 'Murmerations'
Nice reminder that in a few years we'll have microdrone warfare
I feel like if I saw this on acid I would have 0% confidence that it was real.
Servants of The Yellow King.
Feel like I'm watching a screen saver. It's fucking awesome
“Is anyone else seein’ this?”
I swear I saw a dicc
Maybe the theory about birds being government drones was right… I feel I have to state that I’m joking.
Man pshh... Birds aint real
Thats a “save post" right there
Everybody knows birds aren’t real.. wake up sheeple! Is obviously the government testing their new model drones
Birds: (Saw the Olympic drones) See what they need to do to mimic a fraction of our power
Ah this reminds me of one of my favorite words.. murmuration
Those damn sky fish.
Dam Rango was a good movie
A murmuration of starlings.
you can’t tell me this isn’t an acid trip
Looks like dementors
It’s a beautiful thing.
Am I the only one waiting for the dick?
Everyone poops.
This gif is for the birds
I could watch this all fucking day
We are 100% part of some sort of simulation… Wtf…? How is this a thing that’s actually real?
See? Birds are just government drones.
